Amazon.com Review
When Carl L. Becker's classic study of the text of the Declaration of Independence first appeared in 1922, it marked a great departure from the passionate and patriotic tenor of many existing historical analyses. Becker claims his work was well received by all reviewers save one, who criticized its preoccupation with hard cold documents. In the 1941 introduction to this edition, Becker defends his approach, stating: "I was aware that men had bled and died for freedom.... But on this occasion I chose to write a book about the document itself ... a state paper of sufficient renown to be classed with the world's classics of political literature."

Becker describes the rhythm of the first line of the Declaration of Independence as "that felicitous, haunting cadence which is the peculiar quality of Jefferson's best writing." He goes on to define the purpose of the document, its views, where those views arose, and how succeeding generations have accepted or modified them. Chapters such as "Historical Antecedents of the Declaration: The Natural Rights Philosophy," "Drafting the Declaration; The Literary Qualities of the Declaration," and "The Philosophy of the Declaration in the Nineteenth Century" distinguish this book as one of the most complete studies of America's--and arguably the world's--most important historical document.

Indispensable reading for the serious student of Declaration
By J. P. Ledbetter
In all my studies of the Founders, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence over the last quarter century. I have found no other single book that allowed me to so clearly understand (from Mr Beckers perspective) the feelings, enviornment, philosophies that enriched and motivated the leves and character of our founders like this book does. Becker is a genious in the way he presents step by step the methodical and ever changin adjustments of their reasoning during that critical time in our history. One should not feel their studies complete or even rational until they have obsorbed this unique work. Then and only then can they put all they have learned, studied and pondered into that mixer we call our brains and come up with a true appreciation of the founders and their great work of that era. A must reading. I would only add that even though Becker is perhaps correct in his assertion that Natural Law allowed the colonist to justify their stance against Britan. There is a truth about their religion that I believe should have been emphasised in more detail. Individually many of them were very Godly, the natural law argument allowed them to justify Independence but was not as ingrained into their souls as their religious beliefs were. Otherwise this book is one of a kind.

Terrific insights...
By M. Schubert
In high school, kids spend time reviewing the Declaration of Independence and learning its meaning. This book goes well beyond that to inspect the thoughts and ideas that were prevalent in the late 18th century and how they influenced the document. Becker goes into great detail about natural rights theory according to John Locke and explores the ins and outs of its implications. This to me was the strongest and most enjoyable part of the book. He also explores the thoughts and ideas that were circulating Britain at the time.
Building on this foundation, he weaves a tale as to why certain things were worded as they were (like Britain being run as a ruthless tyrant), and why certain things were left out altogether (like slavery). He also closely examines the changes that took place in the drafts and attributes them to individuals who proofread Jefferson's draft. I really could have done without his granularity in this area.
In all, this was a fascinating read. For those of you who want to extend your knowledge beyond the simple presentation of the document you received in high school, I highly recommend buying this book!

Becker uses the term "sambo" as a racist pejorative.
By Raisuli the Magnificent
My ancestors fought in the Revolution under the direct command of his Excellency General George Washington (I think in the PA militia), and the tradition stemming therefrom is most heartfelt. It is the very fibre of my being.

So imagine me in Barnes and Noble in the mid 1990s, and I disocver this book as I rediscover my heritage.

I read it cover to cover in a day (it's a fairly easy read) and for the most part enjoy it until I come upon the part about slavery. Mister Becker pulls no punches in regards to his blatant racism, calling both the ancestor black slaves of today's African Americans "sambos", and how the clause in slavery cannot possibly serve them because they cannot appreciate true freedom.

I personally fail to see any other enlightenment from this tragically flawed tome. If you can gleam more from it (as I probably did at the time), then that's great, but at that moment of discussing the imported forced labor I no longer wanted anything more to do with this book.

There's more than just poor Becker's racism to be sure, but right now that's the strongest image I have from this book.

Read if you must, but be warned.

Barnett Newman's writings reveal him to be an impassioned and articulate analyst of art and society who never hesitated to make his views known and always stood by them. To understand Newman's unique place in the culture of the twentieth century, we must know both his paintings and his words—a knowledge made possible by this long-awaited volume.

"Barnett Newman [1905-1970] was a thinker who chose to develop his ideas both in painting and in writing. He was also a citizen who made his acts of painting and writing political. And he was an artist."—Richard Schiff, from the Introduction

"Barnett Newman regarded himself, with reason, as an embattled artist, someone who had to speak out and speak plainly if he was to be given his due. . . . None too soon, the evidence for all this has been assembled and decked out with the facts that many a younger reader will need." -- John Russell, New York Times Book Review

"Should be read not only by fans of Newman's art, but by anyone who is interested in the cultural affairs of this century." -- Yve-Alain Bois, Art in America

From Publishers Weekly
Schnabel, a lion of the New York celebrity scene, here produces an autobiography at the grand old age of 35. Written in a flat, almost minimalist style, the memoir tells how a young man from Brooklyn, then Texas, lands in Soho, gets discovered, becomes rich and famous but preserves his artistic integrity as he bums around Europe and New York. Schnabel writes as if the daily doings of his cliquish circle are bound to be of immense interest to readers. He offers tough-talking advice to aspiring artists and sets down his critical opinions on numerous contemporaries; sometimes he drifts into a sort of Beat prose-poetry as he confronts themes like death and fame. Approximately 140 reproductions of paintings and objects are included. Author tour. (November

From Library Journal
Schnabel is a "hot" property in the contemporary art world. His brutal, broken crockery paintings and philosophical braggadocio have won him critical attention and acclaim, not to mention sales. Unfortunately, this autobiographical meander tells us much more than we need to know about Schnabel's views on artistic production. The artist's linking of passions to visual development seems a calculated evocation of, let's say, Jackson Pollock? The result is an intellectually tiresome text, with good, although incompletely captioned, illustrations. Though the book is expensive, some specialized and art school collections will want it. the best Schnabel art book
By Matt Jones
As a young painter I value art books as my teachers, a removed version of the artist the book covers. Schnabel's book enhances (and probably created) the mythic figure he would become (including his Achilean fall) and offers great images of the works of art he created up until the book's publication. The photos of the work are excellent. The commentary is honest (and heavily colored by Schnabel) and story-like (written with a short "burst" style like a Chuck Pahlaniuk novel). It is nearly embarrassing (which is good). Schnabel is an undervalued painter and mind. This book is an excellent entry point into his thoughts, biography, and work. There are few decent Schnabel books out there and this is by far the best.

Autobiography of a modern genius
By Jeffrey Ellis
Though he's better known now as a filmmaker, Julian Schnabel was also one of the leading figures on the American Art Scene in the late '70s and '80s where, for better or worse, his gigantic canvases and infamous arrogance typified the last years of Warhol's New York. You either love the Schnabel of that period or you hate him. Luckily for me, I thought he was a genius and therefore I enjoyed his autobiography, Cvj. Covering his childhood in Texas, Cvj doesn't carry all of the insider gossip that a lot of readers will probably be looking for but it is a rare and fascinating glimpse into the development of one of the greatest artists of modern times.

if you have heard of Schnabel, the illustrations in this book will persuade you that it's best not to see his work. If you would like to read the autobiography of a mediocre painter and consummate poser, this book might be for you.

The Archaeology of Knowledge: And the Discourse on Language, by Michel Foucault

In France, a country that awards its intellectuals the status other countries give their rock stars, Michel Foucault was part of a glittering generation of thinkers, one which also included Sartre, de Beauvoir and Deleuze. One of the great intellectual heroes of the twentieth century, Foucault was a man whose passion and reason were at the service of nearly every progressive cause of his time. From law and order, to mental health, to power and knowledge, he spearheaded public awareness of the dynamics that hold us all in thrall to a few powerful ideologies and interests. Arguably his finest work, Archaeology of Knowledge is a challenging but fantastically rewarding introduction to his ideas.

From the Back Cover
Madness, sexuality, power, knowledge-are these facts of life or simply parts of speech? In a series of works of astonishing brilliance, historian Michel Foucault excavated the hidden assumptions that govern the way we live and the way we think. The Archaeology of Knowledge begins at the level of 'things said' and moves quickly to illuminate the connections between knowledge, language, and action in a style at once profound and personal.

Another (difficult) chapter in Foucault's oeuvre
By Giovanni Mantilla
"Archaeology Of Knowledge" finds Foucault at his barest, trying to build up his own theory. Like others have said, it is fascinating to see how much he tries to encompass and how extremely difficult his own enterprise is. Foucault spends many pages trying to explain to us what he means by "discoursive formation", "object formation", "formation of concepts", etc., and the place where his own theory stands vis-à-vis a so-called "history of ideas". You can learn lots from this book, because, like myself, sometimes you get lost in Foucault's magistral writing, his fabulous way of weaving history and thus cannot clearly follow his own particular method of research. If you want to see some of his (earlier, almost stricly discourse-oriented) key concepts clarified, reading this book will prove very fruitful. As always, you're left with a lot of questions and with a distinctive feeling of "now what?". But then again, that's what's so utterly beautiful and engaging about Foucault... he forces you to think for yourself and provides you of the right tools to do it.
I read the spanish translation of this book so I can't comment on the english one, but the contents of this book are priceless.

Archaeology, the Archean, the Archaic, and the Archive
By jeremy.jae@cell.matrix.cn
The Conclusion of this book (Chapter V) is perhaps the most interesting. Foucault appears to be corresponding with an undisclosed someone, wether with himself as a self critique, or with a critic. I won't put asside the possibility he is coversing with someone from the Tavistock Inst.; as Tavistock Publications Lim. was the first place of translation for this text. If he had not suceeded, in his archaeology of knowledge, an undermining of structuralism, with the thesis on human discourse, then perhaps it is because of a lack of conviction on part of this "someone" or on part of himself.
Understanding the implication of Foucault's thought process from a first read requires a refflective reader and in many ways requires a far-reaching mind from the start. This work is composed of a terminal plethora of architectures and teleological plethoras of exemplifications from science and history. Economics, stats, documents, records, and items from all discourses are examined and presented as artifacts of discursive knowledge. The Archeaology itself is the thematic for the Archive, and the archive is the preservatory of knowledge, that such discursive knowledge is preserved is archaeology. Foucault's task then is to undermine the archives of knowledge and present that knowledge back upon the structural framework of rational discourse. With observational power and radical ability, Foucault goes beyond the framework and invisibly subordinates it's needs to be observed and it's intention to be ritcheous (ritcheous in all that it accounts for, and ritcheous of the observer.) From the most primordial archean, to the revival of the primal archaic state, to the archaology of all knowledge, Foucault shows that in a way discourses built upon historical facts are like artifacts themselves. Here in the conclusion we see that the problematic of language (langue) as the derivational principal of discourses, cannot be made paletable (literaly!)
And so the audition fails because language or the "langue" is not sufficiently constructed for what it represents in discursive practice. At the zenith of the teleological project, when temporal conceptualization extinguishes itself from being quantified into being qualified, at the last quarter of the era, perhaps this work will be gleamed from the resevoire and conrgessively discussed.

Remembrance of Things Past: Volume I - Swann's Way & Within a Budding Grove (Vintage), by Marcel Proust

Here are the first two volumes of Proust’s monumental achievement, Swann’s Way and Within a Budding Grove. The famous overture to Swann's Way sets down the grand themes that govern In Search of Lost Time: as the narrator recalls his childhood in Paris and Combray, exquisite memories, long since passed—his mother’s good-night kiss, the water lilies on the Vivonne, his love for Swann’s daughter Gilberte—spring vividly into being. In Within a Budding Grove—which won the Prix Goncourt in 1919, bringing the author instant fame—the narrator turns from his childhood recollections and begins to explore the memories of his adolescence. As his affections for Gilberte grow dim, the narrator discovers a new object of attention in the bright-eyed Albertine. Their encounters unfold by the shores of Balbec. One of the great works of Western literature, now in the new definitive French Pleiade edition translated by C.K. Scott Moncrieff and Terence Kilmartin.

Proust and Moncrieff
By Kevin Lindsey
Yes, Proust is difficult and, yes, he's worth the effort. However, very little is said of the Moncrieff translation. It's simply gorgeous. Compare his title, "Remembrance of Things Past," with "In Search of Lost Time." The first is poetry, the second the title of a History Channel program.
Buy the Moncrieff translation.

Great read. Take time and enjoy France and Proust's ...
By Happy Camper
Read in the past. I wanted to complete my 3 volumes. Great read. Take time and enjoy France and Proust's way of describing France in the 1850's. How simple a way to describe nature and people without the insertion of T.V and radio. None of this is in the book. You have to savor the words. It is not a quick read but better for enjoying his way of describing life!

The most staggering book you'll ever read
By Chad Smith
This novel is absolutely staggering. I remember not just what I read from it, but what I was doing as I was reading, what the weather was, etc. It's such an overwhelming experience to be immersed in Proust's words, and truly un-like any other novel you'll ever read. I think it takes a sensitive disposition to really appreciate it and some will not like it, but I suggest reading a bit of it (the beginning is a good example of what to expect). It doesn't make any sense to consider the length when deciding whether or not to read-- if you like it, you'll want it to be as long as possible, and if you don't like it, it doesn't matter how long it is. I doubt many people have moderated feelings toward these books. And you can really enjoy these books on any level you want-- someone who casually reads it for pleasure may like it just as much as someone really into critical and literary theory.

A few of my favorite sentences:
"In the evening, when I came in from my walk and thought of the approaching moment when I must say good night to my mother and see her no more, the steeple was by contrast so soft and gentle, there at the close of day, that it looked as if it had been thrust like a brown velvet cushion against the pallid sky which had yielded beneath its pressure, had hollowed slightly to make room for it, and had correspondingly risen on either side; while the cries of birds that wheeled around it seemed to intensify its silence, to elongate its spire still further, and to invest it with some quality beyond the power of words."

"And I should have liked to be able to sit down and spend the whole day there reading and listening to the bells, for it was so blissful and so quiet that, when an hour struck, you would have said not that it broke in upon the calm of the day, but that it relieved the day of its superfluity, and that the steeple, with the indolent, painstaking exactitude of a person who has nothing else to do, had simply--in order to squeeze out and let fall the few golden drops which had slowly and naturally accumulated in the hot sunlight--pressed, at a given moment, the distended surface of the silence."

"The places we have known do not belong only to the world of space on which we map them for our own convenience. None of them was ever more than a thin slice, held together between the contiguous impressions that composed our life at that time; the memory of a particular image is but regret for a particular moment; and houses, roads, avenues are as fugitive, alas, as the years."

I could go on and on.

This version, specifically, is a really beautiful book, the pages and typeface are very nice, and the translation is unbelievable. So good, that the French-English translation prize was named after C.K. Scott Moncrieff. I do recommend the box set with all 3 editions though.

There are no villains in the piece. Crime, like disease, is not interesting: it is something to be done away with by general consent, and that is all there is about it. It is what men do at their best, with good intentions, and what normal men and women find that they must and will do in spite of their intentions, that really concern us.

Amazon.com Review
Joan of Arc, born in 1412, was burned at the stake in 1431, canonized by the Catholic Church in 1920, and, like most saints, whitewashed by history. Canonization tends to strip a saint of supposedly un-Christian attributes such as rebelliousness, pride, and intolerance. And Joan, despite having been a stubborn, haughty, naive, even foolish girl, has for much of history been remembered only as a pious martyr. However, George Bernard Shaw's play, Saint Joan, completed in 1925, began the modern rehabilitation of the icon as a fully human, fallible character--not to mention a poster girl for teenage rebellion and feminism. Shaw's Joan, like the real Maid of Orleans, leads the fight to drive the English out of her native France, insists on direct communication with her God instead of submitting to the mediation of Catholic priests, and refuses to dress, speak, or act according to traditional notions of how women were expected to behave. Until the closing scene of Shaw's play, however, neither Joan nor her foes are cast in neatly heroic terms. Both are earnestly pursuing their partial visions of the truth. In the play's famous epilogue, Shaw suggests that even 400 years later, most of us are so limited by our own perspectives that we are unable to tell the difference between a saint and a heretic. "O God that madest this beautiful earth, when will it be ready to receive Thy saints?" Joan asks, preparing for her death. "How long, O Lord, how long?" --Michael Joseph Gross

Review
''[T]he most fervent thing Shaw ever wrote--the play that is poetically the most moving, that comes closest to high tragedy, a work inspired with a truly elating sense of justice; a work in which the mature rationality of en esprit fort that has outgrown the confines of the eighteenth and even the nineteenth century, bows before sanctity; a work fully deserving its world fame.'' --Thomas Mann

''St. Joan contains not only some of the playwright's most acerbic writing but also his most poetic.'' --New York Times

''Gifted audio drama director Yuri Rasovsky artfully melds the talents of actress Amy Irving, as the gung-ho French farm maiden-turned-warrior by the 'voices' in her head, to those of a veteran male cast to bring us a fresh and energetic revival. Rasovsky again displays seemingly effortless skill in translating a lengthy theatrical piece to intriguing audio drama . . . Rasovsky's highly competent and satisfying effort, then, represents both an excellent introduction to Shaw and a stand-out performance.'' --Captain Radio

''Those who doubt the power of radio theater should be silenced by this performance of what has been called 'the most fervent thing Shaw ever wrote.' Saint Joan tells the story of Joan of Arc - not the saint, but the girl, a girl who is defiant, nonconformist, spirited. Also told is the story of a France not ready for her, a church that fears her, and barons and earls who fear her seeds of nationalism. This production features a star-studded cast: Amy Irving plays an inspired Joan; other players include Robertson Dean, Scott Brick, and Stefan Rudnicki. Sound effects and music are understated but also unnecessary as the cast more than carries the heartbreaking story. Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award.'' --AudioFile

''Written at the height of Bernard Shaw's long and distinguished career, Saint Joan is Theatre of Ideas at its best. The play . . . presents the tragedy of a selfless, courageous young girl with a spiritual sensibility so far ahead of her time that she would be as dangerous today as she was thought to be when she was condemned to death in 1431 . . . The role calls for an actor who can demonstrate this and let Joan soar to tragic heights besides. Amy Irving does an outstanding job. The all-star cast plays off of her and supports her well. The final dream sequence, which moves the play from the 15th century squarely into our own times, is beautifully rendered.'' --Soundcommentary.com (Editors' Pick)

Shaw's Ridiculous, Inaccurate Jehanne d'Arc
By A Customer
I was truly disappointed by Shaw's wholly inaccurate, blatantly chauvanistic Preface (Shaw actually contends that Jehanne was tried more than fairly by sympathetic, God-fearing and open-minded men, and that she was burned as a result of her own stupidity!). I was more disappointed by the play itself-it is not a play about Jehanne's life, but rather about the pompous musings of male peacocks spreading their tails like an eclipse over the Maid herself. Shaw portrays Jehanne as a silly little tomboy who threw off her skirts and donned trousers to play soldier and skipped into the King's chambers cooing & giggling about God and war. Jehanne is rarely actually IN a scene - much of the play is, as I said, dominated by the peacocks of her trial discussing her, ranting about her, defaming her, etc. She only skips in throughout to swoon mindlessly over God and stamped her spoiled foot for war. Shaw gives one the sense that her presence in a scene is only disrupting the continuation of his wordy play of peacocks! Redeeming quality: the last scenes - Shaw actually allows Jehanne to grow a sudden brain and speak out intelligently against the peacocks, which he has already condemned her for in his preface! For real facts and a true portrayal of The Maid, stick to Regine Pernoud.

Drama Instead of History
By Jeanette Romee
This is George Bernard Shaw's most important work. A successful drama that has enjoyed continuous popularity for nearly eighty years is worth a read. Most audiences find it very satisfying. Shaw has a gift for lucid dialogue that brings a centuries old story to life. This is one of the most approachable of the great English language plays.

Why then does "Saint Joan" fall short of five stars?

Fictional accounts of Joan of Arc's life are numerous and seldom accurate. Shakespeare makes her a witch. Voltaire makes her an idiot. Schiller makes her admirable - and gives her a magical helmet that protects her from harm until she falls in love.

In a rare exception to his usual satirical style, Mark Twain spent months in France researching her life and published a fictional biography. Readers who enjoy accurate historical fiction would do well with Twain's "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc." Twain considered this - not "Huckleberry Finn" - to be his finest work.

Shaw pays far more attention to accuracy than most fictionalizations. Several lines in the play are Shaw's own translations from her trial transcript. Shaw's long introductory essay aspires to be history as well as drama. Most scholars agree with his assessment of Joan of Arc's socioeconomic background. Shaw acknowledges a few dramatic economies: he combines the historical Jean d'Orleans and Duke Jean d'Alencon into a single character. What causes problems are Shaw's unacknowledged deviations from the factual record.

Shaw argues that Joan of Arc was a forerunner of Protestantism who got a fair trial. Among serious scholars this argument gains no credibility. A surviving letter from the English government that financed the trial guaranteed her execution even if the court found her not guilty. Joan of Arc never rejected the Roman Catholic Church: she rejected the authority of politically biased judges bent on discrediting her and, by inference, on discrediting the king she had crowned. Twenty-four years after her death the Pope reopened the case. The appeals court not only found her innocent but discovered such extensive violations of proper court procedure that it accused the late Bishop Cauchon of heresy.

Shaw's choice works as drama rather than as history yet he advocates it on historical grounds. He might be sincere but he is certainly not honest. To an academic scholar who has explained the facts to umpteen Shaw enthusiasts the difference can be infuriating. This is why "Saint Joan" collects a handful of scathing reviews.

A reader who understands this little shell game with history should have a lively time with the drama. If this is your first reading of "Saint Joan" then I envy you. Nothing quite equals the first encounter.

Problem of Gender? No, a Problem of Genre!
By Gio
Radical feminism, to which I pledge complete allegiance, has put gender issues at the forefront of historical interest in Joan of Arc, but historiography is scarcely pertinent to the reading of George Bernard Shaw's play 'Saint Joan.' I'm told that this awkward play was a smash hit and held the stage for decades in Britain, but it's hard to imagine how or why. The first problem is not gender but 'genre.' Is it intended to play as a farce, before an audience that will chuckle genteelly at hearing Jehan d'Arc speak with a Yorkshire brogue? Or as a philosophical tragicomedy, preparing the stage of the future for Samuel Becket? The dialogue is half music-hall burlesque and half pompous twaddle. I'd have a hard time declaring which is more juvenile, the humor or the sententious lecturing.

If anyone who reads this review has seen a staged production of the play, I'd be interested in hearing whether it was 'played for laughs' or performed earnestly. Shaw is of course taken quite seriously in the world of anglophone theater, though actual productions of his works are rare in the USA. Shaw was not reticent about assuring "us" of his intelligence, and not particularly chary of condescension, but this play features some of the dumbest jokes and most preposterous dialogue I've ever read. Any audience that wasn't overawed by Shaw's elevated reputation would groan out loud at Joan's flippant folksiness.

There seems to be a "Joan-of-Arc" effect on the minds of writers, which disposes them to bizarre extravagance. I turned to Shaw's 'Saint Joan' as a follow-up to reading Mark Twain's romantic novel/ biography "Joan of Arc.' Both works are based on historical sources, chiefly the trial records, yet neither can be interpreted as 'history' in a modern sense. Shaw was aware of Twain's book, and regarded it skeptically, yet the two works have more in common than not. Both are polemics against humanity's inability to comprehend sainthood.

The information in this book is priceless
By Just Bill
If you're in the profession of advertising, and this book isn't on your bookshelf, dog-eared, stained and well-worn, you've been ripping off your clients.
The entire premise of Ogilvy on Advertising boils down to one simple statement (coined by Claude Hopkins nearly 80 years ago in his book Scientific Advertising): "Advertising is salesmanship."
Sadly, the advertising world has drifted from that solid mooring. And now those who profess it are considered anachronistic at best. And kooky at worst.
Ogilvy, a staunch admirer of Hopkins, firmly embraced that tenet -- and it propelled him and his agency (Ogilvy and Mather) to the Mount Olympus of the advertising world. Most importantly, it made his clients rich beyond the dreams of avarice.
Ogilvy's writing is captivating. His work, legendary. His ideas, timeless. The information in this book is easily work 10 times the cover price.
I've been in the profession of advertising for nearly 15 years. I'm also an adjunct professor at a nearby university. I wholeheartedly recommend Ogilvy On Advertising to my students. I firmly embrace its principles in my profession.
And I, without hesitation, urge you to read it as well.

For anyone who uses creativity at work
By A Customer
This is one of those rare books everyone ought to have to read. Like "The Elements of Style," "Writing That Works, and "Profiles in Courage." I had read this book back in 1990 when I was out of work, looking for a job in advertising. The advertising job never happened for me and I moved on to other things.
I did not realize, until I recently picked up a copy to re-read, how much it had influenced me the first time I read it. Half of the way I conduct myself at work and a lot of my thought processes and strategy is still influenced by what is in this book. I make over 6 times what I made back in 1991. I realize now I have Mr. Ogilvy to thank for a great deal of that.
Read this book. At least once.

Half of all the advertising course you need
By Michael Gebert
Want to understand how to be a copywriter or an art director? You need two books, and then you need to start making ads. Ogilvy's is one of them. Although it's now 20 years old, the examples may seem out of date and some of his imperial pronoucements ("No reverse type") may seem fusty, don't be fooled. You will learn all you need to know about the classical art of making smart ads that make a strong, memorable point here. You will gain a grounding in the history and development of the profession which will serve you well. Then, when you've finished it, read "Hey Whipple, Squeeze This" by Luke Sullivan to bring your perspective a little more up to date (always important in trend-crazed ad agencies). But don't kid yourself that Ogilvy won't be the foundation of your work.

From Library Journal
The fact that Starer is not the best known of contemporary composers is of no consequence. His autobiography is an exciting tale, starting with his Austrian youth as a prodigy and continuing with his studies in Jerusalem and at Juilliard. His story, modestly told, is effectively integrated with significant observations on aesthetics and warm and often humorous anecdotes about William Steinberg, Martha Graham, Sergius Kagen, and other artists with whom he was associated. There are also vivid scenes of Nazi Vienna, British Palestine, and Cairo. Recommended for music and larger public libraries. Dominique-Ren e de Lerma, Music Dept., Morgan State Univ., Baltimore

About the Author
W. H. Auden was born in York in 1907 and brought up in Birmingham. His first book, Poems, was published by T. S. Eliot at Faber in 1930. He went to Spain during the civil war, to Iceland (with Louis MacNeice) and later travelled to China. In 1939 he and Christopher Isherwood left for America, where Auden spent the next fifteen years lecturing, reviewing, writing poetry and opera librettos, and editing anthologies. He became an American citizen in 1946, and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1948. In 1956 he was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford, and a year later went to live in Kirchstetten in Austria, after spending several summers on Ischia. He died in Vienna in 1973.

One of the great poets of the twentieth century
By Craig Matteson
Wystan Hugh (W. H.) Auden is rightly regarded as one of the great poets of the twentieth century. He is one of my favorites because of his great skill with language, his ability to talk about everyday life in wonderfully insightful ways, and to sing while he helps us see what he sees. His even greater gift is to make his words feel as if they came from out of our own mind and heart. We want to possess them.

Yet, he was also a very learned man, but his learning always has a point about life rather than allowing him to step into a spotlight for our adulation. You can flip to any page of this volume and find something to wonder at. Even the plainest poems have depths to plumb and the seemingly obscure yield to patient reading.

While Auden has a somewhat complicated biography, it would be a mistake to get sidetracked in too many details. While knowing the life of an artist often aids our understanding of his work, it is also a mistake to see too many parallels in his work with the happenstance of his life. Great artists draw on their lives, but they also transcend them.

I am very grateful to have this volume in my library.

If you have to start with your first long poem. Let 'Letter to Lord Byron' be it.
By Himri
Auden says that Byron's is 'a style whose meaning does not need a spanner'. So is his, in his long poem 'Letter to Lord Byron'.

Don't believe the old man.
By M. Schwalbaum
Auden is my favorite "modern" English poet (I hate TS Eliot and his fascist friend Pound, for their politics and posturing). I've loved Auden since my college days in the late 40's.(Yes. 1940's.) In those days the poems started with "Musee des Beaux Arts," included "Law Like Love" and "In Memory of W.B. Yeats." The songs started with "As I walked Out One Evening."
A fine clear voice, very even expressions, and sentiments that one could easily subscibe to. I tried to write like that (and in part succeeded). The copy in my library is dated 1945.
Recently I decided to share my love of Auden's poetry and ordered three copies of the book descibed in this listing. What a mistake! It appears that Auden after about 1940, and until the end of his apparently miserable life, changed his style and everything else about himself, AND rewrote, deleted and butchered his early work. What a sad revelation. Don't believe the old man.
I suggest you read the review by N. Dorward for Collected Poems (Modern Library) here at Amazon for more about this and WHICH AUDEN TO BUY AND READ.
Here it is in part--
"This volume makes me ultimately rather sad, that a poet with such enormous promise (the work he wrote in his early 20s is still utterly astonishing in its accomplishment & daring) never quite made good on it, & even came to hate much of his own best work. Turn to the _Selected Poems_ to get a better measure of what Auden was as a writer. "
