Little Saint, by Hannah Green

This is a book written in ecstasy.

In the early 1970s, the writer Hannah Green and her husband, Jack Wesley, an artist, came upon a village called Conques, curled like a conch shell in the mountains of south-central France. Entranced, they returned the next year, and the next, living there for months at a time, for more than twenty years. Hannah Green was attracted to the craggy landscape, the ancient language, the traditions of the region. Most of all, she felt herself drawn to the story of the little saint whose spirit fills the lives in that place.

In the fourth century, a girl--who becomes this book's "shining center"--had refused the demand of a Roman ruler to deny her faith; she was betrayed by her father and then beheaded. She was twelve years old.

Sainte Foy's remains came to be the "golden spark" that inspired a cult and inspired this American writer, a Protestant and a "stranger to saints," to devote the rest of her life to writing one book. To do so, Hannah Green had to improve her French to the point where she could translate original documents. She and her husband were soon accepted by the villagers--indeed, were loved by them. In time, Hannah began to sense that she was part of a centuries-long parade of pilgrims who came to Conques and were transformed.

Ostensibly the story of one day, the twenty-four hours described here have twenty centuries woven through them. The result is a rare work, in part history, biography, celebration, meditation, inspiration. It is an ode to joy, death, the earthy, and the spiritual. The prose spirals like a shell, poetic or plainsong. It is good-humored, yet it is also the memoir of intensely felt, almost painfully loving personal experience.

Written in a kind of rapture, Little Saint tells the story of a living presence, of her travels in time; of holy and healing places and characters; of fields of force and unexplained emanations; and of a saintly girl who makes jokes. It is a story as well of one woman, deeply American, who found in France while on holiday a place and a person for all time.

Amazon.com Review
As evidenced by her successful novel The Dead of the House, Hannah Green possessed an acute awareness of early adolescence, the time in life we call coming of age. It's no surprise that Green became entranced and eventually dedicated to a 12-year-old girl, who was known as Saint Foy. Betrayed by her father in 303 A.D., the French girl called Faith was tortured and beheaded for her refusal to worship the pagan goddess Diana and renounce her devotion to Christ.

Green narrates in the first person, recounting her reaction and fascination when she first traveled to Conques, France, and saw the golden statue of Saint Foy (with the girl's bones embedded in the statue's heart). Although pilgrims from all centuries and all parts of the world have paid homage to Saint Foy's statue, Green had not anticipated the deep visceral reaction she would have when she first beheld the little saint. "It is a shrine," she writes. "And in some mystic way it suggests to the mind's eye more strongly than any imagined likeness could the presence of Saint Foy herself as she was, with her young fresh skin and the radiance, the life, in her face, the light, and as she is: bone and spirit come to God."

This is a three-layered, masterful piece in which Green offers a biography of this young saint and the influence she's had over the centuries, a profile of the highly unique village that hosts her statue, and finally a memoir of Green's own spiritual epiphanies born from this saintly encounter. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
A form of perfectionistic paralysis seems to have gripped Green, author of the critically acclaimed 1972 novel The Dead of the House, who spent more than a quarter-century writing this evocative account of her romance with a French village and its martyr-saint. Like the masonry and artwork of the antique Proven al chapels Green describes, her words bear the imprint of long, loving attention to detail. In the 1970s, Green became entranced by Conques, a hamlet in the south of France, and its shrine dedicated to Foy, a 4th-century Christian girl martyred for refusal to sacrifice to a pagan deity. Foy's relics, encased in a golden and jewel-encrusted statue, made Conques a medieval pilgrimage center. Green explains, with stunning sensitivity for a modern writer, what devotees felt when they stood in the saint's presenceDa mixture of awe and intimacy that exerts power still. Green also captures the rhythms of life in a French village. By the end readers feel they know her neighbors, can taste the village's special foods, and can see the churches and sacred stones Green contemplates. One can quibble with certain aspects of the bookDthe descriptions of flora and fauna become tedious, and Green idealizes peasants as only "big city" writers are capable of doing. Yet Little Saint rises as close to perfection as hagiographic literature ever has. The author, who has passed away since completing the book, should rest easy. (July)

From Library Journal
Green, who wrote for The New Yorker and authored a single novel, the celebrated The Dead of the House, first visited Conques, France, with her painter husband in 1975. Over the next 20 years, they returned frequently to live for months at a time. (Green passed away in 1996.) Green identifies herself as of "Swedenborgian and Episcopalian background, a stranger to saints," yet this "ancient place of pilgrimage" gave her "the gift of seeing into that zone which has been held sacred since the beginning of human consciousness." Conques was the site of the fourth-century martyrdom of a 12-year-old noble girl, later known as Sainte Foy. Green's memoirs are set mostly in "the continuous present of a June day" in 1979. Her encounters with villagers and with the presence of this saint, who still dominates the village, may be read as an interesting travelog or as a spiritual encounter. This beautifully written book reflects wide-eyed wonder at the ordinary life of a village, where past and present miracles are accepted as simple reality, ancient martyrdom and memories of Nazi horrors penetrate the present, and time seems to merge with eternity. Recommended for larger public libraries.

Sainte Foy, the Little Saint
By Martha Graham
Well - - - this was a little difficult to get through. However, if you have any religous fervor in the slightest, go for it. Also, if you have any knowledge of Conques or the Aveyron region of France, this is for you. She details a lot about this area and you can easily feel yourself in that world. Sometimes I felt as though I were back there. Personally though, I liked her "The Dead of the House" better, but it was completely different.

"A Year in Provence" with religious spice
By J. Marren
This book is first an account of a religious awakening, which occurs when the author, interested in this little traveled part of France and its patron saint, experiences something mystical and mysterious. As a basically non-religious person, however, I found her description quite opaque. (The author also has the annoying habit of writing very, very long sentences.) I thought this book worked a lot better as one of the "Year in Provence/Bella Tuscany" genre--particularly because it is focused much more on the people and culture, and not on a home improvement project. The author's own nationality and culture are very much in the background, and there is not an ounce of condescension in her descriptions. Interestingly, this book was published posthumously: the author died in 1996, and I have a sense that the book, which is set in the late 1970's, may have been written much earlier than others in its more well-known travel genre category. For a much more accessible, beautifully written account of religious experience and community, try a slim, simple novella called "Lying Awake" by Salzman.

No narrative momentum.
By A Customer
If you already have an intense interest in St. Foy, or in the Aveyron region of France, you will enjoy this book. It contains some beautifully written passages and warm, honest sentiment.
It also contains a lot of minutely detailed descriptions of places, people, encounters, artistic impressions, religious experiences, scholarly and historical research, cultural observations... What it does not contain is any narrative momentum. All the lovely writing is strung together without any context. Who is this woman who went to all the trouble to document her experiences in Conques over the years? The reader is left with very little idea. After a while, you'll just want it to stop.

From Publishers Weekly
A practicing psychologist in Los Angeles, Grant offers advice on finding love on her syndicated radio program. She is sure to incite controversy with this report in which she accuses the feminist movement of fooling women into believing they can "have it all." Case histories of the author's patients suggest that casual sex and striving for dominance in professional and business life have robbed these woman of love in a lasting partnership with a "good man." Grant cites personal damages resulting when the so-called Amazon jettisons the other Jungian female aspectsMother, Madonnna and Courtesan. Only by acknowledging her biological self and developing a commitment to a man worthy of her can today's woman find true fulfillment and equality, the author argues.

Prerequisite reading for precollege girls AND boys.

I figured out that the reason I can't find this book in used bookstores and resale shops in many major cities, is because it is a permanent, valuable REFERENCE BOOK in personal libraries and no one wants to let go of it! Fortunately, public libraries carry it as well as the author, herself. It should be entitled, "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Being The Nearly Perfect Woman and Attracting The Nearly Perfect Man", and Dr. Grant does it in an easy-to-read, no-psychobabble precious few pages. Dr. Toni rocks!!!!!

Very helpful
By A. Teicher
This book is very helpful to me as I date men after getting divorced a year ago. I really like the idea that surrendering, that being receptive, and that being instead of doing, is the feminine way. I've started looking for clues that this is a widely held belief. In many movies, the romantic object, "the girl," fits well with Toni Grant's profile of a woman. She doesn't have to prove herself; she has the power to attract just by being her best self.

I also like the thorough academic treatment of the subject that precedes the practical advice toward the end of the book. It might perhaps be a little less repetitive, but still, this is a book I'll read again.

Toni Grant gives me the impression that she really knows what she's talking about, and she doesn't shy away from the difficult part of being feminine. I'll quote:

"Becoming a truly receptive woman, a woman oriented toward love rather than toward power, can be a frightening and at times overwhelming task. This transformation is often experienced as a complete disintegration of the personality, a kind of falling apart. Long after she had surrendered to Theseus, Hippolyta recalled:

'When you threw me and got my sword, that was a death to me. I woke all empty ... I thought, "Now I am nothing."'

Yet from that 'nothing' grew a new sense of something, a new kind of power which is born of love." (Page 173)

I wish Toni Grant had written another edition, so we could have the benefit of her experience in a world that has changed since the 1980s. We have the Internet and Speed Dating, and our culture is changing little by little. But men and women haven't changed, and perhaps that renders a newer edition unnecessary. I have made several marks in the book because I want to go back later and find the important points.

I've read The Rules. Those ideas were useful when I was being courted by my ex-husband, and which I use now with some modifications. I've also read The Surrendered Wife, which helped me a lot during my marriage. (These books did not, however, turn my ex-husband into an honorable man, and I chose to divorce him even though I improved as a wife and a woman.) Both of those books were worthwhile. But Toni Grant's book, Being a Woman, is great. I'm so glad I found it just now.

Thanks, Toni, I'm in your debt.

From Publishers Weekly
This is the third collaboration between Madden, TV football analyst and ex-NFL coach, and New York Times sports columnist Anderson, following Hey, Wait a Minute! and One Knee Equals Two Feet. In this self-portrait Madden himself bears out his contention that one size doesn't fit all, i.e., that each of us is unique. He is revealed as delightfully unique as we read about crosscountry travels on his bus (he dislikes flying), the people he meets, his passion for Mexican food (always go to the worst part of town for the best restaurant, he advises), his reasons for leaving his shoelaces untied. He also tackles such subjects as raising children and handling athletes. Madden proves himself to be a down-to-earth, take-me-or-leave-me guy, and it will be the rare reader who won't want to take him.

Surprisingly good
By B. G. Wood
I'm not one to read sports biographies and this one had sat in a basket at a relative's condo for years. Finally, one rainy day, I picked it up. From the cover, I expected a few corny anecdotes and a slathering of platitudes. Instead, I found a man who is tremendously down to earth, who has tremendous insight and understanding of life, who doesn't take himself too seriously, and who genuinely appreciates people - all types of people. I learned a lot about life and how to live it from this book. I'm a football fan and miss him doing commentary, but never realized what a down to earth person he was/is. A good read.

John Madden takes you for a ride through Anytown, USA on his Madden-Cruiser. You feel right at home on his bus, playing poker with him and his buddies, heating up some sausage links, enjoying a few beers, and running into all kinds of people in all kinds of towns along the way. John Madden talks to you, not at you.

NOT UP TO PAR
By A Customer
THIS BOOK IS ONE LONG DRAGGED OUT STORIES OF SOME OF THE BORING PLACES AND PEOPLE JOHN MADEN HAS ENCOUNTERED ON HIS MANY TRAVELS. I FOUND MYSELF WISHING THIS BOOK WAS MUCH SHORTER. I FOUND THE ONLY INTERESTING PARTS WERE HIS DESCRIPTION OF THE BUS AND THE DINNER IN WHICH HE WAS ROASTED BY A VARIETY OF PEOPLE IN THE FOOT BALL WORLD. HIS OTHER BOOKS ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. NOT WORTH IT.

Vintage Books a Division of Random House Edition September 1966 Drawings by Edward Shenton Publisher's Note: The text of this edition of The unvanquished has been reproduced photographically from, and is therefore identical with, a copy of the first printing. Publication date was February 15, 1938. Set in Mississippi during the Civil War and Reconstruction, Faulkner's tenth book, The Unvanquished, focuses on the Sartoris family, who with their code of personal responsibility and courage, stand for the best of the Old South's traditions. Here the reader will meet Colonel Sartoris, the head of the family; his young son Bayard who finds an alternative to bloodshed; Ringo, a perceptive black child who is considered part of the family; independent, obstinate Cousin Drusilla who exchanges her dresses for a uniform; and Granny, the matriarch.

By Allen Mahan
I love Faulkner, and the more I read him tbe easier it is to understand, because the same characters appear in different novels and at different times in their lives. The Unvanquished has a lot of death and tragedy in it, but it too has much humor surrounding some of its events, to boot.

The French connection...
By John P. Jones III
There is a particular "French connection" with this novel, and there is an overall connection between the French people and William Faulkner, and none of the other reviewers have raised this matter. It was the subject of a recent article in "The Guardian," which said that he was the second favorite French author, beating Flaubert, Stendhal, Baudelaire, de Beauvoir, Camus and Celine. Only Marcel Proust was ranked ahead of him. Faulkner spent only a very limited period in France, once during the 20's, and once in 1945 when he worked with the film director, Renoir. Apparently the peasant revolt in the Vendee, led by the clerics, against the forces of the French revolution, resonated with his feelings about the "lost cause" of the South's fight in the American Civil War. For some reason, certainly not evident to me, he entitled the chapter concerning Bayard and Ringo's (who was apparently named after the French victory at Marengo) hunt for Grumby as "Vendee." Furthering some of the inexplicable possible connections on this matter, in Honore de Balzac's great novel on the Vendee revolt, entitled "Les Chouans," the first chapter is "Ambuscade," the same name that Faulkner used for the first chapter in this book. Mere coincidence?

Aside from French connections, the style and content in Faulkner's novels continues to dazzle, and "The Unvanquished" is no exception. The chapters are set during the Civil War, starting with the fall of Vicksburg, through the 10 year period of Reconstruction following the war. The setting is the familiar, to Faulkner readers, Yoknapatawpha County, in northwestern Mississippi. Although the occupation of the county by Union forces is depicted in the novel, and there are numerous killings in the book, there is not a single incident of a Northern or Southern soldier being killed there by the opposite side. (of course, "far off" deaths, such as Drusilla's fiancée at Shiloh are noted). There are numerous memorable scenes, from the night marching of recently freed black slaves to the "Jordan River,"( that borders of Magic Realism) to the generosity of a Union officer who played along with Granny's ruse, to the courage, and ultimate submission of Drusilla, who was forced back into her pre-war role by her female contemporaries, a la "Rosie the Riveter" after the Second World War.

The characterization of black-white relations in Faulkner novels has been, I'm sure, the subject of several PhD dissertations. While I found the relationship of Ringo and Bayard 10 years after the war somewhat implausible, much is redeemed by the actions of Loosh during the conflict. Faulkner no doubt digested the folk tales involving the South's continued defiance of the North, and this was reflected in the somewhat embroidered tale of the unlikely alliance of Ringo and Granny fooling those Union officers. What continues to astonish about Faulkner are the sometimes vertiginous twist and turns, such as the interaction between Bayard and Drusilla in "An Odor of Verbena," and the quick suspense involving the question of whether to tell his father, the indomitable Col. Sartoris, who has already begun to find solace in brandy.

Other reviewers say this novel is an excellent introduction to Faulkner, since it is more "straightforward," others say no. I'm divided on the question. I believe it is as good as any of the others, and has numerous unexplained complexities. It is a joy to read, and deserves the full 5-stars, as do all his others.

Finally, a thought for the present: Col. Sartoris, at times a rigid man of the past, viewing the world through a certain structure, had numerous books on his shelf, including Napoleon's "Maxims," and rather surprisingly, the Koran!

Sartoris Redux
By Jerry Clyde Phillips
Although published in 1938, the initial appearance of this novel can be traced to September 1934. Pressed for cash, Faullkner sent off the first of a series of short stories, dealing with the adolescent adventures of two boys during the Civil War, to the Saturday Evening Post and Scribners Magazine. The idea of collecting these stories into a "novel" was first proposed to his publisher in late 1936 although it is obvious that Faulklner was interested in a quick sale rather than in the creation of another serious work of literature. He did not put a lot of work into the revision and editing of these stories for the novel and consequently the "chapters" of the novel are pretty much identical to the stories that appeared in the two magazines from 1934-36. Interestingly, he was not able to sale the most powerful of the stories, An Odor of Verbena, to the magazines and thus this "chapter" represents the only unique part of the novel. (For those readers who are interested in the original form of the stories that make up this novel, they can be found in The Uncollected Stories of William Faulkner).

Faulkner had already written of the Sartoris family in an earlier novel, Flags in the Dust, but he set that novel during the era of post-World War I disillusionment and in it dealt with the descendants of Bayard - one of the two boys of The Unvanquised - and the condition of the South some sixty years after the Civil War. It is by far the superior work. Perhaps because The Unvanquished was serialized over a period of two years and went through scant editing for re-publication, it is much too episodic and fairly soaks in sentimentality, incongruity, and disbelief - all key ingredients for stories published in the mass circulated periodicals of the day such as the Saturday Evening Post. If the Yankees of the novel were as stupid as Ringo and Granny Rosa made them out to be, we (I guess my Southern upbringing is showing through) would have been marching on the White House in the summer of 1862.

But with even the weakest Faulkner novel there are places in which his brilliance shows through. The description of the flow of recently freed slaves - having no concept of what freedom represented - following the retreating Union army is mesmerizing and the characterization of Ringo and Granny Rosa is among his best. Ringo is elevated from the stereotyped pickaninny, whose sole purpose was to serve and entertain his masters, to an intelligent and cunning boy who is not only the intellectual superior of his white playmate and master, Bayard, but is equal to Granny Rosa in her business dealings with the Yankees. The scene in the church where Ringo is forced to sit in the balcony with his fellow slaves although holding the ledger that could save or destroy the lives of his white "superiors" is brilliant and the irony is not lost even on the most casual reader. By the end of last story, "An Odor of Verbena," it appears that Bayard has made a significant movement away from the nebulous but clinging heritage of the South with all its manifestations of honor and codes of chivalry, to a more aware state of mind. However, to readers of Flags in the Dust, set in the 1920s, this same Bayard is shown as an old man unable to sever himself from the traditions of the Old South, and still rides to town in a horse drawn carriage driven by his family's old slave, Simon.

Many reviewers have suggested that this novel is the place to begin for readers new to Faulkner. It is most decidedly not. Start with Light in August, Sanctuary, or even Flags in the Dust - all three very approachable and far superior to The Unvanquished.

Gutsy Olds
By Lilianne R. Escovedo
If you are reading this you have probably already read Sharon Olds, and liked her enough to go back and look at some of her earlier works, but are fighting a tinge of reservation. Olds can be admired for the sheer raw guts she puts into her poems, the brutal way she expresses her internalized truths. Her honesty is alarming and alluring. But there can be a pariah quality to her, as well. I want to say she has a touch of Madonna in her ethos. At times she can seem to be sneering. This would be insulting, except her writing is so good we want to forgive her, and do - mostly. I find it frustrating when this tone creeps in, as it does here in one or two places. Another disquieting aspect of her writing is the inclusion of some very intimate aspects of her children at various ages and phases. I appreciate her words for their beauty but wonder if her children resent so much exposure. Fortunately, most of the poems in this book are full of clear, blunt prose that revoke the layers of artificiality that can come to accompany our memories of ourselves and the more painful aspects of our personal histories. I find her poems refreshing for this quality (even though thank God I don't have her history). So, although not all poems in this book avoid a self-aggrandizing, mock horror edge, and a few may upset tender sensibilities about what information we need to know about her children in order to understand her as a mother/writer, I enjoyed this book and would even recommend it to readers who have already formed some apprehension toward her work.

Running with Wolves
By Thomas Fulton
I discovered Sharon Olds' poetry while reading the anthology The Rag and Bone Shop of the Heart, which includes several of her poems, most notably (for me) "The Race." I followed through by reading Satan Says and The Dead and the Living. For me, Olds' poetry combines sensuous, keenly observed (and keenly felt), images with searing emotion in a way that achieves an intensity that is, at times, trance inducing. In The Dead and the Living, Olds' writing is grounded in personal family experiences which included, during her childhood, shuddering, shattering incidents of abuse. I found the poems raw, edgy, blunt, earthy, but also subtle, exploring many dimensions of family experience over several genertions. There is something about the work which blends both rage and understanding, an ability to move through without forgetting. Two examples would be the "The Killer" and "The Sign of Saturn" in which Olds reflects on the shadow she sees (or imagines) in her own children. I found The Living and the Dead more alert to the complexity of evil than the earlier book Satan Says, but no more detached from its horror. I'm looking forward to reading her most recent poems to see how her perspectives may have evolved. In my opinion, this a very serious woman (in the best sense of the word serious), who knows her way around both the day world and the underworld and can hold the tension between.

The Control of Nature, by John McPhee

While John McPhee was working on his previous book, Rising from the Plains, he happened to walk by the engineering building at the University of Wyoming, where words etched in limestone said: "Strive on--the control of Nature is won, not given." In the morning sunlight, that central phrase--"the control of nature"--seemed to sparkle with unintended ambiguity. Bilateral, symmetrical, it could with equal speed travel in opposite directions. For some years, he had been planning a book about places in the world where people have been engaged in all-out battles with nature, about (in the words of the book itself) "any struggle against natural forces--heroic or venal, rash or well advised--when human beings conscript themselves to fight against the earth, to take what is not given, to rout the destroying enemy, to surround the base of Mt. Olympus demanding and expecting the surrender of the gods." His interest had first been sparked when he went into the Atchafalaya--the largest river swamp in North America--and had learned that virtually all of its waters were metered and rationed by a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' project called Old River Control.

In the natural cycles of the Mississippi's deltaic plain, the time had come for the Mississippi to change course, to shift its mouth more than a hundred miles and go down the Atchafalaya, one of its distributary branches. The United States could not afford that--for New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and all the industries that lie between would be cut off from river commerce with the rest of the nation. At a place called Old River, the Corps therefore had built a great fortress--part dam, part valve--to restrain the flow of the Atchafalaya and compel the Mississippi to stay where it is.

In Iceland, in 1973, an island split open without warning and huge volumes of lava began moving in the direction of a harbor scarcely half a mile away. It was not only Iceland's premier fishing port (accounting for a large percentage of Iceland's export economy) but it was also the only harbor along the nation's southern coast. As the lava threatened to fill the harbor and wipe it out, a physicist named Thorbjorn Sigurgeirsson suggested a way to fight against the flowing red rock--initiating an all-out endeavor unique in human history. On the big island of Hawaii, one of the world's two must eruptive hot spots, people are not unmindful of the Icelandic example. McPhee went to Hawaii to talk with them and to walk beside the edges of a molten lake and incandescent rivers.

Some of the more expensive real estate in Los Angeles is up against mountains that are rising and disintegrating as rapidly as any in the world. After a complex coincidence of natural events, boulders will flow out of these mountains like fish eggs, mixed with mud, sand, and smaller rocks in a cascading mass known as debris flow. Plucking up trees and cars, bursting through doors and windows, filling up houses to their eaves, debris flows threaten the lives of people living in and near Los Angeles' famous canyons. At extraordinary expense the city has built a hundred and fifty stadium-like basins in a daring effort to catch the debris.

Taking us deep into these contested territories, McPhee details the strategies and tactics through which people attempt to control nature. Most striking in his vivid depiction of the main contestants: nature in complex and awesome guises, and those who would attempt to wrest control from her--stubborn, often ingenious, and always arresting characters.

Amazon.com Review
Master how-it-works writer John McPhee has instructed his readers in the arcana of how oranges are commercially graded, how mountains form, how canoes are built and oceans crossed. In The Control of Nature he turns his attention once more to geology and the human struggle against nature. In one sketch, he explores the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' unrealized plan to divert the flow of the Mississippi River into a tributary, the Atchafalaya, for flood control; in another, he looks at the ingenious ways in which an Icelandic engineer saved a southern harbor on that island from being destroyed by a lava flow; in a third, he examines a complex scheme to protect Los Angeles from boulders ejected from mountains by compression and tectonic movement. As always, McPhee combines a deep knowledge of his subject with a narrative approach that is wholly accessible; you may not have thought you were interested in earthquakes and flood control, but he gently leads you to take a passionate concern in such matters.

Review
“All three elemental battles recounted by the masterly McPhee are unified by the most uncontrolled and stubborn of all forces: human nature.” --R. Z. Sheppard, Time
“It is difficult to put these stories aside. If the stories bear witness to the ultimate triumph of nature over human engineering, they also testify to the triumph of art over nature.” --Stephen J. Pyne, The New York Times Book Review (front page)
“This book is unmistakable McPhee: the silky narrative, with keen detail and sharp dialogue, the finely drawn characters, the nimble metaphors.” --Stephen MacDonald, The Wall Street Journal
“Some of his passages left me gasping for breath…This book gave me more pure enjoyment than anything I've read in a long time.” --Christopher Shaw, The Washington Post Book World

Nature Will Win!
By Earle Jones
John McPhee, although not a trained Geologist himself, knows more about the subject than 99% of the lay scientists. He is a fabulous writer with a gift of making esoteric subject matter very readable to the interested layman. Five stars!

McPhee's best.
By the_global_village_idiot
John McPhee has a knack for translating complex subjects into approachable essays. The Control of Nature reveals his gift better than any other McPhee book (and I've treasured them all).
McPhee's gift for revealing characters exceeds that of all but the best novelists, and he uses these people to tell his stories. Leaving aside the scope and sheer wonder of how humans have attempted to control huge rivers, battle geologic phenomena or attempt to do nothing less than fight entropy - the human intervention McPhee describes are equal parts brilliance and hubris - you'll marvel at this book as much for its storytelling brilliance and artful construction as for its subject matter.
There are only three writers I ever wanted to meet. Two are dead (Mark Twain, Joseph Mitchell). Maybe I'll luck out some day and meet McPhee. I have no questions for him - I only want to say thanks.

How War Came: The Immediate Origins of the Second World War, by Donald Cameron Watt

In this book the author focuses on the 11 months following the Munich conference in September 1938, and chronicles the events that led to world war. His approach is through the eyes of the leaders of all the powers involved, drawing on official records, private papers, reminiscences and biographies of the politicians, soldiers, diplomatists and others who took part in the processes which led to war.

From Publishers Weekly
Watt closely examines the political and diplomatic atmosphere during the pivotal 11-month prewar period that included the signing of the Munich agreement, German occupation of the Sudentenland, the Nazi-Soviet nonaggression pact, the invasion of Poland and the British declaration of war. At the core of this fast-moving narrative is a reconstruction of increasingly tense conferences held by Hitler and his foreign minister Ribbentrop with a stream of statesmen "suitors" hoping to prevent or at least delay the Nazi leader's aggressive designs on neighboring countries. Suitors included Britain's Chamberlain, France's Edouard Daladier, Italy's Galeazzo Ciano, the Soviet Union's Molotov. Watt, a professor of international history at the London School of Economics, also examines the efforts of Mussolini to fathom Hitler's intentions, the Vatican's efforts to keep Italy neutral, and President Roosevelt's problems reconciling intervention with American neutrality. The involvement of the smaller European states in the overall effort to turn Hitler aside from his inexorable course is also analyzed. Watt's majestic work concludes with Prime Minister Chamberlain's invitation to the politically eclipsed Churchill to join the war cabinet, and the flash-message that flew through the halls of government: Winston is back. A Finely Crafted Diplomatic History that Renders Insight into Current Events
By Sun_Zeneise
I add a 5th star to the other positive reviews to underscore their well considered evaluations of this very well-documented, superb diplomatic history. It is destined to be a classic study, one dense with subtle insights in its exploration of interconnected global diplomacy of this the critical biennial verging to a World War.

There is not any better time to read this book than -- today -- during the Ukrainian Crisis. It will render an illuminating comprehension of today's political and military strategies that current journalists elide.

Excellent historical study.
By R. H OAKLEY
"How War Came" covers the period roughly from Europe to the beginning of World War II. Of course, the key actor in this period was Hitler; it was his will, more than any other factor, that caused the war to start.
Of course, no one at the time knew that at the time, and this book accounts the diplomatic efforts made by the Britain, France and others to avoid the War. This provides a useful perspective on the history of the time, which tends to focus exclusively on Hitler. Watt has thoroughly researched this period, and provides information that even those who are well-read in the events leading up to the war will learn much from this book.

Some choice information but poorly written
By Michael Anson Wright
An exhaustive account of the months leading up to the beginning of the Second World War in September 1939. The author seems to have read everything available about the diplomatic posturing and intrigues among the major powers. However his writing style is abominable; meandering sentences densely infested with long parallel constructions and multiple dependent clauses. Often I had to re-read two or three times to figure out the subject of a sentence. Perhaps this ornate and pompous style is required in the halls of academe.

The material within a chapter is often poorly organized. In the midst of a detailed account of day-to-day events will be a choice nugget of information, revealing the intent of some government policy, or piecing together events to construct a strategic view. A short overview at the beginning of each chapter, to indicate the political and military shifts to be covered, could help immensely, giving the reader a framework in which to locate the immense wealth of detail narrated for each week (or even day) leading up to the actual declaration of war.
