British writer Beauman's meticulous literary biography focuses on the interconnections between Forster's life (1879-1970) and his novels. She argues provocatively that the stimulus and model for Maurice , his posthumously published novel of homosexual love, was Ernest Merz, a gay acquaintance of Forster who hanged himself. Howards End , whose themes are the importance of rootedness and the spirit of place, emerges, in Beauman's scrutiny, as an elegy to Forster's birthplace which was demolished to make way for a railroad. She calls the novel presciently modern in its contrasting of "Thatcherism . . . the competitive instinct, the pay-your-way mentality" with the liberal values Forster espoused. His hostility to Anglo-Indian imperialists, and his thwarted love for his friend and Latin pupil, Syed Ross Masood, shed light on A Passage to India , the ultimate expression of Forster's pessimism about achieving meaningful personal relations. Much of this pessimism, according to Beauman, derived from Forster's "tentacle-like" relationship with his over-possessive, smothering mother Lily. Photos.

That Forster wrote what Beauman considers "five of the greatest novels in our language before he was 35" is all the more remarkable considering he lived with his mother most of his life and constantly struggled against depression, lack of self-worth, and homosexuality. Beauman ( A Very Great Profession , Trafalger, 1991) prefers a more intimate "Morgan" to objective analysis of Howards End or Passage to India . The strengths of his book are precise attention to family and friends, Forster's daily life at Cambridge, and interactions with the Bloomsbury Group. Forster's great theme of liberating the ossified English traveling scene in Greece, Italy, and India receives much attention, but Beauman diminishes the distance between imagination and reality so much it seems Forster merely recorded events in his life rather than created novels. Nevertheless, Beauman's extensive knowledge of Edwardian England and Forster's work makes this a valuable biography.

Physically unprepossessing and something of a Milquetoast, E. M. Forster nonetheless ranks as a giant of modern English literature. Drawing both on Forster's published works and on the most recently available archival material, Beauman produces a fully rounded, nuanced portrait that surpasses P. N. Furbank's respected 1981 biography. Forster led an unheroic life--in the generally understood definition of hero. In fact, until very late in his life, he was under the thumb of, or at least in the shadow of, his domineering mother. But, as Beauman shows, he rebelled against his situation, though in his own quiet way, all the while producing some of the early twentieth-century's most important fiction. Forster's early grammar school experiences were comforting to him, but his later ones were not; at Cambridge University, though, he found himself, and his affiliation with that institution was to last throughout his entire life. Beauman discusses what Forster's travel to Italy and to India did to--and for--him, and, like other biographers and critics, she investigates Forster's disinclination to continue writing fiction after the publication of his masterpiece, A Passage to India. Expect demand for this excellent biography in light of the recent spate of movies made from Forster's novels. Brad Hooper

An outing to be relished - an inspirational and superb read.

If one purpose of a literary biography is to inspire the reader to return to the works of the subject of the biography with renewed enthusiasm then Ms Beauman has succeeded admirably. But her work is also a timely reminder of the significance of an artist to the health of a civilized society. In this age of "outcomes", "product" and "prioritization" Mr Forster's speech as a resident honorary fellow of King's College Cambridge when proposing a toast to the health of the college must stand as a delicious ironical instance of the artist as just being - and that being enough. He said " I do not belong here at all. I do nothing here whatsoever. I hold no college office, I attend no committee, I sit on no body, however solid, not even on the Annual Congregation. I co-opt not, nor am I co-opted. I teach not, neither do I think, and even the glory in which I am now arranged was borrowed from another college for the occasion." Forster's relationship with his mother together with his homosexuality loom large in Ms Beauman's analysis which is not to say that her consideration of the works is less than thorough. Indeed, her research into the genesis and development of PASSAGE TO INDIA is especially detailed and illuminating. The Forster story by Ms Beauman is one that is told with understanding, warmth and a deep humanity that was a characteristic of the subject himself. Of particular interest was when the writer, Beauman, addresses the reader,you, expressing some doubt about including rather revelatory and intimate details of Forster's sexual adventures. This is an instance of ".... on the other hand it could be said..." that was a trademark of Forster's method. A most enjoyable read. Dare I say I came away from reading it a better person?

Second Best

With the standards set so high by Furbank (isn't it telling that the cover added to this web page is the cover of Furbank's biography and not that of Beauman?) there is quite little one can do. One can always go wrong, however, and to some degree this is what the book does. I found its concentration on Forster's homosexuality (can he be outed any more after the publication of Maurice in 1971?) quite tiresome and insistence on stressing his biography and its influence on his works not always substantiated. You can find all the important details here but if you want a good read as well, take the hint from this web page and get yourself a copy of Furbank's biography instead.

Superfluous Bio

E.M. Forster doesn't need multiple biographers. P.N. Furbank wrote the authoritative work and in it you'll find everything worth knowing about Forster that he hasn't already revealed in his own writings.
Gay writers of the past, especially those who remained in the closet, seem to attract biographers, which puzzles me.
There's also a plethora of critical studies of Forster, a writer who doesn't require "interpretation" in the way that Proust or Joyce do.
Ah, well, the Jane Austen industry has spawned even more verbiage about a writer whose bio is mostly lost in the snows of time and whose books don't require a library shelf of critical studies. But Jane has become a Rohrshach (sp?) blot to her dazed admirers in a way that Forster could never become for his.
Maybe Masterpiece Theater and James Ivory are the major reasons there are so many books about these two worthy novelists. How much better it would be to ignore the movies and TV and read their books, not books about them.
