Best book on Economic Development ever written
By Lancelot R. Fletcher
The title of this book is slightly misleading, because the thesis of the book is that cities play an essential role in the process of economic development. Although its anecdotal style gives this book a disarmingly unsystematic appearance, this is a profound book. It is easily one of the most important books written during the 20th century. Economic development is something about which conventional marginal utility economics has very little to say. The Economy of Cities, therefore, fills a kind of void. It stands to conventional economics in much the same position as quantum physics stands to classical physics.
A simply wonderful book.

Another Provocative Masterpiece
By R. Schultz
This book is almost as good as Jacobs' must-read classic, The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Whereas Death and Life deals more with how to foster vitality in individual city neighborhoods, this work deals with the broad importance of thriving urban areas. Here Jacobs gives the reader an understanding of how economically healthy and diverse urban areas are essential to creating healthy economies in general - and more than that, to ultimately creating a healthy global economy. Her ideas fly in the face of much conventional wisdom. But I think she proves the essence of her case with pages of compelling, reasoned argument.

Most reformers, many of whom start out with earnest good intentions, end up wreaking havoc and plunging their countries into tyranny because they attack their countries' economic problems from the wrong end. Most reformers in recent history, from Pancho Villa, through Stalin and Mao, down to current day missionaries - set out to "help" struggling economies by first digging into the dirt of the poorest rural areas. They assume that change must start in the agricultural sector. So they reapportion land; they attempt to introduce modern technology to subsistence farmers; they establish schools, clinics, and communal wells in the rural areas. But often, these efforts come to naught. Indeed they frequently backfire and leave area residents worse off than before.

A typical scenario of the type Jacobs cites - a volunteer worker sets up a well in a parched rural area of some Third World country. But soon after the volunteer leaves, a valve in the well breaks. And there is no way for local residents to get a replacement valve. There is no nearby urban industry to supply valves or any other replacement parts for anything. So the well stagnates, becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes and a hazard.

Jacobs illustrates why these good will projects so often fail. There is no surrounding urban industry to back them up, to supply all the quirky, often small but oh-so-necessary parts to rural endeavor. Urban areas are also necessary as markets for rural produce. Without recourse to diverse urban economies, virtually all rural areas will fail to thrive in the long run, no matter how much charitable reform is pumped into them.

Jacobs goes further. She illustrates how the very idea of agriculture, as well as most advances in agricultural technique likely STARTED in denser urban areas. This is the most controversial, frequently contested idea in her book. Most people are geared to dismiss urban areas as being devoid of "nature. But the reverse is actually true. There is often more flora, more planting activity, more wildlife and domestic animal husbandry, more agricultural cross-fertilization of all kinds going on in cities than in rural areas. But because the city is by definition "urban," people don't see it and continue to feel they must escape to rural areas in order to experience nature.

However, even if you are of this frame of mind, and if you therefore trip on Jacobs' early contentions about the primacy of cities - I urge you to keep reading. You may not end up being completely convinced, but you will come away with a new tool kit of ideas that you can apply in a myriad of ways as a citizen of the world.

Any politician who will have to make decisions touching on the national or global economy should definitely read this book. Everyone from well-intentioned celebrity reformers down to individuals who simply send a few dollars a month to Guatemalan waifs should read this book, and learn how they might redirect some of their future contributions into more sustainable projects. Every voter should read this book. It's a well-written, interesting book that gives insights into how an economy can develop and diversify into vitality. It suggests definite solutions. In short, it's a book for everyone.

Still relevant, could use a new edition
By Paula L. Craig
This book has some great insights but is getting a bit outdated. I thought the section on the origin of agriculture was fascinating stuff, but I'd like to know how Ms. Jacobs' theories square with recent research.

The comparison of Manchester and Birmingham was great. I think Ms. Jacobs is basically correct with her analysis of what it takes to make a vibrant, prosperous city. Her basic recommendations for city layout--small, short blocks, high concentrations of people walking, a mix of buildings of various types and ages--are very good. She is right on point with her criticism of urban renewal programs and freeways.

Ms. Jacobs' analysis of how business development occurs is fun to read and very relevant to today. She makes it very clear that rural towns that try to develop by attracting a local assembly plant or the like for a large company are barking up the wrong tree.

The book has some problems. Ms. Jacobs dismisses problems with resource depletion far too easily as the product of a stagnant economy. She also dismisses population growth, seeing it as a symptom of a growing economy, not a problem. There is of course some truth to this, but in my opinion migration is perfectly adequate to take care of local labor shortages. The side effects of nationwide and worldwide population growth are too severe to be treated lightly as Ms. Jacobs does.

Easter Island: The Mystery Solved, by Thor Heyerdahl

A thrilling, fully illustrated account of one of the greatest adventures by one of the 20th century’s most famous travelers, Thor Heyerdahl

Easter Island is one of the most remote places in the world and acclaimed archaeologist Thor Heyerdahl spent much of his life investigating the mystery of the island’s famed, ancient statues. Heyerdahl visited Easter Island in 1955 and 1956 as he tried to determine if the island had been originally colonized by people who sailed from South America across 2,000 miles of ocean. Returning to the island more than 30 years later, Heyerdahl investigated the ruins of the island’s unique monolithic human figures carved from rock, and experimented with techniques that could have allowed a pre-industrial culture to create and move such enormous figures. This reissue of a previously out-of-print classic is Heyerdahl’s unique history of the island, based on his own research, and an interpretation of the mystery of the island’s statues that presents an individual view of world history.

From Library Journal
The title of this book is somewhat redundant, for in 1955 Heyerdahl made his first trip to Easter Island and wrote Aku-Aku: The Secret of Easter Island ( LJ 9/1/58), a popular account of his excavation of the remote Pacific island with its now famous monumental stone statues. In this new book, the occasion for his return to Easter Island after 30 years, Heyerdahl tells the history of the island through the eyes of explorers and travelers, from its discovery by the Dutch in 1722, through Heyerdahl's latest visit in 1986, during which he and his staff resumed limited excavations, and aided by residents and their recall of ancient myths, resolved the puzzle of how the statues had "walked" from the quarries to their places on the island. This book emphasizes the validity of oral tradition in reconstructing the history of a culture and gives due respect to the Easter Islanders and their ancestors. Richly illustrated, it belongs in appropriate history and archaelogy collections.

This book is fantastic!
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
This book, published in 1989, is a distillation of Thor Heyerdahl’s research on Easter Island. It traces the history of Easter Island’s interaction with the outside world, from Roggeveen’s visit in 1722 up to the time of the book’s writing. Along the way, Mr. Heyerdahl builds his case that two peoples, one from South America and one from Polynesia populated Easter Island.

This book is fantastic! I am not entirely convinced of Mr. Heyerdahl’s case, but found his case compelling nonetheless. The book itself has many color pictures and maps, and is visually quite stunning. Now, not all of the book is about Mr. Heyerdahl’s proposed history, so if you are merely interested in Easter Island, then you will still enjoy this book. This is a great book, one that you should read!

From Library Journal
Born in 1956 to John Wayne and his third wife, Pilar, the author witnessed the passing of her father from movie star to American icon. Not surprisingly, he was a stern father--harder on his sons than his little girl. Unlike Christina Crawford's book about her mother, Joan, this is no Duke Dearest; Wayne comes off as a fully rounded person, ultimately held in a sympathetic light. There's little here that hasn't already been suggested in many Wayne bios, although the author does contest the claims made by her father's last personal secretary, Pat Stacy, that the two were open lovers.

I am a John Wayne fan and met Aissa in Winterset Iowa a couple years ago. This is a good book to read if you like to learn about celebrity lives and their families. I loved the pictures and all the great stories of being able to watch films get produced. Aissa is a lovely woman and wonderful writer and her dad would be very proud of her.

Her Father Would Be Proud....
By WIAPilot
From the time I was 10, while other pre-teen girls were obsessing over Bobby Sherman and David Cassidy, I was crazy about John Wayne -50 years my senior. This adoration carried over throughout high school and was so well known that one boy, trying to secure a date, only succeeded by impersonating John Wayne's familiar drawl and naming his jeep "The Duke." In Tucson, the whole town loved John Wayne and affectionately dubbed a Saturday Night midnight viewing of his earliest 1930's westerns - "The Worst of John Wayne." All my dates knew that I had to be home by 11:45 PM because this weekly event couldn't be missed. When he passed away, my friends sent sympathy cards to me and I truly mourned him.

For years, I avoided this book because I thought it would read like "Daddy Dearest." After reading it, I am only sorry that it took me so long to order it.

Aissa presents a candid and honest view of her famous father - through a daughter's eyes. She speaks with love and pride of her father and yet also addresses the downside of being a child of such a famous icon as well. Some of the ways that her father showed his love toward her were so incredibly sweet that I actually envied her childhood. And some of his strictness - especially towards his sons, was so indicative of how men in that era believed that "real men don't cry" and that it was their duty to instruct their sons to be "strong and silent."

In reading the book, it is so clear that John Wayne deeply loved his children - but Aissa was probably his favorite. I believe that her father showed his love the most by not always being the "nice guy," but by often being pretty strict. Parents can't always be friends with their kids during the teenage years because authority is questioned and undermined so much during those years, but it is obvious that John Wayne was strong and responsible and wanted to prepare Aissa with qualities that would carry her over to adulthood. The fact that Aissa became an attorney speaks volumes in that her father would be so immensely proud of her as this was an ambition of his as well.

In many ways, I identified with Aissa because my father was also "larger than life" as a commanding officer of the Green Berets. Ironically, he passed away from lung cancer 5 years before John Wayne. Although not famous, as children of an officer, we were required to present a façade and behave in a manner that would enhance my father's career so I understood to some degree the resentment that Aissa felt growing up. Likewise, I think that we all were somewhat mortified to be around our parents in the 70's. I also know what it is like to have such a vibrant force depart and how angry I felt because he had died and how lost our whole family felt for so many years afterwards. So this book was like reading part of my life. Aissa states that for so many years she was attracted to men like her father and I can see now why I idolized John Wayne.

The one area of the book that I questioned was John Wayne's relationship to his personal secretary, Pat Stacy. I remember the Barbara Walters interview and I am almost sure that he actually wiped a tear away during the interview and then stated that he had found a woman that he really loved. Also, Maureen O'Hara - one of the Duke's best friends, mentions in her book that John Wayne and Pat were in love and that she was glad that he could share his last years with a woman he loved. Likewise, he bought Pat a house right across the street from him as I think in his own mind John Wayne would not want to openly "live with" Pat during that era. It is understandable that Aissa did not want to see that her father was in love with another woman other than her mother. But I believe that John Wayne would want Aissa and Pat now to be friends because he loved them both so much. Personally, I believe that both Aissa and Pat wrote books about John Wayne, not to financially benefit from it, but rather because they felt they owed it to his fans, to themselves, and to John Wayne, himself.

Two things that I wish had been included in this book: Aissa did not mention that her father had been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, with the words " John Wayne - American." I think that this award must have meant so much to her father - almost more than all his other awards. Also, one of my favorite memories of her father was when he appeared on the hugely popular "Laugh-In." He wore this huge bunny suit and had a deadpanned expression and only John Wayne could have gotten away with this. It was hilarious and it just made me think so much more of him that he could be so vulnerable and confident enough to do this.

I have a great amount of respect for Aissa for writing this intimate and honest account of her father through her eyes. We all felt that the Duke "belonged" to us and I am sure that it wasn't easy to share her famous father with the world.

The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales, by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm, Padraic Colum (Introduction)

For almost two centuries, the stories of magic and myth gathered by the Brothers Grimm have been part of the way children—and adults—learn about the vagaries of the real world. Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow-White, Hänsel and Gretel, Little Red-Cap (a.k.a. Little Red Riding Hood), and Briar-Rose (a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty) are only a few of more than 200 enchanting characters included here. Lyrically translated and beautifully illustrated, the tales are presented just as Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm originally set them down: bold, primal, just frightening enough, and endlessly engaging.

Review
“Among the few indispensable, common-property books upon which Western culture can be founded . . . It will be a mistake if this volume is merely bought for a child; it should be, first and foremost, an educational ‘must’ for adults.”
–W. H. Auden, The New York Times

“Here it is, clear and fine and solid, beautifully and passionately illustrated, this one book–other than the Bible–that has truly made Western man.”
–P. L. Travers, The New Republic

“Everyone should possess and know Grimm’s Fairy Tales–one of the great books of the world–and no English-speaking person could do better than this edition.”
–Richard Adams, The New York Times Book Review

“[A] splendid edition, admirably illustrated.”
–Edmund Wilson, The New Yorker

Stunning
By Leah V
Originally I was between two leather bound editions, this edition and the Calla Edition. There were so many positive reviews for the Calla Edition that I began feeling swayed but ultimately I went ahead with purchasing this edition because it is the complete works of Grimms Fairy Tales whereas the Calla Edition is not the complete works. I'm not aware of how many tales are in the Calla Edition but this one contains over 200 tales.

For $16 I wasn't expecting it to be beautiful, I was mistaken. Between the thick leather cover, the owl gracing the inside cover, the gold pages and ribbon book mark, I was mesmerized. It is just so stunning and simple plus it will look marvelous on any book shelve.

Very much recommended: beautiful and stunning.

Tons of stories and a beautiful book
By Akiraana
A beautiful book especially for the price. I love that the intro includes some information on the brothers and short stories. There are 201 stories and 10 legends included in this book.

The book itself has gold pages, red and gold highlights on the front, embossing and a red ribbon bookmark.

Absolutely gorgeous, recommended for collectors and those who appreciate fine books
By Z Hayes
I'm a collector of beautifully-bound books and have been collecting the titles from Calla Editions over the last couple of years. I already have several copies of Grimm's Fairy Tales in different editions, and I could not resist Taschen's edition when I saw it here. Taschen's art books are really beautiful and of good quality, and when I received my copy of The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, I was mesmerized by the beauty of this edition.

Some reviewers have complained about the quality of binding. I have no such complaints as the edition I received was well-bound with no loosening of the binding. The book itself is bound in a purple cloth cover, contains two ribbon markers(one in pink and one in green),and the title of the book is embossed in gold-letters with a beautiful embossed illustration of Sleeping Beauty (on the front) and the castle (on the back).

This edition contains all-new translations of 27 fairy tales with reproduced artwork by the original illustrators of the various tales, dating from the 1820s to the 1950s. The book also contains an introduction by editor Noel Daniel titled "More Than Words Can Say: The Grimms' Enduring Legacy and the Art It Inspired." In his introduction, Daniel discusses several aspects of fairy tales, and there's lots of illustrations from older editions of fairy tales, as well as a gorgeous full-page illustration depicting Kay Nielsen's watercolor of "The Goose Girl".

This is followed by the actual fairy tales (with names of illustrators whose illustrations are depicted alongside the stories):
The Frog Prince (Walter Crane)
The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats (Heinrich Leutemann)
Little Brother and Little Sister (Fedor Flinzer)
Rapunzel (Otto Speckter)
Hansel and Gretel (Heinrich Merté)
The Fisherman and His Wife (Wanda Gág)
The Brave Little Tailor (Franz Wacik)
Cinderella (Hanns Anker)
Mother Holle (Herbert Leupin)
Little Red Riding Hood (Divica Landrová)
The Bremen Town Musicians (Rudolf Geifsler)
The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs (Gustaf Tenggren)
The Shoemaker and the Elves (George Cruikshank)
Tom Thumb's Travels (Oswald Sickert)
Sleeping Beauty (Herbert Leupin)
Snow White (Wanda Zeigner-Ebel)
Rumpelstiltskin (Kay Nielsen)
The Three Feathers (Kay Nielsen)
The Golden Goose (L. Leslie Brooke)
Jorinda and Joringel (Arthur Rackham)
The Goose Girl (Jessie Willcox Smith)
The Twelve Dancing Princesses (Kay Nielsen)
The Star Coins (Viktor P. Mohn)
Snow White and Rose Red (Gustaf Tenggren)
The Hare and the Hedgehog (Gustav Süs)
Puss in Boots (Herbert Leupin)
The Golden Key

The tales are followed by:
Artists' Biographies by the editor
Translator's Note & Note on the Original Tales
Index

These are timeless tales that will stand the test of time, and this beautiful Taschen edition is sure to enhance any collector's library.

Had one back in the 70's
By ericc
What everyone else about the Catalog is so true...it was earth shattering to have one, read it, and search out items one found it the Catalog (it's how I found a store in NYC that sold Earth shoes - and boots, too!) and why I went and bought a pair of each.

But, am I the only one to remember "Divine Right's Trip" with DR himself, his gf Estelle, and DR's microbus "Urge"? It co-starred "The Greek" whose mission in life was to forget his name. It also had a part where DR, Estelle, and Urge were camping and the guy next to them invited them to dinner and to watch tv. DR commented up watching "Wagon Train" on a tv with a 5 or 7 inch screen "I'm watching the world's smallest wagon train on the world's smallest prairie."

One time, in Cincinnati, DR was in a bathroom thinking (if you could call it that) about "Cincinnati" and how balanced it was. In his drug induced state he imagined himself wear some ex football coach's pants and shirt and wrote in the bathroom "Help, I am a balance freak wearing a dead football coach's pants." I must've written that a few hundred times in public bathrooms.

Now I just write "WORRYING" under the word STOP on stop signs.

Don't mourn, organize!

It was a joy to present this book to my son (now married with children of his own). It is in very good condition.
By Janice Tobergte
I bought The Last Whole Earth catalog when it was first published and read and reread it many times and I loved the poetry and many articles pertained to a time when I was little and my Great Grandmoter was alive on a farm in Missouri. One day it disappeared and I never found it again. My son also liked it and said he didn't know what happened to it. We used to talk about that catalog many times. When I saw it for sale as a collectors item, I could hardly believe it. Thre was one original that I could not afford but still another in collectors condition. I took a chance and bought it and gave it to my son (48 years oold now). When he opened it he was absoluely amazed. I also found out what happened to the one I bought for $5, years ago. He told me he read it so much it finally fell apart. He really loved it then and now as a collectors edition he was elated. He could hardly believe it. It is now at his home awaiting a proper wood and glass frame. It gave me joy to see his joy. Thank you from Janice great grandma now.

From Publishers Weekly
The literary faults and stylistic excesses that characterized The Icarus Agenda , The Gemini Contenders and other of Ludlum's works are present in his latest mammoth thriller, but fans will nonetheless cheer the return of his most popular character, David Webb, aka Jason Bourne, the assassin who never was. When the international terrorist known as Carlos the Jackal penetrates his civilian identity, Webb must again assume the Bourne persona to protect his wife and small children. In their renewed struggle, the two master assassins uncover the revived existence of Medusa, the sinister alliance that originally led to the establishment of the Bourne identity. In action that moves from the U.S. to Montserrat to Paris before concluding in Moscow, Bourne and his allies prove incredibly inept, barely escaping the Jackal's traps and failing in their repeated attempts to ambush him. The Ludlum trademarks are present: improbable bloodbaths, repetitive action, stilted and off-the-point conversations and--most annoying--the use of italicized words or entire paragraphs to simulate passion. This is formula writing that delivers even less than its meager promise.

A Stellar Finish for the Gospel According to St. Bourne
By Deon C. Mixon
I struggle to declare this final installment of Ludlum's masterful trilogy the best of them, but I will not hesitate to conclude that it was the most hilarious! Yup, the comedy was a plus towards the intertwining journeys of Jason's many foes and friends. It made the entire adventure less agonizing and more welcoming to plow through. This final arc of the famous chameleon was definitely a ride to wait for. With powerful storytelling, despite the overdrawn formula of intense detail, fulfilling action, and a plethora of surprises to verify those, unfortunately, already verified gaps, this ultimatum, the gospel according to St. Bourne, was still a stellar finale.

The Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: The Man Who Was Sherlock Holmes, by John Dickson Carr

This vivid biography, written by John Dickson Carr, a giant in the field of mystery fiction, benefits from his full access to the archives of the eminent Sir Arthur Conan Doyle—to his notebooks, diaries, press clippings, and voluminous correspondence. Like his creation Sherlock Holmes, Doyle had "a horror of destroying documents," and until his death in 1930, they accumulated to vast amount throughout his house at Windlesham. They provide many of the words incorporated by Carr in this lively portrayal of Doyle's forays into politics, his infatuation with spiritualism, his literary ambitions, and dinner-table conversations with friends like H. G. Wells and King Edward VII. Carr, then, in a sense collaborates with his subject to unfold a colorful narrative that takes Doyle from his school days at Stonyhurst to Edinburgh University and a medical practice at Southsea, where he conceived the idea of wedding scientific study to criminal investigation in the fictive person of Sherlock Holmes. It also explores the private tragedy of Doyle's first marriage and long-delayed second as it follows him into the arena of public activity, propaganda, and literary output that would win him not only celebrity but also knighthood. 8 pages of black-and-white photographs are featured.

It's Okay
By Book Lover
I knew nothing about Doyle before reading this and there is a fair amount of useful information about the author's life. Unfortunately, it is not particularly well written. The author uses childish "but more about that later" transitions to create suspense. Also, Carr like many biographers falls in love with his subject. Sherlock Holmes stories are not the summum of English language literature. Carr vastly overates Doyle as a writer, but not as a man. This is a book that you should pick up at a used book sale for 50 cents.

Exuberant Victorian
By Mary E. Sibley
Some listings of biographical archives appear at the end of the book. Charles Doyle, the father, was by profession an architect. Charles Doyle liked fishing. Arthur was educated by the Jesuits at Stonyhurst. At age 15 he visited relatives in London and was a rabid sight-seer. He studied in Germany for one year. He went to medical school at the University of Edinburgh, living at home. It was 1876 when he began.

At holiday on the Isle of Arran in 1877 he met Dr. Joseph Bell. Bell used his powers of deduction to impress the students. Conan Doyle took his medical degree in 1881 and signed on to be a ship's physician on a voyage to the Gold Coast, the west coast of Africa. Arthur's London relatives were prepared to do him favors but they believed in the teachings of the Catholic Church and he did not. He decided to open a practice in Portsmouth. His mother and aunt supplied him with furniture.

In 1883 one of Arthur's stories was accepted by CORNHILL MAGAZINE. He joined the literary and scientific society. A commission from the Gresham Life Insurance Company helped his income. The more he saw of medical practice, the more he turned to writing. He learned that he could write fiction that readers would take for absolute truth. He worked by fits and starts. He married a Miss Hawkins. Her mother lived with the couple. Married life stimulated his mental powers.

A STUDY IN SCARLET as written in 1886. He sold the copyright for twenty five pounds. His favorite writers were Stevenson and Meredith. The book of his he prized was THE WHITE COMPANY. The contents/stories are wonderful.
By John Tolhurst
The dealer claimed that the book had a sewn binding, but it was what book binders call a "perfect" binding where single sheets or small signatures are glued to the back. In addition, the covers were not cloth, but paper embossed to look that way, over the cover boards. The contents/stories are wonderful.

Classic Private Detective Stories
By Acute Observer
The Big Sleep; Farewell, My Lovely; The High Window; The Lady in the Lake

Raymond Chandler first wrote short stories for the monthly magazines that featured Detective Stories. Some of his short stories were later expanded to create his novels. They feature his private detective "Philip Marlowe" (the name came from a 16th century author). Read the short stories to learn how some were expanded into novels.

"The Big Sleep"
Philip Marlowe is called to wealthy General Sternwood's estate to investigate the gambling debts of his youngest daughter. The husband of his older daughter had suddenly disappeared. Is there a connection? The story turns up blackmail, nude photos, drugs, and murder in this wealthy family. [If you read about the unsolved murder of William Desmond Taylor you can see how this true crime inspired parts of this story.]

"Farewell, My Lovely"
Philip Marlowe is looking for a missing husband on Central Avenue. He sees a big man go into "Florian's" place to look for his old girl friend Velma. There is a fight and a dead body. The police ask Marlowe to look into this case - as a favor. The investigation results in more dead bodies until that old girl friend is discovered. [The marriage of a rich man to a show girl happens today.]

"The High Window"
Philip Marlowe is called by a rich widow to recover property stolen by a member of her family. Her son married a nightclub singer against her wishes. The Brasher Doubloon is a very rare gold coin about the size of a half-dollar. Marlowe must find the missing daughter-in-law and also get the rare coin back. The police can't be involved because it's a family matter. [It was illegal to own gold coins then.]

"The Lady in the Lake"
Philip Marlowe is asked to locate a missing wife. His search takes him to a vacation home by a lake in the mountains. The caretaker's wife has gone missing the same day. A body is found in the lake! Later Marlowe finds the wife's old boyfriend is also found dead. Was there some scandal that involved a doctor's nurse? The lack of survivors means no story for the newspapers. [Note the use of mistaken identification.]

Psychotherapy East and West, by Alan W. Watts

What is the common ground between Western psychiatry and Eastern philosophy, and what has each to learn from the other? Alan Watts found a common principle that, intentionally or otherwise, seems to be used wherever therapy is trying to overcome man's false sense of himself as an isolated ego -- an ego that traps him in a perpetual flight from death and loneliness. In varying ways and degrees, both Eastern philosophy and Western psychotherapy engage the individual in experiments that vividly reveal the fallacy of this conception and give him a new feeling of identity.

His Best Work.
By Ross James Browne
Vastly underrated and tragically out of print, _Psychotherapy East and West_ is Alan Watts' greatest work, and is one of the greatest works of psychology/philosophy of the twentieth century written in English. This book is also an ideal introductory course to the psychology of Carl G. Jung. Anyone who wants to read Jung should read this first (even though it came later) because it encompasses all of Jungs key concepts in an ultra-concentrated yet remarkably readable form. That is not to say that Jung is unreadable, because he most certainly is a great, easily translatable writer. But Alan Watts had the advantage of writing in English, and for this reason I believe _Psychotherapy East and West_ is THE ULTIMATE introduction to psychology for the Anglo-American reader. It represents the new wave of fusion psychology/philosophy/religious Asian cusine. No longer should all these fields be separated. Alan Watts and Carl Jung together have succeeded in combining the fields of psychology, philosophy, theology, and anthropological mythology. This is the new wave of generalized spiritual enlightenment which is also unbiased, critical, sceptical and truthful. It has spawned such other great authors as Julian Jaynes and Terrance McKenna. The best thing about this new kind of psychotherapy is that it is not cold and pretentious with regard to religion, but is tolerant and advocating of any type of belief system which enhances people's well being and mental health. Because it is nevertheless rigorous in uncovering the truth, it resembles Eastern Buddhism. Keep in mind that Buddhism makes no firm and unverifiable claims regarding the existence of God or an afterlife; it is simply a stategy for living one's life in the most enjoyable way possible, and _Psychotherapy East and West_ does an excellent job in making this way of life accessable to Americans. This book is the ultimate alliance of belief, spirtuality, psychotherapy, and mental well-being on the one hand, and truthful, critical philosophy on the other. It does not wish to insulate people from spiritual crises and keep them suspended in naive belief, but introduces us to a new wave of spiritualism that is hardened by scepticism and impervious to doubt. While some philosophy might pride itself on debunking unverifiable beliefs, it does not provide a solution to man's broken and neurotic psychological condition due to his lost spirituality. _Psychotherapy East and West_, on the other hand, is respective of truth, critical and sceptical, yet provides firm answers as to how we can avoid the neuroses and depression that might result from an upending of our spiritual beliefs. Unconditionally recommended. One of my top five books of all time, of any genre.

Classic Comparison of Two Roads to One Destination
By Erika Borsos
The ultimate goal is freedom, self-expression, & authenticity in the world we occupy. Alan W. Watts compares the Chinese/Buddhist approach and modern Western psychological techniques for developing a clear consciousness and insight into behavior, life, and relationships. The psychological double-bind is examined via the roles and expectations of society. Buddhist techniques for liberation and Western psychological techniques are explored ... most telling is the discourse that one needs "to escape the therapist's trap" [p. 184, c.1961 Pantheon Books] plus, "social authority contains a contradiction from which natural authority is free, and self-contradiction so basic that its perpetuation must destroy society and drive men to madness". Yet, Watts acknowledges that separation from society, with emphasis on individual uniqueness, is to a great extent, a mistake. The more one explores human behavior, the discovery is made that the individual is connected with and part of the whole be it society, the world, or LIFE. The interconnectedness of everything becomes apparent. It is the relationship of patterns which makes a person a whole human being. This recognition of belonging, helps dissolve the boundaries of the ego and makes a person feel less trapped and free. The ultimate parodox is ... the individual obtains freedom, by the awakening that he/she belongs ... Classic Buddhist conundrums are viewed through the author's eyes. Emotional traps set by Western society are explored. Alan W. Watts provides an excellent discourse on the paths to liberation and the emotional ties which bind people into feeling limited, and unfulfilled as well as a methodology to escape the traps. cream of the practical zen/tao/buddhist/castaneda offerings
By A Customer
I have many books covering the eastern mental and behavioral teachings; taoist, buddhist, zen, meditation, including DT Suzuki, Watts, Trungpa, the Dhali Llama, Lao Tzu, Chuang Tzu, and have snaked through almost all of Castaneda's books. This particular book by Watts slams the topic down with intense clarity, with more power and direct, practical relevance than most books that cover eastern thought. It is intense, challenging, and Watts plows through relentlessly, viewing many cultural habits, and vindicating his central thesis with precision, humour and always good intentions. I have highlighted, re-read, dog-eared and referenced this book the most. Where Lao Tzu could seem overly refined and get vague, Watts turns the table and gets to the nitty gritty with powerful rewards, yet never losing the scope, the reflections, the principle and process that blend with the product. In addition to Edward De Bono and Carlos Castaneda arguing the same point, Watts here also gives intense support to the value and practical applications of HUMOUR in our lives. I love this freedom. If I died tomorrow, and someone wanted to know what my top 50 books list was, this one would be in the top 5.
