A wonderful overview of a holistic counseling approach

AWAKENING THE HEART is a classic introduction to the contrast between eastern and western perspectives on the mind and counseling. It is an edited collection of essays on meditation, self-awareness, humility, and the interaction between "patient" and "counselor" - indicating that the counselor is affected by the process, as is the patient.

It was a good book for me when I was early in my counseling career (ca. 1985), having exited an engineering career and become re-educated as a social worker. I gave gift copies to colleagues when I recently changed positions, and it was well-received, some 13 years after its initial publication. A good read for any counselor or any of his/her customers who are somewhat educated.

Great for self-counseling and managing change

This book is worthwile to purchase even if you read only one chapter "What is the self?", where one comes to terms with a definition of Satori and how to evolve creative capacity. I recommend this book if you want to be in the center of managing your change process in life.

Roshi in "Where is the Self?" discusses the need to know how you are put together and what puts you together, essentially "know thyself" (Welwood, 1983). This allows one to become aware of a "unifying integrating function of the center of gravity." This produces respect for oneself and for others as well, He talks about true love as the "realization of the asbolute center of gravity," a two-phased process (I am paraphrasing on what Satori is) when one is able to 1) to realize absolute Self (there is no self "I am" consciousness left to experience), and when this unification breaks up and 2) to realize the individual self which objectifies the absolute (external projection of oneness, unity consciousness)

Satori means, "there is only one center of gravity in the universe, and you are sitting in the center of gravity," basically what one sees as the ultimate reality must become one's own experience. Once you have this experience within yourself, then "there is no need to go on seeking things outside yourself."

His basic thesis is that our culture cannot succeed and sustain itself as long as it is based on a partial definition of the Self. Those in Las Vegas in a perpetual search of meaning are stuck on Satori, incomplete on the first step without awareness of the second. He goes on to talk about the "essential tragedy of modern education," that we are taught only to affirm this one aspect. With a one-sided perspective one is "forever seeking that which appears only as an object to yourself...... You are enslaved by it, and you can never experience life in its true joy." Since you only "experience the world as external to you and you are never unified with it, then you are forever seeking the world." In fact, this is pervasive in modern civilization and the culture we know.

This book was on the "optional reading" list for a class I was taking while earning my Master's in psychology. It's simply the best book I've read so far about integrating psychology and spirituality. I also have read John Welwood's other books and he's remarkable.

The voice of truth and conscience

Andrei Sakharov was one of the greatest fighters for human rights of the 20th century.
He gained the 1975 Nobel Prize and in 1979 was exiled to Gorky.
In this book Sakharov outlines his vision of the USSR and the world at the time.
In this moving and forthright book Sakharov outlined the problems of the Soviet Union of the time including poverty, poor living standards, alcoholism, and economic stagnation. He criticized the priviliges of the Nomenklatura, or Communist Party elite.
He attacked the discrimination and repression of minorities such as the Jews, Ukrainians,Crimean Tatars, Volga Germans and Meshki Turks.
In 1944 the Crimean Tatars became victims of a criminal forced resettlement during which half of the children and old people died of hunger and cold. They were denied the right to resettle in their native Crimea until after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the independence of Ukraine.
Their fate was shared by the Volga Germans, the Meshki Turks and others.
He outlines the hypocrisy and blindness of leftwing intellectuals of his time, and during the Stalin years before.
During the 1920s a Western writer declared that the "rumors" of famine in the USSR were exaggerated "Nowhere have I eaten so well as in the USSR" he said at the very time that NKVD "anti-profiteer" detachments were machine gunning starving children who were trying to cross the border.
Sakharov attacks the hypocrisy of the leftist intellgensia who showed a moral blindness in condoning human rights abuses and crimes in Communist states.
Their moral perfidy is echoed today in their support of terror groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, their vicious prejudice against Israel, and their support for both Arab/Islamic dictatorships like Iran, Syria, Libya and Sudan as well as revolutionary/Communist regimes like Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea and Zimbabwe.
In this book he condemmned leftists who were so vocal about the excesses of Pinochet's Chile but were silent about the mass executions in Cambodia and Vietnam by the Communists.
Sakharov attacked Soviet support for totalitarian regimes like Gaddafi's Libya and Idi Amin's Uganda, as well as Soviet support for the genocide of the Ibos in Nigeria and the Kurds of Iraq.

Sakahrov saw the greatest threat to the world coming from the totalitarian challenge. This is as true today as it was then.
His call for Western unity and strength in the face of totalitarian evil is as relevant today as it was in the 1970s.

Bold, dissident work from the Cold War

It is easy to forget those who were heavily involved in political landscapes of old. As our concerns shift from Eastern Europe to the Middle East and Far East, memories of our standoff with the USSR have faded or, at least, blurred.

With twenty years now dividing us from the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991, average people have largely forgotten the efforts of Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov, a physicist who took part in the development of nuclear weapons during the 1940s and 50s. Sakharov, a product of Moscow State University who died in 1989, was a leading force in both diplomatic change and reform within his own country. His writings and political activism toed a very fine line when critics of the Soviet regime were regularly imprisoned or deported.

Political frontiers have built up and dissolved since the mid-1970s, so observers can easily lose sight of the courage behind Sakharov's outspokenness. 'My Country and the World,' first published in 1975, may read like a simple moral tract nowadays; but the essay was in stark contradiction to Soviet policy when it first appeared. The essay was critical of both Soviet life and foreign diplomatic relations, positions that could be fatal for those who voiced them. Sakharov fought on, however, by offering correctives toward disarmament, improved understanding between countries, and greater social freedoms for all involved.

Vintage Books' original run of 'My Country and the World' is a very readable translation by Guy V. Daniels, a French and Russian scholar known for works of other dissidents and the plays of Vladimir Mayakovsky. The five-section, 109-page book offers Sakharov's comprehensive views on the state of Soviet and international affairs at its time of publication.

Most impressive is the first section, an open critique of Soviet society. Here, Sakharov examines how the USSR's heavy-handed economics and lack of basic freedoms such as international travel and non-conformism have stilted enormous Soviet potentials. He is especially critical of the USSR's grossly mismanaged labor system, the Soviet justice system, and its harsh treatment of political prisoners. Other issues include the formation of a nomenklatura, a sort of 'inner party' that holds wealth and privilege in Soviet life, and the discrimination of various ethnic groups such as Germans and those in the Soviet republics.

The four remaining parts are international in approach. Section two discusses our human right to leave and reenter one's country at will. Section three is an account of disarmament issues, reflecting Sakharov's own experience in the Third Idea project. Sakharov goes on to defend the original aims of U.S. intervention in Vietnam through his section on Indochina and the Middle East before finishing out with criticism of Western intellectuals and journalists who hold naive (and, Sakharov concludes, politically dangerous) views on life in the Bloc nations.

On the surface, 'My Country and the World' is an idealistic tract that may now seem high-flown and preachy. When considering the state of affairs at its time of publication, however, Sakharov's essay was a courageous pearl of wisdom and it cost him dearly. Sakharov, who faced pressure from the Soviet authorities since becoming an activist in the 1950s, managed to avoid disappearing into prison or facing banishment from his country. Still, the relationship with his country became increasingly strained. When selected for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975, he was not allowed to visit Oslo (his wife attended in his place). After protesting the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Sakharov was banished to Gorky, a city off-limits to foreigners, in 1980. He could not return to Moscow until 1986.

Though topical, 'My Country and the World' gives an interesting retrospective on political situations of the 1970s and Cold War tensions. Copies of the Vintage Books softcover from 1975 have circulated widely and are available on the Internet (including Amazon), in used book stores, and in libraries.

A small masterpiece about the reality of illusion.

Those who know Thomas Mann for his weightier books will be surprised to see how light this short novel is.
Felix Krull is a "Con Man." This book recounts his early years, from early childhood, through his ingenious method of avoiding being drafted into the army, to his initial jobs. He avoids the army by appearing too eager to join, thus inducing suspicion regarding his mental stability. He works his way up by recognizing that having a good appearance and a willing attitude more than compensates for lack of experience or ability. Being a confidence man requires supreme self-confidence and Felix has that in abundance.
For me the pivotal scene is when Felix is taken to the theater by his father to see a play in which one of the father's old school chums is starring. Felix is captivated by the magnetic attraction between audience and star. This is made even greater by the back stage visit he and his father make after the show. The star turns out to be much shorter than he appeared to be, with reddish hair instead of black, and rough skin instead of the smooth skin he appeared to have. His manner is coarse, not like the refined character he portrayed. Topping it off, he is in need of continuous reassurance that he did a good job, whereas the character he played was supremely confident and poised. This is the key to Felix's realization that for most of the world illusion is reality, and that the illusionist needs the audience just as the audience needs the illusionist.
Whether Mann had a sequel planned is uncertain. We do leave Felix as a young man, wondering what his further adventures and potential growth might have been.
As it is, this is a delightful story with a profound subtext. Are there any people like Felix around today?

Mann in a humorous vein

This picaresque novel of adventure by the writer of such ponderous masterpieces as _The Magic Mountain_ is one of my favorite books.

Many readers who come to it after _Buddenbrooks_ or "Tonio Kroeger" note the parallels Mann felt existed between the artist and the confidence man. In Tonio Kroeger, the eponymous central character has an encounter in his home town where he's mistaken briefly for a con man. In the earlier story, it's an incident full of irony. In _Felix Krull_, Mann turns that theme on its head and plays it as a burlesque and shows us the artist seen through the fun-house mirror of the artist-equals-con man metaphor.

A number of the themes of Mann's earlier novels are taken up here in humorous and ironic form, e.g., the rise of the artist through the decay of a respectable family (a theme in _Buddenbrooks_) is transmogrified into Krull's lineage from a good-but-dissolute family; in consequence, their respectability is more apparent than real, and as much an illusion as Felix Krull's career of deceit.

It may be that Mann intends that Felix Krull symbolically represents decay beneath his disguise (like the actor Mueller-Rose in the story), but the reader doesn't *feel* this is true. Krull might be the healthiest character in Mann's work, full of that zest for life that so wearied the bourgeois manque' Tonio Kroeger in Italy. Felix Krull isn't a "manque'" anything; a consummate actor on the stage of life, he is simply whatever or whomever he wants to be.

The elegance and suavity of the writing, captured well by the Lindley translation, are both a pleasure to read, and an analogue for the well-oiled confidence skills of the first person narrator. It's helpful to remember that we are being told "true confessions" by a man who has made his way in life by taking people in.

Another feature of the work, not often commented on, is the element of parody. Mann wrote the book with one eye, as it were, on the great German picaresque novel by Hans von Grimmelshausen, _Simplicius Simplicissimus_. Krull's travails, talents, and successes are at times a humorous transposition of those in Grimmelshausen's famous work. (Grimmelshausen's book is worth seeking out in its own right.)

And then, there's the Goethe reference: the artful, confessional style was intended (or so Mann claimed in an interview) as a parody of Goethe's style in _Dichtung und Wahrheit_. Mann had a great deal to say about Goethe during his career, much of it freighted with a lot of seriousness (e.g., see his essay on "Goethe and Tolstoy"), but proves here he could regard his great predecessor with more than a little irony.

Because the book was started back in 1910, and reflects on a period 20 or more years earlier, it's a historical time capsule of sorts. This might annoy some readers; for others, it grants the work a certain period charm.

Finally, we should remember that the work is incomplete. This was intended to be the first part of a full-dress fictional memoir. Had he lived longer, Mann might have written 2 more volumes. The result is that the book is a bright fragment rather than a fully realized work of art. We're left to imagine what the remainder of Felix Krull's adventures might have been like. In an interview in 1955, Mann remarked that Krull would have a matrimonial adventure, as well as a prison sojourn and a retirement in England.

A pity we can never see the completed work, and cannot know with certainty how Krull's career would develop. I, for one, am happy with what Mann was able to bequeath us. I feel almost as if he left me a legacy.

A Clever and Subtle Masterpiece

The Confessions of Felix Krull, published in the year of Thomas Mann's death, 1955,is a remarkable work of humor and satire. It is hard to believe that it was written by a man in his late 70's. The book had its origins in a fragment published by Mann long before, in 1909, even before Death in Venice, probably his most well known work, at least these days. Perhaps this accounts for the youthful humor mixed with a wisdom and tolerance that a man of the world like Mann attained after a long, eventful and thoughtful life.
Felix Krull is a charmer from the earliest age, a knowing manipulator of his surroundings and even his own body, able to induce fevers by self-will to avoid the boredom of school and bemuse his family doctor into acquiescence. Blessed by astonishing beauty that affects all that come into contact with him and fuels an arrogance and self-confidence that probably would not be tolerated in someone of lesser grace, he is able to insinuate himself up the social ladder into the most rarefied social circles of aristocratic Europe. Through his own wit and the vanities and susceptibilities of his victims, he brazens his way through the most delicate situations.
While it is not necessary to have a familiarity with Mann's life and other works to enjoy this book, such knowledge will add greatly to the fun. There are many autobiographical references and self-caricatures dispersed amongst the characters who knowingly or unknowingly are seduced by the irrepressible Felix and some of the observations and feelings that Felix describes are most definitely those that Mann himself strongly felt.
Recurring motifs throughout Mann's works find expression here. Most striking is the identification of Felix with the Greek god Hermes, here in his aspect of god of thieves. Look back to Death in Venice and see how Mann uses the god Hermes in reference to Tadzio, especially at the end when Aschenbach lies dying and Tadzio as Hermes, the messenger of death, beckons in the waves. For who is Felix but a more grown, more self-aware Tadzio? But instead of death, Felix brings smiles. After all, as he is quick to point out "Felix" means "happy."

It's no accident that the first chapter in this anecdotal memoir is titled "All Politics Is Local." O'Neill, recently retired Speaker of the House, learned politics growing up in Irish-Catholic Boston, and these roots pervade his 50-year political career. He relates his experiences by stringing together apocryphal stories and true incidentsembellished, no doubt, by collaborator Novak. Of particular interest are his assessments of presidents from FDR on. O'Neill is not reticent about criticizing Democratic leaders as well as Republicans. Though short on political analysis, these entertaining recollections highlight a dedicated politician whose contributions go far beyond "local politics." Jack Forman, Mesa Coll . "All politics is local."

The man who coined this phrase, Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill, one of the most influential congressmen in history, never forgot his roots. Always looking out for "the little guys" who elected him, but always making them feel like "big guys," Tip O'Neill never lost an election following his elevation to the Massachusetts House in 1936 at age twenty-two. Sixteen years later, he received a private tip from John F. Kennedy, a year ahead of time, that JFK would be giving up his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1952, and O'Neill prepared early and ran for and won that seat, soon becoming as savvy a backroom politician as old Joe Kennedy ever was, and considerably more honest. As Speaker of the House from 1977 until his retirement in 1987, O'Neill enjoyed his role as a power broker, while improving the lives of ordinary citizens instead of feathering his own nest.

With William Novak acting as writer/recorder, O'Neill reminisces like the consummate "Irish politician" that he was, telling lively stories about the country's most powerful leaders, often telling "tales out of school" in the interest of "honesty." Every reader will know exactly how O'Neill felt about each of the Presidents and politicians with whom he worked. He helped JFK try to buy off Edward McCormack (unsuccessfully) when McCormack was running for Senate against Teddy, but he disliked Bobby, considering him a "self-important upstart and a know-it-all." Though he disagreed with the Gulf of Tonkin resolution authorizing LBJ to "take all necessary measures" in Vietnam, he voted for it, then publicly changed his mind, a move that infuriated LBJ, who needed all the support he could muster.

His observations of Nixon suggest that Nixon, a master manipulator, completely lost touch with reality regarding Watergate, joking about issues that were not even slightly funny. He regarded Jimmy Carter as naïve and completely unable to get anything done, in part because he surrounded himself with people O'Neill considered arrogant, especially "Hannible Jerkin." And he never understood how Ronald Reagan could have managed two terms as President when his grasp of issues was so limited, citing an example in which Reagan confused President Grover Cleveland with the ballplayer Grover Cleveland Alexander. Reagan, he says, was often speechless at State Dinners, until the topic turned to movies and Hollywood.

Though Tip O'Neill's most memorable legacy may be that he brought The Big Dig to Boston and changed the face of the city, he never failed to sponsor legislation which would benefit poor "little guys." In this fascinating, sometimes gritty depiction of backroom political maneuvering, O'Neill elevates power broking to an art form with politicians as the artists, creating an unforgettable tale of old-time politics the likes of which we will probably never see again. n Mary Whipple

Excellent for Young Aspriring Politicians

I recently received this book as a gift from an older, wiser cousin after I asked for something to help me learn a bit more about the politics of our nation. It was superb. I found it difficult to put down and it has inspired me to seek out more political memoirs and learn more about the infamous politicans that have made their mark on Washington. Tip O'Neill is a magnificent story teller and his honest opinions make the book that much more true to life. I highly recommend it to anyone, young or old, looking for a good book with a lot of class.

Entertaining and enlightening

MAN OF THE HOUSE reads more like a conversation with a favourite grandparent than the memoirs of someone with fifty years of experience in politics and the book is the better for it. The book is vaguely set up in chronological order starting from his childhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts and ending with his retirement from his position as Speaker of the House. But Tip (one feels to be on a first-name basis after the familiar tone of the book) sprinkles many anecdotes and jokes throughout the text, giving it a conversational flavour instead of reading like a straight history.
O'Neill does not try to hide the fact that he is a Democrat and an extremely partisan one at that. However, he does not let his philosophies blind him to what people really are. He remembers the flaws that were present in some of his Democratic colleagues and speaks about the good qualities in the Republicans in Congress. Partisanship never gets in the way of friendship and he recalls many stories of socializing with members of both parties after a day spent fighting legislative battles.
It's fascinating to read about (what is now) history through the eyes of someone who was witnessing first-hand so much of it. An entire chapter is dedicated to the Watergate scandal of the Nixon years and we can see it unfolding as he saw it. Nixon can be seen through the eyes of someone who was not a part of his close inner-circle, but who was closer than the general public. He offers his thoughts on the pardon given by President Ford and his mixed feelings on the subject.
All the Presidents that he worked with are given a chapter of their own where O'Neill offers praise, criticism and a few humourous anecdotes. As expected, fellow Bostonian Jack Kennedy receives the most attention, having one chapter dedicated to him and another to his family. O'Neill describes a man who surrounded himself by a team of people that were the best in the business when it came to getting someone elected, but who really did not have the first clue in how to deal with legislators.
O'Neill describes many of the battles he had with Kennedy's successor, President Johnson, on the subject of Vietnam. O'Neill broke from the President's position and was quite vocal in his condemnation of the war. The deep division in the Congress and the conversations he had with the President are given a lot of attention. O'Neill details how, while agreeing with the sentiments of the protestors, he felt that they were distracting from the message. Every time someone would smash a window in anger during a gathering, instead of reports of general unrest, the story in the press would be that this was another action supported by Tip.
The last two presidents that Tip served with were the two in office during his tenure as Speaker of the House. President Carter, the Democrat, and President Reagan, the Republican, are seen to Tip as being almost complete opposites. Where every conversation O'Neill had with Carter demonstrated the President's obvious knowledge in on a given subject, virtually all Reagan had to talk about were old movies and baseball. The main difference in their leadership styles, and what Tip found so frustrating, was the difference in which the two men viewed the Congress. Carter took a much more passive role, not really understanding the way that Washington worked. In contrast, Reagan would be constantly on the phone to the members of Congress, sweet-talking them into supporting his bills.
This was a very interesting read and I highly recommend it. O'Neill himself comes across as a very warm and friendly person who, in all his years in government, never forgot where he came from. His fights over various pieces of legislation down the years always came down to a simple desire to help the little guy.

This appears to be a slightly shortened version

The US edition has curious omissions compared to the French original. In one omitted passage (IIRC) Bunuel mentions a postcard he received from Andrzej Wajda. It would be nice if the fine print for the book included "Portions of the original have been omitted for this edition." The recent Ken Mogg's book on Alfred Hitchcock has also been shortened for the American market. I find it quite annoying.

A beautiful little book

Bunuel gave some interviews towards the end of his life discussing his long list of movies. That's why I was delighted to find that his autobiography--which is one of the greatest, if not the greatest by a filmmaker--does not dwell on them. Instead Don Luis chronicles his childhood and upbringing, the relationships he cultivated, and meditates on life, love, death, art, alcohol and cigarettes. Many of the stories from his younger days are even more surreal than his movies. He writes in detail about his stormy friendships with Garcia Lorca and Dali, about his half-hearted attempt to try Hollywood on for size, meetings with Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, and others. The book is not somber or sentimental, it's not over-inflated. Bunuel's voice does not intimidate, it soothes. He's a master storyteller, a very gifted and generous writer.

Writings by film directors tend to resemble their films, and "My Last Sigh" is no exception. Bunuel's films are anarchic, funny, unpredictable, subversive, and often disturbing in a way that's hard to pin down. So is this, his autobiography!
Though he disclaims literary talent, Bunuel turns out to be a wonderful writer, and the book is stuffed with piquant anecdotes and elegant observations. I'm afraid to quote examples, because this review would go on forever. Suffice to say that, if you could choose to live any person's life, Bunuel's would be a hard choice to beat, just for the adventure and entertainment value. This may be my favorite book written by a filmmaker.

The most objective biography of the enigmatic A. P. Hill.

My forebears served under Hill from his assumption of the III Corps until their end and his. This work is the best I have found, but Hill remains an enigma in the end. One must wonder why Lee promoted his most impulsive and contentious Mj.General to Corps command, and must conclude that Longstreet was right when he concluded that the three corps arrangement was "too much Virginia." Robertson aptly titles his 2nd Day at Gettysburg chapter "Bystander to Defeat," but offers no real explanation for the usually agressive Hill's uninvolvement on this pivotal day. One is left to conclude that the unfinished grudge with Longstreet and rivalry with R. H. Anderson led Hill to malicious obedience to his orders and noninvolvement in the battle. Similar accusations caused the vilification of Longstreet, yet Hill escapes unscathed. Robertson does do what few others have by showing Hill's conscientious defense of the Petersburg lines. This portion of The War, so much like WWI, is the least covered and least understood period. Robertson is very helpful here. A good read and a valuable addition, but much is left unsaid.
