Outstanding

This book is a treasure. Terkel tells the story of a Chicago that seems to be passing. The passing of Terkel's Chicago is not entirely a good thing--the mural artists people have forgotten, the Greek delis that have given way to Starbucks and the working stiffs that can't afford to live in the city anymore. The shared triumph of Joe Louis and the political rallies.
People from Chicago should read this book and look at it from time to time to remind themselves about what makes Chicago the city that it is.

A Paen to the City of Big Shoulders

Even though this reader lived in Chicago for just two (bless 'em) years, the city still has a magnetic hold on him.
There is Marshall Fields and Soldier Field. Kup's Column and the Cubbies. Big Stan and Big John cut off at mid-section by low-hanging clouds. Mayor Washington scrapping it up with Fast Eddie Vrdoliak in city council. Lake effect snow. And those friendly, unreserved, Midwestern people speaking with a peculiar, broad accent to us transplanted, you talkin' to me-type Northeasterners.
That's why "Chicago" is pure magic. All of the people, history, politics, and architecture are skillfully rolled into this slim and lively volume. Terkel catches Chicago's character and bottles it like no other chronicler could.
"Chicago" is also a freeze-frame, capturing a city whose edgy charm and sometimes gritty urban qualities are fading with the dawn of a new century. In this sense, the book is elegiac.
Ronald Reagan, speaking in a public service message for the Chamber of Commerce years ago, said it was unfortunate that he had only a minute to talk about why he liked Chicago. So it is with this review. But you'll have more than a minute with your memories when you open this book.

A classic full of sympathy with the losers of the first Indu

E.P. Thompson's magnum opus is a real classic. No serious student of social history should omit reading it! As a history student, I had read it more than 25 years ago. When I reread large parts of it, recently, I noticed - with the life experience acquired since that time - that the book is an even finer gem than I remembered.
It is clear that the author shows a certain bias in favour of the "losers" of the first Industrial Revolution: the English artisans in the textile trade, who in the late 18th and early 19th century were being reduced to the position of factory workers condemned to work under appalling conditions. But this bias does not substract anything from the worth of this study. On the contrary, such bias, or rather such sympathy towards the groups the author focuses on, is probably necessary to motivate a historian in examining his subject in such detail and writing such a full report about the activities of Jacobites, Luddites, Owenites, Chartists and all the other groups who did not accept the oppressing social and economic order of their time. Of course, such sympathy (or bias) should be kept in check by professional rigour, which is certainly the case in profesor Thompson's magnificent study.
The author persuasively argues that, during the generation between 1815 and 1848, England had come much closer to a Revolution of the kind France had gone through between 1789 and 1794, than the "Whig Interpretation of History" would make us believe.
Some of Thompson's assertions are not beyond dispute. He claims, for instance, that the position of the English poor had definitely deteriorated compared to the 18th century. It has been convincingly shown that their position was already dismal long before the Industrial Revolution started. The historians' dispute over this question is still far from being concluded.
Thompson also puts forward the question how so many Englishmen of that time could have been so callously insensitive towards the suffering of the poor. He blaims it for a good part on Methodism, the creed that tended "to make man his own slave driver". He approvingly cites a late 19th century historian: "A more appalling system of religious terrorism, one more fitted to unhinge a tottering intellect and to darken and embitter a sensitive nature, has seldom existed."'

A Classic in the Field of Social and Labor History

Well, it took me darn near a month to finish this monster (800+ pages) of a book. Can't say I regret the experience, though. Truly , this is a masterpiece, both in terms of its substance and its approach. I could quite easily write more then a thousand words on this book, but hey, this is Amazon, right?
Before I begin, I would like to state up front that I am not a historian or a graduate student of history. Please forgive me if my review contains incorrect statements.
"The Making of the English Working Class" is precisely what its (awkward) title describes: a history of the developments leading to the emergence of the modern industrial working class in England (and Scotland, sort of. Wales and Ireland are excluded, although Irish immigrants living in England to figure in some parts of the book). The time period covered is roughly the 1790's to the 1840's. Thompson starts with a description of "Dissent", discusses the influence of the French Revolution on that tradition (Dissent), spends a good chunk of the book describing the effect of the industrial revolution on the lives and lifestyles of the workers in industrial England, and then spends an equal amount of time describing the reaction of the workers and their leaders to this adjustment in circumstances.
Along the way, Thompson takes a hatchet to historians on the left, right, and center. His section on the change in circumstances of the workers in England is most critical of writers like F.A. Hayek, i.e. those writers who try to say that the industrial revolution "wasn't that bad" or "wasn't bad at all" for the workers. He devotes a good part of Part II of the book to attacking the methods of statistical or economic history. His preference is to use documentary evidence of the time. In this way, the book (published in the 60's) is a forerunner of historical "postmodernism"(Oh, please forgive me for the term), where authors abandon "objective" evidence (economic statistics) in favor of "subjective" evidence (pamphlets, letters and newspapers).
I guess that's hardly a revolutinary arguement now-a-day, but back then, I can hardly imagine.
His section on the reaction of workers to the industrial revolution is rather more critical to historians of the left and center, who sought to discount the violence associated with the Luddite movement as somehow unrepresentative of the working class movement in England. Thompson's revisionist history of the Luddite movement is a tour de force. Really, it's breathtaking.
In my opinion, the book kind of loses steam after that section. Thompson has some harsh words for the London based "leaders" of the workers movement, and I felt his discussion of Owenism left too much to the readers imagination. I don't suppose this book was meant for someone with only a loose grounding in English history, but none the less, that's what I have, so I'm just stuck.
To the extent that I have anything critical to say about this book, it's that Thompson at times presupposes a graduate level education in English history. I haven't read AJP Taylor or Hayek or any of the other authors Thompson attacks. IN the end, though, I felt like it didn't hurt my enjoyment of this book. I would highly recommend it, although you should set aside a good chunk of time to make your way from beginning to end.

Thompson's book is THE ground-breaking work of social history for our century, pioneering in the "history of everyday life" (also taken up by Foucault, de Certeau, Davis, etc.); the history of working people; and the consideration of culture in the past. Unlike most other social history it is also brilliantly written and accessible. Buy it.

Very entertaining.

Let me first start off by saying that this book was my first exposure to the writings of the late Lewis Grizzard. And if more of his work is of the same quality I can definitely say I'll be a fan. Don't Bend Over in the Garden, Granny offers a raunchy but humorous view on sex and, well, relationships between men and women in general. I say raunchy, but Grizzard manages to get his point across without feeling the need to constantly resort to crude sexual jokes and slang terms for our anatomy. There is a bit of that of course, but he keeps it to a bare minimum, choosing instead to replace all the miriad slang terms with simply "business" when talking about both male and female anatomy. He talks about his several failed marriages and other not-so-successful relationships and here and there makes jokes about the biology teacher who, when discussing reproduction, used terms like "furtilizes" or "mates with" and was subsequently caught "furtilizing" one of the substitute teachers.
In short I believe this is a book that one can safely read without being overloaded by explicit sex scenes and jokes. Grizzard talks about the awkwardness of sexual urges and how men in particular tend to get them and their primary physical manifestation at the most inopportune times, which is, I'm sure, a phenomenon with which every man has got to be all too familiar. I read a review where someone commented on how the book hs no plot. All I have to say is get over it. Grizzard wasn't going for a plot here I'm quite sure. But if you can get past that then I wholeheartedly recommend giving this book a read. It's by no means pure but it's at least clean enough for most people to be able to read without blushing or becoming offended at every sentence.

Did someone really complain that this book has no plot?

Complaining that Lewis Grizzard's writing lacks a plot is like complaining that Beethoven or Merle Haggard's music isn't good to dance to. Lewis Grizzard was a columnist and he didn't write "stories" with "plots". He wrote essays full of perceptive and funny insight into what makes people tick, or at least amusement that he didn't understand certain things, such as Dr. Ruth's status as a sex expert. (Now, be honest.... how many saw Dr. Ruth for the first time and thought "SHE's a sex expert"?)
I don't know about the rest of the world, but Georgia misses Lewis Grizzard.

Life-changing Book

I read this book in 1996, when I was looking for direction in my life after 15 years of marriage facing a divorce and no future. The book really helped me to make healthier choices in how I rewarded myself putting a real value on lasting choices rather than focusing on more immediate outward fixes like material things, relationships, physical beauty, etc. Ultimately, her message was creating and improving self-esteem, not finding the perfect mate, job, home, etc. So I set out adjusting what I valued and realized that was the foundation to the rest of my happiness, a foundation I was lacking. When I chose this book I thought I would get direction, but instead I got insight, insight to permanent happiness, not one that can be taken away by circumstances like divorce, aging, job loss, etc. I set long term goals like getting my degree and starting a career as a counselor and today I use this basic information to guide others. I highly recommend this book for those that feel like they are missing something in their lives and look to others for their value and happiness.

The self-esteem pick me up off the floor book

5 stars because I read the entire book with underlining, highlights and annotations from beginning to end, and her fresh insights just kept coming. I love the allegory of Hansel and Gretel that she side-barred throughout, providing excellent archetypal examples. This book was written in 1990 but I found every page entirely relevant to today more than 20 years later, thats because it is about the core self. It is about the core where self-esteem is born, and goes through all the stages of living. Even when self-esteem has been crippled early on in one's life, Marsha Sinetar is able to prove her case that all is not lost. Self-esteem can be repaired, enhanced, resurrected, and revitalized at any cognizant age. This book is not about looking at the cause of our low self-esteem but rather at the effect. It is not deep psycho-analysis. It is rather a pragmatic approach to going forward with new eyes in our continuing journey through life. It is about falling in love with the future instead of grieving over the past. A stellar work and highly recommended.

Superstition

This book borders on superstition, with its frequent references to "magic" and "miracles." It is so full of jargon that it is difficult to learn any lessons from it. The book contains no research on happiness, and it even goes so far as to recommend the pseudo-science of psychoanalysis.

You may have seen the movie with Morgan Freeman, but I urge you to read the book because it was much better than the movie. It's a coming-of-age story of a young boy in South Africa. He has such a hard time of things! He's picked on as a young boy, then he befriends an older man who teaches him the wonders of life. The book is beautifully written, and the story is extremely compelling. If you liked Anna Quindlen's OBJECT LESSONS or Edward Albee's A DEATH IN THE FAMILY or John Irving's A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY, you will love this book too.

An absolutely amazing and riveting novel

The Power of One is without a doubt, one of most compelling novels I've ever read, and what prompted me into researching a bit into the history of the African (and European) people under Apartheid living in South Africa. The book, although from a British perspective, seems very unbiased, unlike what you might be thinking. The Power of One begins with the main character (who names himself Peekay) heading off to boarding school, away from his beloved nanny, and into the arms of Boers (Dutch, also called Afrikaners), who not only despise him for being British but despise him as a human being. Throughout boarding school, Peekay is ridiculed but promises himself that he'll never cry again. Although Peekay looses a friend (Grandpa Chook- a chicken of all things), he comes to realize the horrible riff that lies between the Dutch and the British. After leaving boarding school, Peekay encounters a man who teaches him about some of the essentials of what he believed was the power of one, and from this man (a Boer) he discovers his love of boxing, which became his obsession, becoming Welterweight Champion of the World became his goal and his life. This is just the idea behind the power of one, and the introduction of the story. From there, the book tells about the many people Peekay encounters throughout his life and the influence they had upon him and what he believed was the power of one. But what struck me was really how beautifully written the novel is and the way it combines wit, humor, drama, and the everyday troubles of life, and still manages to get its message across and entertain the reader. Just an absolutely incredible novel that sets across a striking vision of South Africa before and during the terror that was Apartheid.

Skip the movie, Read the Book FIRST

Annotation: An inspiration story of a young man named Peekay who struggles in South Africa during World War II to find that it only takes one to change the world. Peekay overcomes obstacles by using his courage to show the power of one.
Author Bio: Bryce Courtenay was born in 1933 in South Africa. He arrived in Australia in 1958 and a year later became an Australian Citizen. He is married to Benita. He also has three sons with her. Courtenay began an advertising career at age twenty six and within five years, he had become Australia's youngest creative director. He retired full time in 1993 to become a writer. Power of One was his first novel and became an international bestseller. The book is translated into eleven different labguages. The book has sold over two million copies. Courtenay also wrote a book, April Fool's Day, in which it was wrote about his youngest son who died in 1991 from AIDS.
Evaluation: I was fist introduced to Courtenay's book when I saw his movie in the seventh grade. Four years later, I decided to read the story behind the movie in this novel. There is no comparison. The movie is a amended summarization of the book and although it is very inspirational, it is not as life changing as the book. I was enthralled in the hardships of Peekay's life as a growing boy in South Africa. He faces many obstacles in racial discriminations with the Afrikaaners since he was English. It is astonishing to see how this boy not only survived his childhood; he also made a tremendous impact on South African society by using the power of one. Peekay meets many people along his journey that only flavors the soup pot. This book was a life changing event for me. Not only did I feel like crying and helping Peekay with his mission, I felt like I have to make an impact on society today. This book receives my highest rating and I can not wait to begin reading it again.

Bryce Courtenay makes THE POWER OF ONE seems so authentic that the reader is carried right into the story.
The book begins when a five-year-old boy is being sent off to boarding school. He's small for his age, white and of English descent. His name is Peekay and he lives in South Africa. Up to this point in his life he's known only his family and his beloved black Nanny. Now, he's forced to take care of himself and survive under the most brutal of circumstances. The time is World War II and Peekay spends years in a boarding school where he's the only English student among Afrikaners who are sympathetic to the Nazi cause. He's beaten, tortured and treated as a "prisoner of war" by the older boys. The Afrikaners are the descendents of the Dutch and there has been a great deal of conflict between them and the English settlers who came to South Africa at a later period of time.
When I first started reading this novel, I wasn't sure if I could handle the passages about the brutal treatment of the little boy. However, I quickly learned that Peekay is a spirited survivor and would make it through that horrible period of his life. On his vacations from school, he meets several people, both black and white who really influence him and teach him to work hard in order to fulfill his dreams. I found an uplifting joy in every success that Peekay experienced.
This is a big book, but I looked forward to my reading sessions every day and I'm sure that part of this story will remain in my mind forever. The character of Peekay is very inspiring.
Next, I plan to read the sequel, TANDIA.

Intriguing 'second act' autobiography with the comedienne at full steam...

Picking up right where her previous book "Enter Talking" left off, pioneering female comic Joan Rivers is matched up with producer Edgar Rosenberg via her "Tonight Show" connections, and soon found herself married. The book not only examines the show-biz ramifications of this loving marriage/business partnership in the entertainment world, it also shows how two 'outcasts' (by Joan's definition) came to cling to one another--and blame eachother when plans and dreams fell through. Some of the minute details (such as how many times Rivers guested on Johnny Carson's show) are sketchy, but Rivers' anger over being wronged so many times by people she trusted is instantly identifable. It's also a show-biz tome of wonderful gossipy bits: Tony Bennett constantly turning up late for a Vegas gig; Shirley MacLaine throwing her weight around (well, she is a Taurus!); Elvis Costello nodding off on camera; Cher being a good pal, always there when needed. Often, Rivers drops name for no other purpose than to fill certain gaps (she keeps mentioning Bill Cosby, Ann-Margret and Woody Allen without explaining these relationships to us--were they personal, friendly, or professional only?). The book's prologue and middle section details Edgar's suicide and Rivers' numbing heartache, yet Joan is careful not to overload her prose with repetitious grief--she's remarkably poised with her pen, sharp and brittle but also a woman in need. In fact, she's far more womanly and human here than her stand-up act ever let on, and many of her stories (triumphs and tragedies) are gripping, emotional, moving, bitterly funny and vividly told. An impressive and educational book

When I opened this book two days ago, I did not expect what I found. This is an impressive and engaging memoir about Joan Rivers' life and career. It centers around her husband's (Edgar Rosenberg) suicide and how that experience shattered her and her daughter. The book is essential reading for those whose lives have been impacted by a loved one's suicide. Rivers spares no punches in describing what lead up to, and the aftermath, of her husband's death.

What could easily have been a heavy and morbid subject instead was handled gracefully, with candor and honesty. I think that the reviewers who concentrated on Rivers' comedy style instead of the overall subject matter really missed the point on this one.

Shockingly Great Book Filled With Insights, Serious Reflection, and Throwing TV Execs Under the Bus

Why did I wait so long to read this book? It's amazing. Very well written, filled with detailed behind-the-scenes information on television, and a much more serious book than one would expect from Rivers. It's not a comedy book by any means--instead it's a serious memoir of her life with her late husband and the disastrous Fox late night TV show.

She throws a lot of people under the bus, naming names of those who are Hollywood insiders. Barry Diller comes across the worst, and it's ironic that now he is pretty much a washed-up has-been while Rivers is flourishing. Johnny Carson's lawyer (who released his own book recently that gives a very different story) comes across as a mafia hit man. Even Ben Stein, who I had always had respect for, gets hit for making up a fake story that got published about Rivers at her husband's funeral--she threatens to sue and he threatens to make up even more stuff if she does! The whole thing makes you wonder why anyone would want to work with Hollywood people--they're all selfish crazy liars that think nothing of breaking contracts and threatening lawsuits.

There are also some very serious sections of the book where she pours her heart out. I had to sit back and contemplate some of the insights she gave regarding life, death, marriage, family, and God. She is a deep, introspective person who accepts much of the blame for what has happened to her.

The book isn't perfect--the biggest flaw is that the central story to the book gets passed over in just a few paragraphs. Yes, the book is really about her husband's suicide (which is very detailed) but the key moment in the suicide story is when Fox's Barry Diller fires her husband from her late night show and she has to make the choice between leaving with him or continuing the show. This whole scene gets less than two pages in the book and appears to be intentionally vague--is it to avoid lawsuits from Diller??? She also doesn't really mention what happened after her husband died--nothing about the memorial service or specifics about legal issues. She talks about her pain and her fighting with Melissa over whether to get rid of the house, but there are some big holes here that need to be filled.

Even the story of how she got her syndicated talk show is too brief and rushed. And at times the reader gets the feel that Rivers, while accepting some fault, is too quick to blame her husband on her own inability to stand up for herself. So while there are some great moments of detail regarding her Broadway debut and how Fox wrecked her late night show, this book should have been a lot longer and more detailed in some sections.

She is the only female network late night talk show host in TV history and the story behind how she split from Johnny Carson to take the Fox show now makes sense. She tried hard to talk with Carson before she accepted the Fox job and this book goes behind the headlines to explain it all. It's a must-read.
