A History of African-American Artists: From 1792 to the Present, by Romare Bearden, Harry Henderson

A landmark work of art history: lavishly illustrated and extraordinary for its thoroughness, A History of African-American Artists -- conceived, researched, and written by the great American artist Romare Bearden with journalist Harry Henderson, who completed the work after Bearden's death in 1988 -- gives a conspectus of African-American art from the late eighteenth century to the present. It examines the lives and careers of more than fifty signal African-American artists, and the relation of their work to prevailing artistic, social, and political trends both in America and throughout the world.

Beginning with a radical reevaluation of the enigma of Joshua Johnston, a late eighteenth-century portrait painter widely assumed by historians to be one of the earliest known African-American artists, Bearden and Henderson go on to examine the careers of Robert S. Duncanson, Edward M. Bannister, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Aaron Douglas, Edmonia Lewis, Jacob Lawrence, Hale A. Woodruff, Augusta Savage, Charles H. Alston, Ellis Wilson, Archibald J. Motley, Jr., Horace Pippin, Alma W. Thomas, and many others.

Illustrated with more than 420 black-and-white illustrations and 61 color reproductions -- including rediscovered classics, works no longer extant, and art never before seen in this country -- A History of African-American Artists is a stunning achievement.

From Library Journal
Himself one of the most prominent modern African American artists, Bearden conceived this landmark volume, treating more than 50 of his predecessors and contemporaries, before his death in 1988. Henderson has ably carried on his mission in a lavishly illustrated book containing 250 black-and-white and 61 color reproductions. Opening in the 18th century with Joshua Johnston, the authors go on to examine the work of Robert S. Duncanson, Henry O. Tanner, Aaron Douglas, Edmonia Lewis, Jacob Lawrence, Auguste Savage, Ellis Wilson, Archibald Motley, Alma Thomas, and others born before 1925. Their lives and careers, which often involved overcoming racial barriers, are portrayed against the backdrop of artistic, social, and political events; black Renaissance and Depression artists receive the most attention. This thoroughly researched conspectus is a solid choice for U.S. art and history collections.

From Booklist
The late Romare Bearden, a premier African American artist in his own right, devoted 15 years to researching and writing this magnificent study of the lives and achievements of 36 significant African American artists born prior to 1925. He and longtime friend and coauthor Henderson were motivated by frustration over the lack of literature on black artists. Through great perseverance and determination, they managed to track down forgotten artwork, piece together vivid biographical portraits, and conduct interviews with surviving artists, who, in spite of their stature and longevity, had never before been interviewed. As Bearden and Henderson set the scene, historically speaking, for such artists as Robert S. Duncanson, Edmonia Lewis, and Henry Ossawa Tanner, they expose the degree to which racism limited opportunities for black artists. The life stories of the artists associated with the Black Renaissance during the 1920s--such as Aaron Douglas; Archibald Motley, the first painter to boldly celebrate urban African American society; and sculptor and influential mentor Augusta Savage--are recorded with consummate insight, as are accounts of the giants of the Depression era, Beauford Delaney and Jacob Lawrence. Richly illustrated and written with resounding empathy and pride, this is a major contribution to the literature on African American history and to the annals of American art. Donna Seaman

nice book
By A Customer
i had a class in college that used this book as a text book. ienjoyed it then, but it wasn't until later that i really had a chanceto sit down and enjoy it. information is good and the pictures are plentiful. this is a very nice book for anyone interested in african american art and culture. another book that i would like to recommend is called souls grown deep: african american vernacular art of the south, volume one. i bought it at an art fair in new york in late january. i'm not sure that it has been released nationally. i've contacted amazon in an attempt to get more info. i have it so i know it is out. this type of book (souls and the history...) are too few and far between.

A Priceless Treasure
By KMWalker
This is quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. As an avid reader, I do not make that claim lightly. What makes this book so remarkable is how Bearden and Henderson both bring the artists to life and give you a deep appreciation for their work.
No other book I've read on the arts has left me similarly breathless. While many of them have been quite competent at explaining things like "Impressionism," "The Renaissance," or "The Harlem Renaissance," none have so beautifully balanced an explanation of the artist and of the artist's work. By bringing the people to life, Bearden and Henderson have brought the art to life. They have made a priceless contribution to our understanding of African-American artists, their work and the challenges they had to overcome to pursue their passion.
This book is a must-have. It will deepen your appreciation of art and of the contributions that African-Americans have made to it.

Art Smart

My nephew checked out a copy of this book from the library when I was helping him with a school project. I loved it right from the start! I ordered a copy of it for my son who is a young artist. My son has a "Ribbons and Bows, Inc" youth art business and was a YesCarolina 2011 Young Entrepreneur of the Year. He will enjoy this book for many years to come!

About the Author
Marcel Proust was born in 1871 in Auteuil, near Paris, France. His seven-volume novel, À la recherche du temps perdu (known in English as In Search of Lost Time), which explores themes of memory, became one of the most famous and influential works of twentieth-century literature. Proust continued to work on the novel until his death in 1922.

The young French lad's guide to successfully making the girl fall in love with you even when you'd rather be in Venice
By Michael Battaglia
By this point, if you've made it this far into the wacky world of one hundred and fifty page scenes of rich French parties, you pretty much have an idea of what you're in for and in theory the remainder of the novel should be smooth sailing. The interesting thing about the last three parts of the novel is that they were published posthumously (if you've ever looked at the novel and thought "This must have taken a lifetime to write", you're not too far off as it turns out) and so it's an open question as to whether this would have been the final form the novels would have taken if Proust had been around to perform all the corrections and deletions his little heart desired ("The Fugitive" section at one point had several different "authoritative editions floating around). Perhaps he never would have finished the novel at all and it would have been published after he died an old man anyway, there's no way to really tell. Fortunately he did actually finish the novel so you're not reading over three thousand pages of convoluted sentences that fail to come to any sort of ending.

Not being a scholar of French literature, I have no idea how definitive these volumes are, or how closely they claim to hew to his original vision, such as it was. Each one of the three volumes that comprise this edition has additional passages as an appendix they were left out, either by Proust or later editors believing that this was what Proust wanted . . . the ambitious could always cut those passages out of the back and paste them in to where they think they should go and see if it enhances the reading experience. But I'm okay with letting actual scholars decide what deserves to be in there since Proust isn't around to give his opinion.

And whether it's just me being used to it or the snazzy job that the editors did, but I found these parts to be the easiest to read of any of them thus far. Maybe it's because they seem to have more of a driving plot, maybe because the swings of emotion are more relatable, maybe all the snarky French nobles had better one-liners. It could also be the giddy high from being in the home stretch. But there's more of a sense of the narrator actually living his life and not wandering about observing snooty party after snooty party, thinking about how maybe he should get around to doing some of that writing thing some day, gosh. The characters seem more defined as well, again, that could just be familiarity after spending more time reading about them than I see my family. But despite the potential patchwork pitfalls of trying to be a psychic and figure out which of Proust's corrections he really meant and were the final ones, in these volumes the themes really come into focus and you can start to see why he spent so much time on what a lot of people may consider the world's most erudite paperweight.

For me it helped that the chunk of the first two parts are focused on his incredibly weird relationship with girlfriend Albertine. When we last left our self-obsessed hero he was convinced that dear Albertine had an eye for the ladies and thus had to marry her to keep her from straying to the ladies. He doesn't get around to marrying her but convinces her to live in his house with him, where he comes up with excuses all the time for her to stay home and not go anywhere, while he spends his time hanging out with her or going off on his own to wallow in misery since because of her he can never go anywhere fun, like Venice. Their relationship, if you want to call it that, remains one of the oddest things I've ever read in literature. She's absolutely agreeable to pretty much anything, seems pleasant and eager to listen, likes hanging around him, while he spends most of his time thinking about how he doesn't love her, which is why he can't break up with her. It drives him to almost hilariously weird obsessions, like interrogating all her friends as to whether she may be a secret lesbian and assuming they're all lying when they tell him that isn't the case, or seizing on any scrap of her even looking at another woman as proof that she loves women, which is why he can't break up with her. When he's with her he obsesses over how much he doesn't really like her and when she's not around he obsesses over what she might be doing and contrives reasons to keep her from going anywhere. The fact that the narrator seems completely oblivious as to how odd this all is makes for some interesting reading, and that's before you even consider how much the fabulously crotchety M. de Charlus adds to the proceedings, with his equally bizarre relationship with a much younger man livening up the proceedings as well (especially an honest to goodness tense scene where some people actively try to turn his lover against him). Along the way there's hint of everyone getting older, as we lose at least one character we started out with, but it all culminates in perhaps the most ridiculous argument a couple could have and an ending that is probably the most logical thing about it.

"The Fugitive" deals with the aftermath of those events, with Albertine off for better pastures, and the narrator alternating between scheming to get her back and glorying in how much better his life is without her. However, his constant ruminating over his memories of an affair with her are surprisingly moving and showcase how Proust could get to the heart of how our memories inform our emotions and vice versa. All of that gets kicked up a notch when it turns out that Albertine definitely isn't coming back and while you have to deal with the narrator venturing boldly down the rabbit hole of questioning every single person she came into contact with if she was a lesbian (and not taking no for an answer) there's a definite sense of grace and elegance to the internal deliberations, trying to sketch out the exact outlines of a loss, seeing where the cracks touch and how that affects not only your life going forward, but how you reflect on what's gone by. It's a poignant dive into the heart of grief and just because it comes from a utterly self-absorbed dilettante doesn't make the honesty any less real.

Meanwhile, every other male character turns out to be gay. The fact that Proust himself appears to have been a closeted homosexual (how closeted and how homosexual seems to be depend on who you ask) may or may not have a bearing on this. It does make for a theme you don't really see coming and while you want to assume the narrator is just projecting his own paranoias on events, after the third or fourth character (gentlemen or lady) turns out to be gay you have to agree that it's really happening.

It all comes together in the last volume, "Time Regained". While it starts out more or less like the other parts do, eventually a sense of finality begins to creep in, with time passing faster and faster in between the paragraphs and you get a sense that he's starting to put together what his whole has been telling him. And just to remind you that you're still reading Proust, a lot of these revelations come within one last massive French party for the rich, as he runs into nearly every character that hasn't yet died and marvels at how old they've gotten and the changes that have occurred in the years that seemed to have passed so quickly. This section winds up being the most memorable simply because of how existentially terrifying it is, having lived with these characters for many, many hours of reading time, to see them suddenly grow old (even if at times the book makes you feel like you're experiencing the events in real-time) is a shock in itself, a reminder that time isn't on your side at all, it's not even on a side so much as the referee and is determined to make sure that none of the calls go your way. It makes the weight of all that's gone before feel like a culmination of sorts and despite the book going meta in its last sections as the narrator decides to write a novel about all he's experienced, it feels like the end of a journey, with the narrator's ponderings reaching a new poignancy and even beauty as he strives to keep everyone he's known alive by describing them fully, even as he seems to admit that time is going to grind down all memory of the book until it's lost entirely. But the suggestion is that it's worth doing anyway.

Is reading three thousand pages of all this worth that conclusion? I think so. I think the attempt is always worth it and while not every sequence is probably essential to the work as a whole, it's that aggregation of events that give it whatever force it has, much like our lives are the additions that we and life contribute to ourselves, and how we deal with the inevitable subtractions. It takes a time that is long enough gone that not a single living person today can describe having lived in it, and make it come alive for us and more than just relating an endless series of genteel parties, it can speak to us about deeper themes, about what we remember and what we carry with us, and what lies beneath memory that we don't realize we carry. It's not for the people who live for the big events in life, that live to study where history is made and the changing course of human events, but for those people who how standing by a certain fence can bring back the memory of the taste of an ice cream cone on a certain hot day, who can remember not only her smile but the dizzy sick elated feeling that came with and the tiny melancholy buzz that couldn't be identified until years later, the notion that a moment can be singular and be forever and be over all too quick, that our lives can be a series of those moments if we learn just how to look, and how we don't get enough of them even if we live to be two hundred.

a super-good, cheap Proust
By Caraculiambro
This is the second volume in a two volume set that contains the entire REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST, unabridged. It's from the U.K., which is why you don't see it for sale much in the U.S. (You can get it no problem on Amazon's U.K. site, though: use ISBN-10: 1840221461 or ISBN-13: 978-1840221466 to find it.)

It's much cheaper than those silver ones that you do see, published by Vintage.

But there's something you should know about the translation. This is the translation by C. K. Scott-Moncrieff and Stephen Hudson (the latter completing the job after the former croaked midway through it). This translation was later reworked by Terence Kilmartin to the approval of many (which translation was in turn reworked by D. J. Enright). That is the translation offered in those silver ones you see everywhere, but IS NOT THE TRANSLATION YOU'RE GETTING HERE from the Wordsworth Editions. This is just the unreworked 1922-1930 job.

It doesn't offer any footnotes or anything else like that.

The entire thing is also available in one volume in French from Amazon here: A LA Recherche Du Temps Perdu (French Edition)

Worthwhile, but be prepared...
By A Customer
I set myself the challenge of reading this monumental work, and am still in the process of slogging through Volume 3, which I hope to finish sometime before death. The book has moments of transcendant beauty and insight that have made it worthwhile, but also some deeply tedious sections that seem to drag on endlessly. My main problem has been the exasperation I feel with Proust himself. It is frankly difficult at times for modern readers to identify with this supremely self-involved aesthete of the early 20th century. Often I just want to reach out and smack him and tell him to quit whining and obsessing and get on with his life, already. Currently, I am dealing with his jealousy and need to control Albertine and her lesbianism, when I have to restrain myself from screaming "Go ahead and break up with her, you dolt!" The minute details of his emotional life spread out over 3,000 plus pages are sometimes overwhelming. On the other hand, I have to admit that he is ruthlessly honest and makes no attempt to render himself in a glowing light, which is admirable. And there are occasionally those deeply profound insights into human nature that strike a chord in everyone, along with a valuable documentation of a time and a life so unlike my own and fascinating in its own way. Take the challenge, and good luck!

From Publishers Weekly
In the 11 stories of "Five Acre Virgin," the narrator describes growing up with her mother and older brother, a petty thief. The 10 entries in "The Travelling Entertainer" illuminate the plight of loners in big cities. "The author trusts readers to look beneath the surface for profound meanings in stories whose ambiguities and implications stir the imagination," wrote PW.

From Library Journal
In these 21 stories, prize-winning Australian author Jolley reveals to us the quiet lives of ordinary people at conflict with their environment, delinquent children, older relatives, marriage partners, and even squatters, as painfully aware of their failures as their dreams. Her characters range from single mothers to traveling salesmen, wood cutters, immigrants, and charwomen, all of whose lives overlap like patchwork quilting. The background to these stories is always Australia, but the conflicts are universal, and they are communicated to us with a sparseness of language that could be Chekov's, with the pleasing gentleness of a Barbara Pym. Review
"A taut, stirring, highly original thriller." --The Philadelphia Inquirer

"Crumley works with fever on the brow, and the most lyrical and true English sentences I've seen lately. Dancing Bear is a wonder of compression, truth and wisdom." --Barry Hannah

"Top-notch . . . an imaginative narrative sense, chaotic and even manic, but violently dramatic . . . excitingly new." --The Los Angeles Times Book Review

"A clear triumph." --The Plain Dealer

"Dancing Bear is a powerful novel by a writer of extraodinary power who mixes humor with blood, environmental issues with cocaine jangles and post-coital blues, the Dancing Bear Wilderness Area of Montana with peppermint schnapps and hopelessness." --The El Paso Herald Post

"Extremely well-written." --The New York Times Book Review

"If you like your detective fiction tough and tenacious you will love James Crumely. . . . No one does it better." --The Houston Chronicle

"James Crumley is a first-rate American writer.... pyrotechnically entertaining, sexy, compassionate." —The Village Voice

From the Inside Flap

Great Gonzo - What a Mystery!
By Brian D. Rubendall
If the great Dr. Hunter S. Thompson ever took to writing detective fiction, this is how it would most likey read. Crumley's P.I. Milo Milodragovitch is back from his best written work, "The Wrong Case." This story is far more violent and drug addled than the previous Milo adventure, and that weakens it somewhat. But its still a hell of a fun ride. Crumley's prose at times remind you of the Dr.'s "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Given that Milo also haunts the West, this is an apt analogy. Overall, this is an exellent hardboiled detective fiction novel that is not for the faint of heart.

Target Practice
By sweetmolly
Crumley hits all the bulls-eyes, but why are we doing this? The characters are etched like diamonds, but I never figured out what or who was directing the dance. "Dancing Bear" is 228 pages long. On page 221, Milodragovitch says "Hell lady, I'm still not real sure what this was all about." Milo's comment made me feel marginally better. How could I be expected to know when the hero didn't?
Milo obtains a break from his security job to take a well paying case from a wealthy elderly lady who seems to want nothing more than to find out what her neighbors are up to. It quickly transpires the "neighbors" are up to deadly games. Milo's new allies are over-interested in his inherited 3,000 acres of prime land, and one is the type of environmentalist we all love to hate. She is the Aquarian kind who has her eyes so firmly fixed on the "big" picture that she neither notices nor cares about the devastation she is wreaking while straining for her goal. Another ally is out to prove no man can ever resist her charms; all she has to do is put her mind to it. And these are his friends! You ought to see the bad guys! Trouble is we never are clued in to exactly what the motivation is for anyone but Milo. He just plain gets sick and tired of everyone trying to knock him off. Very understandable.
"Dancing Bear" is an interesting read because of the well-drawn characters. Crumley zeros in so well on an overweight, hard-as-nails, prostitute; we understand perfectly why Milo finds her an irresistible Red Hot Mama---not an easy task. The pace is fast, but we don't know where we are going, and the master crime/criminal is about as amorphous as having a vague discontent with General Motors. It was not the follow-up I expected to the brilliant "The Wrong Case."

Crumley's Best Novel
By A Customer
A good book has you reading as quicky as possible. But when you finish you wish it would have lasted longer. That's true of this book. It still is after multiple readings.
I've read all his books and still can't tell the difference between Milo and Sughrue. All I know is that both characters have only a marginally superior sense of right and wrong compared to the "bad guys". People who like their heroes clean cut should read Robert Crais' Elvis Cole series.
His later books haven't been as good, but I still read them to keep up on the wanderings of the characters.
If you want a change of pace, read "One to Count Cadence", his first novel.

Explains the fundamentals of the behavioral theory that is based on an integrated view of the personality. For the student and the professional.

From the Back Cover
Until this book, there was no one concise statement of the fundamentals of gestalt therapy. The authors, who are co-directors of the Gestalt Training Center of San Diego, not only explain these principles, but also develop new concepts, reformulate older ones and show, through case studies, how all of these elements come together in the therapeutic meeting.

very good and complete
By Amazon Customer
This book really has what it offers: this is an integrated view of gestalt therapy, but not only that it gives a clear and very well explanation about the main concepts of Gestalt theraphy, I really recomend it.

The writing is dated but the content is good.
By Stewart Kiritz
Erv and Miriam Polster were two major stars in the pantheon of psychotherapy, Gestalt therapy in particular. They were strongly influenced by the ideas of Isadore From and Lore Perls, with whom they studied at the Cleveland Institute of Gestalt Therapy and in New York City. For many years they trained practitioners in the methods of Gestalt therapy through their training center in La Jolla. They also did workshops across the US and abroad. This book is written in the 1970's and shows it, with its somewhat flowerly and gushy style. However it is probably the best book around for someone who wants to know a bit about the theory and practice of this approach first-hand, from two people who really knew what they were doing.

English Class Text Book
By Fathom Two
This book was one of my creative writing text books at Rio Hondo College in 1975. The book is more than a book about rainbows and colors. It is a collection of essays that encourge the reader to look beyond or day to day perceptions and see what others miss. I have really enjoyed going back to several of the essays over the years. You could consider the book a primer to alchemy.

Awesome Book
By Holly Cox
This book was the required reading for a color class that I took at Sac State College in the late '70's. I found that it really opened up my mind to the study of color. This book is the type of book you can open at any time, on any page, and learn facinating facts about color and how it affects our mood and health. Very interesting. At one point, I had lost my orignal book during one of the many moves I made after college. The book was out of print by then and my husband secretly spent 3 years tracking down another copy for me. I have had my 2nd copy for over 15 years now!

a primer for magic and imagenation.

I've had my "original" copy of this book since the year it was published,1975,and 36 years later it still occupies a special space in my vast collection of books dealing with art, science, history and magic. It never fails to inspire me at the many techniques and methods mankind has at looking and thinking "outside" the box of normal thought and perception.
If you like books that inspire and speak to your soul, I highly recommend this most wonderful and obscure work of printed art called THE RAINBOW BOOK!

The Best!
By A Customer
I had been teaching my 4 1/2 year old daughter to read using pure phonics only (Phonics Pathways). Although she could read the words, she wasn't enjoying the process much, and I was afraid of turning her off reading.
After taking the summer off and then buying this book, I made up a number of games from the book. My daughter loves the games and asks to play them all of the time. I can tell that she is learning new words and enjoying the process as well.
I highly recommend this book. It is broken down into sections for teaching different reading skills - phonics, sight words, etc. You can pick and choose from the games to teach the skill that you think needs emphasizing.
This book is well worth the money spent.

Excellent compendium of engaging games to teach reading
By A Customer
Peggy Kaye has produced an excellent resource for truly fun ways to engage a reluctant or struggling reader with games that both child and adult will enjoy. Some involve learning words themselves (labeling with handwritten pieces of paper the parts of the child's body). Others involve training the eye to see detail--eg, "set the table" in which the adult sets a few objects out and the child must replicate the pattern. The games are all simple, require no unusual equipment, and are well described. This has worked well for my children.

a pleasure to learn
By April
We are a homeschooling family with young daughters. My youngest daughter has absolutely no interest in sitting down to learn to read and write. It has always been a struggle with her. At 8yo now, we have begun to get a little (maybe a lot) frustrated with each other and the learning to read and write process. We both inwardly cringe when I pull out the phonics books. However, Peggy Kaye's books: Games for Reading and Games for Writing have been lifesavers!!! These games are ALWAYS fun. My daughter eagerly looks forward to playing any of the games in these books. She will even write difficult spelling words over and over again just because she is in a contest with me! Who knew that competition would be the vehicle to get her interested in reading and writing?

I'm so excited about these books that I would recommend them to absolutely anyone with young readers and writers.

I haven't tried Games for Math, yet I'm sure that book is just as motivating as these books.

My 10yo daughter, who reads and writes exceptionally well for her age, sees us playing these games and requests to get involved as well. Yesterday one of the games had us all in a fit of giggles as we were trying to figure out which of the statements we had written down were truth or lies. Fun! Peggy Kaye is certainly a goddess in our household.

Amazon.com Review
Daniel J. Boorstin, one of America's great historians, focuses on American ingenuity and emergent nationalism in this middle book of the Americans trilogy, dealing with a period extending roughly from the Revolution to the Civil War. Like its two companion volumes, The National Experience is a sometimes quirky look at how certain patterns of living helped shape the character of the United States. The book simply overflows with ideas, all of them introduced in entertaining chapters on subjects such as the New England ice industry and the boomtowns of the Midwest.

Boorstin is a delight to read, a genuine polymath whose wide-ranging interests and love of learning show up on every page. --John J. Miller

Review
"Boorstins achievement is to compel us to see again, ranged in order, the whole mass of attitudes and mechanisms that arise from American difference, and to display his material so abundantly and ingeniously that we see aspects of the nations' past as if for the first time." -- Marcus Cunliffe, Book Week

"This is the history of a nation 'beginning again and again, under men's very eyes. I can only repeat that this is a fine book -- controversial certainly, but a courageous, learned and most exciting work." -- George Dangerfield, The New York Times Book Review

"This exceptionally good book ... abounds in concrete, entertaining details, and in bright, original ideas about those fascinating people, us." -- The New Yorker

A Unique Nation, its Origins and Growth
By Avid Reader
This work is absolutely dazzling, totally unlike any other history you will ever read. It is NOT a boring (or exciting) recount of wars, laws, political battles and big events - it is what future historians will say when they analyze the origin and growth of the United States. Over and over, Boorstin contrasts the Old World (European) with the New, noting the huge differences in purpose and direction and even meaning.

Several themes emerge: First and perhaps foremost, despite the fact that we are a nation of laws we made up a lot of it as we went along. The saving grace - and a point made endlessly - is that ours was never an ideological struggle and to this day Americans, unlike Europeans, are wary of ideology. Not only did we reject the idea of a radical transformation of society, we fought to preserve the status quo, i.e. the ability of the states to rule themselves. Our political parties were non-ideological. We embraced common law - a point that bears repeating over and over. Laws were interpreted for each new situation (based on some basic principles) rather than codified in mind-numbing detail in an attempt to made a final and definitive ruling on every possible case.

Much of the book dealt with the expansion of the country. He points out that the very vagueness of national purpose was an instrument in the great march Westward. Expansion of the nation beyond its original boundaries was not a given by any means and was actively opposed by many of the great minds. But once it started, we established a pattern that was used to introduce state after state. It is noteworthy that our form of government is replicated on the federal, state and city levels. Paradoxically, the power of the states is an asset not a hindrance to national unity. The book is filled with little-known biographies of people who were instrumental in the nation's progress. My grade - A+

Enlightening and enjoyable history
By A Customer
Both this book and its counterpart, The Democratic Experience, offer an anecdotal and entertaining approach to American history. In The National Experience, Boorstin focuses on the development of a national character and national customs. Rather than trying to force history to fit into a deterministic and logical mold, Boorstin shows just how the disconnectedness of American history has contributed to American development.
I find Boorstin's works very readable, and the style enjoyable. My only concern is that sometimes it seems that some complexities are ignored in favor of developing an overall theme. However, this remains one of very few histories I pick up for fun to read a few chapters.

Very good exploration of what makes us Americans
By Kyle G. Brown
In this book Daniel Boorstin puts some distinctly American attitudes into historical perspective as he shows how "Boosterism" -- the tendency to promote your town, region, etc. became a major force in the development of businesses, government and the press during the early 19th century. This theme runs throughout the book, and he deftly uses it to connect a number of otherwise disconnected threads into the rich tapestry of American life. He is equally at ease explaining why every American town, regardless of size, thinks itself a "city" and where our unique federal system of government has its foundation.
