Well written, gripping. This offers the most believable explanation of the slide from "well intended" euthanasia into mass murder and genocide. Not a day goes by that I don't reflect on the lessons of this book!

Best book on the Holocaust

I read this book after devouring Gitta Sereny's wonderful biography on Nazi Armaments Minister, Albert Speer. This offering is superior to anything else on the Holocaust, bar none. Sereny spent many hours interviewing the Commandant of Treblinka, Franz Stangl. He reveals in dispassionate tones the horrors of this death camp: the subterfuge to confuse those arriving to the camp, the fake train station, the beautiful gardens... it's almost surreal to read this man's words. More disquieting is that Stangl appears to be rather normal, though obviously a psychopath since the concept of guilt is alien to him. He loved his wife, was a devoted father and was an attractive personality, yet he was involved in monstrous crimes.
Sereny also interviews Jews who survived Treblinka by working in the "clothes factory," and she also interviews some of the S.S. guards who presided over this horrific complex. But the heart and soul of the book is Stangl, whom she interviewed while he was in a German prison in 1972. When she asked him, "When you saw children about to be gassed, did you think of your own children?" Stangl vacantly looked away and said mutely, "I don't know."
This book should be required reading for those who deny the Holocaust or seek to make excuses for Nazi genocide. Sereny is a masterful writer and every word of this book is gripping. This is not a product to skim haphazardly, it's as engrossing as anything ever written about genocide in the 20th century. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

A book of understanding about the Holocaust

I have often wondered how the Holocaust could have taken place. How could millions of people have been killed on such a huge scale? In her book, Gitta Sereny helps to find some of the answers to that question. In 1971, she had the unique opportunity to interview Franz Stangl, one of the commanders of the Nazi extermination camps in Poland. The interviews took place over several weeks, and lasted 70 hours. The interviews form the basis of the book, and a deeper understanding of Franz Stangl and the Holocaust. From the book, we learn that evil does not appear all at once; but that it grows over a period of time; like a journey into an ever deepening darkness. In an almost step by step process, Franz Stangl was drawn deeper and deeper into the darkness, until he could become the commander of a place where 900,000 people were murdered. One of the most terrifying realizations from the book, is the thought of how easy it can be to descend into that darkness. It is something that could happen to so many of us, as we keep going on with our lives; even though we are doing things that we know in our hearts are wrong. By the end of the book, many illusions about the Holocaust have been stripped away, and Franz Stangl finally comes face to face with himself and his own personal responsibility. The moments that are described then, are some of the most haunting and memorable that I have ever read. The most important message from the book, is that we must take responsibility for our own actions; and for each other. This is one of the best books ever written about the Holocaust, and it is highly recommended.

Her syrupy, repetitious prescription for gaining control over life and uplifting the ordinary into restorative events is mostly commonsensical: i.e., making morning lists, using perfumed stationery, special china and bedding, finger bowls, massages, fresh produce, good lighting. But some readers will balk at bathing with citrus fruit slices, opening mail with a silver George III meat skewer or making the inside of the refrigerator "a feast for the eye" with flowers, and may be at a loss as to where they can purchase a "Fragrance on the Line" plastic disc of pure extract of perfume for insertion into a telephone mouthpiece. A Beautiful Book

This is a book I owned in the past but it got away from me and I wanted another copy. It's really beautifully written and parts of it have stuck with me over the years. It's not exactly a decorating book...more of a how-to for raising your standards around the home. Why do things the ordinary way or the tacky way when you could make just a little effort and be rewarded by beauty and joy? That's the whole idea of this book in a nutshell.

Get this one! Own it! Keep it always!

I first read this book in 1988, when I had been married only one year. The grace notes helped me realize that, even on a meager budget, I could love my surroundings. A friend and I went through the entire book and did every single thing we could afford to do - and it was a blast! I passed the book around to my mom, and sisters who each ended up with a "beautiful life" too. It's nearly twenty years later, and I still recommend this book to anyone who wants to add a little flair to every space in their life - even the inside of the fridge! I will have fun reading this to my daughters in the coming years. If I could, I'd thank Ms. Stoddard myself!

If you are housekeeping challenged read this book!

I bought this books years ago (sometime in the 90s) and it is one I cherish. It changed my view of housekeeping/homemaking from being a burden to being a gift to myself...growing up our housework was done in a marathon every saturday with plenty of spilt milk and drama, this book sparked the idea of doing a little routine maintenance everyday, sparing weekends for more pleasant pursuits...This is one of my favorite and most cherished books. A great gift for the housekeeping challenged who need a little direction and inspiration.

Before his death in 1922, Marcel Proust accomplished the monumental feat of recording Remembrance of Things Past, a fifteen-volume literary history, much of which was based upon his own adventures and minute observations. The Guermantes Way is an installation in this collection and recounts, among other things, his childhood in Combray and the relevance of grasping the importance of particular events and people from his past in his development as a writer. Although autobiographical, Proust employs suspense and the observation of minutiae to illustrate our own subjective existence.

This is a book to savor. Take time and smell the scent of France. It is a wonderful way to visit the world before technology and enjoy how people really enjoyed and interacted with others-their dress, mannerisms and habits. Turn off the T.V. and enjoy a book that is subtle and written without malice. p.s. You should probably start with Volume I.

An no holds barred examination of the aching hardship behind the decision to hang out at a ritzy party or relax on the seaside

As disconcerting as it can be to painstakingly grind one's way through a thousand pages of an extraordinarily dense novel and realize that you're only a third of the way through it, it actually does get easier once you pass that first volume (admittedly quite the hurdle) and move into the second volume. A combination of me slowly getting used to Proust's knotted sentence structures (seriously, they're not just like a snake attempting to eat themselves but like a snake going back in time to eat itself and its parents simultaneously) and the author dialing back on the diction ever so slightly leads to some level of comfort with the whole affair and the experience becomes a bit more immersive. Familiarity does help, as while he seems to have more characters introduced than I have friends on social media, a lot of characters make repeat appearances from the earlier volume and in fact find themselves deepened and brought into sharper focus as a result. The themes of time and memory remain much the same but with the definite sense of passing time it adds more poignancy to the proceedings, as if starts to seem as if telling the tale brings about its own costs. Instead of reading about the narrator going on and on about whatever sentimental philosophy that occurred to him at a particular time, there's a weight to it now, a grasping sense of trying to recapture something before it fades away entirely or slips through his fingers. The writing could hardly be called "feverish" but in some moments there's a hint of desperation, as if by not getting this down correctly he risk not only losing a vital part of himself, but of family and friends that are long gone already and drifting into oblivion even further by the second.

Still, it definitely takes some getting used to, even for veterans of the first volume. The narrator remains somewhat self-involved, going on and on at length about things that don't seem that consequentially proportional even to people who might have attached some importance to them (a lot of it centers around his grandmother). His focus on the little details of life as what makes our memories important has quite a bit of resonance (how many of us remember a departed family member fondly by recalling a particular quirk or habit?) but sometimes after ten pages of musing on such a topic you want to tell the fellow, enough already, we get it. For a good portion of both sections in this volume he seems to spend almost his entire time going from one party to another where the rich and the nobility mingle and say snarky things to each other while he stands around and records it all. Characters float in and out of the mix, sometimes people get on a train or a carriage and go to a different party where much the same things happen as at the party before and if you try to capture all the details in your head to keep it straight it's probably futile. If you read it purely for the sense of immersion then your subconscious seems to pick up on the minor details and eventually you start to get a feel for the material. This does run the risk of interpreting the book as a blurry parade of snooty people who think they're very witty and in some respect that's not far off the mark.

The parties seem to act as interstitial material for the sections that really connect. In "The Guermantes Way" it's those sections that deal with the narrator's friend Robert and his mistress and most of all the sequence that deals with the fading out and eventual demise of the narrator's grandmother. For once all the verbiage seems to be attuned to the right frequency and as he alternates between a rather sober description of someone dying by degrees with musings about the import of it all and his attempts to keep her fresh in his memory (which becomes a strand that colors the rest of the second volume) the book starts to take on an emotional rigor that it lacked a little bit before and from there it becomes a way into the world of the novel. Suddenly the characters start to make sense as people and it all starts to loosen up a bit, with the lightness and humor beginning to be contrasted nicely with the rather more serious concerns the book has. The first big change to the narrator's life beyond moving from one place to another starts to give the book some forward motion where before it floated in a haze of really specific memory. Time starts to blend and skip along and it becomes easier to follow the thread of the nested narrative flashbacks, as one memory sparks another and he just decides to follow to wherever it leads. The cumulative weight of all the text starts to have an effect, as in a scene where Swann shows up out of nowhere and he's noticeably older, you can definitely feel the passage of time (a scene featuring him at the very end winds up being almost unbearably poignant). And even when you don't share his fascinations about why the Guermantes family is just so darn awesome (they seem all right), his probing vigor helps to drive the narrative along. You may question his obsession with following Mme de Guermantes around all the time but at least she seems annoyed by it, which is an understandable reaction. The narrator's a pretty weird guy, in all honesty. One who never seems to work, either.

One thing that will probably help people attempting to get into this volume and the series as a whole is to read up on the Dreyfuss affair, even if it's just a brief summary of the particulars. A political scandal of the day that divided the thinking folk of the country much the way that we get so heated over who is going to win "American Idol", many of the conversations in this volume center around whether someone is pro- or anti-Dreyfuss, to the point where it impacts a lot of the relationships between the characters. The really short version is that Dreyfuss was framed by a military that needed to convict someone, who then compounded their goof once they realized it by doubling down and manufacturing evidence to make sure he was guilty. As a study in a series of boneheaded decisions it's fascinating, but to most people it's going to come across as a rather big and unnecessary mess. However it did get the French of the day all fired up and familiarizing yourself, while not essential (I made it most of the way through before getting a chance to read over the details), will go a long way toward giving some scenes a bit of extra context, mostly because everyone brings it up a lot.

"Cities of the Plain" winds up being probably the best volume so far, even if oftentimes people do things that don't make a whole lot of sense. If you have to summarize it in the style of the episode titling of a famous American TV show, it would be probably described as "The One Where Everyone is Gay". The wonderfully abrasive M de Charlus takes more prominence in the narrative (after a few memorable encounters in the previous volume) and when the narrator witnesses an encounter between him and another fellow that might involve some hanky-panky, his mind appears to be blown and the narration focuses for more time than seems reasonable on homosexuality, like he's just discovered something that no one has ever imagined before. But it winds up being a near obsession that takes us through the rest of the novel, as now Charlus' fairly open homosexuality seems unimaginably obvious to the narrator (and us) and leads to a lot of reflections on what it means to live almost secretly in society while not really hiding anything. It adds an extra edge to the proceedings, especially when the narrator seems to go over the edge slow motion and begins to suspect that literally every girl he knows outside his mother is a lesbian. In the manner of a middle school student discovering a textbook on anatomy and giggling over the naked pictures, he starts to see loves that dare not speak their name everywhere as girls just wanna have fun everywhere together without him.

It would be amusing if not for his growing suspicion that girlfriend Albertine is a lesbian as well, the best evidence of which is that she has friends who aren't him. The romance between the two of them is a large factor in this volume and livens up the scenes that aren't at endless parties, even as you can't figure out why the heck she is even with him since he seems horribly self-obsessed and mostly just orders her around all the time, afraid that if she has any free time she'll go start doing it with ladies. But everything is much sharper here, with even the parties taking on a more interesting cast despite Proust wanting to use characters to show off his research into things like the names of places. The sequences where the narrative basically stops so he can muse on memory and love and sleep become a beautiful thing in their own right, possessing a power that stands outside all the high society hijinks but are informed by them as well, each needing the other to hang together as a whole. It makes for a vivid experience and you find yourself taking delight in how both mean and needy Charlus is, how utterly pedantic some of the partygoers are, how Albertine seems to have an awful lot of patience. It all pays off in a rather baffling decision on the part of the narrator that somehow makes perfect sense in that way we tend to do things that feel completely emotional rational but in hindsight aren't too bright. It's memory manifesting as physical space, dig in so deeply that you can see the delicate claw marks as the narrator goes as far down as he can and finds that it isn't enough. On one level, yes, it's rich people a hundred years ago at parties barely disguising their disgust with each other, but on a whole other level it's an effort to grasp what you can feel yourself losing every day, a drain with such a palpable pull that the fight to pull it all back in such detail should leave a person gasping and spent. The fact that he's able to relay it all back from the edge is what makes it such a remarkable feat.

Continuing down the road.

Volume I of this Vintage series was a little bit overwhelming as a reading experience. Proust is dense, difficult and the diction takes quite a bit of getting used to. It was a relief for me that the reading experience got much easier by the time that I reached this volume. Nothing is going to leaven Remembrance or make it less dense, but if you make it as far as The Guermantes Way then you are bound to have come to some peace with the language.

The Guermantes Way and Cities of the Plain are full of both broad humor and deep sorrow. The treatment of the death of the Grandmother, particularly the way that she slowly retreats in dreams, is one of the most real and affecting sequences of its kind that I can remember in fiction. On the other hand, the comedy of manners at the society parties plays out like a kind of Belle Epoque Sex & the City. Proust skewers the foibles and fables of the relationships of the rich, and often left me chuckling to myself as I read.

The farther I go, the more I find these books to be one of the most memorable reading experiences of my life. Nothing in these books makes me lessen the recommendation that I read after reading Volume I. In fact, I find that my admiration is only increasing as I read.

If you can, try tackling Volume II as quickly as possible after finishing Volume I. It really helps a lot to treat Remembrance as a single book, rather than a series. It also avoids time re-learning the feeling of the Proust prose.

Russia's Shakespeare

Reads like Russia's Shakespeare! Am in awe of translators, especially Babette Deutsch!! (I know how difficult translation is, a fact abused by West's politicians). I LOVE the prose (historical anecdotes and social commentary of the Enlightenment)! I love also the poetic sagas, such as Evgene Onegin! As Tschaikovsky also did as well as Romeo & Juliette, enough to make great operas out of both stories. This volume is such a peaceful sanctuary, joyful of LIFE, from the "cruel and barbarous actions" of the World, of the West mainly, since Pushkin, especially again in Russia's first capital in 2014. So educated, refined and civilized a "rebel" is Pushkin shown to be.

Better than expected - sequels are often far worse than the original but the years Gent has lived show up in the writing. More maturity but the same moments of near farcical humor and grim terror. Well worth the read.

The Strangeness of Times Past

If you read thsi book at all, read it slowly and thoughtfully. Don't rush to assume that it reveals an anti-Catholic bias, as other reviewers have, and don't facilely dismiss the author's theses about long-term trends of illegitimacy, child abandonment, and infanticide being in lock-step with the structures of the Christian religion. Boswell is a very thorough scholar; before you challenge his conclusions, you'd better try the same research.

This is a study of oblation and the historical attitudes toward childhood that the practice of oblation exposes. An "oblate" is by definition any person who gives her/himself to the church, but in Boswell's sense an oblate was a child given or abandoned to the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages. The majority of oblates grew up in and became lifetime members of monastic communities. Conversely, in some cases, the majority of the inhabitants of monasteries had entered the Church as oblates, often as infants. Imagine! A Medieval monastery was not just a cloister of chanting monks or nuns. It was also an economic community, with only a select elite of chanters and scribes, and a larger population of workers and servants not in tonsured sanctity, and of all things, a throng of children! a nursery!

"Them that's got shall get," goes the old blues song. It was surely so in the case of oblates. Families who could donate resources - land especially, or money - along with their child could insure that child a place of status in the religious community. Infants left in the baptismal font would wind up as "lay brothers" tending the grange, milling, or manufacturing the products their monastery sold to outsiders.

Boswell discusses the reasons for oblation, the role of oblation in dealing with inheritance problems of land-owning families, the possibility that oblation was effectively a method of population control, and the eventual abuse and decline of the practice in later centuries. One of the striking effects of oblation was the frequency of handicapped and deformed persons in monastic settings, since imperfect children were routinely abandoned, killed, or given to the Church! Boswell also describes the conditions of life that oblates enjoyed or endured, and the mutual obligations between cloistered monks/nuns and their birth families, especially those of the nobility. Like the practices of money-lending, land-leasing, and endowment-after-death, oblation created linkages between the "religious" and the secular, of great importance in both directions. The Medieval monastery was not as isolated or insulated from the world as many of us imagine.

The monasteries of the Middle Ages were enormously important in the total social economy of the regions where they grew, to a degree that hugely differentiates their world from ours. This dense, challenging, unaccomodating book is perhaps one of the best introductions to the real Middle Ages precisely because it is unabashed in detailing those differences.

The Kindness of Strangers is a seminal work in family history. Though massively footnoted, it's not laborious reading. I've only hinted at the wealth of narrative and illustration it contains. I first encountered it when I was preparing a performance of a French liturgical drama, not the Play of Daniel but something similar. Can you guess the connection? Perhaps you'll need to read this book to understand the rebirth of drama in Europe. Five stars in Boswell's crown!

The fate of children

This book of Boswell's is a fascinating history of an previously unknown and essentially overlooked piece of history -- the situation for children, and what happened to them should they become orphaned or abandoned. Boswell's particular period and geographic centre is in Europe of Late Antiquity to the Renaissance.
Beginning by looking at the ideal of family structure and responsibilities in the Roman Empire (the dominant model throughout the western world), Boswell proceeds through time periods to the Renaissance, examining literary and legal documents for narrative stories of children and caretakers, and for the general policy of church and state organisations toward care or neglect of such. One such narrative as example will serve to illustrate:
'...in Fresne (The Ash Tree) a married woman has maliciously spread the tale that the birth of twins means that the mother has slept with two men, and when she herself then bears twins, she must face an opprobrium of her own creation. She contemplates killing one, but--significantly--her companions dissuade her from this, arguing that it would be a sin. Abandonment, however, was not...'
The woman gives a child to her maid who then leaves it in a church -- while the story turns out badly, it is not due to the abandonment, which was considered in this High Middle Ages tale quite natural and proper.
Boswell's antipathy toward the Catholic church shows forth a bit in his interpretation (which may nonetheless be valid) with statements such as: 'Christianity may well have increased the rate of abandonment, both by insisting more rigidly than any other moral system on the absolute necessity of procreative purpose in all human sexual acts, and by providing, through churches and monasteries, regular and relatively humane modes of abandoning infants nearly everywhere on the continent.'
A wonderful glimpse into a shadowy world at the sidelines of history, yet one of crucial importance for those of us who live in a 'family values' historical period. If we do not know our past, how can we be sure of our present?

Staggering Erudition

First, let me explain that I am not using this book in any class I teach(unlike the other 2 previous reviewers). I read this out of my own interest. Second, it is odd that only 2 prior reviews exist on this site, since I believe this to be an important book by the author of two well-known and controversial works about homosexuality and Christianity.
Third, allow me to rebut the negative review below. It is unclear how "college students" could fully evaluate Boswell's scholarship. While his numerous and lengthy footnotes can be a chore, his meticulous referencing of sources is admirable. And he quotes those sources in their ORIGINAL languages in many cases:Greek, Latin, Italian, Irish, Norse, Icelandic etc. How did the college students mentioned above possibly find his references "contradictory and wrong??"
In sum, this book is provocative and original. It would take scholars in the field of child history (granted a small field, if it indeed could be deemed one)an entire year to fully digest this tome and scrutinize its sources. Any thinking person interested in the evolution of human attitudes towards adoption, the protection and rearing of children, and child abuse MUST reckon with this marvelous work.

He gives considerable attention to intra-U.S. political struggles affecting nuclear armaments and, where information is available, he parallels conflict within the Kremlin. The narrative, although buttressed with notes, is written for a popular audience. The author has made some errors, albeit harmless ones. In treating the successive U.S. administrations, the author is evenhanded and nonpartisan, but he does level some strong, well-reasoned criticisms of presidents. Recommended. Jack W. This book from a half century ago changed the way I look at technology, and the flow of history. Ellul was a profound thinker whose many books have been formative in the development of my worldview. This is not a concise, easy-to-read starting point, but is worthy and though dated in some respects still speaks today.

Technique - the bedrock of the modern world

Before proceeding with this review, let me just say that no fewer than a hundred pages could be trimmed from its content without diluting its message at all. Many of the examples used in the book are extremely dated; while I think I'm fairly well read, I confess that I'm not really up on the vicissitudes and catfights of French academic sociology in the early 1960's (to give but one example). With that being said, this book is worth well worth the time spent reading its 436 pages.
This is undoubtedly one of the most important books of the twentieth century, and if you accept its thesis you won't be able to look at the political milieu in the same way ever again. (If you agree with it and it doesn't change the way you look at things, you haven't grasped its importance.) Most political theorists take ideology to be a central point from which "real world" consequences emanate. In other words, a Communist or libertarian ideology in practical use will produce a particular type society and individual divorced from the actual technical workings of the society. Liberals and conservatives both speak of things in such a manner as if ideology is the prima facie cause of existence - but as Ellul shows in painstaking detail, this is wrong. What almost everyone fails to grasp is the pernicious effect of technique (and its offspring, technology) on modern man.
Technique can loosely be defined as the entire mass of organization and technology that has maximum efficiency as its goal. Ellul shows that technique possesses an impetus all its own and exerts similar effects on human society no matter what the official ideology of the society in question is. Technique, with its never-ending quest for maximum efficiency, tends to slowly drown out human concerns as it progresses towards its ultimate goal. "...the further economic technique develops, the more it makes real the abstract concept of economic man." (p. 219) Technique does not confine itself merely to the realm of technical production, but infiltrates every aspect of human existence, and has no time for "inefficiencies" caused by loyalties to family, religion, race, or culture; a society of dumbed-down consumers is absolutely essential to the technological society, which must contain predictable "demographics" in order to ensure the necessary financial returns. "The only thing that matters technically is yield, production. This is the law of technique; this yield can only be obtained by the total mobilization of human beings, body and soul, and this implies the exploitation of all human psychic forces." (p. 324).
Ellul thoroughly shows that much of the difference in ideology between libertarians and socialists becomes largely irrelevant in the technological society (this is not to say that ideology is unimportant, but rather that technique proceeds with the same goals and effects.) This will doubtlessly please no one; liberals want to believe that they can have privacy and freedom despite a high degree of central planning, and libertarians want to believe that a society free of most regulation and control is possible in an advanced technological society. Libertarian fantasies seem especially irrelevant given the exigencies of a technological society; as Ellul notes, as technique progresses it simply cannot function without a high degree of complexity and regulation. "The modern state could no more be a state without techniques than a businessman could be a businessman without the telephone or the automobile... not only does it need techniques, but techniques need it. It is not a matter of chance, nor a matter of conscious will; rather, it is an urgency..." (p. 253-254). Can anyone really doubt Ellul here, especially seeing as how twenty-plus years of conservative promises to downsize government still result in more regulation and bureaucracy with every passing year? Planning, socialism, regulation, and control are the natural consequences of technique; an increasingly incestuous relationship between industry and the State is inevitable. "The state and technique - increasingly interrelated - are becoming the most important forces in the modern world; they buttress and reinforce each other in their aim to produce an apparently indestructible, total civilization." (p. 318).
This is not an optimistic book. Given that the nature of technique is one of a universal leveling of human cultures, needs, and desires (replacing real needs with false ones and the neighborhood restaurant with McDonalds), Ellul is certainly pessimistic. He does not propose any remedies for the Skinnerist nightmares of technique somehow leading to a Golden Age of humanity, where people will enjoy maximal freedom coupled with minimal want: "...we are struck by the incredible naivete of these scientists... they claim they will be in a position to develop certain collective desires, to constitute certain homogeneous social units out of aggregates of individuals, to forbid men to raise their children, and even to persuade them to renounce having any... at the same time, they speak of assuring the triumph of freedom and of the necessity of avoiding dictatorship... they seem incapable of grasping the contradiction involved, or of understanding that what they are proposing." (p. 434).

All-embracing technique is in fact the consciousness of the mechanized world.

This book is a highly significant and most important treatise on the cold, hard demonic presence that constitutes the role of technique in our world, and how it birthed "The Technological Society."
I would refrain from using such an easily miscontrued and loaded term as "demonic presence" to attempt to encapsulate what Ellul delineates in this book with consumate skill and near faultless powers of reason; but I think it pretty much fits the bill.
I would recommend Ellul's "Propaganda: The Formation of Men's Attitudes" to accompany this book as they dovetail superbly. Perhaps The Technological Society first as it paves the way for Propaganda; one can't exist without the other. And Robert Merton's translation of the former seemed to be more fluid and easier to digest then Kellen & Learner's version of Propaganda. It also introduces key concepts towards an understanding of Ellul's complex analysis of how men's attitudes are "formed."

The Technological Society is a book of immense insight, clarity of thought and mesmerising, profound passages on reality as it is shaped by technique. He presents a world inhabited by the "mass man," in a massified societal complex, which of necessity dictates techniques devoid of humanity to manage it effectively. Technique constitutes a kind of perfect intelligence, whose only point of reference is itself and whose focus is on the efficient integration of the soft, warm, and weak creatures that are mankind. Too wilful, chaotic and numerous are we that techniques of management; organization; regulation; health; information; etc, are inevitable to achieve a universal "best practice" for our own benefit. Or really for the interests of that thing known as society. This phenomenon even births techniques to soothe and placate the soul of man lacerated by the cold, efficient scalpel of the technical apparatus.

It is both the poison and the antidote.

These two quotes from the book will suggest something of Ellul's thought here:

Definition of technique-

"In our technological society, technique is the totality of methods rationally arrived at and having absolute efficiency (for a given state of development) in every field of human activity."

Machine and Technique-

"All-embracing technique is in fact the consciousness of the mechanized world.
Technique integrates everything. It avoids shock and sensational events. Man is not adapted to a world of steel , technique adapts him to it. It changes the arrangement of this blind world so that man can be a part of it without colliding with its rough edges, without the anguish of being delivered up to the inhuman. Technique thus provides a model, it specifies attitudes that are valid once and for all. The anixiety aroused in man is soothed by the consoling hum of a unified society."

The Characterology of Technique-

"Technique worships nothing, respects nothing. It has a single role: to strip off externals, to bring everything to light, and by rational use to transform everything into means. More than science, which limits itself to to explaining the 'how,' technique desacrilizes because it demonstrates (by evidence and not by reason, through use and not through books) that mystery does not exist. Science brings to the light of day everything that man had believed sacred. Technique takes possession of everything and enslaves it. The sacred cannot resist. Science penetrates to the great depths of the sea to photograph the unknown fish of the deep. Technique captures them, hauls them up to see if they are edible - but before they arrive on deck they burst. And why should technique not act thus? It is autonomous and recognises as barriers only the temporary limits of its action. In its eyes, this terrain, which is for the moment unknown but not mysterious, must be attacked. Far from being restrained by any scruples of anything sacred, technique constantly assails it. Everything which is not yet technique becomes so. It is driven onward by itself, by its character of self-augmentation. Technique denies mystery a priori. The mysterious is merely that which has not yet been technicized."

As has been noted by many, and addressed by Ellul in the forward to the book, his views seem essentially fatalistic, pessimistic, with no potential for escape from the virtual prison he presents here.
I view it far more as an essentially honest and unflinching record of his gaze at the world we live in, perhaps even more relevent now than when it was first published in 1954.
And it is also a challenge: what can we do to counter this presentation of a world encircled by an almost otherworldy phenomena that cares not for humankind?

What is technique? Why has it birthed a world of machines, of technology?
I believe that this book has a huge piece of the puzzle to answer those questions. Technique may seem a boon to our current state of civilization, a saviour of humanity even; this book may reveal that it has a secret undiagnosed pathology that results in it being mightily inimical to man.
