Fulghum, a retired Unitarian minister, does not express uncommon thoughts here: his thoughts are those we all wish were true. The book's tone is set by the title piece, in which the author sets out his credo, ranging from "share everything" to "hold hands and stick together." He goes on to relate stories of a courageous and loving Russian soldier and Mother Teresa. This is an uplifting, often humorous look at life in general from Robert's perspective. It reminds me of the Chicken Soup books. The chapters are pretty much stand alone so it is a book a person can leave and return to at any time. I have enjoyed all of Robert Fulghum's books -- All I Really Need to Know.... was the first one I read. Great read with parts you may never forget from a perspective you may never have considered.

A classic - A firm foundation for life

A must have - a cassette tape one will benefit from by listening to it every day for the next few months. Listen to it at times when your hands are busy but your mind is not - driving, and doing work around the house are perfect times. Then, listen to it again at least once every month for the rest of your life. Please, please play this for your young children to give them a firm foundation for life.

This is a great book full of simple truths that we, as adults forget. Makes life seem so simple if we just follow the rules we are taught as children. This is one of those books you will read and reread. Funny and insightful. You can read in sections or in one sit down. Love this book.

A thorough introduction, but hard to swallow

This was my first book on go. There's no question that it has all the information anyone could ever need to get started playing what I consider the greatest game in the world. However, for most Westerners, the material is very difficult to digest. I believe there are a couple of reasons for this: first, remember that this is one of the top players of the last century, writing a book for beginners. He's lost some of the appreciation for the hefty learning curve the game imposes on the uninitiated. It can be discouraging when he tells you how "easy" some of this stuff is (which, of course, is true once you understand it, but not at first). Second, as some have noted, the book is "concise." I might go a step further and call it "dense." I like this quality in books I read now (as a better player), but as a beginner, it was tough. Third, Iwamoto takes a bottom-up approach, which probably works for some, but left me missing the forest for the trees. A section typically begins with an example (board diagram), and says "In this situation, White needs to play at X, or Black will capture three stones at Y." The principles behind the examples tend to be glossed over, and without a background in the game, I had no idea how to generalize.
Eventually, I did in fact absorb all this material, even without a mentor to help my play along. With the benefit of hindsight, however, I find Janice Kim's "Learn To Play Go" series much, much easier to digest at the beginner level. True, Iwamoto covers in one book what Kim covers in four, but the first two suffice to get you rolling without banging your head against the wall (important if we're going to spread the GOspel throughout the West).

best available introduction

I am only a beginning Go player, but I have ransacked the bookstore shelves for a solid introduction to the game, and this work is by far the best.
Part I provides an amazingly clear explanation of the rules. Part II explains the basic strategy and tactics necessary to play an opponent and understand what you are doing. The only serious alternative, Janice Kim's series of volumes, moves at a snail's pace ideal for people unused to playing other strategy games (for example, chess). Although Kaoru Iwamoto wrote this book in the 1970's, it has the look and feel of a work written in the 1990's. You will be captivated and inspired to pursue the game further.
Incidentally, beginners in search of Go opponents should take advantage of the free real-time services on the Internet. You can watch games between world-class players or challenge any of hundreds of ranked opponents. Along with buying this book, I recommend visiting IGS Panda Net, registering yourself, and downloading gGo and GNU Go.

A Superb Intro to the World�s Oldest Game - David Bronczyk

Since learning the essentials of Go in 1978, I've read two exceptional books for beginners: this one by Iwamoto, and "Go: A Guide to the Game" by D.B. Pritchard (an out-of-print book published by Stackpole Books in 1973). Both books give the neophyte a glimpse into the game's unmatched strategic and tactical subtlety - far greater than that of chess - and its storied past, and both build a solid foundation for developing true mastery. Iwamoto's scheme of organization is excellent, and the sequencing of the basic elements is very logical. I needed several readings in order to digest all the densely packed concepts and examples, but I persisted, reminding myself that it would be unrealistic to expect easy and early prowess in such a deceptively simple "children's" game. I would recommend that a would-be Go player read this book while playing (i.e., freely experimenting and improvising) with computer Go - David Fotland's "The Many Faces of Go" is an outstanding and user-friendly software package.

In Evil Sisters Bram Dijkstra, a professor of comparative literature at the University of California, San Diego, has taken on the task of detailing the various threats female sexuality is said to have posed throughout this century. Dijkstra (Idols of Perversity: Fantasies of Feminine Evil in Fin-de-Siecle Culture, Oxford Univ., 1986) provides another scholarly work that reveals the historical basis for gender and race imagery and conflict in modern culture, especially in film and television. Here he explores the medical, psychological, anthropological, and sociological theories prominent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that promoted distorted ideas of sex, gender, and race (still reflected and reinforced in popular culture today). The author focuses on the early biological theories that led to the image of sexual women as vampires or as "biological terrorists out to deplete the creative energies of every civilized male." Dijkstra also explores how views of the deadly nature of female sexuality significantly influenced racist thinking and Hitler's politics of genocide. This fascinating book explores some shadowy aspects of early 20th Century American cultural history...pop Nietzscheism and pop Darwinism combined to make a hideous blend of racism, eugenics, sexism, and very strange biological pseudosciences...this dark part of our intellectual heritage was ignored and forgotten after we saw that it led to Hitler and genocide...to learn about it is to fortify ourselves against its contemporary permutations.

deliberate digression

Here is a book which can best be characterized as an inspired failure. That is no insult: academic literature is rife with works that either don't prove what they set out to prove and thus provoke indipensable rebuttals, or which set out to prove the obvious, and prove it to nobody's startlement or particular satisfaction, but, although their conclusions are unexciting, contrive to retain their currency by virtue of their usefulness as info-mines. Had Casaubon's _Key To All Mythologies_ been published, it might have been of the second type. (_Evil Sisters_ belongs to both categories.) Inspired academic failures are often nifty and in my opinion they are even necessary, since academic life depends on discourse and, in order to maintain discourse, someone always has to take the losing position. Henry Petroski writes books on the importance of failure in design; well, failure is no more expendable in discourse than in design; Dijkstra in _Evil Sisters_ proves as much, intentionally or not.
Dijkstra's main contention, that racist and sexist books, pictures, and films led to the Nazification of Europe, is hooey. Sure, the books, films, and pictures existed, and sure the conquest of Europe by Nazi Germany took place, but that doesn't prove that the one LED TO the other. Events may demonstrably correlate statistically without correlating causally--as I learned in High School Social Studies. If racist pictures and literature abound, and if the Nazification of a continent occurs, isn't it at least as likely that both phenomena are due to some antecedent cause as that one phenomenon impels the other? Sure it is, as high school kids flunk Social Studies tests for failing to realize.
Dijkstra's minor contention, that specific strains of antifeminism, anti-Semitism, and race-baiting were ubiquitous throughout the Western world around the turn of the century and up till World War II, is correct, but it's so indisputably correct that Dijkstra, never a fellow to let a blind alley go unexplored, experiences difficulty choosing among his sources. So much so that one is left wondering why Dijkstra should choose to pick on only certain people: why should he scold Fitzgerald and Hemingway for their unacceptable racial and sexual assumptions when London and Cather beckon as temptingly? Could it be because Fitzgerald and Hemingway are bigger literary game and consequently more fun to bag?
Pretty much anything pop-cultural published around 1909 would be castigated as racist/sexist by today's standards; and, as per usual, the stereotypes perpetuated in the pulps found themselves echoed ("archetypally") in the pages of reputable writers. Dijkstra is spot-on in his observation that the basic difference between a stereotype and an archetype inheres in the reputability of the artist who invokes it. Hence, Al Jolson in "The Jazz Singer" has come to be an embarrassment while Willa Cather's blind, instinctually musical, perpetually nodding "small-brained" mulatto pianist in _My Antonia_ is still Art. Unfortunately Dijkstra is not content to make this thouroughly accurate observation only once: he makes it again and again and really, it's too self-evident to need that much repetition.
Again, Dijkstra errs, as I see it, when he attributes to the ubiquitous race-baiting of the early Twentieth century a nasty triumphalism which I don't believe it possessed. The lessons of High School and of the playground are always at hand: secure people do not taunt their neighbors. Still less do they taunt neighbors in relation to whom they believe they are one-up. The people who really run this country, still more this world, "have better things to do than be anti-Semitic" or racist, however devastating their policies may be to given out-groups. The "rasping protofascist tone" of early Twentieth-century literature was always most raucous and most inescapable in the pop-cult pulps, and it trickled UP to the comparatively rarified realms of "high culture" from there. Don't get me wrong, I realize that racism was respectable at the turn of the century even in America, and that it kept right on being respectable until the abhorrent sight of Nazi Germany caused the nations of this world to take stock of themselves. What I DON'T believe is that the currency racial/sexual Theories of Everything gained in the Western world at that time was due to Caucasian self-confidence. Quite the opposite. I believe it was contingent upon a great loss of faith. Nietzsche proclaimed that God was dead and and forthwith, though with his tongue in his cheek, proposed Das Volk as a substitute for the Divinity, part-Slavic as he was. What could be more inevitable that that he be followed by disciples who were just as insecure as he was but not as smart, who were dead to irony, and whose toungues were most emphatically NOT in their cheeks? Dijkstra holds Darwin reponsible for a great many things, and of some of these things, in my view, Darwin is innocent. But in one respect Dijkstra is right--Darwin had a profound decentering effect on Western philosophers and pulp writers alike. He was the sensei roshi who taught them that they could no longer believe themselves to be the particualar favorites of God. (As such, he was really only the carrier for Spinoza's bad news, but then nobody ever reads philosophers; natural historians get a lot more airplay.) What could be more natural than that people, deprived of a consoling vision of themselves as favorites of God, should bend every sinew to prove themselves favorites of Nature instead?
This self-proof was a burden that devolved heavily upon the shoulders of Twentieth-century people, which their Nineteenth-century forbears did not wholly share. Nineteenth-century Westerners could most of them still depend upon the love of God, a love which might conceivably be lavished more unstintingly upon some groups than others but which was theoretically illimitable and free to all. Christianity had not yet become--let's not follow Nietzsche and say "dead" but UNFASHIONABLE. Consequently strains of racism and sexism existed in Nineteenth-century popular culture but Nineteenth-century popular culture did not CONSIST of them. Early Twentieth-century popular culture almost did. Dijkstra's previous and far superior book, _Idols of Perversity_, was dedicated to mapping the change. _Idols of Perversity_ is much more interesting than _Evil Sisters_ because it chronicles a FIGHT between ideas, and explores the consequences of the resulting strain in the Nineteenth-century mind. _Evil Sisters_ is comparatively uninteresting because it all takes place after the fact, after the bad guys won.
Still, I'm willing to give Dijkstra an A for Agitation and for Attitude. I like Attitude. Too many academic works are unavailable to the public because they are written in a dull untranslatable jargon seemingly designed to keep readers at bay. Sure, Dijlstra employs jargon, but at least it's his OWN jargon. And why shouldn't one SOUND passionate about those issues concerning which one IS passionate? As for Dijkstra's digressivity: I, too, believe in leaving no stone unturned. I wish merely to suggest that, in the interests of those readers who are interested in getting to the POINT, already, this book could have been cut down by about a third. And some of Dijkstra's verbal formulations are genuinely bizarre. While discussing the Louise Brooks vehicle "Pandora's Box", he writes as follows: "As Lola's blood seeps into the dried boards of civilization..." The dried boards of civilization? Give me a break.

Not nearly as good as -Idols of Perversity_

I was mightily entertained by his previous book, -Idols of Perversity-, and had high hopes for this one, which seems much less interesting.
-Idols- introduces us to the images of a number of fascinating academic and Symbolist artists of the 19th century, and makes them interesting by roundly condemning them for various sins against political correctness.
This book tries to do the same; unfortunately, he covers more familiar territory, and deals with works that are far more familiar. Dijkstra's judgmentalism adds spice to the obscure, but to familiar masterpieces it seems like vandalism.
It is not new or insightful to point out, say, that Hemingway was mighty interested in Real Manliness; or that Faulkner had peculiar notions about hereditary degeneration. Mr. Dijkstra does a good job at connecting these features of these works to half-forgotten ideas like Lombroso's physiognomy; but the overall effect is far less striking. Those who want to read Hemingway or Faulkner will not find their interest whetted by the diatribe against their sins against political correctness. Unlike nineteenth century paintings, these familiar books stand on their own.

Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-89) gained his greatest fame when a retrospective of his works led to obscenity charges against Cincinnati's Contemporary Arts Center. But even while he defied the art world with graphic photographs revealing his deepest sexual fantasies, Mapplethorpe was acclaimed for his celebrity portraits and flower images. Six months before his death from AIDS, the highly controversial photographer selected Morrisroe, a feature writer for New York and the New York Times, among other publications, to document his life. Whereas Jack Fritscher's candid memoir, Mapplethorpe: Assault with a Deadly Camera (LJ 10/1/94), is largely drawn from personal reminiscence and is more narrowly focused, Morrisroe's compelling work is based on interviews with Mapplethorpe himself as well as hundreds of family members, lovers, and colleagues. Morrisroe provides intimate, often painful, details of his rigid Catholic upbringing, the sexual obsessions that drove him to the the gay S-M scene, and his intense relationships with rock singer Patti Smith and aristocratic lover Sam Wagstaff. How did a middle-class Catholic boy from Queens become one of the world's most controversial artists? Morrisroe, who met Mapplethorpe at the pinnacle of his fame and the beginning of his rapid descent toward death from AIDS, provides as cogent an explanation as possible in an excellent biography notable for its dramatic structure and candor. Morrisroe tracks Mapplethorpe's brief and excessive life from his awkward boyhood, through his miasmic college and ROTC years, to his abrupt sexual and artistic liberation when he discovered drugs and gay S & M bars, habits he overindulged in right up to his death at age 43. Mapplethorpe's story is tied inextricably to the life story of his closest friend, sometime lover, and most important muse, Patti Smith, who Morrisroe also portrays with skill and ardor. Morrisroe does a superb job of conjuring the New York art and club scene during the 1970s and 1980s and of tracing the evolution of Mapplethorpe's troubling art. A photographer perversely proud of his lack of technical knowledge, Mapplethorpe had a brilliant but cold eye and ruthlessly objectified his sex partners and models. The truth is, Mapplethorpe was fixated on transgression, sadism, evil, and death. Incapable of love, he used and abused people, including himself. A talented narcissistic photographer.

Mapplethorpe A Biography is an absorbing book but having read recently Sam Wagstaff Before and After Mapplethorpe there is a good bit of redundancy. You will experience Mapplethorpe from his early years in Floral Park until is young death from AIDS in Manhattan. I finished the book not liking Mapplethorpe who was too self absorbed, narcissistic, self referential and simply a greedy self interested pain in the ass. Nonetheless I am glad I read the book.

With the commercial success of You're Only Old Once, Random House offers a commemorative edition of another adult work of humor by the venerable children's book author. Originally published in 1939, this revisionist farce attempts to rectify the "shameful" story of "a big blond nude trotting around the town on a horse" and Peeping Tom, the "illicit snooper." The frothy, historical romp presents seven Lady Godivas (Ladies Godiva?) whose father, the Lord of Coventry, is thrown from a horse and killed. The noble daughters vow to postpone their marriages to the seven Peeping brothers until they discover "some new and worthy Horse Truth, of benefit to man." This gives Seuss the opportunity to contrive the origins of such wisdoms as, "Don't put the cart before the horse." Seuss's only prose work (according to promotional material) lacks the sparkle of his children's verse, his women aren't as interesting as the real Lady G.an 11th century maverick who sacrificed her modesty to force her husband to lower taxesand readers will wonder why the protagonists (who bear unsettling resemblances to children in later Seuss works) are unclothed. An Early Dr. Seuss Gem

"A beautiful story of love, honor and scientific achievement" is how Dr. Seuss, with tongue in cheek, describes this book. Touted as Dr. Seuss's first book for adults, The Seven Lady Godivas was originally published in 1939 and reissued in 1987. It tells the story of not one, but seven 11th Century Lady Godivas. They are sisters sworn not to marry their beaus, the seven Peeping brothers (yes, Tom is one of them) until each of them discover a scientific truth about horses. They were driven to this oath by the death of their father during an experiment using a horse as a means of transportation.
The history is confused, but the fun never stops. Dr. Seuss's full page drawings (in red, black and white) illustrate every other page. The end papers are a fanciful illustration of the Godiva family tree. The text, though wordier than his childrens books and not in rhyme, is thoroughly Dr. Seuss. He explains the seven sisters preference for nudity by saying they had brains and were not given to vanity. He goes on to say "they were simply themselves and chose not to disguise it." Although this is a great summation of nudist philosophy, it doesn't say much about his regard for women who choose to wear clothes. Instead of scientific truths we are treated by the author to fanciful origins for seven proverbs about horses as each sister discovers her "horse truth" and goes on to marry her boyfriend.
If you enjoy Dr. Seuss, you will find these drawings and this story delightful. Although described as an adult book, children will enjoy the story as well. Today's young folks may not be familiar with all seven of the horse proverbs that Dr. Seuss relates in a book that is over 60 years old, but it should not deter from their enjoyment of this amusing tale. The drawings are not detailed enough to offend even the youngest of readers.

A rich and wide-ranging collection

This cookbook celebrates the culinary diversity of the Middle East with a wealth of traditional recipes from many countries. The author's enthusiasm for the dishes she describes is evident throughout, and the recipes span the spectrum from everyday meals to more elaborate preparations for holidays and special occasions. Most of the ingredients are readily available, and the food is nutritious, flavorful, and economical. Whether you are an experienced cook or only a beginner, this book has something for you.

A classic survey of a culinary mosaic

Ms. Roden casts a wide net and captures many a treasure in this indispensible survey of the many foodways and cultures of the Middle East. If all you know of Middle Eastern cookery is pita bread and fallafel, get your hands on this book ASAP! Recipes from cultures as diverse as Persia, Turkey and Morroco are included with many delectables from Ms. Roden's hometown of Cairo, along with culinary insights from the great Arab food writer of the 13th century, Al-Baghdadi. All the recipes are put together in an easy to follow format, with good information on ingredients (though it does appear that she was writing for a British rather than American audience, so some of the terminology may not be immeadiately familiar to readers in the U.S.). Sometimes I think that the book would benefit from photos of some of the finished dishes, but other than that this is a superb introduction to Middel Eastern cookery. Enjoy!

Novel by Andre Gide, published in French in 1926 as Les Faux-Monnayeurs. Constructed with a greater range and scope than his previous short fiction, The Counterfeiters is Gide's most complex and intricately plotted work. It is a novel within a novel, concerning the relatives and teachers of a group of schoolboys who are subjected to corrupting influences both in and out of the classroom. In a progression of unconnected scenes and events, the novel approximates the texture of daily life. Schoolboys of diverse ages and dispositions attend the Pension Azais. Some are suspected of having attempted to circulate counterfeit coins. Edouard, an author writing a novel entitled The Counterfeiters, observes that if a counterfeit coin is thought to be authentic, it is accepted as valuable; if it is found to be counterfeit, it is perceived as worthless. Therefore, he concludes, value is wholly a matter of perception and has nothing to do with reality. The counterfeiters are thus representative of those who disguise themselves with false personalities, either in unconscious self-deception or through conscious, hypocritical conformity to convention. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

A brilliant, lyrical masterpiece.

"The Counterfeiters" (1926), by Andre Gide (1869-1951) is a fascinating chronicle of life in Paris before World War I. It begins as two high school friends, Bernard Profitendieu and Olivier Molinier, prepare for the bacchalaureat, their final exam. Bernard finds some letters hidden at home which show he is illegitimate, and runs away from home, thus setting in motion a rich set of adventures among a cast of mind-boggling proportions. From Bernard, Olivier and their parents, the story quickly grows to include Olivier's younger brother George, his uncle Edouard, Edouard's friend Laura, Olivier's older brother Vincent, Vincent's friend Robert Count Passavant, Passavant's lover Lady Griffith, Edouard's old schoolmate Victor Strouvilhou, Victor's nephew Gheri, Laura's father Vedel, Edouard's old piano teacher Perouse, and Perouse's grandson Boris, among many others. As this prodigious cast assembles itself, the fireworks really begin!
The reader will be amazed by all the ways these characters interconnect with each other. For example, at the beginning of the book, Edouard is traveling from London to Paris to visit and advise Laura, who is trying to extricate herself from an extra-marital affair, but only upon arriving will he learn Laura's paramour is actually his nephew Vincent. Many similar connections between most of the characters will be revealed during the course of this motivating story. "The Counterfeiters" is less a plotted novel than a finely-woven tapestry. Every character interacts with almost every other. The chapters are brief, only a dozen pages or so, but most focus on one of these interactions in particular, making for a compelling narrative. It was notably experimental for its time, but extremely readable, and still fresh today.
The title describes a counterfeiting ring which uses children, like something from Dickens's "Oliver Twist", to pass off gold-plated glass disks for coins. Gide's broader theme, however, is that of falsehood in general, like that popular theme of 19th-century French literature, namely hypocrisy. Beside the counterfeiting ring itself, Gide describes fathers with illegitimate children, adults with hidden affairs, and people generally searching for truth among the artifice of life.
Gide's characters are brilliantly conceived, executed on a par with his predecessor Balzac, whom Gide himself called "possibly our greatest novelist" (as published in the invaluable reference in the appendix of this book, the illuminating journal Gide himself kept while writing "The Counterfeiters"). There is something of Balzac's Goriot in Gide's Perouse, something of Rastignac in Bernard, and perhaps even a little Vautrin in Passavant. But Gide's literary style is markedly different. Where Balzac told self-contained stories, usually ones with social morals attached (as did most 19th-century French authors), Gide tells us he is "fond of sudden endings," and "it is an insult to explain what the attentive reader has understood" (both also paraphrased from this book's appendix).
Gide weaves dozens of strands of the story, intersecting every character with every other character, drawing lines to question the moral behavior of each interaction, an experimental gambit for its time. But I'm pleased to say Gide's experiment worked. The complete book is a brilliant success. His "novelist's novel" is perhaps one of the most important literary results of the early twentieth century, crafting a compelling story of interesting characters, maintaining great intellectual interest throughout. This novel is recommendable to anyone who enjoys fine literature.
Note: Other reviews invariably paint this book in shocking shades of homosexual or hedonistic material, but this is misleading at best. It's true, a homosexual and hedonistic tone appears at places, Count Passavant being the worst offender, but Gide is not a pornographer, he is a moralist. Homosexual himself, Gide was also Protestant (Huguenot), and like his brilliant work "The Immoralist", he believes in showing a moral lesson through human action.
Finally, two small quibbles: An emotional incident at the end of the book, based on a newspaper article Gide clipped, seems incongruous with the rest. It doesn't detract from the book, but it seems tacked on for special effect. Also, while excellent for the most part, the translation insists on leaving some expressions in the French original, such as "chef d'oeuvre" instead of "masterpiece", or "entr'acte" instead of "intermission".

Unique, Unforgettable

By now I think I've read THE COUNTERFITTERS about five times in perhaps twenty or twenty-five or more years. It is impossible to describe, adequately, in 1,000 words. One can say about it only that it is one of the truly 20th Century novels -- what Gide thought of as a psychological novel -- and has many of the characteristics peculiar to modern 20th Century art. It is daringly erotic; it is asymetrical and does not depend on 'plot;' it is both intensely emotional and very detatched; it is a survey of both personality and character, without benefit of religious or moral cant.
I've picked up this book and begun reading at random any number of times. I've read this book through from cover to cover almost as often, and every time I've picked it up, it has shown me a new side of itself; it has twisted in my mind like a living thing refusing to be trapped. It is a new book every time; an astonishment. A living masterpiece of fiction.

Pretense and Compassion

Andre Gide's "The Counterfeiters" is a novel about individual development in a society structured by deceit. The French writer began the novel after World War I and continued working on it for years until it was published in 1927. Set in Paris, the story describes upper middle class adolescent boys and the men who exploit them. The plot progresses in a somewhat disjointed fashion as Gide inserts psychoanalytic insights popular at the time. Some of Gide's journal entries, included as an appendix to the novel, indicate a dissatisfaction with his ability to produce seamless connections between realistic structure and unconscious processes.

In the first half of the novel, the young characters are introduced, and their intellectual, social, and artistic developments are described in an engaging manner reminiscent of Balzac. The reader is involved in the plot and cares about the behavior of each of the boys. The children are becoming adults without the realization that a single immature act can determine a life path.

In the second half of the book, the pace of the plot slows as Gide inserts an increasing number of psychological interpretations into the story. The device he uses is a journal written by a novelist character, Edouard, who is using his experience with the boys and their families to write his own novel. With this voice, Gide is able to discuss events from the point of view of a witness who is intimately involved in the action and assumes a role of psychoanalyst.

The final chapters of the novel demonstrate Gide's success in the integration of form and free expression as the plot accelerates to chaos and resolution. The reader understands that all of the boys are counterfeiters in their interactions with family, friends, and others. This is expected from adolescents who are impulsive and largely ignorant of life's consequences. But we do not expect the adult characters to be counterfeiters, to try to deceive by pretense and dissembling in order to exploit the boys socially, intellectually, and sexually. Though this counterfeit life is entrenched in the adults, Gide provides hope that the younger generation is capable of insight and judgment and can avoid dissolute lives.

Complete redemption by the boys is possible if they recognize the immorality of their external counterfeit roles. They must learn to stop the narcissistic internal voice that speaks to them incessantly reflecting the counterfeit influence of parents and friends. Finally, they can enter the silence of genuine communication with people, without guile or envy, and experience a compassionate and selfless immersion in the lives of others.

Excellent overview

This book is a very good introduction to the Buddhist tradition, historically and cross-culturally. The book incorporates excerpts from basic scriptures and major writings, in an effort to represent the mainstream of Buddhist thought. Although, as they state in the preface, there is "an enormous diversity within Buddhism and no fixed standard of orthodoxy" the editor and authors succeed in presenting the "common ground of discussion" they aim to reveal. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in beginning a study of Buddhist history, thought and culture.

Book is in fact a Reader

This book is not an history of Buddhism in India, China and Japan. It is a reader broadly divided into 13 sections. These are briefly introduced by the editor. The editor's intrusions are minimal and it is rarely clear why certain "representative" passages have been chosen, and others left out. That said, I felt the book adequately covered the traditions it sought to represent. And, for a text book, it's quite inexpensive.

The Bird's-Eye View of Buddhism

This is a huge overview of the many sects and schools of Buddhism that developed in India, China, and then Japan. There is very little detail here, and the authors/editors don't dwell on anyone or any subject for long before moving on, but if you are looking for a survey, that is the book's great strength. Another thing to be aware of is that aside from introductions to each country's tradition at the start of the three major sections, the authors/editors prefer to say little and let Buddhist texts (in translation of course) speak for themselves. This might be a negative if you are looking for hand-holding and scholarly exegesis, but personally I found it very rewarding - no book on Buddhism I've ever read has made the various sutras and other texts so accessible, and in such manageable and well-chosen little chunks.

I take one star off because at times a book of this length, yet with no stylistic consistency (due to the enormous variety of sources translated here) and little thematic unity can drag. Reading excerpt after excerpt can get tiring at times when you are looking for the deeper or unitive meaning of what is being taught. Another thing is there's a slight and generally well-concealed, but still evident, bias toward the Mahayana evidenced here, and the occasional derogatory remark toward the selfish little Hinayana school. To be expected, of course, from scholars whose area of expertise is purely Mahayanist nations (China/Japan), but out of place in an otherwise so balanced and scholarly work.

All in all though this book will let you read a lot of the texts/sutras as they are in themselves, and introduce you to an enormous number of Buddhist thinkers, mystics, schools, traditions, lineages, and so on, while providing a decent picture of how Buddhism developed in India and then spread through China to Japan. Recommended for anyone interested in Buddhist history.

The war between the United States and Mexico, often passed over lightly as a sort of rehearsal for the American Civil War, is dealt with by Eisenhower ( The Bitter Woods ) as an event of major significance in the nation's history. (It was certainly major from the loser's point of view: Mexico gave up more than half its territory in the 1848 Treaty of Gaudalupe Hidalgo.) This well-written, comprehensive history of the war takes into account the political and diplomatic dimensions as well as the military. The two principal campaigns are traced in colorful detail: Zachary Taylor's battles in northeast Mexico, aggressively fought until Winfield Scott appropriated that general's best troops for his own amphibious landing at Veracruz, and Scott's over land drive on Mexico City against formidable opposition, brilliantly successful despite weak support from Washington. Eisenhower, son of the former president, suggests that Winfield Scott was the most capable soldier this country has ever produced. Of President James Polk, one of the three major characters in this lively narrative, the author remarks, "Manifest Destiny was not Polk's invention, but he was its ideal agent." Author tour.

Eisenhower is a historian from whom there are too few books. The author of The Bitter Woods (1969) has produced a cool and thoughtful look at the understated conflict which preceded and shaped the Civil War. The narrative is detailed but fast-moving, and Eisenhower has brilliantly captured the political mood and the elan of the American and Mexican forces. Lay readers will enjoy the personalities; academics will approve of Eisenhower's research and historiography. There have been surprisingly few books on this subject in recent years, and this is the best one since Otis Singletary's The Mexican War (LJ 7/60).

A real eye opener.

This well-written account of the Mexican-American conflict is a fascinating story of the war with Mexico. It covers the political as well as military aspects from the Mexican advance into Texas to the eventual purchase of California and New Mexico. The military dominance of Mexico's world-class calvary and armed forces contrasts vividly with the greedy and egotistical leadership of Santa Anna.

This book did much to dispel the myths and impressions I remember from grade school history. Texans and Californians will find this work extremely interesting. I was left wanting to know more about Santa Anna. I picked up a couple of books on his life that are bizarre to say the least. The only known leader of a country that led a revolt and overthrew himself! You can't make this stuff up. Don't miss out on this account!

A model for this book might have been Donald R. Hickey's "The War of 1812: A Short History." In "The War of 1812," Hickey summarizes both the political and military battles of the War of 1812 concisely and elegantly, leaving the reader with a clear view of the issues. Eisenhower's book fails in this regard.
Neither an in-depth look at the battles, nor a political history of the war, the book is an uncomfortable blend that never quite makes it on any level. There are some surprising omissions here (Where exactly were the borders of Texas at the beginning of the war? Why did Polk allow Santa Anna back into Mexico?), and "continuity" often seems amiss. Detailed descriptions end suddenly and awkward three sentence paragraphs appear, as if the editors were uncertain how to proceed. The book is "half a loaf" and readers interested in specific topics (the politics, cultural impacts or the battles) would be better off looking elswhere.
