About the Author
Alan W. Watts, who held both a master’s degree in theology and a doctorate of divinity, is best remembered as an interpreter of Zen Buddhism in particular, and of Indian and Chinese philosophy in general. Standing apart, however, from sectarian membership, he has earned the reputation of being one of the most original and “unrutted” philosophers of the twentieth century. Watts was the author of some twenty books on the philosophy and psychology of religion that have been published in many languages throughout the world, including the bestselling The Way of Zen. An avid lecturer, Watts appeared regularly on the radio and hosted the popular television series, Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life,in the 1960s. He died in 1973.

A surprisingly accessible selection that does not disappoint in what it reveals

Although from a number of sources I had faintly heard of Dorothy Day for many years before buying this book (ironically at a secondhand store near the Catholic nursing home caring for my dying father), I was baffled in many ways because of the obvious contradiction between her extreme religious orthodoxy, as noticed by Sara Maitland, her reputation as a social radical and acknowledged influence outside Catholicism.

It was only with Bill Kauffman’s eloquent explanation of what Day really stood for that I began to realise Dorothy Day is by no means a figure of fringe importance, but one of the most unique figures in twentieth-century America. As Kauffman shows, what she stood for was in fact quite the opposite of orthodox Marxism, being focused on extending private property to the masses rather than on expanding government, and on nonviolent communal work rather than on the violent revolution preached to me by student radicals. The context of this was a radical commitment to follow the way of Christ and help the poor - again something totally at odds with leftist doctrine to seize from the rich. Along with this commitment to help the poor was, as mentioned above, an extremely firm commitment to the traditions and rituals of the Catholic Church, to which Day had been attracted even as a child.

What has prevented Dorothy Day from being a hero to the "Austrian" Right is her vigorous defence of picketing and strikes to improve conditions, along with her belief (cherished by me from my days reading socialist journals) that producers and not distant executives should own the means of production. In ‘By Little and by Little’ one will see that Cesar Chavez was a pupil of Day. Many other Beat and Sixties icons admired Dorothy Day for simplicity of living and commitment to pacifism and anarchism – an ideal she retained from her IWW days.

All this might make ‘By Little and By Little’ seem rather tough reading, but by virtue both of Day's skill as a writer and Ellsberg's excellent editing, the book is a very easy read even for the merely curious. Some critics have described Dorothy Day’s writing as rather dry, but in comparison to most spiritual works it is anything but. Almost everything Dorothy Day wrote was grounded in her own experience of living with and helping the poor, so that what we read is totally practical, grounded and non-abstract. This is true even when she writes about devotion, the sacraments, and the saints. Nonetheless, what Day writes never becomes remotely dull because she can see so much in the “little things” of life, so that one always wants to re-read her complex story: a story that is undoubtedly among the hardest to replicate of any remotely famous person in world history.

Robert Ellsberg’s ability to omit sections that Sara Maitland shows in her few extracts to have been much tougher reading for those outside the Catholic Church might be seen by some as incomplete. However, for the majority who have never read Dorothy Day before it is a bonus because it allows the reader to enter Dorothy’s word extraordinarily easily. Ellsberg structures the book particularly well, so that one can find Dorothy's writings on a particular topic with superb ease.

All in all, ‘By Little and By Little’ is the best possible introduction to a difficult-to-understand but important figure in twentieth century America. There are many questions one can ask about her influence, but these are beside the point of Ellsberg’s collection.

A call to radical Christianity

A collection of Day's writing, it's a fascinating read, and one would hope a call to conversion for those who fail to see Christ in all around them, especially in the poor. Remember, we are told not to judge and to give freely to all who ask. Think about that the next time you're approached by a panhandler.

Best Introduction to Otto Rank

Originally published in 1959, this paperback--now out of print--is unique in providing samples of 5 books by Rank: "Myth of the Birth of the Hero" (1st ed.), "Art and Artist," "Modern Education" (o.p.), "Will Therapy," and "Truth and Reality. "Myth" is a youthful brief work (95 pages here); a larger and better 2nd ed. (1922 in German, English tr. 2004) is now available. Freund's choices and his 9-page introduction are very good. This is still the best short introduction to Rank, though it does not include "The Trauma of Birth," which was important in his break with Freud, though not his best work.

Dense in character, incident, and ideas, Smith's book is a compassionate history of The Group Theatre and the turbulent times that produced, adulated, and ground it up. Most of the greats in American actor training and theater practice came together in a blaze of idealism to change the quality of theater in this country by developing a high level of realistic ensemble acting and a theater directly responsive to political realities. Change theater they did, though not quite in the ways they intended. This book tells their story better than it has been told before. Its research is substantial, it is well written, and it is committed to what was right and lasting in The Group. Smith's book is required reading on the development of modern American theater.

An essential history of the century's most important theatre

A great book. It details one of the most important theater companies to ever come out of the United States. The stories are rich(as in the once in a lifetime story of the audience's response to Waiting for Lefty) and the background thoroughly researched. As a member of a young, struggling theater company it gave me inspiration and comfort the way great history should. I wish she would write a biography of their logical successor, Steppenwolf of Chicago.

Fascinating historical drama, and it's true!

Wendy Smith's study of the Group Theatre is impressive and seemingly definitive. Well-written, instructive, and entertaining, this book centers on a legendary theatrical company that lasted little more than ten years but created an indelible imprint on our culture. From the Group sprung the talents of Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, Elia Kazan, Clifford Odets, Harold Clurman, and Cheryl Crawford, all of whom had a major and lasting impact on the dramatic arts long after the Group had come and gone.

Smith lovingly (and this book is obviously a labor of deep love) retells the Group's history in a compelling and natural way that will leave quite an impact on the reader. She skillfully weaves together the cultural and political forces of the 1930s that shaped the Group's story. Very highly recommended!

Outstanding

This book is a treasure. Terkel tells the story of a Chicago that seems to be passing. The passing of Terkel's Chicago is not entirely a good thing--the mural artists people have forgotten, the Greek delis that have given way to Starbucks and the working stiffs that can't afford to live in the city anymore. The shared triumph of Joe Louis and the political rallies.
People from Chicago should read this book and look at it from time to time to remind themselves about what makes Chicago the city that it is.

A Paen to the City of Big Shoulders

Even though this reader lived in Chicago for just two (bless 'em) years, the city still has a magnetic hold on him.
There is Marshall Fields and Soldier Field. Kup's Column and the Cubbies. Big Stan and Big John cut off at mid-section by low-hanging clouds. Mayor Washington scrapping it up with Fast Eddie Vrdoliak in city council. Lake effect snow. And those friendly, unreserved, Midwestern people speaking with a peculiar, broad accent to us transplanted, you talkin' to me-type Northeasterners.
That's why "Chicago" is pure magic. All of the people, history, politics, and architecture are skillfully rolled into this slim and lively volume. Terkel catches Chicago's character and bottles it like no other chronicler could.
"Chicago" is also a freeze-frame, capturing a city whose edgy charm and sometimes gritty urban qualities are fading with the dawn of a new century. In this sense, the book is elegiac.
Ronald Reagan, speaking in a public service message for the Chamber of Commerce years ago, said it was unfortunate that he had only a minute to talk about why he liked Chicago. So it is with this review. But you'll have more than a minute with your memories when you open this book.

A classic full of sympathy with the losers of the first Indu

E.P. Thompson's magnum opus is a real classic. No serious student of social history should omit reading it! As a history student, I had read it more than 25 years ago. When I reread large parts of it, recently, I noticed - with the life experience acquired since that time - that the book is an even finer gem than I remembered.
It is clear that the author shows a certain bias in favour of the "losers" of the first Industrial Revolution: the English artisans in the textile trade, who in the late 18th and early 19th century were being reduced to the position of factory workers condemned to work under appalling conditions. But this bias does not substract anything from the worth of this study. On the contrary, such bias, or rather such sympathy towards the groups the author focuses on, is probably necessary to motivate a historian in examining his subject in such detail and writing such a full report about the activities of Jacobites, Luddites, Owenites, Chartists and all the other groups who did not accept the oppressing social and economic order of their time. Of course, such sympathy (or bias) should be kept in check by professional rigour, which is certainly the case in profesor Thompson's magnificent study.
The author persuasively argues that, during the generation between 1815 and 1848, England had come much closer to a Revolution of the kind France had gone through between 1789 and 1794, than the "Whig Interpretation of History" would make us believe.
Some of Thompson's assertions are not beyond dispute. He claims, for instance, that the position of the English poor had definitely deteriorated compared to the 18th century. It has been convincingly shown that their position was already dismal long before the Industrial Revolution started. The historians' dispute over this question is still far from being concluded.
Thompson also puts forward the question how so many Englishmen of that time could have been so callously insensitive towards the suffering of the poor. He blaims it for a good part on Methodism, the creed that tended "to make man his own slave driver". He approvingly cites a late 19th century historian: "A more appalling system of religious terrorism, one more fitted to unhinge a tottering intellect and to darken and embitter a sensitive nature, has seldom existed."'

A Classic in the Field of Social and Labor History

Well, it took me darn near a month to finish this monster (800+ pages) of a book. Can't say I regret the experience, though. Truly , this is a masterpiece, both in terms of its substance and its approach. I could quite easily write more then a thousand words on this book, but hey, this is Amazon, right?
Before I begin, I would like to state up front that I am not a historian or a graduate student of history. Please forgive me if my review contains incorrect statements.
"The Making of the English Working Class" is precisely what its (awkward) title describes: a history of the developments leading to the emergence of the modern industrial working class in England (and Scotland, sort of. Wales and Ireland are excluded, although Irish immigrants living in England to figure in some parts of the book). The time period covered is roughly the 1790's to the 1840's. Thompson starts with a description of "Dissent", discusses the influence of the French Revolution on that tradition (Dissent), spends a good chunk of the book describing the effect of the industrial revolution on the lives and lifestyles of the workers in industrial England, and then spends an equal amount of time describing the reaction of the workers and their leaders to this adjustment in circumstances.
Along the way, Thompson takes a hatchet to historians on the left, right, and center. His section on the change in circumstances of the workers in England is most critical of writers like F.A. Hayek, i.e. those writers who try to say that the industrial revolution "wasn't that bad" or "wasn't bad at all" for the workers. He devotes a good part of Part II of the book to attacking the methods of statistical or economic history. His preference is to use documentary evidence of the time. In this way, the book (published in the 60's) is a forerunner of historical "postmodernism"(Oh, please forgive me for the term), where authors abandon "objective" evidence (economic statistics) in favor of "subjective" evidence (pamphlets, letters and newspapers).
I guess that's hardly a revolutinary arguement now-a-day, but back then, I can hardly imagine.
His section on the reaction of workers to the industrial revolution is rather more critical to historians of the left and center, who sought to discount the violence associated with the Luddite movement as somehow unrepresentative of the working class movement in England. Thompson's revisionist history of the Luddite movement is a tour de force. Really, it's breathtaking.
In my opinion, the book kind of loses steam after that section. Thompson has some harsh words for the London based "leaders" of the workers movement, and I felt his discussion of Owenism left too much to the readers imagination. I don't suppose this book was meant for someone with only a loose grounding in English history, but none the less, that's what I have, so I'm just stuck.
To the extent that I have anything critical to say about this book, it's that Thompson at times presupposes a graduate level education in English history. I haven't read AJP Taylor or Hayek or any of the other authors Thompson attacks. IN the end, though, I felt like it didn't hurt my enjoyment of this book. I would highly recommend it, although you should set aside a good chunk of time to make your way from beginning to end.

Thompson's book is THE ground-breaking work of social history for our century, pioneering in the "history of everyday life" (also taken up by Foucault, de Certeau, Davis, etc.); the history of working people; and the consideration of culture in the past. Unlike most other social history it is also brilliantly written and accessible. Buy it.
