Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956), was an American journalist, essayist, magazine editor, satirist, and acerbic critic of American life and culture. Mencken, known as the "Sage of Baltimore", is regarded as one of the most influential American writers and prose stylists of the first half of the 20th century. He became a reporter for the Baltimore Morning Herald in 1899, then moved to The Baltimore Sun in 1906. He continued to contribute to the Sun full time or occasionally until 1948, when he ceased to write. In 1908, he became a literary critic for the magazine The Smart Set, and in 1924, he and George Jean Nathan founded and edited The American Mercury. He co-authored a number or works with Nathan including The Artist (1912), Heliogobalus (1920) and The American Credo: A Contribution Toward the Interpretation of the National Mind (1920). About the Author
H. L. Mencken (1880-1956) was an American journalist and author. Skilled in satire, he was famous for the pungent criticism he aimed at all complacent attitudes and for his vigorous attacks on the shams and stuffiness of his day. Among his works are Ventures into Verse, Treatise on the Gods, and his autobiography Happy Days.

This supplement and the original are supposed to be the fun ones to read, and the second supplement is supposed to be the tedious one. I am finding this one tedious, I'm afraid. I dread the next one. Since time marches on, and this can no longer be considered the last word on the subject if it ever was, I think today's reader would be better off getting the 1980's amalgamation of the three books which has some newer material and does a pretty fair job of imitating Mencken's style in the additions.

A wonderful, enjoyable read.

We use American English to write. We use American English to speak. American English is the means by which half the world population communicates with each other. So why not spend a little time understanding how the American language came into being. How American English was scorned by England for so many years (and still to this day), and how American English eventually overpowered British English. After reading this book, and then stepping back to see the flow of history, you will surely discover the power of culture and its influence upon language, and vice versa. I think this is a must read for anyone who wishes to become a craftsman in the field of writing.
