THE SDS History
By Alexander Hogan
This book is incredible, covering in intense detail SDS from it proto-foundations in the late 50's to its splintering into PLP and Weather underground factions in the early 70's. Nearly every angle of SDS, from its original split from its parent body, the League for Industrial Democracy to the 68 showdown is covered. Also this is a very fresh history, written soon after SDS died. Little analysis here, and Sale avoids making judgement on the merits of early SDS vs. late SDS. He isn't trying to score political points or make political justifications as many 60's histories do. For that, you should read Todd Gitlin. But for straight up intensely researched and documented history this is only real source. Someone needs to reprint this soon.

SDS History
By Jeffrey Leach
It quickly becomes apparent that this is the bible for anyone interested in the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). Clocking in at a whopping 700+ pages, Sale has exhaustively researched almost every aspect of this organization and turned that research into interesting and concise reading. His research on SDS encompasses books, the SDS archives in Wisconsin, interviews and letters with some of the movers and shakers in SDS, and even archives for the League of Industrial Democracy (SDS's parent organization). The book is divided into four sections: Reorganization, Reform, Resistance and Revolution. Within these divisions Sale creates chapters based on the seasons, such as Summer 1965 or Fall 1967. The book covers roughly 12 years, from 1960 to 1972 (the book was published in 1973). Sale still writes articles for such magazines as The Nation, as well as other books, one on Robert Fulton being his most recent.
SDS started out as SLID, or the Student League of Industrial Democracy, an arm of the LID mentioned above. LID was an Old Left organization made up of cautious anti-Communist liberals/socialists. Sale details every aspect of SDS; the formation of the group under the watchful eyes of Al Haber and Tom Hayden, the writing of the Port Huron Statement, the tensions between the intellectuals and actionists which resulted in the ERAP projects (and the failure of those projects), the infusion of new SDS members from mid-America which moved the power base from the East Coast and radicalized the movement. Sale continues his account all the way to the demise of SDS into two Communist factions: Weatherman and PL-SDS. Sale knows he's telling a long tale and constantly stops along the way for summaries and recaps of problems. The ominous appearance of sections on the Progressive Labor Party (PL) provides a separate timeline of this group until its infiltration and destruction of SDS in the later 1960's.
As useful as this history is, Sale does have his limitations. He rarely provides any look at the intellectual underpinnings of SDS, an aspect that is critical in understanding their ideas and some of their weaknesses. There are only a few mentions of C. Wright Mills, for example. Mills was critical to early SDS thought and should definitely have a place in any history of SDS (James Miller's book provides an intellectual history of SDS). Another problem is that Sale is writing so close to his subject. In 1973 Weather bombs are still going off and principal members of SDS are still protesting. Sale misses out on what the perspective of time can do for people. Finally, for a book so exhaustive and meticulous in its approach, there is no reprint of the Port Huron Statement to be found, not in the text or in an appendix, which I find very surprising.
If you are going to do any reading on SDS, let alone any research, you must read this book, and I recommend reading it before you read any other books on the topic. Unfortunately, it's out of print. I haven't seen a copy available anywhere ..., but a reprint could always happen at anytime. Highly Recommended.

1983 Vintage Books edition.
By cortezhill
Ever since its first appearance in 1925, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the hilarious saga of Lorelei Lee, "a professional lady" (the profession is gold-digging), has been recognised as an American classic. James Joyce, William Faulkner, H. L. Mencken and George Santayana were among its early fans. But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes, which followed in 1928, was instantly hailed "a masterpiece of comic literature." Here are the two in one volume, together with the author's 1963 introduction to a new edition of Blondes.

From Publishers Weekly
Aldrich has been a teacher, journalist and editor (Paris Review, Harper's, etc.)a refutation of cliches about the "idle rich." This accredited scion of the old-money set via his Rockefeller kin writes with great style and wit, making this history of privileged people delightful and entertaining. But there are shadowy reports here, too. Aldrich includes an account about his great-grandfather, a corrupt U.S. Senator from Rhode Island (1881-1911) and other tales of failed noblesse oblige. The positive accomplishments of many upper-class members, however, outweigh the actions of scoundrels, according to the author: absorbing principles taught at schools Aldrich groups as "St. Midas," those to-the-manor-born have been war heroes, contributors to the arts and sciences, and philanthropists. Emblematic is a funny and oddly touching story in which the author describes the "Dough Nuts" ("We all have money and we're all a little nuts") conferring to figure out ways to use their fortunes responsibly. 35,000 first printing.

From Library Journal
Aldrich's analysis of the monied class in the United States regrettably eschews social science documentation. His observations depend almost entirely on literature (F. Scott Fitzgerald figures prominently) and personal history (the author is a scion of the robber baron Aldriches of Rhode Island). The result is a casual, rambling, and often pretentious exercise in snobbery, some of it perhaps unwitting. The book covers proper schools, clubs, manners, fashions, old families, and distinctions between old and new money, such as "country clubs and yacht clubs do not have a very high standing in Old Money Society." Save your old, new, or just plain money for something with more class than this.Kenneth F. Kister, Pinellas Park P.L., Fla.

Wonderful......every American should read it.
By A Customer
Mr. Aldrich is an incredible thinker and writer. He objectively describes the various class structures in America and the values that accompany them. The book evinces that there is an inherent responsibility that goes along with financial success in this democratic society and what can result if there is an abrogation of that resonsibility. The book is written from a generous standpoint in that Mr. Aldrich genuinely shares himself with the reader. It is indeed "a gift" the "pietas" that Mr. Aldrich so eloquently describes.

All about Rationalization
By Percy Dovetonsils
I learned a lot, several times over, while reading this book. By several times over, I mean there is quite a bit of repetition of ideas and thoughts. But that being said, I found the concepts presented as interesting as well as disturbing. The authors main contention is that Old Money heirs have nothing to do with their lives, nothing to justify their work less lifestyle of luxury, and have created a rationalization of setting a high moral standard and set of values for everybody to look up to. In other words, we would all be eating cabbage and kielbasa and drinking beer endlessly in America if the Old Money crowd had not taught us to appreciate filet mignon and caviar and champagne. So that is their purpose that justifies all their machinations to avoid tax and other fiscal responsibility. Please!
I do not mean that this book is without interest, for it is written by a member of Old Money and his personal story will fascinate you. I believe too that it is an interesting look into rationalization that everyone does to some degree, from the adulterer to the bank robber to the robber baron to the heirs of Old Money.

One of the most important books of the last 25 ...
By Dallas Reader
One of the most important books of the last 25 years. It gives a proper historical perspective to both economic and political history in America. Perhaps out of fashion....but timeless lessons of "noblesse oblige."
There is wisdom in these pages that simply cannot be bought for any price.

A Treasury of Damon Runyon (Modern Library, No. 53), by Damon Runyon

The hilarious antics and shenanigans of Broadway guys and dolls, out-of-towners and folks back home, and many others - affectionately reported by one of America's favorite writers. Dust jacket notes: "This thoroughly enjoyable collection is almost a biography of Damon Runyon, the boy who grew up in the West, rode the rods, knew what the inside of jails was like, wrote sports, reported abroad, and became Mr. Broadway. Here are represented the wide range of his experiences and of his writing - early Westerns and sketches of 'folks back home' with vivid titles like The Wooing of Nosey Gillespie and At Dead Mule Crossing; or tales, like The Informal Execution of Soupbone Pew, picked up in the hobo jungles. From his days as a newspaper reporter and syndicated columnist come accounts like The Main Event, sports verse like A Handy Guy Like Sande, and affectionate sketches of 'ordinary'people like those of Joe and Ethel Turp or My Old Man. And, finally, from Runyon's great days as a Broadway chronicler, we have Hot Horse Herbie, Nicely Nicely, Gentleman George and their fantasic cronies, speaking again in these pages the peculiar vernacular now immortalized as Runyonese."

this is a broad introduction but my current favorite collection is Our Crowd
By Stephen R. Baker
I am quite the Charles Addams fan. This collection did not quite move me as I had hoped. Some of the paperback collections seem more enjoyable in the choices of inclusion. For a newbie, this is a broad introduction but my current favorite collection is Our Crowd.

What a treat!
By Karlis Streips
Close your eyes and try to imagine what the person who came up with the Addams Family looks like. Then look at the back cover of this book and see the kindly, twinkly-eyed person who's looking back at you and wonder which part of his brain went a little bit (but wonderfully) haywire to come up with such delights as the Addams Family standing on the roof to pour hot oil over Christmas carollers below (one of the most famous Charles Addams cartoons, and with good reason). Each and every one of the several hundred cartoons in this collection is a gem, even if you have to look hard for the punch line in some of them (and if some of them are there just for the beauty of the thing), and anyone who has kept up with cartoons in the New Yorker or anywhere else will find lots of panels that will bring back a memory or two. This collection is a priceless tribute to one of the true greats of the cartooning world.

From the Inside Flap
The first novel of Sartre's monumental Roads to Freedom series, The Age of Reason is set in 1938 and tells of Mathieu, a French professor of philosophy who is obsessed with the idea of freedom. Something like a French Dostoyevsky...
By Mark Nadja
Having already read *The Reprieve,* I have now finished two-thirds of Sartre's "Roads to Freedom" trilogy--that's over 800 pages--and I cannot wait to begin the third volume...that's how compelling I find these novels. It's difficult to explain their appeal. In *The Age of Reason,* a philosophy professor discovers his lover is pregnant and spends the next two days frantically trying to raise enough money for an abortion. His life zigzags haphazardly through a rich cast of characters whose stories and intertwined fates--complex, tragic, absurd--continue in the next volume.

What Sartre does is immerse us in the struggles of these characters as they each attempt to define and make sense of their lives...this struggle informed, of course, by the existential principles of Sartre's own philosophy. What Sartre does so well in *The Age of Reason* is to portray the psychological torment of men and women under even fairly ordinary circumstances. Here is the quiet drama of consciousness, the sufferings of daily life...at least as it is experienced by those who give it any thought.

What does it mean to be free--to have a life that means something? These are the questions that obsess Mathieu as he runs into one dead-end after another in his search for the abortion fee and at the same time wallows in a hopeless erotic obsession with a self-destructive young female student. All the distinctive trappings of a French existential novel are here--the drinking, the brooding, the café's, the jazz bars, the intellectual dissection of every act and motive, the relentless self-analysis...it's a riveting read if you don't require a lot of explosions, kidnappings, and sordid murders to entertain you.

Unlike his stylistic experimentation in *The Reprieve,* Sartre narrates *The Age of Reason* in a traditional, straightforward style, but it's no less briskly-paced; if anything, there is a higher pitch of emotional intensity in this novel and less ennui than in *The Reprieve.* Its not absolutely necessary to read *The Age of Reason* first, I didn't, but I would definitely recommend doing so, as it enriches vastly your understanding of the characters in the second book.

As I mentioned in my review of *The Reprieve,* I can hardly believe that the Sartre of *Being and Nothingness* fame was capable of writing in such a lively and entertaining manner, *Nausea* aside. So this series has so far come as one of the most pleasant literary surprises I've had in years. If the French, their philosophy, or existentialism appeal to you at all--or just a good novel about interesting characters facing the void within life--then I'd unreservedly recommend you take a look at *The Age of Reason.*

An Uneducated Opinion
By Thomas H. Lazo
I feel out of my league reading the thoughtful and well-informed reviews provided for this novel, but still desire to add my own thoughts. I read this first when I was 18, and I do not purport to have any great knowledge of the philosophy of Sartre. It is several years later and over the course of my college career I have picked it up time and again to read a chapter or two.

I am unsure of whether or not this book is a mere front for Sartre's philosophy--I do know it is a sort of fictional application of Being and Nothingness--but what continues to drive me back to this book is the sheer power of the narrative. Only in Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man have I found such an encyclopedic representation of human struggle and motivation in twentieth century literature.

While I am no true student of philosophy, I have no use for a thinker who cannot provide an accurate depiction of the real world. If they are not presenting reality properly, they are not observing it properly. Sartre seems to be a man with an immense mind and a remarkable pen. Although his conclusion grates with my own feelings about life, I respect his standpoint because the journey towards the conclusion portrayed a world with such real pain and such familiar people that I cannot help but be moved.

High-Minded Egoist in Domestic Crisis (and Astonishing Insect Metaphors)
By Ethan Cooper
Mathieu Delarue, a 34-year old philosophy professor, has led his life so that he has maintained complete freedom, which he defines as closing off no possibilities in his future. This makes philosophical sense to Mathieu, who wants his freedom in place, if and when he is required to perform a great act of conscience or begin a mission of self-fulfillment. It's 1938 and going to Spain to fight the Fascists has been tempting but not quite right. Meanwhile, Mathieu remains interested in the life of Gauguin, who, in his forties, left a Sunday-painter's life in France to become a great painter in Tahiti.

While Mathieu has lofty philosophical ideas, the effect of his freedom, he admits, has been to "dexterously construct an undistinguished but solid happiness upon the basis of inertia and to justify himself from time to time on the highest moral grounds." He is, in the words of other characters, a small-time government official, a solid member of the bourgeoisie, and a person whose relationship with Marcelle, his long-time girlfriend, is indistinguishable from a marriage.

Then, Marcelle becomes pregnant and Mathieu, who wastes his money drinking with students in bars, has to choose. Will there be an abortion, enabling Mathieu to preserve his so-called freedom? Or, will Mathieu marry Marcelle and basically recognize the nature of the prosaic life he has made?

Then, add to this dynamic an evil and manipulative friend who resents Mathieu's bogus sense of freedom, a childish female student who has come to represent freedom in Mathieu's mind, and a lack of money to pay for a safe abortion. The effect of this literary concoction is an absolutely great and riveting tale, where Mathieu comes to terms with his illusions and responsibilities. And, it has a surprise ending!

But say you don't like novels in which a protagonist confronts the nature and limits of his or her life? Then, read THE AGE OF REASON anyway, simply to enjoy Sartre's amazing writing. In this case, read with a ready eye for his numerous descriptions of light in Paris or for his amazing facility with similes and metaphors. You're only in Chapter 1, for example, when you read:

"Her mouth snapped out the last words: a varnished mauve-tinted mouth, like a crimson insect intent upon devouring that ashen visage."

"She collapsed on to his shoulder, sobbed a little, but she did not cry. It was all the she could allow herself: a rainless storm."

A great book and highly recommended.

Ernie Pyle's Writing Brings the Past to Life
By A. Lynch
"Ernie's America" was the second of three Ernie Pyle books I've read over the past couple months. I knew who he was, and saw his grave at Punchbowl cemetery, but had never read his writing. I am astounded at how real it is.

First, I read "Ernie Pyle's War" by James Tobin which is primarily a biography with some of his writings interspersed. Wanting to read more of his own words, I read "Ernie's America" which is a compilation of his Homefront writings from the 1930s and early 1940s. It's a wonderful glimpse into the past, all over the U.S., into people and places that no longer exist. It is a joy to read!

Finally, I read "Ernie's War" featuring his combat writings from North Africa, Italy, France and finally the Pacific. It is an incredibly vivid and real account.

I highly recommend Ernie Pyle's writing to anyone who wants to better understand the 1930s and 1940s. He brings it alive unlike any other writer I know. And, for those who lived during that time, Pyle is like an old friend. I shared the books with a Pearl Harbor survivor friend and he loved them. The volumes edited by David Nichols are excellent. They provide a good biographical essay and then for the most part, it's all Ernie's writing, with occasional notes from the editor for context. The five star reviews are more than warranted. Read Ernie, and you'll be adding your own five star review.

A Surprisingly Balanced Portrait
By Tom K.
David Nichols has done an outstanding job introducing and editing Ernie Pyle's 1930's newspaper travel columns. As a child growing up in small-town Ohio in the 1960's, I sensed this idealized concept of a lost American past, but had to piece it together to try to form the complete picture.

In addition to the expected glorification of small-town and rural life, Pyle describes the progress of the 1930's, when the late twentieth century coexisted with the nineteenth century in the United States. He describes economic growth, technological and industrial progress, new transportation, increased travel, better communications, new services, consumer goods, government solutions, parks, nature, regional cultures and preparation for global conflict.

On the other hand, Pyle provides a balanced portrait of life as it was really lived across the 48 states. There is rural and urban poverty, the struggle for existence, farming failures, the dust bowl, economic risks and failures, political corruption, tenements, wasted lives, deep prejudices, pollution, boom town squalor, substance abuse, urban anonymity and anomie, poor hygiene, industrial accidents, provincialism and small minds.

Pyle's stories are simply wonderful. My favorites include the decline of Put-in-Bay, Ohio as a vacation spot, the future of 5,000 population Las Vegas, the preferred use of the term "Spanish-American" in Laredo and Albuquerque, the role of Dr. George Washington Carver, the settling of Carmel, CA by rich dilettantes, the creation of the Allison Engine plant in Indianapolis and the preparation for war at Pearl Harbor.

The Nest Best Thing To A Time Machine
By M. G Watson
When I mention the name Ernie Pyle to people today, their usual reaction is "Who?" This is unfortunate, and a commentary on the ephemerality of fame, because there was a time when Ernie Pyle was as famous as any of the big-name American reporters you care to name today, and probably more deservedly so. Though he is best remembered (if he's remembered at all!) as a war correspondent, one who "brought the war home" to millions of Americans through the almost daily dispatches he sent from North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and later the Pacific, Pyle actually won initial renown as a syndicated travel reporter, and ERNIE'S AMERICA is a best-of collection of his domestic reportage during the Great Depression and the very first days of WW2.

The format is quite simple. Ernie simply drove from town to town, state to state (and territory to territory), crisscrossing the whole of the country, filing stories what he saw, who he spoke to, and the strange, funny, interesting and tragic things which happened to him on the way. Nothing and nobody were neglected: he drove through huge cities and ghost towns; he traveled to the wilds of Alaska and the tip of the pre-bridge Florida Keys; he talked to people of all races and all ages, all professions and trades, and all economic levels from the super-rich to the dirt-poor. Once in a while he'd encounter someone genuinely famous -- Booker T. Washington, for example -- but more commonly an unknown person with an absolutely fascinating life-story: a sea captain, a prospector, a prohibitionist, a cowboy, a fur-trapper, a barnstormer, a moonshine-maker, a former slave, and get it out of them. Over the years, and over thousands of columns, he unearthed a million fascinating details and the best of these have been sifted out and placed here for your reading pleasure. Together they form a kind of patchwork quilt image of the America of 80-odd years ago, and make for fascinating, amusing and often touching reading.

It's worth noting that Pyle's writing style is very much like he comes off in his reports: apple-pie American, which is to say plain and simple but also honest and enjoyable. He isn't corny or naive or sham-patriotic, and his isn't the most gifted prose-writer who ever picked up a pen, but when he tells a story, you tend to remember it. Indeed, I retained more memories of this book -- more clear and vivid mental imagery -- than I have from many others. Ernest Hemingway, a man known for carrying grudges legitimate and made-up, often referred to himself as "the Poor Man's Pyle" -- implying that Pyle was some kind of literary snob. Nothing could be further from the truth. Pyle was not only not a snob, he was exactly the opposite of one. The image left to me after reading this book is of a balding redheaded sunburned Hoosier in a Chevy with a cigarette in the corner of his mouth, a crumpled road map on his lap, and a half-eaten hamburger on the front seat. In other words, of a plain old American, jamming down Route 66.

Now, it's worth noting that America of 1935 - 1941 was obviously very different than that of today. The Civil War was still a living memory for the very old, Alaska and Hawaii were still territories, Arizona had only been a state for 20-odd years, and some West Coast towns were mere shadows of what they later became. Vast stretches of the country were scarcely inhabited. Drought had turned huge sections of the Middle West into a Dust Bowl, Jim Crow ruled the South, and most of the inventions and conveniences we take for granted today weren't even in the realm of science fiction back then. Yet what struck me was how little the essence of America has changed. Pyle's comments and observations on the politics of Washington, the thickness of government bureaucracy, anxiety over foreign wars, issues of poverty, inequality, immigration, racism and the economy don't seem dated, but rather timely. And on top of this, Pyle manages to convey through his reports something of the immensity and diversity of this huge country -- old mining camps in the Rockies, white shantytowns in the Deep South, trapper's cabins in Alaska, tomato stands in Hawaii, trim little Cape Cods in New England, and the enormous clamor of big cities everywhere. One can't help but feel, having read the book, that one has not only accompanied Ernie on his road trip across America, but actually traveled back in time to an era which is shockingly different and yet hauntingly the same.

Amazon.com Review
Subtitled A Book for Obsolete Children, this unusual item in the Seuss canon doesn't really belong among the children's books. Written to celebrate the nonsense master's 82nd birthday, it follows "you" (an elderly gent in a suit and white moustache) through a physical check-up in some fiendish geriatric clinic. You are measured, prodded, and subjected to all the medical indignities familiar and unfamiliar to the elderly. "You must see Dr. Pollen, our Allergy Whiz, who knows every sniffle and itch that there is... He will check your reactions to thumbtacks and glue, catcher's mitts, leaf mould, and cardigans too. Nasturtiums and marble cake, white and blue chalks, anthracite coal and the feathers of hawks." It's clear that the process is going to be long, but much shorter than the bill. The blurb on the back says it all: "Is this a children's book? Well... not immediately. You buy a copy for your child now and you give it to him on his 70th birthday." Actually, it would make an amusing gift for anyone over 40. --Richard Farr

Perfect Gift for Those Whose Social Life Is Visiting Doctors
By Donald Mitchell
I sometimes think that retirement is when you stop going to work full time so that you can go to doctors full time. Dr. Seuss seems to agree with that observation in this witty, beautifully illustrated book.
The book starts off like most Dr. Seuss books, beckoning you towards a far distant, wonderful land. In this case, the land is Fotta-fa-Zee where there's "no smelly bad traffic," you feel fine at 103, and your teeth and hair are kept strong by chewing nuts from the Tutt-a-Tutt Tree.
Then reality sets in. You've just been reading National Geographic about Fotta-fa-Zee while sitting in the Golden Years Clinic waiting for the physical that no one should ever have. The high point of this whole experience is talking with the fish in the aquarium as you wait, and wait, and wait for the next part of the exam. Naturally, no one will tell you anything about what they have learned from the tests. You have to see more doctors first, and take more tests.
One of my favorite parts is the eye exam near the beginning, where you get both a "eyesight and solvency test." You have to be able to see and pay for the exam to pass.
Pretty soon all of your clothes have been replaced with a gown, and you cannot easily escape even though that seems like the right thing to do. Each test seems worse than the last. The stress test adds stress as well as measuring it. You smell foods, and any that smell good are taken off your diet.
At some point, you make such an impression with your test results that they wheel you around in a wheelchair.
Pretty soon you've got so many prescriptions it takes two pages of poetry to cover all of the directions.
Before you can escape you have to fill out more forms so that the bills will be paid by your estate if you don't survive.
Dr. Seuss concludes with "you're in pretty good shape for the shape you are in." That's the most we can hope for from America's answer to afternoon tea for the Medicare set.
Having been through such check-ups myself and having a father whose retirement consists of keeping doctors in business at 84 (he calls it 21 for the 4th time), I can definitely appreciate the humor here. Hopefully, you will too.
I just wish we had stayed in Fotta-fa-Zee rather than the Doctor's office.
The satirical concept is great, but the poetry, whimsy, and illustrations make it all even better. It should cheer up anyone who spends a lot of time visiting doctors.
Banish your misconception stalls about aging and medical care with humor!

Seuss for Adults
By Philip Fultz
Yes, this really is a book for adults. It has page after page of insights about the clinic "Beckoner," and the waiting room fish, and your gratitude that you're, " . . . not quite as deaf as a post." For most of us, it has been far too long (since childhood?) since anyone read to us just to read to us, rather than pass along information. So for something very special, if you are over 50 or so, read YOU'RE ONLY OLD ONCE to your Significant Other. You'll probably end up hugging each other while you chuckle.

So entertaining for our "older" friends
By Kaye Knottingham(tting@gte.net)
I read this book while waiting for my husband at a Cardiologist's office. I work for a senior center, and my husband & I AREN'T getting younger. I love the way it recognizes some of the worries of elders & entertains. My copy will go to our senior center's library.

This was a great book.
By Victor
This was a great book... did not know much about Freud but this book made him more real and valuable. The sadness of misinterpretation is a universal problem in the telling of history.... no difference here... This book is worth the read...

For those who prefer truths to facts
By RWordplay
I should begin by saying I have the American first edition (1983), which is simply titled Freud & Man's Soul. The edition pictured above has the superfluous and misleading subtitle: An Important Re-Interpretation of Freudian Theory.

Superfluous, because it adds nothing; misleading, because rather than reinterpret "Freudian Theory," Bettelheim essays to illuminate it by correcting some terrible and suspect translations. For example, where Freud had once written: "Psychoanalysis is part of psychology which is dedicated to the science of the soul," this idea would be translated into English as: "Psychoanalysis is part of the mental science of psychology."

Bettelheim calls attention to, and discusses, quite a number of problematic translations, and he offers a number of alternative readings, so I won't list them here. What I found most interesting and necessary to rehabilatating Freud's reputation, and reasserting his relevance, is what else Bettelheim sets out to make clear.

First and foremost, Bettelheim reminds the reader that Freud is more a philosopher than a man of science. He is a humanist in the truest sense of the word: concerned, fundamentally, with what it means to be human. There is no debate that Freud held a tragic and pessimistic view of life. However, this perspective did not preclude the possibility that one could have a rich and satisfying life. The point of Freudian psychoanalysis was to enable men and women to "know themselves" and so develop a more textured, nuanced and satisfying understanding of human consciousness and its complexities.

Bettelheim sees at the root of the mistranslations the American psychoanalytic community's insistence that their practice be recognized as a medical specialty. (In fact, for a time they demanded only physicians be allowed to practice psycholoanalysis--a point of view completely at odds with Freud's notion of the discipline.) They held this position in spite of the fact that Freud's "discoveries" were first inspired by art and literature, and later by self analysis and ceaseless introspection.

Freud confirmed his opposition to the medical community's point of view, writing that unlike science, which aims at replicable results, and, ultimately, seeks to quantify and codify its findings, psychoanalysis seeks poetic, personal and thus profound truths. (A surprising admission by a man who was both a physican and a scientist.) If compelled to reduce Freud's mission to a single line, I would write, the man is concerned with truths not facts.

Bettelheim is unsparing in his critique of bad and/or lazy translations, especially as many of these translations enabled generations of psychologists, especially those of the Behaviorist and Developmental schools, to challenge and dismiss many of Freud's ideas as less than useful. Bettelheim is also dismissive of those who come to Freud ill-prepared to understand the man's metaphors.

If one is unfamiliar with the story of Eros and Psyche, one may easily confuse mind and soul. If one is not familiar with the story of Oedipus, one can not grasp the nuances that make Freud's use of the drama so valuable. If one can not repeat the tragedy of Narcissus, one can not truly understand the destructive impulses of Narcissism, let alone conceive of a "healthy narcissism."

Bettelheim makes clear that Freud's theories transcend mere usefulness. Freud, whose interests stretched from antiquity to the modern, sought to bring to light those human issues that have troubled the sleep of writers and philosophers and, in fact, all thoughtful persons, since Sophocles wrote Oedipus Rex. What's more, his interest in archeology enabled the man to conceive a world that could be reconstructed by broken bits and partially concealed objects. He also understood that life hidden from view should not be confused with illusion, let alone delusion. An understanding of archeology is key to understanding both Freud as a man and his conception of the unconscious and its workings.

Bettelheim makes clear that few of Freud's American peers possessed the same erudition, or immersed themselves to the same degree in the wisdom of poets and writers. They were largely men of science during a period when time was of the essence and human endeavors were being quantified at an accelerating pace. In this sense one could say Freud's biggest obstacle to wider acceptance was that he was a philospher in an age of emerging medical specialties. His peers wanted cures to unhealthy mental states, not investigations into them.

The inscription on the temple of Apollo at Delphi read, "Know Thyself." As Freud knew, this imperative was not easily understood and so the Oracle was often misinterpreted. Freud's great contribution to this ancient dilemma/riddle was knowing one can never thoroughly know oneself but if one hoped to gain any meaningful self-knowledge he or she could not remain on the surface or avoid the dark.

The epigram Bettelheim chose to open his book came from a letter Freud wrote to Jung. It reads, "Psychoanalysis is in essence a cure through love." I believe this book's true value is how it invites those interested in the difficult business of being human to reconsider Freud as a guide.

"No one here but Me, It, and Upper-Me..."
By Daniel J. Smitherman
In Freud and Man's Soul, Bettleheim discusses example after example of mistranslations of Freud's most important concepts, mistranslations that have served to cast psychoanalysis as an objective, exlusively clinical and quantitative science. Instead, Bettleheim argues with examples that Freud was profoundly motivated by his humanism, and strongly and explicitly opposed to a merely behavioral science of psychoanalysis. He argues that in fact the persistent and profound mistranslations of Freud by his American translators can be traced in part to the unconscious desire to avoid taking any of this profound science of the soul to heart. Bettleheim thus has saved Freud's legacy from the trash can of sterile behavioral theories of clinically-minded American psychoanalysis. Among Bettleheim's more helpful discussions is in his objection to the "Ego-Id-Superego" trinity, as it is translated into English. The use of the Latin forms is not only unnecessary, as Freud was using common German pronouns, but an obstacle to understanding what Freud meant most to convey: these are parts of us, of me, and not just abstract concepts describing others. Bettleheim offers the alternative "Me-It-Over(or Upper)Me" as consistent with Freud's intent, which was in part to involve our souls, our affections, in understanding ourselves. Reading Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams suggested to me that there was much more to Freud's thought than popular culture suggests; Bettleheim has made some sense of the pervasive distortion, and how we might undermine it. Now if only someone will re-translate everything Freud wrote...
