Excellent writing , thoughtful analysis

Have been reading contemporary European History and have found this book to describe in real time the situation of the central european intellectuals towards the end of the cold war. The author is brilliant in his style and the comparison to touquville is not too far fetched. I especially liked the article comparing two movies shoah about the holocaust and heimat about the german experience in WW2, which leads to a discussion of the relationship of memory and the historical discipline.

His prose meanders between the scholarly and the spectacular - no small feat when dealing with Europe on the edge of seismic transformation. Wonderful book that desperately needs to be updated.

I am on my second copy of Backpacking One Step At A Time, and have used it for years on end to help fine tune the art of whittling down my weight, and improving the art of backpacking. When friends ask what I would reccomend gear wise, I toss them a copy of this book. But there have been so many advances in ultralight gear over the last 20 + years since the release of this book, that it is woefully behind the times. I love the book, I love the writing style of Mr. Manning, I just wish that there was a 5th or so Edition. I would hate to see the wonderful, and helpful information in this book go to waste because gear technology has changed. There is just too much priceless information to let it slide into oblivion.

A coffee table book that makes you forget the coffee.

One way to judge my opinion of this book is for me to remember that I have read it and reread it many times. It is a fascinating look into the working spaces of some of the greatest artists of the 20th Century. The photos are usually Liberman's own and while good, they are not usually "fine art". However, they do provide glimpses into places few have been, and that now no longer exist. Do I recommend it? Try borrowing mine--sorry! A companion piece is another book entitled, "Latin American Artists in Their Studios". The photos were taken by professionals and they look it. Both books are worthy of study for serious art enthusiasts. For more info on Liberman, read "Alex", the story of his life.

This is a wonderful book full of extraordinary photos of artists and Lieberman's accounts of his meetings with them. They almost leap out of the pages at you because he brings them so much alive, both in his anecdotes and his pictures. I don't know any other book which makes me feel that I know these talented people, as if I had just met them, and I keep going back into the book to meet them again. A really good present for any artist or art lover.

NOT FOR KIDS

NOT STORIES FOR KIDS. Wonderful wonderful book. I read the story of the first confession to my kids and we all laughed out loud at it. Brilliant! However - thats the only one i should have read to them. I got half way through the Christmas morning story and realised that i made a mistake - not for kids. Enjoy these for yourself because they really are great. but as i said - NOT FOR KIDS :-)

Read these in high school, never forgot

Thank you to my English Lit teacher in high school for introducing me to Frank O'Connor.
I think the popular movie, "A Christmas Story" rips off O'Connor's story but doesn't acknowledge it. No, there's no lady-leg lamp, but it's a great story, along with the others. I like the way he is able to project the perspective of different people. His descriptions of them are good, too. And then there's the inimitable Irish humor.
Gives you a feeling for Irish life in the old days.

Breitman thoroughly examines Heinrich Himmler's character and life and explores the racial ideology and planning that led to genocide. Superior biography of Himmler

Heinrich Himmler, one of the most reviled personalities in modern history comes fully to light in this insightful study. What is it that makes a person evil? That is at the heart of Breitman's absorbing book. Unlike a devilish Faustian caricature, the narrative shows the SS Reichsfuehrer, a mundane, pedantic organizer who came terrifyingly close to translating Hitler's vision of of a "racially-pure" Europe into reality.
Heinrich Himmler may be the personification of Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil." A man who fawned over children, stopped to pick flowers and was every thoughtful with those under him, quietly and efficiently produced the machinery to send millions to their death.
(...) Breitman's book is not a "popular biography" in the modern sense, but rather a scholarly and academic treatment. However, this is a weighty subject and the author accomplishes much more with this approach through a fascinating narrative that assures the reader that this is an exquisititely researched picture of one of the most dispised personalities of modern time. Shows Himmler as a most gruesome crusader.

Not a biography of the Reichsfuhrer, but a carefully researched and annotated analysis of his role in the final solution. Himmler's own office logs and appointment books, where extant, are convincingly used. The most thorough account to date of the so called Madagscar proposal which preoccupied the nazis in the late 1930s as a way of exiling Jews. Himmler's often mutually suspicious dealings with underlings such as Heydrich and Eichmann are particularly well portrayed, although his relationship with Hitler is sometimes sketchy. The years 1944 and 1945 are treated rather briefly, presumably because Himmler's initiatives were mainly restricted to trying to arrange coverup of the atrocities. But Breitman has done a first rate job in showing us how Himmler's bureaucratic mind ticked. The book illustrates that you don't need to be a personal sadist to organize murder on a massive scale.

Author or co-author of 3 prior books on socialist Germany & Jewry issues, this Yale & Harvard degreed Professor Breitman provides a scholarly analysis of Nazi Germany with especial reference to the 3 principals: - the Triumvirate of Hitler, Himmler (SS) & Heydrich (SD) & the roles each played formulating plans of re-Germanization that encompassed comprehesive plans to (1) purify Germanic Nordic blood lines by eugenic measures, (2) eliminate those designated as enemies of the Reich (Jews, Gypsies, Poles, Slavs, etc.) & (3) provide Lebensraum, especially Eastward for expansion of the Fatherland.

The book profiles Heinrich Himmler as a cradle-Catholic turning into a militant anti-Catholic & anti-Semitic who participates in Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch, & in short order becomes Reich Fuehrer SS, Chief of all Police, & confidant of Hitler. In 11 chapters we are introduced to the origin, delineation, & execution of the "Final Solution" to solve the "Jewish Question." The author attempts to demonstrate authorship of the genocide design & of its implementation was really a product more of Himmler's that Hitler's. Diverse details are provided on alternative plans including deportations to Africa or Madagascar, types of gasings, exclusions from euthanasia, labor camps, etc. All in all, the author's arguements are detailed but sufficiently conjectural as to make for good reading but truly falling short of singling out Himmler as chief architect. Of the many books on the Holocaust & Final Solution, Bretman's is the most detailed accounting of alternative plans and details unanticipated problems not forseen in ethnic cleansing & military in-fighting, etc. A good read for the student of genocide.
