Cloud-hidden, Whereabouts Unknown: A Mountain Journal, by Alan W. Watts

Over the course of nineteen essays, Alan Watts ruminates on the philosophy of nature, ecology, aesthetics, religion, and metaphysics. Assembled in the form of a “mountain journal,” written during a retreat in the foothills of Mount Tamalpais, CA, Cloud-Hidden, Whereabouts Unknown is Watts’s meditation on the art of feeling out and following the watercourse way of nature, known in Chinese as the Tao. Embracing a form of contemplative meditation that allows us to stop analyzing our experiences and start living in to them, the book explores themes such as the natural world, established religion, race relations, karma and reincarnation, astrology and tantric yoga, the nature of ecstasy, and much more.

From the Inside Flap
These ruminations, assembled in the form of a journal and here published in paperback for the first time, were written at Alan Watts' retreat in the foothills of Mount Tamalpais, California. Many current themes are discussed, including meditation, nature, established religion, race relations, karma and reincarnation, astrology and tantric yoga, and the nature of ecstasy, but the underlying motif is the art of feeling out and following the watercourse way of nature, known in Chinese as the Tao. Watts suggests a way of contemplative meditation in which we temporarily stop naming and classifying all that we experience, and simply feel it as it is.

About the Author
Alan W. Watts, who held both a master’s degree in theology and a doctorate of divinity, is best remembered as an interpreter of Zen Buddhism in particular, and of Indian and Chinese philosophy in general. Standing apart, however, from sectarian membership, he has earned the reputation of being one of the most original and “unrutted” philosophers of the twentieth century. Watts was the author of some twenty books on the philosophy and psychology of religion that have been published in many languages throughout the world, including the bestselling The Way of Zen. An avid lecturer, Watts appeared regularly on the radio and hosted the popular television series, Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life,in the 1960s. He died in 1973.

Writing about the Unknowable
By Kris
It's a little hard to write about something that can't be written about, but Watts gives it his best shot, and he seems to pull it off.

He writes, for example, "Yet the intention of the guru himself is simply to exhaust the energy of the illusion by bringing his disciples again and again to experiences of the absurdity of trying to transform mind with mind."

Watts, as his readers know, started as an Anglican (Episcopalian) priest, and then studied at a Zen monastery in Kyoto, Japan. His metamorphosis is evident in these writings (he died in 1973, right after this book was published).

Watts has little sympathy for the established Christian churches and instead finds sustenance in Zen, Taoism, and Hinduism.

Personally, I found sustenance in his writings here. He doesn't give a whole lot of what we might call "practical" advice, except to meditate, but that's the point of his teachings: "So long, then, as we are concerned with powers, we are still aiming at increased control of nature and aggravating our frustrations." The "Western" efforts to control nature, Watts feels, are self-defeating.

"You, as ego, cannot change what you are feeling, and you cannot, effectively, try not to change it."

You may get the dichotomous drift of what he is saying in these few quotations. When you read the book, you'll get much more. Like other books with a spiritual theme, but moreso, this book will fulfill and feed your spirit. Diximus.

My First Love
By Mr. J. H. O'neill
I cannot express the importance this book has had for my life!
years ago, I was a young boy, 15, and had gone to the big city, London, chasing the dream to become a dancer. I was having to support myself. When there some Hippies turned me onto LSD, and the experiences I had were completely life changing.

Later I tried to find books which would help me integrate the psychedelic visions I had experienced, and I tried so many. None really helped. And then in my hometown, I found this book, Cloudhidden Whereabouts Unknown, by Alan Watts, and I knew when I began reading it in the shop it was the book I had been looking for.I was so mesmerized by the beauty and depth of his soul, and the way he uses words, I nearly read the whole book in the shop lol

I have since read it many times, and it has a mythical quality about it. I can see all the marks on its cover from my fingers and nails over the years from that fateful day in a 'Radical Grassroots book shop' in Manchester,, and the meaning of all that.

Why it is so important is that Alan very eloquently manages to communicate the complex (yet simple) insight that so-called 'oppo-sites' are rather, in reality, interrelated dynamic wholes of experience. Hence, for example, you cannot have light without dark. You cannot *know" light unless you know dark also, for how could you recognize it, and the same applies to male and female, life and death, good and bad, and so on. To REALIZE this.

All our patriarchal religions and the institutions that have grown out of that, and also out of the mechanistic paradigm, try and separate seeming opposites, and in doing so create confusion and brutality all round. Remember this culture wages 'war' against the sacred medicines--the entheogens--which when used with the respect they deserve reveal this deeper reality, and then it is up to us to carry on these insights into day to day life with intelligent and loving integration.

NOT understanding the dynamic interrelations of reality creates such awful things as religious Inquisitions, Nazism, and the war on 'terror', and war on 'drugs', etc etc.

I cannot recommend this wondrous healing book enough!

A concise summary of Watts' enlightening lectures.
By A Customer
Unlike "The Book", one of my favorite books of Watts, "Cloud-Hidden..." is a collection of short essays that can be digested in a brief sitting. Some of these essays are direct transcriptions of his lectures. Yet, I find myself returning to this book quite often for a quick "Watts fix".

From Publishers Weekly
Wistful and wise, these travel notes distilled from a long career in diplomatic service and private wanderlust reveal Kennan as a citizen of the world, though one who may be truly at home nowhere. Formerly an ambassador to the U.S.S.R. and to Yugoslavia, the author of The Fateful Alliance and 17 other books here reviles the Soviet system and takes to task the Europeans, who have lost control of their own destiny and are busily destroying their environment. In the U.S., he struggles to reconnect with his Wisconsin and rural Pennsylvania roots; then he hops to southern California, epitome of "childhood without the promise of maturity." Early diary entries fitfully record his bleak stays in Berlin and Moscow in the 1930s and '40s, the devastation of Europe during and after the war. Frequently impersonal, this travelogue is at its best in exquisite word-paintings that capture the spirit and significance of a time and place, whether a Florida key, African grasslands, Fez's maze-like streets, Baghdad, Mexico City, the isle of Capri.

From Library Journal
As always, Kennan offers a unique perspective on history, even in the context of these memoirs. This is a collection of very private reflections spanning some 60 years of foreign service in Nazi Germany, the Baltic states, the Low Countries, the Soviet Union, as well as nonofficial travels covering the entire globe. Kennan has marvelous insight into his ever-changing surroundings--an insight that is always sharp, sometimes melancholy, and punctuated frequently by dry, Midwestern wit. His ardent opposition to the arms race is clear in postwar entries which express a mounting concern for the future of his country and the planet. Along with Kennan's other works, this will form a fitting legacy to one of America's greatest historians.

An Expatriate In Time Rather Than In Place
By Etienne RP
The late George Kennan was known as a diplomat and as a scholar. In Sketches From A Life, published when he was eighty-five years old, he also reveals himself as a writer and as a moralist. The pieces that form this volume are entries into his private diary that were written during a period spanning more than sixty years. They were not intended for publication (the author nonetheless confesses that "every diarist has moments, I am sure, of a vague hope that what he has just written, particularly if he himself is pleased with it, will some day fall under at least a few eyes other than his own." Internet has turned this hope into an instant obsession.)

Although they reveal glimpses into his inner self and contain pages from his personal history, these diary excerpts were expunged from the most intimate entries and are the opposite of a narcissistic account. What they have in common is that they were written, for the most part, only when traveling. They are a collection of sketches, by an author who also was fond of drawing and took graphic sketches of the cities and places he visited. Whether George Kennan could draw well or not is left to the imagination of the reader; but there were few domains in which he didn't excel, and writing was obviously his forte. After all, the man won two Pulitzer and published more than eighteen books.

From Hamburg and Prague to Moscow and St. Petersburg, from Riga to Mexico and Kristiansand to Pennsylvania, Kennan puts to paper beautifully rendered and exquisite prose. His ability to capture the spirit of a city in a few lines puts him among the best of travel writers ; but this lover of nature also had a talent for sketching landscapes and natural sceneries. The streets and buildings that he evokes come to life, sometimes quite literally, as in this prosopopoeia in which the old palace that shelters the American legation in Prague laments "the incorrigible vanity and tragedy and futility of all human endeavors."

Although he first came to Europe in the 1920s and never experienced pre-soviet Russia, Kennan feels much closer to the Russia that was than to the Russia that is. Certain sections of Moscow and Leningrad inspire him such a sense of familiarity "as to evoke the mystery of a former life". He is, as he acknowledges, an "expatriate in time rather than in place", and longs for a Europe that embodied the best of civilization before its plunge into chaos. By contrast, California inspires him his most scathing remarks : the place reminds him "of the popular American Protestant concept of heaven: there is always a reasonable flow of new arrivals; one meets many--not all--of one's friends; people spend a good deal of their time congratulating each other over the fact that they are there; discontent would be unthinkable; and the newcomer is slightly disconcerted to realize that now--the devil having been banished and virtue being triumphant--nothing terribly interesting can ever happen again."

His penchant as a moralist emerged early in his career. One is surprised to find under the pen of a twenty-three years old sentences like the following: "we have too many friends to have any friendships, too many books to know any of them well; and the quality of our impressions gives way to the quantity". It is also ironic that the man who lived to hundred years old remarked, halfway through his life in 1959, "we older people are the guests of this age, permitted to haunt its strange and somewhat terrifying halls--in a way part of its life, like the guests in a summer hotel, yet in a similar way detached from it." Or as he concludes, "each generation staggers through life: occupying briefly the little patch of apparent light between the darkness of the past we have so largely forgotten and the darkness of the future that we cannot see."

Kennan's "Sketches from a Life"
By A reader
"Sketches from a Life" is a series of meditative reflections written by George Kennan during his long career in the foreign service and academia. To an extent the sketches tread ground made familiar to readers of his two volumes of memoirs, but I was impressed by the immediacy and eloquence of these diary-like texts. In many cases, Kennan's writing would be perfectly suited to the novel format.

Kennan's years in Europe and his proximity to the destruction of World War II deepened and confirmed what I suspect was an already ingrained melancholic and pessimistic character. The tone of many of these sketches is therefore quite bleak. There are several haunting scenes set amidst the ruined cities of post-war Europe; in one, Kennan sees a few young Berliners wandering in the wreckage of a bombed-out cathedral as a symbol of "man's lost and purposeless state, his loneliness, his helplessness, his wistfulness, and his inability to understand."

I was also impressed to see Kennan's thoughts on Los Angeles; specifically, his concerns regarding America's growing reliance on the automobile and dependence on oil, which were written with great prescience in 1951.

He had an interesting life, and the book shows it
By Marcos
I guess if you want to write a book on sketches of your life, you've got to have lived an interesting one. And Mr Kennan did.

He lived most of his adult life abroad, mostly in Europe, with a focus in the Eastern part. This allows him to give a nice perspective of life in the Old World versus America. Also, because he lived to be 100, he can give a very good perspective timewise (he wrote the book when he was in his 80s). He comes across as a nostalgic, but it is hard not to be one when one is old, I guess.

One reviewer said that Kennan is the kind of man who owes everything to his position in an organization. It seems to be true. In the book, he is extremely passive and seems to go with the flow. He also seems not to like much interaction with people and shows more emotion about a work of art or a beautiful building than real people. He doesn't even talk much about his wife.

Nevertheless, this does not diminish the pleasure of reading the book, if you prepare yourself to a pleasant tale of distant places, both in space and time. He has been there, he has done that, that's what matters.

Fear in Chile, by Patricia Politzer

First-person accounts of life in Pinochet's Chile—"the perfect epitaph to a violent dictatorship" (Library Journal). "Like a García Márquez novel that has suddenly, horrifyingly, come to real life" (New York Newsday), Fear in Chile is an extraordinary collection of first-person accounts of life under dictatorship. In the 1980s, shortly after Chile emerged from one of the century's most notorious reigns of terror, Chilean journalist Patricia Politzer interviewed figures including a revolutionary activist, a military leader loyal to General Augusto Pinochet, a bank clerk concerned with the status quo, the mother of one of the "disappeared," as well as a dozen other men and women from every political position and social stratum of Chilean life. The result is a broad, vivid, yet nonideological view of modern life under military rule, about which Ariel Dorfman writes, "I can think of no better introduction to my country." With the October 1998 arrest of General Pinochet in Great Britain and renewed world awareness of the horrendous crimes committed during his regime, Fear in Chile, updated with a new afterword by the author that considers the recent attempts to prosecute Pinochet for human-rights violations, offers a vivid portrait of Chile's Pinochet era.

From Library Journal
Through these interviews with both pro-and anti-government Chileans, journalist Politzer conveys the widespread fear that has become endemic in this country. For another account, see Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Clandestine in Chile ( LJ 6/15/87).-- Ed. . She juxtaposes accounts of relentless killings, disappearances, and police brutality with exalting reports of economic prosperity under Pinochet's regime. Macabrely fascinating, this book is a timely release in light of the upcoming Chilean presidential election that was mandated by the 1988 plebiscite. The book may become the perfect epitaph to a violent dictatorship.

Understanding Nancy
By Patricia C. Stendal
This is an inside look at what made Nancy Reagan tick. She certainly was the well-loved wife of her Ronnie, and the feeling was mutual. I feel I understand Nancy much better as a woman and as a First Lady after reading this book. I always wondered why she couldn't warm up a little more to Raisa Gorbachev when it seemed like the whole state of the Cold War depended on it. Her husband and Gorby seemed to hit it off so well. The story reveals that Raisa was a complete bore on any social occasion. She didn't know how to converse politely but turned every opportunity, be it only a small intimate coffee with the First Lady, into a platform to parrot the communist ideology. Nancy wasn't able to handle this. (Interestingly, Barbara Bush, being more of a people person, was able to reach out and make a genuine friend of Raisa.) I was always turned off by Nancy's doll-like figure and obsession with expensive clothes. She makes the point that many of the expensive designer dresses she wore and some of the jewelry were loans or gifts from the designers. Since the First Ladies' clothes are paid for by the President, not the country, Nancy could not understand the criticism she received. The estrangement of the Reagans from their children during the presidency was very sad. Although this distressed Nancy greatly, she did not know how to bridge the gap. Nancy's love and support for her husband was very exemplary, and perhaps he could not have been the president he was without her at his side. My opinion of Nancy was much improved after reading this book.

My Turn - Excellent Read
By sv
This book was extremely well written. It followed the Reagan's life well as I remember it and Nancy always expresses her feelings in a very diplomatic way. I can only say that Nancy led an extremely interesting life with Ronald, with never a boring moment to spare. This is a good read for anyone. I don't think anyone realizes, or has the slightest idea, of how exhausting the first ladies life can be, especially with a second term to fill.

wonderful and poignant stories of people in diverse situations
By John Martin
Many of the reviews of this book focus on the fact that it features both French and English. By contrast I will discuss it as a piece of literature.

Guy de Maupassant, along with Anton Chekov and O. Henry, is widely regarded as the best writer of short stories in modern literature. The Classics Library edition of The Best Short Stories provides ample proof of this judgment. A total of 17 stories are presented including his most famous ones (The Necklace, The Piece of String) and perhaps his best (Boule de Soif). But all of these stories are wonderful. They are full of humor, tragedy, satire, love, disappointment, despair, in short the full range of human emotions and experiences are covered by a talented and perceptive writer.

On of the best aspects of the book is the great diversity in the stories. One theme that Maupassant returns to the brutality of war. But this viciousness is shown by its effects on individuals, not in a massive scale. For example, Two Friends tells of two men who enjoy fishing together. In the story their fishing place is under Prussian control and they are arrested and accused as spies. Madamoiselle Fifi relates how war brings out the worst in men. Boule de Suif shows how "respectable" people react to adversity. Depression, despondency and the negative effects of unrequited love are further themes explored by Maupassant. Two Little Soldiers shows what happens when two friends are split by the love of a woman. Madamoiselle Pearl tells a tale of unrecognized and unreturned love. The Olive Orchard treats of what happens when an early discretion comes back to haunt you. Miss Harriet, perhaps the saddest tale of all, tells of a woman who finds fulfillment in nature and then discovers love only to have it come crashing down on her.

But humor also can be found in these stories. That Pig of a Morin pokes good fun at a shopkeeper who commits a sexual faux pax and as a result becomes the butt of jokes among his friends and neighbors. Madame Hussan's "Rosier" tells what can happen when virtue is rewarded. A Sale is a ribald tale in which a husband tries to sell his wife to another man.

The final story, Happiness, is perhaps the most satisfying. It relates a simple story of a young woman of means who gives up wealth and a life of ease for the love of an ordinary peasant and the joys of their long life together.

All in all, these stories will warm your heart and touch your soul.

Imaginative and "mundane" ,then and now.
By John R. Botifoll
Guy De Maupassant hit a chord and in its delivery he left nothing too far fetched. All of his "stories" were "cloned" from actual everyday common ocurrences. He knew that reality was stranger than fiction, all he had to do was to pass it on, with the well seasoned ingredients of someone that had not ever lived a dull moment. He was from Normandy, my ancestors birthplace in France and I in my puberty gained access to my father's "private library" and the literary works by such an author, using a screwdriver to pick the locks, that is why I had to read the English translations to check on its contents and refresh my memory with those wonderful stories, yet said book is now in the hands of those who's failed to treasure it.

Careful! Two versions on same listing - buy the right one!
By La Seule
This page has information about both an English-only version of the book and a French version with English translations. I ordered the English-only after reading the reviews that were about the French/English version! What a waste.

The French/English version is here:Best Short Stories / Les Meilleurs Contes (A Dual-Language Book) (English and French Edition).

I'm not certain the purpose of putting these two different versions together, but obviously I should have been paying more attention.

Astrology meets ontology
By C. Jones
This book will not make sense to a person who has not studied quite a bit of ontological/metaphysical information and does not have a solid base in astrology. If you have all these things then this book will unfold and connect the dots in ways you cannot imagine. Astrology took on a whole new meaning for me after reading this book. I am thoroughly impressed. Brilliant and rare.

Where do YOU stand?
By Edward D. Weinberger
Imagine, if you will, a modern chemistry course taught by Dante Aligheri, the author of The Divine Comedy, a course in which we might learn what it feels like to be an iron atom chained, as though with leg irons, to nearby atoms by ionic forces in a crystal. Now imagine a history course taught by Pythagoras, the Greek geometer, a course, perhaps, on a previously unknown geometry of statecraft. Finally, suppose that these and other courses are merely offered as preparatory to entrance into a real-life version of the Sarastro's priestly academy in Mozart's Magic Flute.

Collin's Theory of Celestial Influence is clearly meant to be read in this spirit.

No doubt, specialists in chemistry and history would as likely be horrified as entranced by this prospect. Not having a PhD in chemistry, Dante would almost certainly get some of the details, and maybe some of the important ones, wrong. Other specialists, their worldview, not to mention livelihood, threatened, would dismiss such a poetic approach as mere superstition.

But the real strength of the present work is that Collin has anticipated all of this. Collin's response (with his italics) to such people is found on page 333:

...[T]he present book is given as a basis for observation. Plausible or implausible, proven or unproven, all theory will remain theory for the reader until he has established or refuted it for himself on the basis of his own personal observation and experience. For neither belief nor disbelief, conviction or skepticism, can ever substitute for this, the only way in which the thesis of a book can affect real life and actual men.

What happens next, then, is up to you, the reader.

If by chance you wish to awaken
By Robert Stratton
If you wish to bring clarity and meaning to your search then sit and read this thought as well as emotion provoking book. Connects your existence with the universe in a way which creates wonder, awe, meaning, and if you are lucky, purpose. Definitely a tool which enables one to get a different sense of one's self as it did for me. If you also had the same experience, I would love to hear from you. Be advised though, the book and it's content is "not for everybody".

Blasts From the Past
By Pleiades2
This collection gives the reader an overview of the famous Hard-Boiled pulp that made the careers of Hammett; Chandler; Gardner, and a host of other writers of the twenties through forties era.
The Joe Shaw era, mid twenties to mid thirties, featured the classic hard, tough as nails guys that many Depression folks could identify with. The later era, edited first by a woman, then Dime Detective editor Ken White, kept the pages turning for thrill seeking readers. The attitude of the magazine was a tad broader, but fine writers like Woolrich and Constiner kept the level of reader satisfaction high 'til the end.
Writers include, C.J. Daly; N. Davis; F.Nebel; L.Dent; G.H. Coxe, and several others. There's a fine ten page intro by Ruhm, on how this magazine changed detective story reading in the 20th Century, until now.

Hardboiled Detective? You bet!

These are great old Detective stories. The authors are the guys who invented the genre. The nineteen twenties and thirties were a much different place than the one we inhabit. Step right in and feel what it was like to be a gumshoe back then.

This and its predecessor "Nomadic Furniture" (aka Nomadic Furniture 1) are, in my opinion, essential items on the home shelf. Both give a multitude of ideas for furniture, lighting, etc., that is easy to build, portable, eco-conscious (in many instances), and often just plain fun and funky!

Holds up Amazingly well, but also a great blast from the past
By Random Objects
This book is a great slice of life in the 1970's... But many of the ideas inside could be built today and would be incredibly hip.

From Publishers Weekly
The spare, hypnotic dialogue between lovers that Duras has deployed with brilliance elsewhere seems to travesty itself in this disquieting novel. The style is so elliptical as to be obscure, the characters so mannered that they fail to engage our concern. A man and a woman meet at a seaside hotel, where they remain to make love. The man, who wears makeup and kohl around his eyes, is attracted to the woman because her blue eyes and black hair remaind him of a male lover whom he mourns. The woman often covers her face with a black silk scarf. Now and then she slips off to meet another man. The lovers sob frequently, as they discourse on desire and death. The woman, who identifies herself as an actress, writer and teacher, remarks that she and the man are like figments in a book. Once the book is finished, they will be "dissolved." At intervals an italicized passage in the text thrusts their situation into a darkened theater. An "actor" gives stage directions to the man and woman on reading their lines as if this was a drama and the readers were spectators. Aficionados of the French nouveau roman will respond to this slim book with more enthusiasm than the general reader. Renowned as author and screenwriter of Hiroshima mon amour, Duras received the 1986 Ritz Paris Hemingway Award for The Lover.

From Library Journal
He weeps/ she sleeps. This couplet sums up Duras's macabre erotic fantasy played out during late summer at a northern French beach resort. Both bisexuals have black hair, pale skin, and blue eyes, and both are infatuated with a foreigner who shares their physiognomy. For several nights the male hires the female to torment his weeping by her sleeping presence in a bare room where she covers her face with a black silk square. Every evening in present tense recapitulates the immediate past, for, as italicized stage directions intermittently remind us, this novel is really a dialogue designed for a concert reading. Bray's opaque language appropriately transcribes Duras's distance toward the two players. Marilyn Gaddis Rose, SUNY at Binghamton

Tainted Love to the Max
By A Customer
An encounter in a cafe brings a man and woman together who are both obsessed with a blue eyed, black haired man.
Each filling a need the other has without touching, yet, "Blue Eyes,Black Hair" is so erotic in it's content that it is indecent, tainted, disturbing.
At times it was difficult to absorb and I wanted to close the book, but the writing and style was so unusual that I was intrigued and outraged at the same time.
Duras gives the reader an atmosphere of darkness, weeping, lonliness, and death.
The woman wears black silk over her face... a metaphor for shame...feelings of loss, hiding what she truly is or is not.
- He walks around the white sheets and along the walls. He asks her not to sleep, to remain naked and without the black silk. He walks around her body- ...from Blue Eyes, Black Hair...
This image reminded me of a dog circling his prey, not knowing whether to kill it, play with it, or eat it. The man does all of this.
Obsession is a sickness. Duras sets the tone. A room where the man and woman meet to weep, sleep, wrapping themselves in black silk and white sheets. Two people who are lost...obsessed with one another's obsession. Until finally...the obsession becomes one and the man and woman become the same person.
Note...This is my second book by Duras. I must admit, I've never read an author like her before. The imagery is so strong that she can use less words. I feel as if I have been inside the room myself and I don't like it!

For Duras Sophisticates
By IsolaBlue
Blue Eyes, Black Hair might not be recommended for a first-time reader of Duras. The book is not flowing or visual or erotic in the manner of The Lover. It seems more a continuation of Duras' literary themes rather than a novel that stands by itself. It might be of more interest to devotees of Duras' greater body of work than to the casual reader. In it, a man sees another man, briefly, through a window, and feels an attraction as strong as love. Weeping in a cafe, later the same night, he meets a young woman with black hair and blue eyes who reminds him very much of the man he saw and desired but never met. The two acknowledge to one another that they are both lonely, and the man asks the woman to go with him to his room by the sea. He wants to watch her sleep. The novel is basically a story of the transferal of desire and the lack of communion between two individuals. The book explores the idea of objectifying a love, of two people wanting things so different that their desires somehow become similar, and of feelings involved in close emotional relationships between people of different sexual orientations. It addresses the themes of loneliness, the exploration of desire and despair, of distance and fear, and of the pain in never really knowing - emotionally or physically - the desired other.

Entrancing, dark and pensive. How French.
By jafrank
What a weird, entrancing little book. Duras writes about a messed up love affair using these short, elliptical, almost hypnotic paragraphs. Everything seems to loop and feedback into itself, love becomes memory, becomes desire, becomes obsession, becomes death, etc. It's a weirdly visual book, you can almost see how a moody, black and white film version of this would work would unfold through itself. Duras has a gorgeous, brooding pensiveness all her own.

Excellent Reality Check - Not "Anti-US" at all
By Traveler
Otto Bettmann's "The Good Old Days - They Were Terrible!" is really kick to the head in terms of establishing reality with folks who think everything was so much better and more simple in the "good old days."
Filled with interesting graphics and drawings, this book covers all the bases from food safety to crime to public education. Barely a sacred cow is left untouched.
I've owned this book for more than ten years and it never fails to catch my interest when I pick it up again. I've also shown it to many of my friends and even given it as a gift.
As for this notion of "anti-US," this seems a bit simplistic. The author's intention seems pretty clear - to establish 19th century America as a pretty dangerous place to live. There are few, if any, comparisons to Europe. It's not intended to be a book about how "bad the US is compared to country X." No, this is about just telling it like it is (or rather, was). Being honest about our past does us no harm. Indeed, it allows us to be become even better in the future. It's called learning from your mistakes. And Bettman's book is an excellent place to start learning.

I remember back in the good ole days........
By Carlos G. Diaz
As a student many of my friends were required to read this book for History class, I myself enjoyed the book so much I bought a copy to keep even though I didn't take the class. Much of the book focuses on letting readers understand what society was like over a hundred years ago and how things we complain about today were just as much a problem in the past. The book features chapters on immigration, health, food, medical care and many other issues of the day.
Many of the chapters will make you cringe as you learn that horses created much more pollution then cars ever did or that meat packing companies often used diseased or sickly cows and pigs. The chapters on education bring light to modern viewers that delinquency and school violence were not unknown and in one instance a young teacher was killed by her on students.
The book features wonderfully drawn illustartions that bring life to the world of our grandparents and how we should be glad to have clean roads, safe food and laws to protect consumers from fraud and deceit. A great book that all students should read and enjoy

Owning This Book Is Like Owning Your Own Time Machine
By Joseph L Burke
I am addicted to stories about time travel and I have a collection of them. This book is wonderful in that, instead of sentimental twaddle, conjecture, and picturesque rose-colored-glasses stories of the past, you really get to know what times were like in "The Good Old Days' - and - you'll thank your lucky stars that you are living now and not then. I was fascinated and horrified at the details of everyday life a century ago. I don't know how the people of that era survived and I now know why a lot of them didn't. A real eye-opener!!

ALWAYS INTERESTING!
By G. M. C.
OK, so he is egotistical. That doesn't change the fact that his life makes for really interesting reading - in fact, he is an amazing man, whether you like him or not. This book is about "surviving at the top" and he should know! He wouldn't have gotten to where he is, if he did'nt know how to survive.
I love any books on Trump - they are always interesting and easy to read, because he just tells it like it is.

Good insight
By dasn0wman
Who knows more about Trump than Trump himself? This is a good book if you want to know more about Trump. At times he is sincere; like when he tells of the various disadvantaged people he has helped. At times he sounds really fake; he mentions how he admires the courage of gamblers. That is alot of boloney. At times he is boastful; the Trump Princess is the best yacht ever built. But hate him or love him, he says it like it is. He seems very vindictive as evident with his numerous attacks on some very famous people throughout the book. But for those who are his friends, he has nothing but praise for them. He doesn't play politics, but what he does do is make deals and makes a whole bunch of them in this book. One of the recurring themes of the book is to wait for the right price even if it means giving it up and not to let emotions dictate the price. In many instances, the deal comes back to him and at an even better price than ever.

Vastly inferior to the Art of the Deal
By TW
For those seeking a noteworthy sequel to the Art of the Deal (a book I rated very high), you will be sorely disappointed. This book contains none of the charm or the excitement behind the building of Donald's empire. Instead, in Surviving at the Top, we are merely given a plain account of Trump's dealings since the time of his first book. The information is written in a manner that is not any more articulate than one might find on Wikipedia.

I give this book two stars instead of one because it does contain some information that would not be available had Donald not decided to put it in print; thus those with a deep interest in Trump will find some value. I personally just could not get past the fact that Donald put together this book as a quick narrative of events to cash in on his last book success rather than provide a quality piece of work on the level of the Art of the Deal.
