A Hard-To-Find Classic By A Much Underappreciated Writer

Like "Guys And Dolls," the Treasury is a collection of Runyon's Broadway short stories. It includes favorites like "Hold 'Em Yale" and "Jack 'O Hearts," as well as some more rare tales including an early Runyon piece where a prototype of Runyon's typically uninvolved narrator actually plays a crucial role in the storyline. The stories within and the excellent introduction (which sheds much more light on the author's life than any other Runyon collection) make this both a perfect introduction to Runyon's Broadway or an excellent addition to a collection. Damon Runyon is often forgetten when the time comes to list the great American writers of the 20th century. His unique style of prose is truly entertaining, and he evokes any emotion from the reader at will ("Little Miss Marker", for example will force you through the whole spectrum of emotion). A great collection of works from one of my favorite writers.

Damon Runyon is a great humorist writer. This is a book of a collection of his short stories. Some of the stories have been adopted for stage and screen. Perhaps Guys & Dolls and Little Miss Marker are the most notable adoptions. The characters in his stories are mostly gamblers and gangsters of the 1920's - 1940's era. They all have very unusual names that are characteristic of their personalities like Hot Horse Herbie and Brandy Bottle gates.

An American who later married into the Spanish nobility, the author began her career as a "queen of international society" by working as a decoder for the OSS. Her book describes how she (nee Aline Griffith) was recruited by the OSS while working as a model at Hattie Carnegie's, trained in espionage, and sent to Madrid. Once there, says Romanones, she decoded secret messages, organized a chain of women spies, and mingled among the cream of Spanish society to ferret out information about Nazis and German sympathizers. The author also details her lifestyle among the rich and famous. Indeed, so active was her social life that one wonders how she had any time for business. A retired Spanish teacher recommends "The Spy Wore Red"...to ALL! (Eager Reader, Braintree, MA)

I first reviewed this book in 2004, but years later realized it somehow was not listed with my later reviews. For that reason, I am editing and reissuing it now. As a Spanish teacher, I recommended The Spy Wore Red to my high school students for years. Several students later spent college junior year in Spain, returning to tell me how much this book meant to them, appreciating it more following their sojourn there. Enjoying this thriller enabled them to catch glimpses of the old Spain in the new.

Reading and re-reading The Spy Wore Red is a wonderful experience. Most of your other reviewers agree, but there are two aspects they seem to miss: its the richness of traditional Spanish culture, and the book's importance in documenting the gradually-changing role of U.S. women. The young Aline Griffiths, was a real person who later, as an author married to a Spanish nobleman, somewhat fictionalized her true-to-life experiences. A bright, remarkably-well educated, beautiful young American at the beginning of the 1940's, she departed from traditional women's work as a high-fashion New York model to take a daring, adventurous, downright-dangerous job spying for the Allies in just-post-Civil-War Spain. During World War II, Spain was not yet beginning to evolve into what it is today, not yet healed from its own war wounds from the late 1930's, an isolated nation still cut off from modernization, enabling the author to give us a picture of a far more traditional Spanish culture, during a repressive regime in many ways determined to keep it so. Aline Griffiths' vantage point was unique, an outsider accepted into many segments of Spanish society, trusted because of her beauty and charm.

World War II began as the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) ended, so Aline Griffiths arrived as huge social changes were about to occur. This book provides a superb peek into the "old" Spain, the Spain of high romance and extraordinarily traditional, now-antiquated values. Yet it is described in context of a delightfully novel-like autobiographical tale. Although it reads better than most spy fiction, one can take notes on Spanish culture on virtually every page. It is engrossing, culture-rich, and shows a young American girl from Pearl River, New York, doing the kinds of things of which only a grownup Nancy Drew type might have dreamed.

Willeford joined the Army when he was 16, in the depth of the Depression, and was assigned to the Air Corps. He spent most of his three-year hitch in Manila, "a place where interesting things can happen to a man." This memoir by the author of Miami Blues and The Burnt Orange Heresy is so brutally frank about drinking and whoring in the prePearl Harbor Army that it becomes hilarious when the author remarks, "If a man wasn't careful the Army could coarsen him, and I had to protect my sensitivity if I was ever going to write anything first-rate." Discharged in 1938, Willeford found himself in trouble with the police on Los Angeles's Skid Row, and decided to reenlist. His autobiography is hardboiled and certainly authentic, but short on substance.

Willeford joined the U.S. Army in 1935 at the age of 16. He spent time in the Philippines, in the air corps, and later at Fort Riley, in the cavalry. He recalls some of the less savory aspects of the Depression army, and explains in great detail just how the enlisted men lived. In the four years covered here, he fits in about as many sexual, alcoholic, and military adventures as a young man could reasonably hope to survive. Although this memoir captures the spirit of the prewar army well, its tone of mild braggadocio and its uninspired prose will limit its appeal. "The Stuff No-one Else Writes About"

I borrowed the title of this review from another reviewer, who hit the nail on the head.

All I can add is that the "stuff" Willeford writes about is working class life, and at nearly the bottom of the barrel at that. This particular stuff needs, and needed, to be written about.

Back in the 1930s, the time period of this book, people knew there were social classes, and some artists (e.g., Steinbeck, James T. Farrell) tried to show the life of the lower ones. In doing so they provided a nice balance in how Americans saw the country.

Today most mass media will not touch working class life. All they show us is upper middle and above. They foster the notion that everyone here is doing just fine, Jack. In fact, more and more people are dropping off the bottom of the middle class into poverty these days. Willeford's two autobiographies tell us a lot about what it's like to be down there once your drop is over.

And he does this in a style that succeeds in Earnest Hemingway's program of stripping down the language better than Hemingway did. in Hemingway's work there is always a sense of the craftsman behind the character, self-consciously paring away language according to his stylistic ideology. Willeford just tells his story in language anyone can follow, period. Little is said about the biographee's emotions in the process, so you are free to provide your own. "How would I feel in that situation?" you find yourself asking again and again. This fosters reader involvement, and also does something else. If smart young Willeford had to do stuff that gross and/or boring to survive, and I am able to understand "there but for fortune go I", then gradually I get a truly visceral idea of just how desperate the times being written of really were.

We need this idea. It might help us want to do something to stop the current slide into recession or worse.

Incredible book

There is nobody like Charles Willeford. This book will break your heart in places, make you laugh out loud in others, and affirm that life is tragic, painful, and comical all at the same time.

Willeford is the King of Deadpan. He's so deadpan that some people have speculated whether he was amoral or sociopathic (Lawrence Block wrote an interesting piece about this, correctly concluding that Willeford was just happily fooling everybody).

Here's a classic example from _Something About a Soldier_ of Willeford's skill at expressing empathy without a lot of figurative hand-wringing--but the message is still there: Stationed in the Phillipines, he witnesses the impoverished Baluga natives roasting and devouring a horse that had died of tuberculosis. To them, it was great feast and celebration. Willeford writes, "Once a man has witnessed life in a Baluga village...he will never be able to feel sorry for himself again. He knows how awful life can truly become. I continue to gripe about things, and I probably always will, but I also, deep inside of me, that my life is good."

If you're uninformed, get busy and read everything this man ever wrote. I miss this amazing literary genius, and so do all the great writers who looked up to him over the decades.

A soldier's story.

Charles Willeford was a decorated hero in WWII. But when it came to compiling his memoirs of military life, he chose to recount his experiences in the pre-war peacetime army, both stateside and overseas in the Philippines.

This book is the author's autobiography covering the years 1935 to 1939 or ages 16 to 20, when he served as an enlisted man first in the Army Air Corps and later in the cavalry.

Since Charles Willeford was a natural born storyteller, it's no surprise Something about a Soldier is an easy and interesting read. Through dozens of anecdotes related by Willeford in his patented deadpan style, a funny but not particularly pretty picture emerges. Senseless bureacracy, out of touch officers, mindless work and counterproductive regulations all conspired to make the author's experience during those years a less than satisfying one.

But there were a couple positive aspects to this time in Willeford's life as well. He had plenty of time to devote to improving his mind through reading. And he enjoyed a very active sex life thanks to the always available prostitutes, camp followers and other willing women that were part of Willeford's military experience. Though to be honest, many of the sexual exploits described sound less than appetizing.

Something about a Soldier is an entertaining and well written memoir. The anecdotes recounted reveal a lot about army life and many of them are pricelessly funny. Worthwhile reading for all Charles Willeford fans.

Hugely enjoyed this book. Providing insight, context and a historical background into the simple minded, sound bite driven American polical environment though it was written over 50 years ago. Reading this book has provided a safe haven in reason from this 2016 campaign riddled in short sightedness, showboating and pathologically self-absorbed narcicism.

There and back again (but not on the Long Island Expressway)

I first picked up The Power Broker when it was published 25 years ago. Since then I've re-read it three or four times over the years. It is a true monument to Caro that this book has remained in print in both hc and pb over these years.
This massive work is at the same time a biography of Robert Moses and the metropolitan New York City area. Moses, originally a reformer and a true public servant, somehow became tainted by the power entrusted to him. It was his way or no way -- and once he became firmly entrenched there was no "no way." A typical Moses tactic: design a great public work (bridge, for example) and underestimate the budget. A bargain sure to be approved and funded by the politicians! Then run out of money halfway through construction. The rest of the money will surely be forthcoming because no politician wants to be associated with a half-finished and very visibile "failure" -- it's much better to take credit for an "against the odds" success.
I grew up in NYC at the tail end of Moses' influence and I remember the 1964 Worlds Fair in NYC vividly, especially a "guidebook" that lionized Moses' construction prowess. In school, Moses' contribution was also taught (always positively) when we had units covering NYC history. If nothing else, Moses understood the power of good publicity, and used tactics later adopted by the current mayor (King Rudy) to control the press and public opinion. This book brings Moses back to human scale and deconstructs (no pun intended) his impact on the city.
The book is long, detailed, and compelling. Great beach reading -- especially at Jones Beach! Now that it is celebrating its 25th anniversary, a new retrospective afterword from the author would be appreciated (perhaps a reprint of the article he wrote for the New Yorker a few years ago on how he wrote the book).
An interesting counterpoint to this biography of Moses is The Great Bridge by David McCollough. This story of a great public works project is also a biography of the Roeblings, the family of engineers who designed and built it. They shared Moses' singlemindedness, but the methods and results had far less negative results.

Am awesome book, but even more useful as an exercise ...

There really needs to be a Kindle version of this. An awesome book, but even more useful as an exercise weight. Read 10 pages then do a few curls, repeat several times per chapter. You will come away with a keen understanding of the man who built much of NYCs infrastructure as well as a set of biceps like no other.

A public work in itself

I was attracted to this book because I thought, now that suburban sprawl is a fait accompli and we have all decided it's a bad thing, we might want to understand the philosophy behind it in the first place. There is that in this book, and so much more. Basically, Moses never really grasped that things had changed since he first built parkways to Long Island in the 1920s. He thought of driving principally as a recreational activity, or a means of reaching recreation. It never occurred to him that people would be using them to go long distances to and from work every day. And he refused to listen to any voice beside his own. More than anything else, this towering book is a uniquely American story in the vein of Citizen Kane (as well as all the other narratives referred to above). It's easy to paraphrase a line from that film and say that if Moses hadn't had power, he might have been a truly great man. Ironically enough, Caro pays tribute to Moses best by having done this biography determinedly and exhaustively ... the way Moses himself would have done such a job. And his storytelling skills are such that you go from rooting for Moses in the '20s as he fights the Gatsby-types to build his state parks to rooting (often unsuccessfully) against him in the '50s as he arrogantly bulldozes highways through city neighborhoods and lets the machine scalp the poor through his "housing" program. All the way, Moses's best and worst qualities - a twisted genius - are laid bare. If I had to say something negative, it would be to second the comments that there's still more to the story ... I'd love to see an uncut version, even if it were 2,000 pages. And I'd love to see a movie, too.

Historian writing sincerely about his own craft.

The book by Marc Bloch - ''The historian's craft'' - this book shows the limitations of a history as a independent scientific discipline together with its role in the society. Author discusses also the advantages of history, which was his great passion. I really appreciate this book and the author's style of writing. Unfortunately Prof. Bloch did not finish this book, because he sacrificed his life for his own country - he was a scholar and a hero. I do not agree with Prof. Marc Bloch at one point when he claims that human being changes with time. In my opinion this is not the truth and eventually I agree with such figures, like Thucydides and Niccolo Machiavelli.

Epitaph to a Learned Man

Marc Bloch--veteran of World Wars I and II, historian, professor, writer, French patriot--entreats us in this spare volume to maintain our objectivity, to interpret history with the skepticism of the journalist and the scientific method of the researcher. He identifies some of the pitfalls, the improperly translated idiom, the anthropomorphism of time and place, and relying too heavily on the written accounts of earlier historians, as means by which the understanding of historical events can be skewed. And history must be viewed as a continuum, a rolling cause-and-effect leading from then until now and beyond, events which seldom fit easily into our need to categorize them by fixed dates. But then, historians already know these things, so of what value is "The Historian's Craft" today?

There is a poignancy to this book that Marc Bloch may not have anticipated from his moment in time, but looking back toward the era in which he wrote, the reader can see "The Historian's Craft" as Bloch's attempt to instill order and sanity into the turbulent and almost inexplicably surreal fall of France during World War II. I interpret this book as his salve, his struggle to maintain objectivity during the madness he observed as the Nazis overwhelmed his country. Older than fifty now, having earned the right to a quiet life in academia but refusing to leave his beloved France, Block joined the Resistance, fought against the Nazis, was captured, tortured and killed. And so, "The Historian's Craft" becomes a record to help us interpret Marc Bloch's life and the era of occupied France, as well as lessons in craft from a learned man.

Bloch wrote: ...a generation represents only a relatively short phase. Longer phases are called civilizations."

Everyone, at least once in their life, has questioned the usefulness of their career. Marc Bloch, a French economic historian, discovered that this moment could be inspired by a mere inquiry: "Daddy, what is the use of history?" Bloch's answer to his son's innocuous question provides the intellectual back-bone to his study: The Historian's Craft. In this book, Bloch's analysis provides students and professional historians alike with a how-to guide to history, but also, probably most importantly, a poignant defense of the craft itself.

Bloch attempts to lift history from its tradition of romantic storytelling, excessive specialization, and its preoccupation with politics, by re-aligning its practices within the broad realm of intellectual inquiry, most importantly science. "There is then," Bloch writes, "just one science of men in time. It requires us to join the study of the dead and of the living." While Bloc concedes that "human actions...elude mathematical measurement," Bloch argues that any intellectual endeavor that explains change over time is historical in its essence. Geology, for example, explains the processes of erosion and plate-tectonics, within the context of time. Thus, understanding the nature of the earth's crust, in relationship to the deteriorating effects of time, is the purpose of studying geology. In contrast to geology, Bloch explains, "it is men that history seeks to grasp." History like many other sciences, are tools for intellectual inquiry. When man is determined to be the subject in question, history, according to Bloch, is the most appropriate tool. The creation of a lake by a man-made dam serves as an excellent example. The inquisitor who is interested in understanding the events that led to the creation of the man-made lake would be better served by analyzing the economic, political, and social phenomena that led to the creation of the dam, rather than the invisible natural geologic processes that led to the creation of the lake. In this sense, history, in comparison to the highly respected intellectual pursuits of hard science, remains an important fixture in intellectual inquiry.

So Bloch has decisively argued that the subject of history is men. But what context should historians study men? Time, according to Bloch, "is a concrete and living reality with an irreversible onward rush." The harsh reality of this constant, influx- producing force provides the logic behind all major historical events. Thus, history cannot merely be a "science of men," or the "science of past," but is instead the "science of men in time," or man's evolution within the context of time. In relation to this, Bloch additionally believes that historians should "join the study of the dead and of the living." While many world leaders would like to make changes to certain contemporary societies, the cultural traditions of a civilization, which pull against reform, are deeply rooted in the fabric of the past. Thus, Bloch argues that man, "remains a more or less willing prisoner," to human institutions that developed throughout history. A historian or even more importantly a world leader that remains unaware of the controlling function of the past, will fail miserably in his or her attempts to improve the future. Likewise, Bloch argues that historians must also be aware of how the present influences our understanding of the past. Bloch believes that "the knowledge of the present bears even more immediately upon the understanding of the past." Bloch states that since historians do their work "backwards," from present to past, a false understanding of the present could lead a historian on a fool's errand in his analysis of the past. Thus, the past and the present, both functions of time, serve as the foundational reference points that all histories should be written from.

His contribution to historical literature and historiography has been immense and influential. The final intellectual testament of his tragically shortened life and the answer to his son's question: "What is the use of history?" has fascinated modern historians and students alike. Ultimately, Bloch left his historiographic masterpiece to future students of history as inspirational guide that acknowledges the characteristics and tactics of history as an intellectual endeavor.

The most elegant translation

The Tale of Genji boasts rights as the first novel ever written, but the road getting here has been rough. The novel is nearly a millenium old, and a translation usually has to go through two hands (the Japanese translator and the English) before we have the pleasure of reading.

The first translation, by Arthur Waley, reads beautifully and still holds a place in many fans' hearts. It has also been liberally edited and sometimes loosely translated; one wonders how much of the original work remains.

Two recent translations compete for top honors. The more recent one, by Royall Tyler, boasts helpful footnotes and background notes. It also takes great pains to render the novel in stylistic terms that are very close to the original. At the same time, it can be hard to follow at times, since many of Shikibu's authorial conventions have been preserved.

Edward Siedensticker offers good accuracy, with prose that's elegant and precise. He really excels with the book's frequent poetry; his translations are the best in English. While his complete translation is true, he doesn't take Tyler's cares to translate Shikibu's stylistic quirks. His translation is, then, more immediately readable. But more footnotes wouldn't have been a hindrance.

I admire Royal Tyler's achievement, but I enjoy Siedensticker's. Perhaps the best course of action is to read both (if you have the time). Otherwise, it may be a good idea to compare passages and see which you prefer. In either case, Siedensticker's poems are indispensible.

Kindle Edition is NOT the Waley Translation

This Kindle edition is a translation by Kencho Suematsu, NOT Arthur Waley, and I would not recommend it to anyone who wants to read The Tale of Genji. There are far far better translations available. The Kindle version is falsely labeled, in my opinion.

Don't buy this book -- read on.

The Tale of Genji, and this (Seidensticker) translation, is without doubt one of the finest reading experiences one can possibly have. What I want to review is what the publisher has done with this book.
I purchased this copy in June 2001, and on the frontispiece it says 4th printing. There are so many printing errors in this book it mars what might otherwise have been a sublime reading experience. I will give you just one example: on page 113 a line reads:
"Then came Koremitsu's house, he would be called a lecher and a child theif [sic]."
Now this made no sense to me, either as a sentence or in the narrative context, so I consulted the abridged edition (which I also have). The line should have read:
"Then came Koremitsu's unsettling report. He must act. If he were to take her from her father's house, he would be called a lecher and a child thief."
That's a total of 14 words missing between "Koremitsu's" and "house".
This is the most serious error in the book, but there are many others, and I've only read 1/4th of the book so far. This Everyman Library edition, the publisher boasts, uses acid-free cream-wove paper with a sewn full cloth binding. It's a beautifully designed book. If only the publishers had given as much attention to the soul of this book as to its body, it might have been worth the price I paid for it.
Books should come with a warranty, really.

At 14, Lamb wrote a series of stories about the Milwaukee Braves, geographically distant successors to his beloved Boston Braves; the stories appeared in the Milwaukee Journal and helped clinch the author's fascination with baseball. He went on to become a foreign correspondent with the Los Angeles Times and an author ( The Africans ; The Arabs ), and in 1989 decided to tour the nation's 15 minor leagues. This workmanlike book is the result. Lamb concerns himself with the franchises, the owners, stadiums past and present, relations between clubs and the major league teams that subsidize most of them, managers and coaches and, too infrequently, with the players themselves. He is capable of superb writing, as in an eloquent encomium to the Middle West, but does not sustain this level throughout. Photos not seen by PW.

He makes a road trip with the Stockton Ports, then travels through such "lower league" towns as El Paso, Texas, Elmira, New York, and Salt Lake City, Utah. Along the way he visits with ex-big leaguers Warren Spahn and "Hurricane" Hazle. Serviceable nostalgia and local color that will complement large sports collections.

A kind of minor league baseball 'Travels with charley'

As I read this book, I was reminded a bit of Steinbeck's old book, "Travels with Charley." In both books, the reader is treated to a commentary of "life on the road." However, in this case it's following the author as he travels across country in his RV to watch numerous minor league baseball games. How many of us as baseball fans secretly wish we could do just that? How many of us however actually have the time and more importantly the finances to do this?
While the book is dated, it still is well worth a read. The author describes the dreams of numerous minor league ballplayers to make it to "the Show," but points out only one out of every fourteen actually makes it to the big leagues. And not only is this book about their stories, but the stories of numerous minor league towns, and the people the author encounters. He also gets to meet and talk with several of his boyhood idols, players from the 1957 Milwaukee Braves. Some of the stories of these people are sad, some hilarious, but all of them are quite entertaining. I've recommended this book to a friend with a son who aspires to be a "big leaguer" someday, because it entails some of the hardships involved in getting there. This book is a travelogue of places where time has seemingly stood still and the players are gods, even if they are only minor leaguers pursuiing a dream.

A Tremendous Journey

Stolen Season is a very enjoyable read that chronicles a Summer of writer David Lamb's life. Badly needing a break from his job as a foreign journalist, Lamb decides to fulfill a life long dream of driving accross the country visiting as many minor league baseball parks as he can. Although baseball games are the intended stops, his encounters with the people around the country are just as important, making this an enjoyable read whether you are a baseball fan or not. This book has inspired me to make an effort to visit more minor league parks where the game is still just a game. Make it a point to check this book out.

Book 1, Interview with the Vampire, opens with the seductive purr of F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus) stating, "I was a 25-year-old man when I became a vampire, and the year was 1791." And so our ultimate antihero, Louis, begins the elaborate retelling of his long, tortured life as a vampire. Winding through the ages, from New Orleans to Paris, we follow Louis and his undying mentor, Lestat, as they feed on humans, whet their carnal appetites, and uncover an underworld of vampire brethren.

Book 2, The Vampire Lestat, brings us up to date, with Lestat waking from his earthen slumber to join the ranks of rock superstardom before sitting down to share the tale of his own haunting initiation into the vampire world. Michael York (Cabaret) puts his wonderfully fluid, cosmopolitan voice to good use, adding a dash of sly humor to this fast-paced, satisfying blend of sex and blood and rock and roll.

Book 3, The Queen of the Damned, takes us back, all the way back to ancient Egypt, exposing the origins of the vampire way. Narrating in eerily serene and gracious tones, Kate Nelligan (The Prince of Tides) leads us gently down this bloody path of immortal desires. David Purdham gives the voice of Lestat a wistful quality, tinged with an evil relish that exposes the master vampire's sanguine tastes.

Anne Rice has continued her Vampire Chronicles beyond these three novels, but that shouldn't make this collection any less tempting to either the undead initiate or certified vampire junkie. --George Laney

Chronicles of the vampires

Anne Rice revamped the vampire-horror genre with the publication of "Interview with the Vampire," a supernational drama from the vampire's own mouth. It became an unexpected hit, and spawned a series of sequels that came to be known as the Vampire Chronicles. The first three books of the series are compiled here, and arguably remain her best.

"Interview With the Vampire" is the story of Louis, a grieving young widower and plantation owner, whose life is turned upside down when he meets the charming vampire Lestat. Lestat offers him a way out: become a vampire. Louis accepts, but once it's done, he finds that vampirism is more than he bargained for -- especially for his conscience.

"The Vampire Lestat" takes a totally different tack, showing us the world through the enigmatic, charming Lestat's eyes. After years of dormancy, Lestat wakes up in time for the early MTV years of the 1980s, becoming a rock star in the tradition of Ozzy and Black Sabbath. And like Louis, Lestat relates his long life's story -- how he became a vampire, his wanderings over the earth, and his investigations into the origins of vampirism itself...

"Queen of the Damned" builds on that research. Lestat's metal music has caused quite a bit of mayhem -- but not this much before: Akasha, Egyptian queen and mother of all vampires, has reawoken from her comalike sleep. The lesser vampires are having strange dreams, some are being murdered by the ruthless queen. Apparently she wants to kill virtually all men. What is more, Akasha has taken a shine to the roguish Lestat himself...

Vampiric autobiography is a given in Anne Rice's bibliography -- she has plenty of bloodsuckers telling us about their lives. But Lestat and Louis's were not just the first ones, but perhaps the most compelling and rich, especially since the two had such radically different viewpoints -- including of one another. Is Lestat a heartless fiend, or a roguish good-craving bad boy? I'd lean towards the latter, to be honest.

The first two books are quite personal -- one is Louis recounting his own miserable life and un-life. Then we get Lestat, a radically different viewpoint, a guy who enjoys his un-life even more than his mortal existance. Finally, there's an epic view of all vampires, throughout history, from the ancient Egyptian queen to the modern biker vamps.

Despite the more controversial recent novels, Anne Rice's first Vampire Chronicles are often reckoned to be modern horror classics. Rich, intriguing and far deeper than you'd think vampire fiction would be.

Great edition of Anne Rice's infamous Vampire saga

I love that the first three (and argueably best) books of the Vampire Chronicles were combined with sleek and well designed cover art. The cover was actually taken from the short-lived Broadway musical, 'Lestat', and this was made as an obvious merchandise tie in. It was nice to see, nonetheless.

It's of a much better quality than the mass market paperback versions and a better deal at $13, since each mass market edition will cost you about $7. The book itself is rather heavy (about 4 lbs), so if you have weak wrists it may be a struggle for you to hold, but text is large and easy to read, the ink does not smudge like the mass market editions do, and the pages are thin and smooth.

If you're contemplating 'plunging into the stream' (the words that the Vampire Lestat himself 'lives' by) by giving Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles a try, than buy this particular version. I can't recommend it enough.

Awesome book. This is among the best vampire stories ever written. If you're into vampires this is a must read.
Leatherbound is very classy.
