The Necessary Angel

by

Wallace Stevens

"In this book, the first collection of his prose works, he accounts in scintillating language for the peculiarly modern and sometimes deliquescent fervor that has prompted his poems. Few poets have written so characteristically about their own craft."
—Perspective—U.S.A.

"These are rich essays, simply constructed yet richly and elegantly written."
—Hayden Carruth, The Nation

"The most welcome attribute of the book is its humane good sense, equally manifest whether Stevens is discussing a desolate Pennsylvania churchyard. Plato's images or the personalities of those who prefer a drizzle in Venice to a hard rain in Hartford.'''
—New Republic

"It is a rare pleasure to breathe the atmosphere of confidence and wholeness which distinguishes the world of Wallace Stevens. Here we are refreshed by certainty without fragmentariness, by joyous possibilities without dishonesty. Here we find a moral and philosophical center through which reality may be repossessed and re-created with each new poetic act."

About the Author
Wallace Stevens was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, on October 2, 1879, and died in Hartford, Connecticut, on August 2, 1955.  Although he had contributed to the Harvard Advocate while in college, he began to gain general recognition only when Harriet Monroe included four of his poems in a sepcial 1914 wartime issue of Poetry.  Harmonium, his first volume of poems, was published in 1923, and was followed by Ideas of Order (1936), The Man with the Blue Guitar (1937), Parts of a World (1942), Transport to Summer (1947), The Auroras of Autumn (1950), The Necessary Angel (a volume of essays, 1951), The Collected Poems of Wallace Stevens (1954), and Opus Posthumous (first published in 1957, edited by Samuel Frued Morse; a new, revised, and corrected edition by Milton J. Bates, 1989).  Mr. Stevens was awarded the Bollingen Prize in Poetry of the Yale University Library for 1949.  In 1951 he won the National Book Award in Poetry for The Auroras of Autumn, in 1955 he won it a second time for The Collected Poems of Wallace Stevens, which was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1955.  From 1916 on, he was associated with the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company, of which he became vice president in 1934.

Trust the tale not the teller
By Shalom Freedman
Few are the great poets who construct a critical edifice worthy of bearing attention similar to that of their poetry. Wordsworth and Coleridge do this in 'The Lyrical Ballads' and Keats does it in his Letters. Stevens a poet of extraordinary exuberance and richness constructs in these essays a kind of master -guide to own aesthetic and fundamental principles. His conception of a Reality- forming Imagination capable of transforming what it senses into supreme fictions, hints at what his own Art is all about.

But the line - by- line beauty of his poetry and its deep transforming often hypnotic music have no real parallel in his prose. Prose explains and poetry reveals more than any explanation can give.

The Essays can be a help to the reader of the Poetry, but it is the Poetry that it is the Essential Art.

A Masterwork of Philosophy
By jimjoyce25
Perhaps the most significant work of philosophy in English in the 20th century.

Stevens works in the same field as Maurice Blanchot and the later Heidegger, with two caveats:

1. He writes exceptionally clear and elegant English, and

2. He is a real poet.

What he has to say about the relation of reality and the imagination provides the clearest sense of what Heidegger is getting at in speaking of absence and presence, and what Blanchot means by l'espace litteraire.

These essays also provide a way into some of Stevens' own crucial poems, like The Man with the Blue Guitar, and Notes Toward a Supreme Fiction.

Any critic who ignores this work (talking about you, Harold Bloom), or mangles it (Helen Vendler) cannot possibly understand what Stevens' poetry is about.

Postscript: After writing this review, I subsequently read through the unabridged version of Wallace Stevens' letters. I was quite pleased to note that in several letters written in the 1950s, he inquires of Peter Lee, a young poet and friend of his who lived for some time in Fribourg, whether he has encountered Heidegger there. In another letter, he asks his Parisian bookseller, Paule Vidal, to send him a copy of a recent book of Heidegger's on the German poet Holderlin. And in another letter, he states simply that he "loves" Maurice Blanchot.

For one thing, this shows that he was one of the first Americans to have read the work of Blanchot and the later Heidegger, possibly as early as the 1930s but certainly by the 1940s. Consider that even the most avant garde university intellectuals did not begin reading them in this country until the 1970s. But even more, this shows that Stevens felt a very strong affinity with Blanchot's writing on literature, and I believe he felt Blanchot's work expressing ideas similar to his own. And he may well have felt the same about Heidegger.

If you love Wallace Stevens
By NJL
If you love Wallace Stevens, and I do, these articles will get you thinking. His theory that ideas aren't conceived but are perceived from nature is mind blowing, if you stop to consider the full implications. His idea of art being part reality, part imagination is another deep concept to ponder. But a note of caution: Stevens' prose is not good. He can be confusing... his word choice is often obtuse and the pieces that were delivered as lectures can read as if they came from the classic academician of movie and tv fame... who is brilliant but can't tie his shoes or get out of a shower of rain, as they say.Still... if you're into poetry, the form, or any art, for that matter, Stevens has some very pithy things to say. Be prepared to challenge your mind.

Amazon.com Review
Woody Allen's greatness as a director rests squarely on his stupendous talent as a writer. In the glory years from 1977 to 1980 he released his best--and best written--movies. Included in this volume are the scripts of Annie Hall, Allen's first mature film and the winner of the Best Picture Oscar; Interiors, his first serious work, a Bergmanesque treatment of a tortured family; Manhattan, his greatest and most characteristic movie, which concerns a writer's attempt to find true love in the comic wilderness of New York City; and Stardust Memories, his most satiric and personal piece, about the effects of fame on a film director who is standing at a crossroads in his life.

Do It For The Eggs
By David Bradley
I bought this while studying screenwriting, assuming that owning ANNIE HALL and MANHATTAN would somehow deliver upon me some kind of ability, perhaps a bit of greatness via osmoseous (sp?).
I was wrong.
I also realized that MANHATTAN is based more on the visual than I had realized--the script, while great, isn't on the same level as ANNIE HALL; INTERIORS, which dissapointed me on the screen is a very good script; and--this just confirmed what I already knew--ANNIE HALL is a great great GREAT film.
Did I mention that ANNIE HALL is a great film?

One size fits all
By A Customer
I found this book and exercises at a time in my life when I was a new mother with a back problem. I turned to this book as a last resort.
My experience: I lost weight, got in shape, and strengthened my back. I've had no back problems for the past 17 years.
20 minutes of my time for at least 2-3 times a week. One does not need to be in shape to do the exercises. One needs to be patient and take the time to learn each exercise and only do them at their own capacity. The process is more important than the end result. Use common sense. One can do these exercises anywhere with no equipment.
The book is user friendly. One needs to read the text to get the most benefit and understand the exercises.

Callanetics is MUCH better....
By A Customer
Both Lydia Bach and Callan Pinckney studied under Lotte Berk for a time, then went their separate ways. Callan did some modifications to the exercises so that people with back problems (which she also had) could do them, as well as people who were just starting out. Lydia did not modify them. When you read this book, you definitely get the message that if you are not already fit, or someone who has the flexibility of a ballet dancer or a yogi, don't bother.
It kind of has some artsy/grainy black and white photography, and is interesting if you are looking at the original method to see where Callanetics came from, but as a manual of exercise, even though it demonstrates the positions, it is not as "ordinary people" friendly as Callanetics. Buy Callanetics instead, you won't be sorry.

Gorgeous vintage book with great exercises
By cristinalatina
I have great respect for Lydia Bach. Unlike Callan, she named her method after its creator, ballerina Lotte Berk, and demonstrated the famous exercises with grace and elegance. The photographs are beautiful and do not fail to capture the enjoyment this method of exercise produces. As for the exercises, to me they are miraculous. I highly recommend this book, it is almost a collector's item for Lotte Berk method aficionados.

"Magnificent... a beautiful, feverish account of obsessive love" -- Jonathan Coe Guardian "Featuring lengthy debates between humanist freemasons and Jews-turned-Catholics, a long love-scene written entirely in French and a brilliant hallucinatory journey down the snowy slopes, it merits multiple readings. A novel for a lifetime not just a rainy afternoon" Guardian "A monumental writer" Sunday Telegraph "The greatest German novelist of the 20th century" Spectator "Mann is Germany's outstanding modern classic, a decadent representative of the tradition of Goethe and Schiller. With his famous irony, he was up there with Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Freud, holding together the modern world with a love of art and imagination to compensate for the emptiness left by social and religious collapse." The great novel of ideas
By Guillermo Maynez
In this absolute masterwork, Mann tells us the story and the education -intellectual, emotional and spiritual- of young Hans Castorp. Recently graduated from his engineering studies at the university, and just about to begin working for a shipyard, Castorp travels to the Swiss Alps at Davos. He is supposed to spend there three weeks visiting his cousin Joachim Ziemssen, who is receiving treatment against tuberculosis in a high-mountain hospital. After the three original weeks, Castopr discovers he is "sick", and so he stays there seven years, the span of this magnificent "bildungsroman" or novel of apprenticeship and inner growth. It is never really clear if Castorp does get sick or if he gets trapped by the magical place.

Anyway, the isolated hospital is the perfect place for Mann to create this microcosmos of Europe and of life, a few years before that world came crumbling down forever in the suicidal WWI. In the Berghoff hospital, Castorp meets several people which will be, either through affinity or antagonism, his mentors. But first we have to mention the beautiful Russian Clawdia Chauchat, the one with the "steppenwolf-like eyes", a little older than Castorp, and with whom he falls in love -from a distance. Castorp will only have one chance of passionate love with her, before she temporarily leaves the hospital. The rest of their love will be only Platonic.

But Castorp meets other interesting and influential people. The most important one is Settembrini, an extremely sympathetic and attractive character. He is an Italian rationalist and liberal, who talks about progress, democracy, freedom, and the bright future of humankind, once it is set free from oppression and superstition. Settembrini embodies Western culture , faith in science, and progress, with a touch of naivete. Settembrini is sarcastic and straightforward, and a great creator of memorable sentences.

Halfway through the novel appears Settembrini's antagonist, his eternal (or almost) rival in heated debates. He is Naphta, a Jewish converted to Jesuit seminarist, who is a dangerous and terrorist radical. He embodies the spirit of the Middle Ages, mysticism and occultism. At the same time a religious fanatic and a Communist (after all, Communism is more a religion than a philosophy), Naphta hates all things bourgeois: family, business, democracy, science and freedom of thought. He proposes a world that is static and egalitarian, a mystic Communism ruled by the Church, and he states that the only way to reach that Utopia is through Terrorism. Settembrini's and Naphta's discussions, which have a prophetic ending, are of the utmost relevance for our time.

A third mentor appears, late in the book, in the form of the millionare Dutchman Peeperkorn. He is an old, vane an at the same time endearing man. He comes back with Clawdia when she returns from her European sojourn, as her lover. Even though he is his beloved's lover, Castorp develops a father-son relationship with this man. Peeperkorn represents the Dyonisiac impulse, the life of the flesh, the senses, and the self. Irritant and inarticulate, Peeperkorn teaches Castorp many things about life, until he makes a sad, honorable and admirable decision. I won't spoil the ending, but it makes for one of the best books ever written.

Anyone who reads this book, aside from his or her affinities, will come out of it a little or much wiser. Like in "Doktor Faustus" (which can be considered a philosophical sequel and which I have reviewed here in Amazon), Mann brilliantly explores a number of important subjects. The most important is Time, or rather, the passage of Time. What is Time? Can it be really measured? Is it its length the same for all of us, all the time? What is its relationship with Space? The hospital's isolation, as I said, is perfect to explore this subject. The other major subject is sickness and health, as well as the relationship between body and mind. And, of course, Society. Mann opposes the rational and liberal mentality to the mystic and spiritual.

Never boring -in spite of its seemingly dense themes-, and with a great sense of humor and of irony, this book can be read fastly and merrily, even though it is long. Character development is of the highest order, as well as the Alpine setting and the poetic quality of Mann's prose.

PS: Look out, near the end of the sixth part (there are seven), for a chapter called "Snow". It is magical and it could be a masterfull short story in its own merit.

So Many Themes Taken Up in So Much Time
By Adam Shah
Nominally, the Magic Mountain is the story of Hans Castorp, a young German man who has just finished school and is about to start on a career in shipbuilding. First, he goes for three weeks to a Swiss sanatorium to visit his cousin, partly for a vacation before he starts his job and partly to convince his cousin, a soldier, that he should rejoin the real world rather than stay in the sanatorium. Castorp gets a check-up from the doctor, learns that he is ill and remains for seven years.
Mann originally started this book as a novella parody of sanatoriums and medicine in the early 20th Century, when doctors were first saying that disease was created by organisms and were enamored with the power of the newly discovered x-rays. However, Mann stopped the novella at the beginning of World War I, and came back to it at after the war, realizing that he had a lot to say and that this story might be a good vehicle through which to say it.
After all, the sanatorium's clientele were the new rich and the old upper class of all the different countries of Europe who began the war. The doctors acted both as the leaders who led them through the insanity and the scientists who made the mechanized, horrible war possible. And Hans Castorp was the age of the soldiers, following the leaders, the aristocracy, the scientists and the intellectuals into battle.
You can read all this into the book, if you wish. The doctors are firm in their belief that they are helping their patients, but are not above shenanigans like "proving" with little evidence that patients should stay year-round, rather than leave for the summer in order to line their wallets. Herr Settembrini and later Herr Nafta are the intellectuals filling Castorp with ideas that seem sometimes benign and sometimes diabolical. Castorp is a young, impressionable man who falls madly in love for a fellow patient, Clavdia, but has no outlet for his emotion, except during Carnival--a truly amazing scene, which alone is enough to make the book worthwhile. No wonder this continent was plunged into a tragic war that left Mann with the need to write this beautiful, tragic book.
I, however, was more interested in Mann's thoughts about of life in general that permeate this book. My favorite example is the way Mann talks about the concept of "getting used to getting used." He describes it in the sense of Castorp who never gets used to the thin air in the Alps and therefore always winds up redfaced and short of breath. However, Castorp does get used to always being redfaced and short of breath. Therefore, he gets used to getting used to the Alps.
This is what part of life is. We are unhappy with many parts of our life (maybe a job, maybe family, maybe friends or lack of friends, or financial resources) and we never get used to that. It leaves us with an empty feeling somewhere in our soul and no way to get rid of it. We never get used to this problem and thus the empty feeling never goes away. But we get used to the empty place in our soul and think of it only occasionally. But it is there crying out.
What a sad thought about life. The solution, of course, is to listen to the part that is crying out rather than squelching it and to try to do something about it. But it is often easier to get used to getting used to a situation than it is to fix the situation. It is easier for Castorp to stay in the mountains rather than breathing normally.
Overall, an excellent book, with ideas that I had never even come close to thinking of before.

Great novel. I can recommend these Everyman's Library hardcover editions. If you want this book as a keeper, you should be happy with this edition. The paper is good. The size is just right and the binding tight and well-done. Plus you get a ribbon as a bookmark.

"In his earlier work Laing guided the reader to understanding. In Knots he compels him to experience.... To grasp this dense and difficult book one must be willing to follow Laing in his spirals of descent. If Knots is to yield, one must yield to the knots."

-- James S. Gordon, The New York Times Book Review

"Dr. Laing's gentle determination to unpeel the bottom motive, the most inward secret of the heart, produces a curious combination of intensity and compassion....The heartbreaking ironies...belong to an artist rather than a psychiatrist....

"The voices of known demons rise from these pages: demons of guilt, demons of self-justification; demons of perverse will, demons of self-destruction. All the enemies of the human spirit are arrayed here as vividly, as warningly as in a medieval morality play. Those who believe that to unmask the enemy is a first step toward confounding him will find this a practical as well as a moral book."

A unique book. It is meant to make you think as you read, and illustrate how many of our relationships are built on assumptions and attitudes which are not necessary, or even rational. Read a page, and stop to think which relationship you know which follows the pattern you just read.

The Emperor's New Clothes
By calmly
I've found no value in this book, despite holding Laing in high esteem for his compassion toward the mentally ill and his provocative challenges to the status quo. I'm thankful that some of his other books have been of so much value to me; this one I don't get.
"Knots" consists of an opening page which suggests that the patterns that follow would correlate significantly with actual problems in human relationships, followed by the patterns themselves. However, there is no example presented of any specific real incident involving any of these "knots". There is no suggestion as to how one might avoid such "knots" if one found oneself in them. There is no reference to other works of Laing or anyone else which might provide further information about such "knots". The patterns seem more wordplay than description to me. I don't see any effective connection between these patterns and real issues I've encountered: I haven't met any Jack or Jill's nor am I aware of having been one. My little brain may spare me from constructing such complicated thought patterns; perhaps I manage to become confused on my own with much simpler ways of thinking.
I'd suggest instead reading Gregory Bateson (if you're interested in how one can get stuck by what's said in a relationship), or something else by Laing if Laing's your interest, or Peter Handke's staggering play "Kaspar" if you like to find real meaning within apparent words of nonsense, or Dr. Seuss if you like intelligent playfulness with words.

Self-Consciousness, by John Updike

John Updike’s memoirs consist of six chapters in which he writes of his home town, his psoriasis, his stuttering, his discomfort during the Vietnam war, his Updike ancestors, and his religion and sense of self. These essays together give the inner shape of a life, up to the age of fifty-five, of a relatively fortunate American male. He has attempted, his foreword states, “to treat this life, this massive datum which happens to be mine, as a specimen life, representative in its odd uniqueness of all the oddly unique lives in this world.” In the service of this metaphysical effort, he has been hair-raisingly honest and beautifully eloquent, not to say, in a number of places, self-effacingly funny. He takes the reader beyond self-consciousness, into sheer wonder at the world and its fabric.

From Publishers Weekly
Updike's memoirit is by no means an autobiography, but rather, as the title brilliantly suggests, a thoughtful communing with past selvesis, as expected, wonderfully written. It is also disarmingly frank about certain aspects of the writer's life. He seems, for instance, to have suffered an unusual number of physical and psychosomatic liabilities: psoriasis (which he attempted to alleviate by soaking himself in Caribbean sun and eventually by living in Ipswich, Mass., where he could sunbathe in the dunes); stuttering, less than chronic but anxiously erratic; and crippling bouts of asthma. Updike writes of them with extraordinary and thoughtful intensity. He recalls also, tenderly, his hometown in Pennsylvania, his parents, and later, at exhaustive length and detail, a coterie of Updikes, seemingly every one who ever lived. He also talks of his politics (he was unfashionably a centrist on Vietnam) and the ways in which God permeates his life. About what one suspects has probably been a very lively sex life he throws out only occasional hintswhile admitting to failures as father and husband. Above all, he emerges as a most profoundly committed writer: "To be in print was to be saved. And to this moment a day when I have produced nothing printable . . . is a day lost and damned." BOMC and QPBC alternates.

From Library Journal
This work by Updike is not an autobiography; that is, it is not a chronicle of events that have made up the author's life. Rather, as the subtitle states, it is a collection of memoirs, of memories. Updike is smart enough to know that though memory is not always accurate, it is still the essential element in a consciousness of self. Here Updike's consciousness frequently focuses on his struggles--with psoriasis, with stuttering, with dental problems, with his lack of doveishness during the Vietnam era. Readers will recognize in these memories scenes and snippets from his novels, fragments of which are provided. As always, Updike is an intelligent writer, and this book is essential.

From one Shillingtonian to another...
By John J. Rinck
One of the main regrets of my five years in Shillington (ages 12-16) was that I did not realize that I was walking in the footsteps of one of the greatest authors of all time. John Updike's autobiography, especially as it concerns Shillington, was like reading a bit of my own life. He was an alter boy at the church that is behind my old Miller Street home. I was a busboy at the restaurant that used to be his doctor's office that used to be a house. He used to walk up New Holland Avenue to the cemetary, passing number 39, which would years later be a home (apartment) to me. The hallowed halls of Governor Mifflin Jr. High, where I labored from 7th to 9th grade, were once the halls of the old high school that Mr. Updike once passed through. I wonder if we shared the same locker? The old movie theater, in which I saw my first movie alone, still holds a special place in my history. But through my many walks up and down Philadelphia Avenue, I am saddened by the fact that I was never drawn to number 117. My visits to Shillington in the past decade have been unfortunately too brief, and even before reading Mr. Updike's autobiography I have wanted to return to retrace my old footsteps. However, the walk up and down Philadelphia Avenue will include a stop, a reverential pause, at number 117, the shadow of my life in Shillington.

On JU's passing
By William S Jamison
On the passing away of JU it occurred to me to read something of his to fix the memory of him and chose this book because of its autobiographical nature. The sort of books I would normally read with such a title would be about what Consciousness is and Self-Consciousness in particular, but this is JU's thoughts on his own self-consciousness - a very different sort of thing. The chapter "On Being a Self Forever" comes closest to what I would normally expect. But in chapter one the walk that night in Shillington eerily reminds me much of my similar experiences in West Chester. Even the street names are similar, though of course that was, for me, a college town, not where I grew up. In some of his comments in chapter two it strikes me how recent events in a near by community - Coatesville - there has been a string of arson fires destroying whole blocks of the town. Perhaps not the same reason as JU gives for the one he describes (p 65) but I am suspicious. In the chapter "On Not Being a Dove" I enjoyed the description of things associated with Unitarians. His father in law's statement that "our human need for transcendence should be met with minimal embarrassments to reason" (p 132) is precious. Love the Robin Williams quote "If you remember the Sixties you weren't there." (p 148) I suppose I should read Kurt Vonnegut's "Galapagos". "The yearning for an afterlife is the opposite of selfish: it is love and praise for the world that we are privileged, in this complex interval of light, to witness and experience." (p 217) I may get to use that line someday. It strikes me that his point of view is very contemporary on this. Not Medieval at all. Not Buddhist either. Quoting Unamuno "Consciousness is a disease." (p 226) becomes a thoughtful discussion of religion with JU's conclusion: "Perhaps there are two kinds of people: those for whom nothingness is no problem, and those for whom it is an insuperable problem, an outrageous cancelation rendering every other concern, from mismatching socks to nuclear holocaust, negligible." (p 228) Odd, while reading "Now the dog heaves in his sleep, woofing at some dream prey" - my own dog was doing the same thing at my feet. (p. 242) The last chapter was my favorite.

one of a kind, first of its kind
By Frank Frost
Noel Young, the real author (Leon Elder is a clever pseudonym) was the first popularizer of the hot tub, made out of old wine vats and improved materials in Santa Barbara, CA. This collection shows many nude people enjoying hot tubs together and was a first in publishing. There was nothing erotic or pornographic about it, so I wonder whey another reviewer said "not for kids." The first thing a newborn sees is a nipple, so why so uptight? Full disclosure: my homebuilt hot tub is featured in the book. 41 years ago and I still use it every other day.

Great book but not for kids
By C. McFarland
Good book, lots of photos of people enjoying hot tubs in the nude. Discusses not only how to build but different types of hot tubs and some history of their use. The pictures are done in a very naturalist overtone.

The Difference that Made the Difference
By Cobra1041@aol.com
The challenge of cardcounting is not learning to do it, but "conning" the pit personnel into letting you do it.
I was the stereotypical counter till I read this book (felt guilty, avoided contact with pit supervisors, neglected value of rapport with dealers). The result was very quick shuffles and even being told not to make any more blackjack bets.
Since I have adopted the mind set described in this book and the resultant behaviors, (engage pit personnel in conversations that interest them, appear to play just for fun and the money means nothing, dress like you can afford to lose) I have enjoyed deep penetration into single decks for multiple hours at a time (the difference that makes the difference).
I agree with the top authors on the game that this is the best book on casino comportment and developing your "act".

learn how not to get caught as a card counter
By Amazon Customer
This book is out of date in terms of card counting, there are better book out there today. What htis book offers is how to avoid getting caught by not getting out of the typical sterotype of a card counter and look more like a regular gambler. Anyone that in card counting or thinking about should read this book.

One of the eleven classics
By a face in the crowd
I couldn't believe this book only had three reviews and they averaged to four stars! This book took camouflage out of the realm of cave paintings! One bozo actually said it was out of date. Duh, bozo! It was written in the seventies!!! What are you going to do, give Ed Thorp's "Beat the Dealer" one star because the ten count is obsolete!!! I bought my original copy of this book used at 99 cents. I described it as "finding a Picasso at a garage sale". I recently bought this copy I'm reviewing for a floorman I know at Silverton. I wanted him to see all the casino countermeasures that Ian forced with this book... You read Beat the Dealer, Playing Blackjack as a Business and Playing Blackjack to Win for your history lesson. You read Wong's Professional Blackjack and Blackjack Secrets. You read Kenny's Million Dollar Blackjack. You read Ian's two books. You read Snyder's "Blackbelt" and Schlesinger's "Attack". You read Griffin's "Bible". If it ain't in those books, it ain't real!!!

Beautifully illustrated, charming folk and fairy tales.
By Robert A Felthousen
"Innocent young maidens cast into the grips of horrible old hags, frogs who are really princesses awaiting the right kiss, magical spindles and feathers, precious golden apples -- these and other classic fairytale ingredients are to be found in this superb collection of seven traditional Russian stories. Collected by Afanasyev, "the Russian Grimm," and splendidly decorated with the peotic and colorful illustrations of Ivan Bilibin, renowned nineteenth-century scenic artist, the stories share the common themes of good versus evil, psychic transformation, and rebirth. Children will be enchanted and adults intrigued by the sinister and delightful qualities of these traditional folk tales." -- excerpt from dust jacket.

This collection of fairy tales is, indeed, marvelous. It contains seven classic stories:

*Ivan Tsarevich, the grey wolf, and the firebird

*Sister Alyonushka and brother Ivanushka

*Finist the falcon

*Marya Morevna

*The white duck

*Vasilisa the beautiful

*The frog princess

While the stories are entertaining in themselves, the illustrations really deserve the most praise. Bilibin's work is reminiscent of Alfonse Mucha's Art Nouveau pieces -- possibly the best is Bilibin's painting of Vasilisa escaping from Baba Yaga's hut, carrying an enchanted skull mounted on a stick. (Light pours from the empty eye sockets; that's how Vasilisa can see to leave.)

Not to be missed by collectors or lovers of fairy tales and fantasy -- the artwork alone is worth the purchase.

Wonderful Stuff!
By Lynne
I've known these books and stories for years but sadly were stolen from me. Now I have them again they still thrill me as a reader with it's rich archaic language and the pictures have stayed in my mind for over 30 years. Would love to know if there were more Russian Folk/Fairy Tales out there with Bilikin's artwork who should be rated as one of the best illustrators of his time.

Printing errors galore!
By Benedikte
The lack of proof reading and the extent of the printing errors make what would be an interesting collection of folk tales very difficult to read. The same degree of carelessness is shown in the thinking behind the introduction. This little collection from Russia's folklore is almost surrealistic in its shoddy presentation. I have never before seen a published book with so poor a quality of presentation.
