But today grandma could use her food processor and microwave to do the same work in fewer hours. Lesem, formerly UPI's food editor, gives uncomplicated directions on making jams and more--pickles, relishes, even desserts and beverages. She points out that home canning can help lower the sugar, salt and preservatives in one's diet. Plus the availability of exotic and hybrid fruits and vegetables allows for such inventions as Sweet Carabola Pickles and Kiwi-Lemon Preserves. But be forewarned: even with modern equipment canning takes time; readers should study the steps to success before attempting a recipe. Also required is equipment (jars, a good-sized kettle, a jar lifter). Lesem draws recipes from a number of sources--including regional and historical cookbooks--and laces the book with anecdotes and information on the history of preserves. Illustrations not seen by PW.

This book contains hundreds of recipes for jams, conserves, and pickles. The book begins with a short introductory section covering canning, freezing, and storing preserves. It also includes a market guide, with tips on how to select the best fruits and vegetables for canning. The following chapters cover jams, jellies, and marmalades, fruit butters and spreads, pickles and relishes, chutneys and condiments, sauces, and recipes using preserves. There is also a short chapter on making fruit-flavored alcoholic beverages. Interspersed with the recipes are short informative or whimsical quotes from classic cookbooks or literature, as well as some very useful tips. End material includes a glossary, a source list, a bibliography, and an index.

Lesem points out that with today's smaller families, nobody wants dozens of jars of anything anymore, so her recipes are designed to create small batches with a minimum of fuss. Where feasible, she includes microwave instructions as well as stove instructions, and notes which method makes more sense for the recipe. Each recipe includes suggestions for the best method of storage (freezing, refrigeration, or canning, and for how long). Lesem also notes which recipes are easily doubled or halved, and what kinds of substitutions or variations work well. In addition to recipes for standard fruits such as strawberries and tomatoes, she also includes many recipes for lesser known fruits, such as quinces and guavas. Lesem states that her recipes use far less sugar than usual; she recommends only the minimum required for safe food preservation so that the flavor of the fruit remains sharp.

Lesem's goal is to achieve superior taste and/or produce preserves that cannot be (easily) purchased. Thus, she focuses on small yields using small amounts of fruit, which can often be found in the grocery store or farmer's market. The book is clearly not aimed at home gardeners trying to deal with massive amounts of produce all coming ripe at once. Nevertheless, by doubling (or even quadrupling) her recipes, or by trying several different recipes for the same ingredients, you should still be able to preserve your bumper crops with this book. Overall, I've found her recipes to be easy to follow, and her tips about individual recipes to be invaluable.

Could not help myself. I just devoured a jar of ice box dill pickles I made two weeks ago from thin sliced cucumbers and onions. I followed the recipe titled "FROZEN SLICED SWEET DILL PICKLES" on page 155 of the hardbound edition of Lesem book published in 1975. It was easy. I will report back on any further ventures into this book.

A sweet-natured fable

Stanley Shapiro's A Time To Remember is an amiable mix of old-fashioned science fiction and baby boomer nostalgia for a more innocent, pre-Viet Nam America. In 1986, a Dallas-based man, his girlfriend, and an almost campily eccentric professor experiment with travelling into the past. Our hero's goal? To go back to November 22nd, 1963, prevent Lee Harvery Oswald from assassinating President Kennedy, and save the life of his older brother who would die in a war that the book's heroes (and writer Shapiro himself) is convinced that JFK would have prevented had he lived. ... It's a neat, little plot and Shapiro tells his story with such sincerity that it hardly matters that many of the book's twists and assumptions don't hold up under closer scrutiny. (For instance, the book's central assumption that Kennedy would have truly pulled out of Viet Nam and by doing so, prevented every traumatic event of the next two decades always seems to be more a case of wish fullfilment than a truly believable possibility.) What makes the book work is Shapiro's loving recreation of a simpler, less cynical America, of the nation that basically disappeared into the upheavel of the '60s. Reading this book, it is impossible not to mourn that innocence that has been lost in the past few decades. Even if you don't agree with Shapiro's central assumption that Kennedy, if he had lived, would have preserved that innocence, it's hard not to wish he was right as you read this heartfelt, idealistic fable.

An entertaining alternative-history, time-travel novel

Stanley Shapiro's book was so captivating that I read it in two nights. A man meets an amicable Noble Prize winner, who has invented a time machine in 1985, and he convinces the scientist to send him back to 1963 to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and thus (it is averred) prevent the escalation of the Vietnam War, and the subsequent death of the man's brother.

There are lots of twists and turns, with alternative-history consequences--all of which are fascinating! What would have happened if Lyndon Johnson had not become president? Which presidents would have succeeded Kennedy, if he had not died? What if Lee Harvey Oswald had lived?

A note: Shapiro won an academy award in 1959 as a co-author of the original screeplay for the Doris Day/Rock Hudson film Pillow Talk (beating out The 400 Blows, North by Northwest, and Wild Strawberries--some of the greatest films in history)!

A moving and profound . . .

I'll freely admit it. I've been a huge fan of James Michener for at least 25 years -- but, up until now, have never reviewed one of his novels.

When I picked up "Legacy", I honestly didn't know what to expect. Written in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Constitution of the United States, Michener uses a fictional American soldier, caught up in the very real politics of the 1980's, and uses that soldier's musings about his own distinguished ancestors -- and their participation in many key moments of American history -- especially those that relate to the formation and subsequent development of the Constitution. I found these reflections to be a moving and effective way for Michener to make his point.

And what is that point? That for all its flaws, the Constitution of the United States has stood the test of time as one of the greatest political documents ever conceived by mankind. Originally, I felt that the inclusion of the text of the Constitution at the end of the novella was "padding" -- and readers of my other reviews know how I feel about "padded" books!

But upon concluding the story, I found myself re-reading the text of the Constitution -- and spending time in reflection.

I suspect that Michener would have approved.

Take A Step into the World of Michener

I truly relished this book! This was my first Michener novel and I plan on reading many more. The book did an excellent job of portraying the events of history. One may think that a novel involving history would be very dry and uninteresting. This one will prove those people wrong. A lot of American history with a twist of a modern-day tale proves to be entertaining.
The introduction "The Starrs" acquaints the reader with the main problem at hand. Norman Starr, a decorated solider is to go to trial on Monday in front of a Senate committee. His lawyer recommends that he learn all about his ancestor's roles in American history. The novel then takes the reader through stories of seven of his ancestors. Through his searching records and discovering their attributes, Norman gains vigor to fight his own accusations.
The first narrative is of Jared Starr, a lively and intelligent man who signed the Declaration of Independence and helped to develop the idea of a strong, central government. His son, Simon took over his father's role at the Constitutional Convention. There are numerous notes and observations written by Simon during the convention. Simon's son, Edmund, earned the rank of major in the Revolutionary War and obtained a seat on the Supreme Court. He eventually became Justice Starr. Next in line was Hugh Starr. He attended West Point and was active in the military during the Civil War. Due to his keen mind and bravery, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel Starr, Army of the Confederacy. So far the legacy has passed through the men of the family; however, the daughter of Hugh Starr is next in the family legacy. Emily Starr was a major participant in the Woman's Suffrage movement. The last male was Richard Starr, who was Norman's grandfather. He lived through the Great Depression and helped to develop programs to get the country out of that state. The second to last member of the legacy is Norman's mother, Rachel. She worked to have cities and rural areas possess balanced representation in voting.
These trips into the past help prepare and encourage Norman in his own troubles. The accuracy of the events in history draw the reader into the story and might even teach you a little. When reading this book, people will realize what exactly our ancestors have given us. Whether you are aware or not, they have provided us with everything we take for granted. Michener does an excellent job of tying together the facts and his own fiction. Two thumbs up!

...This book has something for everyone. If all you want is a steamy read then just read the sex chapters, if you're only interested in the history of gay rights/oppression just read the other chapters. The sex chapters are graphic, and romantically rendered (the author being a big fan of public sex.) The historic chapters are fascinating and disturbing, a first-hand account of the persecution that has ruined lives, the kind of persecution that a younger person might find extreme, appalling, and entirely un-American.
I suggest you read the entire book, as the author's intention is to make the persecuted more personal, and to explain that a life of street-sex may be more than a self-involved search for orgasms. (Rechy actually makes a pretty good case for narcissism as a life strategy.) The book is made truly beautiful by Rechy's intense honesty (always surprising coming from such an overt egotist.) The ugly and the beautiful, shown side by side, simultaneously, run concurrent, until one may be prompted to ask which is which. Rechy does not just defend his lifestyle, he also faces its many problems.
In the end , my favorite thing about the book is that it raised so many questions in my mind. Throughout reading the book I found myself becoming angry with many of the author's declarations, and the questions piled up. By the final chapter, however, Rechy had answered every one of them, ultimately offering a sort of philosophy of what it means to be gay, and what it means to live under the gun of others' ideologies.
I would recommend this book to ANYONE with an open mind, or ANYONE who needs to open their mind a little more.

Time capsule of a brief era

Back in the late '70s when this book first came out I remember snatching up a copy at the college bookstore. I was already familar with John Rechy after reading his groundbreaking 1963 novel City of Night. In The Sexual Outlaw I found a book that was as brutally honest as it was searing.

The book alternates between chapters in which "Jim" (the stand-in for Rechy) cruises the parks, bars, bathhouses and beaches of L.A. for sex and chapters in which Rechy turns his attention to such subjects as police corruption, the court system, discrimination, S&M, and a subject he returns to frequently - promiscuity as a revolutionary act.

As a Midwestern guy in his late teens, the book was both offputting and a revelation. Offputing because the open embrace of sexuality was an aspect of being gay I hadn't seen in the Midwest and a revelation because the arguments that Rechy put forth against those who would condemn gay sexuality gave me my first answers to refute the anti-gay attitudes that were prevalent at the time. (In fact, I was surprised to be reading a section of the book when I came across a statement I have used many times in support of gay issues. It hadn't occurred to me where the statement came from until I found it as I re-read the book.)

The Sexual Outlaw stands as a statement of its times. It's difficult to read it now without thinking of how many lives have been lost to AIDS. Looking back, it's hard to imagine how different life was in that brief 12-year period between the Stonewall riots and birth of the modern gay liberation movement in 1969 and the discovery of AIDS in 1981. This book is a sort of time capsule of that brief era.

Selznick, producer of such notable films as Gone with the Wind (1939) and A Star Is Born (1937) , was a protean and complex man. Much about this self-destructive yet brilliant egotist can be discovered in his (in)famous memos, from which author Thomson quotes generously. Thomson also had access to many of the people who knew Selznick intimately. It is perhaps this personal contact which engendered the seeming dislike of his subject that permeates this work, including the open editorializing about Selznick's numerous shortcomings. Thomson presents many facts (in sometimes rambling fashion) but does not quite succeed in the admittedly formidable task of capturing the man. Still, this is a useful adjunct to such works as Memo from David O. Selznick (Viking, 1973) and Hitchcock & Selznick (Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1987).

Exploring Hollywood's Perfectionist

Veteran San Francisco-based film historian David Thomson does a fine job of putting into perspective the life of one of the most complicated giants of the Hollywood scene in "Showman", a restlessman whose quest for perfection led ultimately to obsession, the danger of perfectionists. David O. Selznick grew up with the film industry in his blood and pursued the dominating passion to become the number one producer and culture influence during a period when the film industry ranked second only to that of automobile production.

Thomson traces Selznick's journey from his New York roots, when he would leave school and visit his father's office, dutifully studying film and making recommendations to his father, at the time one of America's giants in movie distribution. He had no desire for book learning and spurned the idea of attending an Ivy League college in the manner of so many rich men's sons and quit school early, moving directly into the film business, where fame was awaiting.

When Selznick's father lost his fortune and career as a result of the movement toward major film studios in Hollywood, the determined son moved to Hollywood and went immediately to work. His brother Myron did the same and became one of the industry's leading agents.

Gregory Peck, one of Selznick's most glittering discoveries, explained David O. Selznick's dilemma not long after his death in 1965. Peck revealed how Selznick had told him once with a tone of sadness how he had achieved a career niche with the production of the classic "Gone With The Wind" when he was a young man. As a result Selznick, who had achieved immortality with the great Civil War film classic before his fortieth birthday, felt the pressure of the classic film's giant shadow. He strove mightily to achieve another gigantic success like it, but finally ruefully lamented that when he died "it will say in my obituary story that David O. Selznick was the producer of `Gone With The Wind.'"

There was much more to Selznick than "Gone With The Wind", however, and one of his cornerstone achievements was bringing Britain's great director Alfred Hitchcock to Hollywood under contract to Selznick International Films. While the Hitchcock relationship involved clashes between two strong-willed titans, Selznick, a superb editor, was able to take script projects and scripts presented by Hitchcock apart, performing the role of a tough and uncompromising drill sergeant. A classic example was their first project together, the 1940 classic "Rebecca." The film, which starred Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, secured for Selznick the second of two consecutive "Best Film" Oscars, coming one year after "Gone With The Wind."

Selznick's quest for perfection led to a restlessness in which he took Benzedrine to stay awake and held conferences from late evening until dawn. He also was an obsessive gambler and drank too much, not to mention being also a compulsive womanizer, which put a strain on his marriage to Irene Mayer Selznick, daughter of the powerful head of MGM.

Selznick's volcanic marriage came to an end following his affair with the protégé to whom he became irrevocably linked in film annals, actress Jennifer Jones. It was his quest to put her on filmdom's highest pedestal through providing her with a vehicle that he hoped would secure even more enduring success than "Gone With The Wind."

The film was "Duel in the Sun" and it became immediately devoured with problems, beginning with spiraling budget costs and a Hollywood strike that plagued the production. According to Thomson, Selznick's preoccupation with overseeing every aspect of "Duel in the Sun" and seeking ultimate perfection stemmed from what the author viewed as a coming of age sexually for Selznick with Jones, the woman he would marry and spend the rest of his life with after divorcing Irene. He was particularly concerned with the steamy love scenes Jones performed with co-star Gregory Peck.

While "Duel in the Sun" would eventually become accepted as a scenic spectacle, though never garnering the tributes of "Gone With The Wind," on its initial release it was widely panned by critics and was a box office flop. It was a ponderous 26 hours long before Selznick began laboriously cutting and brought it down to a little over three hours in its initial release form.

After the problems encountered in "Duel in the Sun" Selznick went off to London, where he became embroiled in another gigantic flop, "The Paradine Case," which ended his contractual and working relationship with Alfred Hitchcock. He would have one more gigantic hit, but from afar, as the heralded "The Third Man" was produced and filmed in London and Vienna while Selznick peppered co-producer Sir Alexander Korda in London with endless memos from his Culver City office.

Thomson had a great deal to work with in the form of a fascinating achiever who led a colorful life and wrote some of the most memorable chapters of Hollywood history. He made the most of his opportunity with "Showman".

A Fascinating, Frustrating Man

As a long-time fan of Gone with the Wind, I've naturally grown interested in the man in whom all points of that beautiful film meet (to paraphrase Vivien Leigh). In this exhaustive, thoroughly researched biography from film historian and critic, David Thomson, I've learned much more than I ever thought I would about the bundle of nerves, energy and (sometimes) delusion that was David O. Selznick. Precocious as a child, Selznick was involved in his father's film work from the very beginning, showing an astute, if irritating eye for detail, and starting a lifelong habit of papering the world with correspondence. It is due to this correspondence, and the family's foresight in retaining it, that Thomson has been able to provide as full a picture of Selznick as he has. Thomson was given full access to the family files and other records, and received ample cooperation from Selznick's sons as well as his first wife, Irene. Jennifer Jones opted not to become involved, which is a shame, because she could have given an interesting perspective on Selznick's final years.

Nobody comes off terribly well here, and there are no stereotypical "heroes" or "villains." Selznick is generous, funny, loving and genuinely interested in film. He is also mercurial, paranoid, childish, deluded, unfaithful, self-pitying and self-destructive. The people with whom he comes in contact are shown in equally even-handed ways.

As other critics have noted, there are other, better books to read if you're interested only in the making of Gone with the Wind. Contrary to how history remembers him, Selznick did a great deal more than produce just that one film, and his entire life and career are covered here. Reading this full-length portrait of the man gives one an excellent idea of just what kind of energy and drive it took to helm these productions, and what a trial it must have been to keep up with such a person. Selznick was completely blind to the stress he caused his co-workers and staff. One illustrative story is that of Selznick dictating well into the wee hours of the morning and his guest suggesting that perhaps Selznick's secretary was tired. "I'm so sorry," Selznick said to the exhausted woman, "I should have offered you a benzedrine."

There were a couple of things that didn't sit well with me with regard to Thomson's telling of the story. The first is the standard auteur's conceit (subtle, but present, in this volume) that all European film is superior to all American film, which is a generalization that has always rankled. Films made in Europe aren't better simply because of where they are made, and there are American films that are superb. Also, Thomson seems to be fixated on Selznick's looks and how "ugly" he was. While not centerfold material, he was not repulsive by any stretch of the imagination, and it is thoroughly understandable that he would attract attention from women who like a great smile and an exuberant nature. On these two points, I realize that Thomson is entitled to his personal opinion - I was just hoping that he would retain the objectivity used so well in the rest of the book.
