From Library Journal
Guatemalan writer Perera (Unfinished Conquest: The Guatemalan Tragedy, LJ 9/1/93) chronicles the history of his Sephardic family from his parents' generation back to the family's Spanish origins. He discovers many eminent ancestors. The French branch of the family boasted Jacob Pereira, the 18th-century creator of a manual alphabet and techniques of articulation for training deaf mutes; and the brothers Isaac and Emile Pereire, who introduced the railways in France and, despite great wealth, supported workers' rights and denounced child labor. In tracing his family's history, Perera discovers Christian branches of the family and believes that there may even be Muslim branches. Despite minor errors in his chapter on the Sepharad in Spain, Perera's family history is a worthy addition to the growing literature on the Sephardim. It complements Howard Sachar's Farewell Espa?a: The World of Sephardim Remembered (LJ 11/15/94). Recommended for academic libraries and public libraries with strong reader interest in this area.?Robert Andrews, Duluth P.L., Minn.

From Booklist
Perera, who was born in Guatemala City of Sephardic Jews from Jerusalem, explores the history of his family, choosing those members whose lives illuminate important facets of the Sephardic experience. Perera traces his family back to the fourteenth century in Toledo, where the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492. Some fled to Portugal, where the Inquisition was introduced in 1547. He probes one branch of the family that left Portugal for France in 1703, finding safe haven in Bordeaux. Perera discusses his great-great-grandfather, who wrote two books of commentaries in the 1870s, rooted in his faith in the Kabbala's prophecies. We meet his mother, a woman who spoke seven languages but often lapsed into the earthy Ladino idiom of her ancestors. Perera re-creates the life of his grandfather in an effort to reclaim his own Jewish identity. This chronicle of Sephardic culture and history is a vivid and absorbing account by a first-rate writer. Fascinating
By Bonnee Shafner Oderberg
Some years ago I was introduced to a web designer whose last name was Perera. Although he came from a Catholic family, as I worked with him and being Jewish myself, I began to wonder if he was from Jewish roots in Spain. The more I worked with him, the stronger the feeling became. I asked him about it and he pretty much laughed it off, but did say that there was some vague family lore about it but no one knew. Eventually, I felt I wanted to know if it was true and my search lead me to this book. I felt Victor Perera's research is fascinating and brilliant. I couldn't put the book down. Of course, it proved my hunch beyond a reasonable doubt, I believe, and this was very satisfying. The web designer was perplexed at the news. I'm not sure if he shared it with him family or not. In any case, over the years, I still think about what an interesting book this is and I've recommended it to several people. Alas, last night I met a Jewish convert whose mother is from Spain and recommended the book once again. She is excited to get her hands on it.

Highly recommended.

The Pear Tree is ripe for the pickin...
By Sam
Great book,I was very interested in the premise after a friend bought it for me as a gift. I really enjoyed the book's flow and the Sefardic postmodern experience through the authors eyes. As I have written before the Sefardic experience is "complicated" to say the least. This experience can only be truly described by a fellow Andalusian Jew. I highly recommend this book for those who want to understand the complexities of being an Iberian Sefardic Jew. The Book reads easily and its a fascinating account of one of many families that are in exile both from Israel and from our beloved Sefarad. A true joy to read and relish in.
note: The duality between the Families having both Jews and Christians in it is very real to this day. Check out the cover.

a classic intellectual history of this period in American education
By Bronco Castro
This is a must read for anyone interested in the history of education in America. It is also full of fascinating facts that shed a bright light on whence we came as Americans. The author was a brilliant and articulate historian.

Excellent resource
By Gary Collier
A thorough examination of Progressivism and its effect on American education in the last century. The movement still influences educational thought today, and Cremin does an excellent job of explaining it, along with its luminaries, from beginning to end. Well written, though not exactly exciting: it's readable, but it is heavy reading.

A most important and historic book!
By Robert V. Rose, retired education researcher
This book was first copyrighted in 1961. I had read it a decade ago but just read it again. I had always know that Dewey's "progressive education" was all about trying to overthrough capitalism in America, but in this book Cremin, trying to make it politically neutral, leaves no doubt about it.

Although he believe that progressive education was dead by the middle 1950s, he clearly describes that in the preceeding half century, utopian educators had strongly attempted to shape American thinking through government action, into a socialist point of view. Many of the "progressive" quotations seem as if they could have come from the USSR.

Cremin felt, that although progressive education was effectively dead by the post McCarthy mid-fifties, he ends by pointing out that the efforts of progressivism truly "transformed our schools".

That's true today, when Marilyn Adams is telling us that most of our kids finishing first-grade still can't name and write all of the alphabet letters.

But it will be up to our voters to determine what kind of schools we'll have in the future.

John Brady, editor of Writer's Digest and himself an accomplished interviewer, has put together an indispensable guide to the art of questioning. In a lively, down-to-earth manner, "The Craft of Interviewing" covers all aspects of the interview process -- getting the interview, doing research, handling the subject face-to-face, hurdling hazards, getting tough, taking notes (on the sly, if need be), taping, dealing with off-the-record types, concluding the interview, verifying it, and writing it up. Brady has also filled the book with a myriad of anecdotes revealing the experiences of some of the best known interviewers of our times. A noteworthy appendix on the history of the interview is included.

This captures the essence of interviewing
By A Customer
I read this book ( published in 1976) many years ago. Since then, I've been a reporter and writer for the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek and Fortune. After a request to teach a journalism class, I purchased the book again, and found that it still captures the essence of interviewing. The examples in the book are a bit dated (it hasn't been revised ), but the underlying truths are still very close to those I've experienced in many interviews throughout my career.

Great in the 70s, Outdated in 2000
By A Customer
It is true that the basics of good interviewing haven't change much over the years, but they have changed some. And this book, while it was surely a must-read in the 70s, is so outdated that I found myself skipping the first chapter, then the second, then the third ... then much of the rest of the book. For example: there is a full chapter, and several pages scattered through the book, that talk about research techniques. This is pre-internet, pre-much-of-what's-out-there-today, and as a result, those 75 or so pages are useless. The same is true for the roughly 25 or 30 pages that talk about how to get an interview, and how to make a good first appearance. This is pre-email, and clearly pre-women's-lib. Many of the tips for women on how to get interviews and make sure they come out successful are down right offensive to women today. Fortunately, most female interviewers no longer have to rely solely on looking nice, batting eyelashes, and agreeing with everything their interviewee has to say. Yes, there are a few good pointers, but to buy and read an entire book for mearly a few pointers isn't necessary. There was nothing here that I hadn't seen elsewhere. For a good, up-to-date book on interviewing, try "Creative Interviewing," by Ken Metzler, it's over priced, but filled with great and useful information.

one of the best books on writing I've ever *used*
By Cassie Whyte
I think there is a difference between a book being 'old' vs. 'out-dated.'

Nowadays, no hard-copy book is going to be able to remain 'current' in terms of changing technologies, but this one was extremely helpful to me, very early on, in just thinking about the process of preparing for something unfamiliar to me at the time.

I read it soon after college, when I was reading just about anything Writer's Digest put out. A few years later, I managed to talk my way into a Staff Writer's position with a small award-winning busines newsweekly in New Orleans. Given how shy I was at the time, I was pleasantly shocked at how well prepared and even comfortable I felt as I set up and faced my first interviews. And I attribute much of that to this book and this author.

Years later, I still think much of the *thinking* here will translate well across the years and the technology, at least for those who like to approach things in terms of 'learning how to learn' vs. being handed a check-list. Interviewing has its practical and technical aspects, its nuts-and-bolts...but it's also an almost artistic experience in that 2 people can interview the same person and come out with very different results. This book helps you with a lot of the practical though sure, that's not going to include discussion of resources that weren't available back then. But it also goes well beyond that, helping provide the kind of understanding that can help you come up with something another interviewer might have missed, to get your anticipated questions answered but to stay tuned for those comments that lead to new questions. As for not covering e-interviews...gosh, why don't we just automate the whole process, people?

BTW, I'm a female and don't remember anything in here about eyelash-batting. Maybe I'll have to re-read it. What I do remember is that I felt like he wrote for me, whoever I was, and that he gave me a strong understanding on which I could build. Since reading this book, I have conducted hundreds of interviews, not only for journalistic purposes, but also in therapeutic and research contexts. The greatest compliment I got, shortly after starting out, was from a much more experienced writer at our newsweekly, who overheard one of my phone interviews. He said "It sounded like you were having a conversation, with someone you've known a while."

Amazon.com Review
This is the classic cookbook, in its entirety—all 524 recipes.

“Anyone can cook in the French manner anywhere,” wrote Mesdames Beck, Bertholle, and Child, “with the right instruction.” And here is the book that, for more than forty years, has been teaching Americans how.

Mastering the Art of French Cooking is for both seasoned cooks and beginners who love good food and long to reproduce at home the savory delights of the classic cuisine, from the historic Gallic masterpieces to the seemingly artless perfection of a dish of spring-green peas. This beautiful book, with more than 100 instructive illustrations, is revolutionary in its approach because:

• it leads the cook infallibly from the buying and handling of raw ingredients, through each essential step of a recipe, to the final creation of a delicate confection;

• it breaks down the classic cuisine into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of recipes; the focus is on key recipes that form the backbone of French cookery and lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations—bound to increase anyone’s culinary repertoire;

• it adapts classical techniques, wherever possible, to modern American conveniences;

• it shows Americans how to buy products, from any supermarket in the United States, that reproduce the exact taste and texture of the French ingredients, for example, equivalent meat cuts, the right beans for a cassoulet, or the appropriate fish and seafood for a bouillabaisse;

• it offers suggestions for just the right accompaniment to each dish, including proper wines. Since there has never been a book as instructive and as workable as Mastering the Art of French Cooking, the techniques learned here can be applied to recipes in all other French cookbooks, making them infinitely more usable. In compiling the secrets of famous cordons bleus, the authors have produced a magnificent volume that is sure to find the place of honor in every kitchen in America. Bon appétit!

Julie & Julia is now a major motion picture (releasing in August 2009) starring Meryl Streep as Julia Child. It is partially based on Julia Child's memoir, My Life in France. Enjoy these images from the film, and click the thumbnails to see larger images.

Review
"Has it really been 40 years since Julia Child rescued Americans from dreary casseroles? This reissue, clad in a handsome red jacket, is what a cookbook should be: packed with sumptuous recipes, detailed instructions, and precise line drawings. Some of the instructions look daunting, but as Child herself says in the introduction, 'If you can read, you can cook.'"

A necessary, superb finish to the complete work
By B. Marold
Rarely are we able to say with certainty that a book is at the top of its subject in regard and quality. This book, the continuation of `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' by Julia Child and Simone Beck is certainly in that most unique position among cookbooks written in English and published in the United States.
This volume is truly a simple extension of the material in the original work, which was recently published in a 40th anniversary edition by its publisher, Alfred E. Knopf and its principle author, Julia Child. As told in Ms. Child's autobiography, the original manuscript brought to Judith Jones at Knopf ran to over a thousand printed pages. About two fifths of that material was put to the side and most of it appears in this second volume. All this means is that you are unlikely to really have a full coverage of the subject of French Cooking as intended by the authors unless you have both volumes.
The first chapter has a clear sign that this volume rounds out the work in that it gives soups a much more thorough coverage than the first volume. Most importantly, it includes recipes for that quintessential French dish, bouillabaisse. To complement this subject is coverage of seafood such as a tour of the anatomy of a lobster that would put seafood specialist cookbooks to shame.
The biggest single addition to the subject in this book is its coverage of baking and pastry. Here is one place where the book may be seen to diverge from its focus of the French housewife's cooking practice. As the book states clearly in the first chapter, practically no baking is done at home, since there is a Boulangerie on every street corner. I generally find the level of detail on baking in cookbooks specializing on savory dishes to be much too light to give the reader an adequate appreciation of the subject. This book covers baking with a level of detail which would make most baking book authors blush. A sign of this deep, quality coverage is the diagrams used to illustrate baking techniques. The line drawings typically succeed where photographs do not in that they can be easily incorporated into the text and the drawing can eliminate extraneous detail and show the reader only what is important in understanding the technique. The section on making classic French bread ends with a `self-criticism' section we may nowadays call a debugging section. It lists several different things that may go wrong with your product, and how to fix them. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in only baking, let alone the rest of us.
The quality of presentation continues with the coverage of pastry. Some books on pastry give one pie dough. Some good books on pastry may give three or four. This book gives eight, with a clear indication of the differences in when to use the various doughs. Some books on pastry describe how to make puff pastry. This book gives a really complete explanation, with abundant diagrams. I suspect that very few people want to make their own puff pastry, but anyone who uses store-bought pastry will benefit from knowing how it is made. This section is worth five different expositions on the subject on the Food Network rolled into one.
Another major subject untouched in the original volume is the long chapter on Charcuterie. That is, the techniques needed to make sausages, salted pork and goose, pates, and terrines. Like the description of puff pastry, this chapter contains a lot you may never need, but then again, I am a great believer in serendipity. You never know where you may hit upon an idea to add interest to you cooking practice. The simplest product you can garner from these techniques is the method for making breakfast sausage, which needs no casing. The subject really wakes up when you realize that the subject arose as a method for preserving meats, just like canning and pickling were developed to preserve fruits and vegetables. If economy and the old hippie / whole earth catalogue ethic are your thing, this is something you will want to check out. And, I have seen this subject covered in recent books such as Paul Bertolli's `Cooking by Hand', and this book's coverage of the material is more useful.
Another gem in this book is the coverage of desserts, including frozen desserts, custards, shortcake, meringue, charlottes, and on and on and on. The guidance on novel uses of puff pastry has probably been a source for more TV shows on the subject than you can count on your fingers. The recipe for leftover pastry dough is just another indication of how practical the material in this book can be.
The appendices contain `stuff' that virtually no other cookbooks touch. One contains a cross listing of recipes for meat and vegetable stuffings. I did not have enough room in my review of volume one to cite the quality of the material on kitchen equipment. As both books have been updated several times since the early sixties, both contain modern tools such as the food processor and the latest heavy-duty mixer attachments. Aside from being as complete a catalogue of hand tools I have ever seen, I find the presentation done with the kind of good humor which was the hallmark of Julia Child's PBS shows.
The last major feature of this volume is a two-color index that covers both volumes. Please be warned. These books have neither simple cooking nor low calorie dishes. The object of this style of cooking was to make the very best of inexpensive ingredients.
Each page offers more reasons to be impressed by this work. Any true foodie should be ashamed if they do not own and read these volumes.

Most Important Cookbook of the Last 50 Years. Period.
By B. Marold
Rarely are we able to say with certainty that a book is at the top of its subject in regard and quality. This book, `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' by Julia Child, Louisette Bertholle, and Simone Beck is certainly in that most unique position among cookbooks written in English and published in the United States.
With Julia Child's celebrity arising from her long series of TV cooking shows on PBS, it may be easy to forget how Ms. Child rose to a position with the authority that gave her the cachet to do these shows in the first place. This book is the foundation of that cachet and the basis of Ms. Child's influence with an entire generation of amateur and professional chefs.
It may also be easy to forget that this book has three authors and not just one. The three began as instructors in a school of French cooking, `Les Ecole des Trois Gourmandes' operating in Paris in the 1950's. And, it was from their experience with this school that led them to write this book. To be fair, Julia Child originated a majority of the culinary content and contributed almost all of the grunt work with her editors and publisher to get the book published.
The influence of this book cannot be underestimated. It has been written that the style of recipe writing even influenced James Beard, the leading American culinary authority at the time, to change his style of writing in a major cookbook on which he was working when `...French Cooking' was published. Many major American celebrity experts in culinary matters have cited Child and this book as a major influence. Not the least of these is Martha Stewart and Ina Garten. It is interesting that these first to come to mind are not professional chefs, but caterers and teachers of the household cook. Child was not necessarily teaching `haute cuisine', she was teaching what has been named `la cuisine Bourgeoise' or the cooking of the housewife and, to some extent, the cooking of the bistro and brasserie, not the one or two or three star restaurant.
The table of contents follows a very familiar and very comfortable outline, with major chapters covering Soups, Sauces, Eggs, Entrees and Luncheon Dishes, Fish, Poultry, Meat, Vegetables, Cold Buffet, and Deserts and Cakes. The table of contents does not itemize every recipe, but it does break topics down so that one can come very close to a type of preparation you wish from the table of contents. One of the very attractive schemas used to organize recipes in this book is to take a general topic such as Roast Chicken and give not one, but many different variations on this basic method. Under Roast Chicken, for example, you see Spit-roasted Chicken, Roast Chicken Basted with Cream, Roast Chicken Steeped with Port Wine, Roast Squab Chickens with Chicken Liver Canapes, Casserole-roasted Chicken with Tarragon and Casserole-roasted Chicken with Bacon. Thus, the book is not only a tutorial of techniques, it is also a work of taxonomy, giving one a picture of the whole range of variations possible to a basic technique.
The book goes far beyond being a simple collection of recipes in many other ways without straying from the culinary material. Unlike books combining regional recipes with anecdotal memoirs, this book is all business. Heading the recipes is a wealth of general knowledge on cooking variables such as weights versus cooking time and conditions. Headnotes also include general techniques on, for example, how to truss a chicken (with drawings) and many deep observations on professional technique. The notes on roasting chicken instructing one to attend to all the senses in watching and listening to the cooking meat in order to obtain the very best results. This may have easily come from the pen of Wolfgang Puck or Mario Batali.
The individual recipe writing is detailed in the extreme, and recipes typically run to two to three times as long as you may see in `The Joy of Cooking' or `James Beard's American Cookery'. The recipes are also very `modular'. A single recipe may actually require the cooking of two or three component preparations. This is not an invention of Julia Child. I believe she has captured here an essential characteristic of French culinary tradition. The most common of these advance preparations is a stock. More complicated examples are to make a potato salad, a dish in itself, as a component to a Salade Nicoise. What Child may have originated, at least to the world of American cookbook writing, is the notion of a Master Recipe, where many different dishes are presented as variations on a basic preparation. This notion has been used and misused for decades.
This book has become so important in its field that it seems almost irreverent to question the quality of the recipes. I can only say that I have prepared several dishes from these pages, and have always produced a tasty dish and learned something new with each experience. While there are other excellent introductions to French Cooking such as Madeline Kamman's `The New Making of a Chef', one simply cannot go wrong by using this book as ones entree into cooking in general and French cooking in particular.
The more I read other cooking authorities' writing, the more I respect the work of Julia Child and company. Observations on technique that went right over my head two years ago are now revealed as signs of a deep insight into cooking technique.
As large as the book is, the material presented to Knopf in 1961 was actually much larger and the second volume of the book is largely material created for the original writing. To get a reasonably complete picture of French Cookery, do get both volumes at the same time.
A true classic with both simple and advanced techniques. A superb introduction for someone who is just beginning an interest in food.

"If you're afraid of butter, as many people are nowadays, just put in cream!"
By Jesse Kornbluth
The movie "Julie & Julia" is built around the astonishing idea that a fan of "Mastering The Art of French Cooking, Volume One" would cook her way through the book's almost-600 recipes in a single year. I've been using this book for three decades and I've only made a fraction of the recipes. But I've made that fraction so many times that the pages fall open to my favorite recipes.

The other way to identify my favorites? Greasy pages. Makes sense --- Child knew, when Michael Pollan and Nina Planck were still in their cribs, that it wasn't real food that kills you, it's grotesque American portions. As Child gaily told her television audience, "If you're afraid of butter, as many people are nowadays, just put in cream!"

Such bluntness was her nature --- and her charm. She came from money and privilege; the challenge of her life was to find something worth committing herself to. First came Paul Child. Then, at 37, came the Cordon Bleu cooking school in Paris. And then, through a bit of luck, came an opportunity to work with Simone Beck on a French cookbook for Americans. As she tells the story in My Life in France, that book took almost a decade.

Judith Jones was the first American editor to read the manuscript. She flipped: "I pored over the recipe for a beef stew and learned the right cuts of meat for braising, the correct fat to use (one that would not burn), the importance of drying the meat and browning it in batches, the secret of the herb bouquet, the value of sautéing the garnish of onions and mushrooms separately. I ran home to make the recipe --- and my first bite told me that I had finally produced an authentic French boeuf bourguignon --- as good as one I could get in Paris. This, I was convinced, was a revolutionary cookbook, and if I was so smitten, certainly others would be."

Quality mattered. So did timing. "Mastering The Art of French Cooking, Volume One" was published in 1961. In the White House was a President with a wife who loved France. Air travel was replacing ocean liners --- Americans in larger numbers were traveling to Europe. Frozen food and TV dinners were clogging the supermarkets; Child lobbied for accessible sophistication, and changed the way some of us ate.

And then there was multi-media. WGBH, Boston's public TV station, invited Child to promote her book. The station had no studio kitchen, so she brought eggs, a whisk and a hot plate. On camera, she made an omelette, narrating the process with wit and confidence. A TV series soon followed --- she was Martha Stewart before there was Martha Stewart.

Actually, she was much more. Back then, cooking was not a respected profession. She showed that it was a discipline --- and an art. And she legitimized the home-gourmet. Was cooking a chore? Not after you'd seen Julia Child, amusing herself as she prepared dinner.

All these years later, I'm still charmed by Child's 13-page screed on omelettes. On the other hand, I never had much use for her pâtés or terrines, soufflés or sauces. Dessert still seems like overkill. And the seven recipes for kidney? Non-events. It's the classics that first appealed to me, and still do.

The Plantation Mistress: Woman's World in the Old South, by Catherine Clinton

This pioneering study of the much-mythologized Southern belle offers the first serious look at the lives of white women and their harsh and restricted place in the slave society before the Civil War. Drawing on the diaries, letters, and memoirs of hundreds of planter wives and daughters, Clinton sets before us in vivid detail the daily life of the plantation mistress and her ambiguous intermediary position in the hierarchy between slave and master.

"The Plantation Mistress challenges and reinterprets a host of issues related to the Old South. The result is a book that forces us to rethink some of our basic assumptions about two peculiar institutions -- the slave plantation and the nineteenth-century family. It approaches a familiar subject from a new angle, and as a result, permanently alters our understanding of the Old South and women's place in it.

Not as Scholarly as I had hoped
By A Customer
I read this book and found both good and bad points. First, I liked the writing style. The author kept my attention and had some interesting observations. Second, she used letters as primary source documents as the basis for the book.
The main problems I had with the book are that the author failed to write within a specific time frame and the book is one-sided. Ms. Clinton would make a statements about a women living in the one decade and then support the statement with a letter from a woman written fifty years later. Statistics based on sample groups also have the multiple year time gap problems. The time focus should be narrowed. I also believe that the author failed to find a "middle road." This book was too biased and obviously one-sided view for my taste. Granted, times were tough. But, the book had a continual "those poor, poor women" feel to it.
Overall, The Plantation Mistress was an interesting book. I personally just would never use it as a source for a history research project.

The Scarlett Myth Unveiled
By Connie Boone
Catherine Clinton successfully parts the heavy drapes of Tara to reveal the truth behind the Scarlett myth created from the chimera of charming belles and courtly balls in the antebellum south. In The Plantation Mistress, the author skillfully reconstructs the realities facing a restricted and repressed class of women who have been historically eulogized by Hollywood and the popular press for over 150 years. The premise is simple: the leisure status of the planter's lady is a fairy tale told to spruce up the Lost Cause image. "The planter's wife was in charge not merely of the mansion but the entire spectrum of domestic operations throughout the estate, from food and clothing to the physical and spiritual care of both her white family and her husband's slaves." (Pg. 18)
With a writing style that effectively holds the reader captive, Ms Clinton also douses the romantic candle glow in the bedchamber to shine a more accurate spotlight on the relationships of men and women in this complex and euphemistic society. By artfully weaving contemporary observations such as -- "John Bernard, a British traveler, commented concerning southern women: `The one thing I did not approve of was the juvenile period at which they bloomed and decayed." Pg. 61 -- into the narrative, the author sculpts a dimensional profile of both gender and marital dynamics. Ms Clinton demonstrates that the view from a `lady's pedestal' was tainted by a dark cloud of ennui and the dismal fog of slavery.
A rich trove of letters, diaries and plantation records supports Ms. Clinton's scholarly conclusions without interfering in the textual flow. She also manages the pace of the material with a precision that unfolds each element eloquently and efficiently. I could not put this enlightening book down, as it is more than a treatment of women in the south. It is also a compendium of thought provoking issues, which encompass the horror of slavery as well as the inequality for women in the North.
The highest compliment that I can pay is that The Plantation Mistress did not sate my curiosity, but instead expanded my curiosity to search more thoroughly the intriguing directions pointed out by Ms. Clinton. However, I am positive that the next time I watch Scarlett threaten Miz Ellen's portieres, I will applaud her tenacity for taking charge of her life instead of thinking `the green dress is coming'. The Plantation Mistress in fact convinces me that an energetic, intelligent woman like Scarlett had few options in the old South for achieving any goal except by using subterfuge and manipulation. After reading The Plantation Mistress I want to compliment Scarlett for her determination, instead of slapping her for being a selfish brat.

An honest description of the role of plantation mistresses
By Andrea P. Mckinney
I think the negative reviewers who discredit the book for being biased are, in fact, displaying their own prejudices. I have searched through the available literature on this subject, which is incredibly sparse, and this is the first book I have found that even attempted to portray these women's lives with any detail or realism. The author researched this topic as thoroughly as possible and obviously strives to present a balanced view. I cannot understand the complaint that the author jumps from one time period to another, as I found the book very easy to follow. I suspect that many readers are buying this book expecting a romantic fantasy of plantation life. If you really want to know what life was like for a plantation misress - read this book.

Amazon.com Review
Scholars say that the original Tao Te Ching is a poem. Like a poem, this version of the Tao Te Ching is not meant to be read in one breath from front to back, but is to be at intervals internalized and contemplated. Jane English's haunting black-and-white photos that undulate in and out on every page act as glycerin elixirs, helping the words slide into our souls for patient digestion. The photographs--of a glistening spider web, cloud-enveloped mountain tops, reflections on water, leaves in the sunlight--are as serenely lyrical as the ancient text, itself.

Review
"No one has done better in conveying Lao Tsu's simple and laconic style of writing, so as to produce an English version almost as suggestive of the many meanings intended." -- Alan Watts

Indescribably peaceful!
By Roger Guiditta
I was very thankful that this edition was available. The original addition I had more than 25 years ago opened my perspective and enabled me to understand life and interpret my experiences with a degree of wisdom that did not come to me from any other outside source. The artistic layout and photography are very much a part of the communication of the substance of the message.

Worth a think, worth a thought -
By Amazon Customer
More than happy to see an edition of Tao Te Ching that was my first exposure to the material. Great in contemplation unless you are allergic to paper-type books and absolutely need to read something that runs on electricity. I'm not entirely sure it has all ten thousand things, but it certainly must be close.

The Undefinable Tao Is a Wonderful Thing
By Todd Buster Paris
(4.25 Stars)
Here are 2 statements that sum up the difficulty in writing a review of the Tao Te Ching:
The Tao is forever undefined -
The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao -
This book is 81 chapters of Lao Tsu's teachings. It's an easy read. I read it in about an hour and I'm one of the slowest readers to ever read.
Lao Tsu's teachings are simple and complex - like the back of the jacket says - "...accept what is in front of you without wanting the situation to be other than it is. Study the natural order of things and work with it rather than against it..." - simple and complex.
This specific edition being the 25th anniversary edition has very pretty and captivating black and white photos that accompany each of the 81 chapters.
It's a good book - give Lao Tsu an hour of your time. Have a cup of tea with him.

A Very Easy Death (Pantheon Modern Writers Series), by Simone De Beauvoir

A Very Easy Death has long been considered one of Simone de Beauvoir’s masterpieces. The profoundly moving, day-by-day recounting of her mother’s death “shows the power of compassion when it is allied with acute intelligence” (The Sunday Telegraph).

Powerful, touching, and sometimes shocking, this is an end-of-life account that no reader is likely to forget.

Review

“This book is written with restrained emotion and a literalness, a faithfulness to fact, that is very moving coming from a woman whom we have known as dedicated to abstractions. This is a difficult book to read as it must have been a difficult book to write . . . Unsparing in its depiction of a human being in her inevitable encounter with extinction, it illustrates the general tragedy of the human condition through a particularized instance. A book of near despair, yet dignified.”

the Realm of Existentialism
By Katharena M. Eiermann
Think: dealing with Death and Dying of loved one

"For indeed, comparatively speaking, her death was an easy one. "Don't leave me in the power of the brutes.""

It all boils down to have an operation and perhaps live a bit longer or euthanatize and be done with it. The subject is death and dying is a main theme of Existentialism, as it deals with the individual and reality. Simone de Beauvoir's mother is 78 and lives alone -- by choice. She has broken the main femur (A bone of the leg situated between the pelvis and knee in human beings. It is the largest and strongest bone in the body. Also called thighbone.). While in the hospital, it is discovered that this is the least of her problems, as she has peritonitis, a blockage in her intestine, a tumor, cancer. She will surely die (almost immediately) without an operation. Simone must decide. Very well written, A Very Easy Death takes place over a 4 week period -- that is how long de Beauvoir's mother lived, after the operation -- cramming as much life and reality between the book covers as possible, without being sappy or tedious.

"I thought of all those who have no one to make that appeal: what agony it must be to feel oneself a defenceless thing, utterly at the mercy of indifferent doctors and over-worked nurses. No hand on the forehead when terror seizes them; no sedative as soon as pain begins to tear them; no lying prattle to fill the silence of the void."

This book is about as real as it gets! --Katharena Eiermann, 2006,, the Realm of Existentialism -- Presidential Hopeful

I LOVE MY MOMMY!
By jLow
The connection we have with our mothers is sacred. They are what brought us into this world, but the only thing that could separate us tighter is death. Our spirits and memories are ours to keep, but there is no longer any physical connection. In "A Very Easy Death", a relationship with a mother and daughter had gotten closer because of a death. In this death is what bonds the daughter to give full dedication and devotion to be with her mother. Unfortunately, the death that is connecting both daughter and mother is the death of her mother that is about to occur. Cancer is what is taking her mother away from her. While her mother is suffering and fighting against the cancer, the daughter is there by her side. She notices, "a full-blooded, spirited woman lived on inside her, but a stranger to herself, deformed and mutilated (Beauvoir 43)." Simone, the daughter, sees her full-hearted, spirited mother inside, but the cancer is the stranger of her body that is deforming and mutilating her. Although, Simone shows no suffering when she's around her mother, but she is indeed disturb when she's alone. Her mother is leaving her. Simone state "everyday had an irreplaceable value for her. And she was going to die. She did not know it: but I did. In her name, I revolted against it (Beauvoir 83)." Simone is spending precious time with her mother - spending valuable time, but the cancer is what is stopping her mother to notice it. The cancer has taken over her mother's life. This still does not stop Simone from being with her though. There is nowhere in doubt I'll leave my mother while she's miserable and suffering all at once. I cannot bare to think my mother actually leaving me, but it has to happen eventually. In "A Very Easy Death", Simone's mother demonstrates a role model on her own daughter and me. She displays a true role model that is fighting against her death. I enjoyed this novel dearly. It showed me that I should always keep that connection I have with my mother until the day "I" die.

Hype and Glory, by William Goldman

Top screenwriter and novelist William Goldman's Adventures in the Screen Trade was a trade paperback hit after a moderately successful hardcover run. Hype and Glory--his critically praised, controversial insider's look at both Cannes and the Miss America Pageant--promises to be an even more potent seller.

From Publishers Weekly
Goldman was a judge at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1989 and helped choose Miss America in September that same year. "With a witty storyteller's talents, he here describes these heady experiences," said PW . "His ruthlessly candid insider's report . . . is bound to incense the contestants and promoters."

Enjoyable
By A Customer
Goldman relates some funny anedotes in this book. That's mainly what it is, a bunch of anecdotes. He's ridiculously dramatic when relating his personal life, and his bleeding-heart-liberal moments are almost laughable in their (unintended) schmaltziness. And he is so opinionated about films, that, if you've seen the ones he's talking about, may scratch your head about the certaintly of his wrong-headed opinions. Despite those flaws, the book is very entertaining. And it inspired me to rent the movie he voted for the Cannes jury prize award (I won't say which one and give the surprise away), which, indeed, is a great film.

The writing in HYPE AND GLORY is sloppy beyond belief at times, but most of the anecdotes are amusing enough to keep you breezily turning the pages. For reading around the back yard this summer, this book should do the trick.

From Library Journal
Mark McCormack has done it again! The author of the best-selling What They Don't Teach You at the Harvard Business School (LJ 8/84) has written another book destined to become a best seller. McCormack identifies the essential principles he believes are necessary for success. As chief executive officer of IMG, a leading sports manage ment firm, McCormack draws upon a wealth of experience, his own as well as those of his clients, to illustrate how these principles might be correctly applied. Many of these recommendations are applicable to more wide ranging audiences than those found in the business world. A highly readable book that will soon be in much demand.
