Does History have meaning?
By C. Roland Marcus
Though published more than forty years ago, this book has contemporary relevance. A series of lectures given by the author at Cambridge University, it covers topics such as "The Historian and His Facts" and History as progress." The author rejects the notions of Hegal and Marx that history automatically has transcendent meaning. On the other hand neither it it series of random events. He tells us that all history is rinsed through the background filters of those who write it. Therefore "revisionist history" is not an occasional accident produced by over zealous observers, it is the only kind of history available to us. This a good read, perhaps marred slightly by over generalizations. The group discussion in which I participated was simulating.

History and how it is made
By Bruce Pulbrook
I bought this book on impulse because it seemed relevant to my quest to make sense of the world during the global financial crisis and great recession that began in 2007. I'm glad to say I enjoyed the book and have been rewarded by study and reflection on the ideas presented.

What is History is based on a series of six lectures given at Cambridge University in 1960 and includes notes on the author's later thoughts through to his death in 1982.

Born in 1892, Edward Hallett Carr was an English historian educated at Cambridge who served in the Foreign Office, worked as assistant editor of The Times during World War II, and held academic positions at Cambridge and Oxford.

Carr sees history as a process of perceiving, selecting and interpreting; weighing the roles of individuals and society; asking why things happened and assessing where they are going; accumulating knowledge of the past to increase our mastery of ourselves and our environment now and in the future.

Chapter One deals with the "facts" of history - how they are perceived, selected, arranged and interpreted by successive historians, and finally interpreted by the reader "through eyes of the present."

Chapter Two explores the relative significance of the roles of the individual and the society in which they live. Carr argues that individuals are the products of the conditions in which they live and their interactions with others.

Carr notes 'Man's capacity to rise above his social and historical situation seems to be conditioned by the sensitivity with which he recognizes the extent of his involvement in society.

Chapter Three discusses the claims and counter-claims about whether history is a science. Carr observes that human beings are complex and are themselves both the subject and object of history.

Chapter Four discusses the problem of establishing causation in history. History can be viewed as a series of accidents occurring by chance. Carr acknowledges a role for accidents but considers long-term causes to be of higher importance.

Chapter Five discusses the notion of progress and its relationship to history. Progress results from the accumulation of assets and knowledge, of which history is a part.

Chapter Six consists of concluding reflections on history. He notes that Freud enabled deeper understanding with the insight that both we and those we are studying, can be unaware of our own underlying motives.

Extracts from Carr's notes towards a second edition included the observation that he thinks 'social history is the bedrock' ... and he believed that 'An understanding of the past carries with it an enhanced insight into the future.'

For me, a particularly interesting aspect was the discussion of the role of "great men," or leaders, in history - the extent to which individuals change the course of history. This is an issue not only for historians but business people and investors - How much difference can a chief executive make? And does he or she justify their earnings?

My favourite quotation in the book is from Hegel on leadership:"The great man of the age is the one who can put into words the will of his age, tell his age what its will is, and accomplish it. What he does is the heart and essence of his age; he actualizes his age."

For me, this book was an enjoyable introduction to historiography, or the theory of history, and has deepened my understanding of how to interpret both news reports and history books.

Tragle has not only collected all the extant primary documents (the trial record, newspaper accounts, letters, diaries and other contemporary sources, most of which are published here for the first time), he made several trips to Southampton County to retrace the steps of the rebels and to interview the present inhabitants, both black and white, on the local traditions surrounding Nat Turner."

Martin Gardner's Annotated Alice is definitive.
By A Customer
Martin Gardner avoids questionable psychoanalyticinterpretations, and instead describes the objects ofCarroll's satire that have been forgotten since the Victorian era. His notes allow us to fully enjoy Lewis Carroll's humor, and to see why Alice was so loved by children then (and by mathematicians now).

From Publishers Weekly
Although it covers well-worn ground--a 17-year-old sailor's passage to manhood in the 1950s--veteran journalist Hamill's latest novel is told with such emotional urgency and pictorial vividness that it has the flavor of a well-liked old story rediscovered (in fact, it shares a good deal of atmosphere and incident with Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues ). Brooklyn-born Irish Catholic Michael Devlin (who narrates from middle age, heading toward his third divorce) arrives at his Navy base in Pensacola, Fla., with ambitions to become a cartoonist, lose his virginity and solve some of the mysteries of adult life. Lessons are imparted by a brutish master-at-arms, an ineffably hip black musician, and a cynical, smart fellow sailor who is a closet homosexual. Most important in his life is Eden Santana, a kind, emotionally bruised older woman with whom Michael falls hopelessly in love. Although Hamill's characters all have a ring of familiarity, and he insists too firmly on giving every one of them a sad secret and a predictable confessional monologue, he invests real passion, narrative energy and fondly remembered detail in this novel, and it pays off. BOMC alternate.

From Library Journal
For Michael Devlin, a middle-aged photographer working on his third divorce, life has never been as good as it was in 1953, the year he joined the Navy, left Brooklyn for the first time, and met the only woman who ever understood him, the mysterious Eden Santana. Now, driving his sports car by the naval base in Pensacola, Florida, Devlin tries to recapture a time when his world view derived entirely from Steve Canyon and Buz Sawyer comic strips. Reexamining simplistic Cold War thinking as a Steve Canyon nightmare is a great fictional premise, and had Hamill pursued it, much of the two-dimensional characterization in this novel might have been justified. As it stands, however, the book is just another maudlin Fifties memoir in which self-realization is synonymous with great sex. Only fans of that overworked genre will enjoy it.

Deserves to be reprinted
By Tom Bruce
I found this book in a used book shop, and being a fan of Hamill's, I bought it. Somewhat semi-autobiographical, the book follows a Brooklyn youth into his induction into the Navy and life at its most raw. The story thrusts one suprise twist on top of another, one exciting episode is immediately replaced by one even more thrilling. And this may be the most erotic book I have ever read. Not quite pornographic, the scenes of lust between two lovers are very descriptive and will stick with the reader for some time. I have read thousands of books, and this has to be in my top ten. Look for it, the search will be highly rewarding.

A fine novel about a young man in the navy stationed ...
By Bruce Kaufman
A fine novel about a young man in the navy stationed in Pensacola, Florida, in the early 1950's. He encounters the good and bad of humanity and everything in between. He also has a great love with a mysterious woman. I have no reason for saying this other than a feeling that the work is in part semi-autobiographical.

The White Man's Indian: Images of the American Indian from Columbus to the Present, by Robert F. Berkhofer

Columbus called them "Indians" because his geography was faulty. But that name and, more importantly, the images it has come to suggest have endured for five centuries, not only obscuring the true identity of the original Americans but serving as an idealogical weapon in their subjugation. Now, in this brilliant and deeply disturbing reinterpretation of the American past, Robert Berkhofer has written an impressively documented account of the self-serving stereotypes Europeans and white Americans have concocted about the "Indian": Noble Savage or bloodthirsty redskin, he was deemed inferior in the light of western, Christian civilization and manipulated to its benefit. A thought-provoking and revelatory study of the absolute, seemingly ineradicable pervasiveness of white racism, The White Man's Indian is a truly important book which penetrates to the very heart of our understanding of ourselves.

"A splendid inquiry into, and analysis of, the process whereby white adventurers and the white middle class fabricated the Indian to their own advantage. It deserves a wide and thoughtful readership."
—Chronicle of Higher Education

"A compelling and definitive history...of racist preconceptions in white behavior toward native Americans."
—Leo Marx, The New York Times Book Review

Deconstructing the So-Called "Indian"
By Elijah Kuan Wong
Robert Berkhofer's "The White Man's Indian" is an invaluable text that compliments the ongoing ethnic studies/post-colonial studies canon excellently. Berkhofer enters the archival images that we as Americans have of The Indian (in its dualistic Good/Bad Native model), to deconstruct it, and to ultimately reveal the historical opportunities and reasons why there was a national production of such images in the first place. In many ways, Berkhoker's "The White Man's Indian" is a perfect companion to Edward Said's seminal text "Orientalism" in that what each aims to do is not to rest on simply recognizing stereotypes ("The Native", "The Oriental"), but to situate The Image in its historical socio-economic context, and to have critiques of The Image lead us deeper into the complexities of national hegemonic (re)productions of power.
Berkhofer does not just repeat ad nauseum, "This is a stereotype", "That is a stereotype", etc. Instead, he looks at how the polarization of peoples into Old World and New World affected whole schools of thought and culture, like Evolutionism, Anthropology, and Christian theories of human genealogy.
I would say that this text is alligned with the growing body of literature and scholarship that comes out of post-colonial critiques of the first-world's narcissistic (and violent) stranglehold on the production of self-aggrandizing myth making. And so, for contributing sorely needed scholarship that counter-pushes against our internalized presuppositions of "The Native" - deriving somewhere between Disney's Pochahontas and Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade - "The White Man's Indian" should be read by anyone who has a stake in resisting neocolonialism - which is to say, everyone.

Paradigm Shifting
By satisfied customer
In The White Man's Indian, Robert Berkhofer takes the idea of "indianness" and traces it's origins throughout the European conquest, rise to dominance of North America and through much of the twentieth century. One of his key contributions is his argument that the term "Indian" was used as a tool of domination. On p. 29 Berkhofer writes, “The Indian was judged by what Whites were not. Change toward what Whites were made him ipso facto less Indian.” Thus, this generalization of a diverse people group aided the Euro-American policy of assimilation. The book also contains a very useful account of how the meaning of "Indian" has changed and been used for different purposes through out the history of the United States.
In all I highly recommend this book as an eye opening look at the destructive power of words and generalizations. It is a must read for anyone interested in ethnohistory, minority studies and I would also argue (though space does not allow me to elaborate) that it is also a must read for anyone interested in environmental history.

A classic in the field. Out of date, but still important.
By Amazon Customer
Bob Berkhofer's White Man's Indian is still such an important work, even decades after it was published. This groundbreaking book established the ways in which a dominant culture invented, shaped, and used the image of the Indian in order to define White values and civilization in contrast to Indian "savagery."

"'the essence of the White image of the Indian has been the definition of Native Americans in fact and fancy as a separate and single other. Whether evaluated as noble or ignoble, whether seen as exotic or downgraded, the Indian as an image was always alien to the White."

From Columbus to Castro: The History of the Caribbean 1492-1969, by Eric Williams

From Columbus to Castro: The History of the Caribbean is about 30 million people scattered across an arc of islands -- Jamaica, Haiti, Barbados, Antigua, Martinique, Trinidad, among others-separated by the languages and cultures of their colonizers, but joined together, nevertheless, by a common heritage. For whether French, English, Dutch, Spanish, Danish, or-latterly-American, the nationality of their masters has made only a notional difference to the peoples of the Caribbean. The history of the Caribbean is dominated by the history of sugar, which is inseparable from the history of slavery; which was inseparable, until recently, from the systematic degradation of labor in the region. Here, for the first time, is a definitive work about a profoundly important but neglected and misrepresented area of the world.

Review
"Mr. Williams is forced to write about so much greed and cruelty that it is remarkable that he keeps his temper and his perspective. He succeeds, and his practical discussion of the current state of the Caribbean is among the best of its kind...He writes better than many historians and almost all politicians."

Great story -difficult to read
By Richard F. Sethre
The story of how Europeans "discovered" the Caribbean, and how they governed it, is a fascinating tale of adventure, greed and cruelty. Unfortunately, this book tells it in an style that is pedantic and often uses archaic terms. Here is a typical sentence.

Whatever the cogitations of Parliament on these nuances of international trade in the eighteenth century, it laid it down decisively, according to an American merchant, in the omnicompetence lauded by Blackstone, "as a fundamental that the Islands were the only useful colonies we had and that the continent was rather a nuisance." (page 223)

If has a lot of data, which you will enjoy if you want to know how many hogsheads, barrels and tierces of sugar were exported from a particular island in a particular year. At times the author provides page after page of this information, which is a bit dry for the non-economist. He also assumes that his reader knows European history in some detail.

It is a tough read at times, but the fascinating story usually wins out over the style and the data. If you scan it and focus on the sections that document the human dramas, especially in regard to slavery, you will probably learn a lot and enjoy it. You many want to keep a dictionary and a historical reference book handy, however.

Truth and Closure.....A Must Read for Everyone!!!!!!!
By Eddie Johnson Jr.
I can not put into words what this journal of the truth has done for me as a African-American Male living in the United States of America. I was introduced to this book by a man of Guyanese decent who knew I needed to read this book. I have to admit it was a difficult read because my primary education only spoke of American History and there was no mentioning of any African-Caribbean contributors from the "Middle Passage" period. Now, at thirty-nine many things are clearer to me. "Roots" and "Beloved" are historic, well-documented treasures and need to be used in educating all children no matter race, creed or color. To make sure what I read had some semblance of truth while in Puerto Rico I visited a sugar mill in Guanica and my heart just melted. If you read the book you will understand my feelings. I became angry because something as simple as not being forthwith with documented history such as this to young minds of American children lead to misunderstandings amongst the masses hailing from Africa, South America, The Caribbean, Asia, United States and Europe. Eric Williams I know I can not thank you in person because you are no longer here physically but your spirit lives on in your books and you will always be alive everytime one more person reads your book and awaken "Thank You"! For everyone else read the book it will cleanse your soul and feed your mind. Once you finish this read "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa" by the same author.

Estee: A Success Story, by Estee Lauder

Like the Empress and Queen who names she bears, Estee Lauder (born Josephine Esther Menzter) reigns supreme with a firm and strong hand. Her rise from unknown to Queen of Cosmetics is told in a lively fashion with her youthful fascination with beauty to her first forays in beauty salons to her acceptance by the major department stores. It seems that through the sheer force of her personality and handful of potions, Estee Lauder would convert even the most stubborn persons to ardent Estee Lauder devotees wether it was in rhe beauty salon, office or evalator. A favorite story is Estee slipping off her heels after an extremely busy sales day at a department store and going over the accounts. Realizing she is two dollars short of her $1000 sales goal and with a few moments before the store officially closes, Estee slips back on her shoes and springs into action, selling enough product to bring her total day's sales to the desired $1000. One shortcoming of the book is Estee Lauder's decision to not give dates of events unless absolutely necessary. We know when Youth Dew is introduced and the official founding of Estee Lauder but otherwise Estee remains mum. She does mention in the introduction to the book the debate over her age but does not settle the matter one way or another. One can understand her desire to be an ageless woman. The image of a cosmetics queen is one of eternal youth and beauty. Her fellow Cosmetic Queen Mary Kay Ash also did a little dance around her true age with her memoirs. For the Estee Lauder devotee or even a student of fashion and cosmetics "Estee: A Success Story" is a must read. ( amazon customer)

How Josephine Esther became the Queen of Cosmetics
By Gwen Chabot Muir
By Vicki Gee
Wonderful book. How could it be anything BUT!!! This book covers where she came from, where she ended up, what motivated her & how she motivated others..WOW. She was an exceptional lady & worked hard for where she went in life. I learned so much & was able to share during the yrs. I worked at the Lauder cosmetic counter. The pictures are beautiful & opened up a whole new vision of who this woman really was. I keep it by my bedside so I remember who I aspire to be like. I just wish someone would make a MOVIE!!

Amazon.com Review
In 1831 French aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville came to the United States to investigate its prison system. America was then a nation of 13 million people populating 24 states, with a largely unsettled territorial claim stretching westward to the Pacific. Seriously distracted from his original mission, the 25-year-old Tocqueville ended up writing about America's people, culture, history, geography, politics, legal system, and economy in ways so insightful and prophetic that today historians, professors, and politicians still consider his work Democracy in America a classic.

"For [Tocqueville] America was both the enticing object and the universal symbol of a New World in the making," writes historian and author Daniel J. Boorstin in his introduction to Volume I. "He was a master at seeing and describing the symbolism. Even more important, he wrote with an uncanny feeling for the grand currents of history and with a wholesome sense of how much and how little we can deflect those currents." This edition, the first in a two-volume set, is the Henry Reeve text, revised by Francis Bowen, and further edited by Phillips Bradley. (Click here for information about Volume II of Democracy in America.) If you've never read Democracy in America, take this opportunity to discover Tocqueville's startlingly astute observations on a democracy in its infancy.

Review
"No better study of a nation's institutions and culture than Tocqueville's Democracy in America has ever been written by a foreign observer; none perhaps as good."
--The New York Times

Praise for the work of Joseph Epstein:

"Epstein is one of the premier contemporary American essayists...What is so remarkable about Epstein as an essay writer is that he'll begin a discussion at some personal place...and end up in another place relevant to us all. He enjoys making language work, not making it jump through hoops for show." --Booklist

"Joseph Epstein is an essayist in the brilliant tradition of Charles Lamb. He moves so effortlessly from the amusingly personal to the broadly philosophical that it takes a moment before you realize how far out into the intellectual cosmos you've been taken."
--Tom Wolfe

"Joseph Epstein's essays no more need his identifying byline than Van Gogh's paintings need his signature. Epstein's style--call it learned whimsy--is unmistakable; for Epstein addicts, indispensable."
--George Will

"Joseph Epstein is the liveliest, most erudite and engaging essayist we have." --James Atlas

"If Epstein's ultimate ancestor is Montaigne, his more immediate master is Mencken. Like Mencken, he has fashioned a style that successfully combines elegance and even bookishness with street-smart colloquial directness. And there is nothing remote or aloof about him."
--John Gross, Chicago Tribune

Tocqueville in flowing English
By Jerry Saperstein
Arthur Goldhammer's translation of Alexis de Tocqueville's classic study of the young United States is - if you'll forgive the word - gorgeous.
To read this is to feel that Tocqueville sits in the room with you. The language is modern and vibrant.
More importantly, the depth of his perception, his understanding of the changes wrought upon his world have never been rendered so clearly. There is no feeling of antiquity to these words: you sense the author's awe and admiration for the American experiment.
It would be a better nation if more thinking people read Tocqueville and I can think of no better translation than this one.

A whole course on political science
By Guillermo Maynez
It has been said that this is the best book about the US and the best book about democracy. Having just read it, I can say it is even more. Tocqueville reflects not only on the US or on democracy, but his comparative approach sheds light on the Europe of his times and before, on the nature of aristocracy and the inevitable democratic revolution which was on its way across the civilized world. Tocqueville was a realistic aristocrat, sometimes nostalgic for the "greatness" of yesterday, but bearing no illusions whatsoever about the feasibility of stopping democratic change. So, he sets to find out what is it about democracy that can work, and what its inherent risks are. And he decides to tour the grandest democratic experiment ever attempted by Man: the United States.
What Tocqueville finds is a unique nation. Unlike most other nascent states in history, the English who moved to America found a huge land, practically devoid of people (and in those cases where it was inhabited, they were easily killed), where everybody could be a landowner. This, plus the particular ethics of the Puritans, the glorifiaction of hard work, thrift and virtuosity, provided for a prosperous, practical people (not necessarily tolerant, especially in religious affairs). Far away from kings and emperors, Americans developed a communal democracy. So far so good, Tocquevill really admires the basic qualities of the US.
But this book is not a long eulogy of democracy. Tocqueville admits democracy is the best way to govern a modern society, but that does not mean he thinks it's perfect or endlessly beneficial. Democracy DOES poses risks: among others, the tyranny of the majority, the mediocrity towards which it impels mores; the loneliness of the individual, lost amidst an endless, faceless crowd.
Even for some minor mistaken attempts at prophecy, Tocqueville's prescience adn long-term vision is simply astonishing. He was right about the merits of democracy; he was right about its shortcomings. If he would come to the present-day US, he would probably find much to celebrate (prosperity, technological progress, widespread access to education, health, etc), and much to deplore, precisely the mediocrity of democratic tastes (think music, literature, cinema, art. etc).
Tocqueville's culture and knowledge are impressive, even more so considering how young he was when he travelled in the US. His style is conversational and straightforward, assertive but modest. The reader will find here a whole lot of wisdom and subjects to think about and it is simply one of the best books on politics and society ever written, one that is relevant todat as it was many years ago.

Captures the sheen of Tocqueville's literary style
By Midwest Book Review
Deftly edited by Olivier Zunz (Commonwealth Professor of History, University of Virginia), Democracy In America 1835-40 presents the classic text written by Alexis de Tocqueville in a new English translation by Arthur Goldhammer that smoothly captures the sheen of Tocqueville's literary style while faithfully rendering the depth and scope of his ideas. Tocqueville was a Frenchman who visited the United States in 1831 for nine months, conducting interviews with more than 200 people on American politics, law, and social practices. His reflections on the "great democratic revolution" transforming the Western world are insightful, inspirational, and continue to offer a timeless depth from a seasoned perspective which has been appreciated by generations of historians, academics and scholars for almost 175 years now.

French writer Isabelle Eberhardt died in 1904 at they age of 27. Like T.E. Lawrence, she had found a home for her complex, sexually ambiguous personality amongst the Arab people in the deserts of North Africa. She lived experimentally, becoming addicted to Kif (hashish) and joining a Sufi sect.

From Publishers Weekly
This captivating biography describes a turn-of-the-century Russian adventurer who was drawn by her romance with Islam to travel throughout north Africa, writing about the lives of the colonial French and local Arabs . Her colorful career ended abruptly in death at the age of 27 in a torrential flash flood that struck a remote hillside garrison in Algeria. Born in 1877 in Geneva, Eberhardt bore the maiden name of her mother, who had left Russia and her elderly husband, a general, five years earlier to go to Switzerland with her children's tutor, an anarchist. Never sure of her identity, Eberhardt embraced a series of disguises as a teenager and afterward, taking a series of male noms de plume and dressing as a man, which eased her way into the tents and Moslem monasteries of the desert. What was not in question was her sexuality, which was decidedly hetero: Eberhardt's fondness for "nights of love" culminated in marriage to an Arab officer in the French colonial cavalry. In this well-researched book, Kobak, a British writer who translated Eberhardt's only published novel, Vagabond , skillfully weaves brief excerpts from her subject's work into her riveting story. Illustrated.

From Library Journal
Born in Geneva in 1877, the illegitimate child of a Russian aristocrat who had left her aged husband in Russia and moved to Geneva with her other children and their tutor, her lover, Eberhardt developed her talent for writing and her obsession with Islamic culture as an adolescent. Following the death of her parents, she began her nomadic travels through North Africa, usually wearing male native dress. Kobak, drawing upon Eberhardt's diaries and correspondence, has written a fascinating biography of this complex woman who was so steeped in Islam, yet was a scandal to French settlers in North Africa for her reputed sexual excesses. The object of an assasination attempt, and the victim of political intrigue among French authorities, Eberhardt persevered until her death in a flash flood at the age of 29. Her prose works have survived; Kobak has vividly reconstructed her life.

Great story, great writing!
By Wildeguy
If you can possibly get your hands on this book you will enjoy it. I was amazed at the endurance of this woman in the most perilous situations. At a time when French and English tourists were scavenging North Africa for art and experience, Isabelle was living the experience. She gives new meaning to the idea that in order to understand art you must live it. Read and enjoy!
