Under the aegis of the late Jim Henson, here are nine stories that first appeared as The Storyteller TV series--traditional folk and fairy tales refreshed for a modern audience. Released now as an adult book, this appealing, abundantly illustrated offering is just as suitable for young readers. Minghella looks to a Tuscan proverb (``The tale is not beautiful if nothing is added to it'') for inspiration and, like Italo Calvino in Italian Folktales, adds to and alters the stories, most already available in standard collections--``Hans My Hedgehog'' and ``The Luck Child,'' for example. Some of his variations lack resonance on paper (the troll in ``The True Bride'' speaks in scrambled phrases like ``I'm founded dumb'') and distract from the prime-time themes of fear, trust, fidelity, etc. Most, however, are interesting even when they deviate from the classic story line (Hans has soft bristles and a devoted mother) and often enough Minghella's own language sets the tone: ``in a week with two Fridays,'' he writes, or ``Suddenly everyone could live forever'' or ``Beggars are never what they seem.'' Darcy May's 41 full-color paintings, rendered in a subtle palette, are elegant, expressive compositions faithful to the spirit of the stories and kin to several old favorites. Image for image, they don't quite match the spiritual quality and inner flow of, say, Nonny Hogrogian's (juvenile) The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs, and they lack the penetrating aspect of the (much longer) Segal/Sendak collaboration The Juniper Tree. So *that's* what the Griffin was saying!

Just so you know, all 9 episodes of The Storyteller are now out on a single DVD - something many of us have been waiting for for years. This book is, I think, the original screenplay of Jim Henson's Storyteller series because it follows *very* closely to the stories and dialogue seen on TV. The illustrations are also taken from the show and are very nice. The written word is different from television, however, and these stories take on a different light often in one versus the other, and there are some expansions here that didn't make the final editing cuts.
My kid and I love "The Storyteller" series, and this book is a pleasant addition for bedtime reading.

Almost Perfection

Perfection is the TV series that preceded this book. Of course, I must gloat and say that I knew all those many years ago that Anthony Minghella was the most exquisite writer I had ever heard/read. His words coupled with the genius of Jim Henson and company made for the best (no exaggeration) thing ever to be broadcast on television. To be able to read the words from these shows and have them readily available on your bookshelf is heaven. I've been recommending the TV series and this book for years. I still recommend it today.

One of the best pieces of magic ever written

Many years ago my family sat around the television, wide eyed and filled with magic; we were watching the Jim Henson Storyteller series. We waited and waited for it to reappear one day- to no avail. But FINALLY, a book! To be able to relive the "hugs and snoodles" of Hans My Hedghog, the stone soup tale of a "Story Short"- all of it beautifully, and creatively written, with illustrations to match- will take you back to your childhood. I find it hard to believe this has yet to be discovered. Don't miss the videos that are now out, at long last!

About the Author
Allen Ginsberg was born in Newark, New Jersey, the son of poet and teacher Louis Ginsberg. In 1948, he received a B.A. degree from Columbia University. Ginsberg began writing poetry while still in school and first gained wide public recognition in 1956 with the long poem Howl. Howl has had a stormy history. When it was first recited at poetry readings, audiences cheered wildly. It was published by Lawrence Ferlinghetti's City Lights Books and printed in England. Before the printed copies could be distributed, however they were seized by U.S. custom officials as obscene. After a famous court case in which the poem was found not to be obscene, the work sold rapidly and Ginsberg's reputation was assured. Regarded as the foremost port of the Beat generation (as group of rebellious writers who opposed conformity and sough intensity of experience), Ginsberg's work is concerned with many subjects of contemporary interest, including drugs, sexual confusion, the voluntary poverty of the artist and rebel, and rejection of society. He is a poet with a significant message, and his criticism of American society is part of a long tradition of American writers who have questioned their country's values. Ginsberg received numerous honors, including a Woodbury Poetry Prize, a National Institute of Arts and Letters Award, and a National Book Award for poetry. Ginsberg, ever the Bohemian, had numerous occupations throughout his lifetime including dishwasher, porter, book reviewer, and spot welder. Allen Ginsberg succumbed to cancer in April 1997. 030

From hipster to so-called Godfather of Punk, William Burroughs has lived a controversial life as a leading member of the Beat Generation and a daring writer of psychedelic literary experiments, but, when he reached his seventieth birthday in 1984, it was almost as if he had been overtaken by respectability. Burroughs was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1914 as the grandson of the man who invented the adding machine and a descendant of Robert E. Lee of Civil War fame. He attended Harvard University. Later while living a bohemian life in association with such Beat writers as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, Burroughs became addicted to morphine and under the pseudonym William Lee published his first novel, Junkie, in 1953 as half of an Ace Double Books paperback. The novel escaped critical notice but may be seen now as the forerunner of his later fiction with its introduction of many of the themes, settings, characters, and amoral postures that became prominent with Naked Lunch (1959) and its successors. Refused by the American publishers to whom Burroughs submitted the manuscript, Naked Lunch first appeared in Paris under the Olympia Press imprint in 1959, the same year that Burroughs was permanently cured of his addiction. Naked Lunch might have remained ignored had not Mary McCarthy and Norman Mailer called attention to the work at the International Writers Conference held in Edinburgh in 1962. Burroughs's raw subject matter and seeming lack of discipline have alienated some of the more academic and genteel literary critics. Naked Lunch was followed by three additional novels about the Nova crime syndicate-The Soft Machine (1961), The Ticket That Exploded (1962), and Nova Express (1964), which make use of overlapping characters and motifs. With The Wild Boys of 1971, Burroughs began to develop a new style more accessible to the general reader. Although Cities of the Red Night (1981) received mixed reviews, it was praised by such Burroughs experts as Jennie Skerl and Robert Burkholder as perhaps the best of his more recent novels. Of The Place of Dead Roads (1983) is true to Burroughs's various obsessions with guns, homosexuality, and the terror produced by people who are addicted to power and control. Today much of the psychedelic effect of Burroughs's fiction appears to be an illusion that masks rather deliberate methods of composition. These include "cut-out" techniques, pastiche, and the deliberate trying-out of styles derived from popular fiction genres to create literary montages that owe as much to fantasy and science as to the surrealism of avant-garde literature.

An Amazing WEALTH of Writing Advice

I've been having an ongoing flirtation with the "Beat Generation" this year, having read Diane Di Prima, Anne Waldman, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, among others. When I stumbled across this set of audio CD's, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. To hear these giants of their generation reading their own works was a dream come true.

The title "First Thought, Best Thought" was the phrase that poet Allen Ginsberg used to describe spontaneous and fearless writing--a way of "telling the truth" that arises from naked and authentic experience.

Here's the gist of the CD's:

*William S. Burroughs teaching his breakthrough methods for generating fresh writing--including "the cut-up method," chance operations, and dreamwork.

*Diane di Prima on how to survive as an artist: preserving your sensibility, creating a supportive artistic community, getting published, self-publishing, and much more.

*Allen Ginsberg exploring every stage of poetic activity--from inspiration, to composition, to revision, to performing your poetry in public.

*Anne Waldman on the elements of the poet's craft--from the raw material of the words themselves to the many aspects of the poem in performance.

I must say that my own writing practice (after listening to these CD's a few times) has been profoundly enriched for the better. I've decided to publish my own poetry and I'm experimenting with the cut-up method suggested by Burroughs. It's a blast and funny has hell at times.

Of course, the Universe being a giant cross-reference, these authors led me to other great books: "Women of the Beat Generation" by Brenda Knight was an eye-opening read about the women of that generation.

I'd also recommend, "Fast Speaking Woman" by Anne Waldman and "Memoirs of a Beatnik" by Diane Di Prima. Ms. Waldman got her inspiration for the title poem from the Shaman, Maria Sabina. So, you MUST read about Maria Sabina in this amazing book, "Maria Sabina: Her Life and Chants" by Alvaro Estrada. Here's a taste of one of her chants:

This is a book about two remarkable men-Huey P. Long, a first-term United States Senator from the red-clay, piney woods country of northern Louisiana; and Charles E. Coughlin, a Catholic priest from an industrial suburb near Detroit. From modest origins, they rose together in the early years of the Great Depression to become the two most successful leaders of national political dissidence of their era.

About the Author
In addition to being a best selling textbook author, ALAN BRINKLEY is the Allan Nevins Professor of History and former Provost at Columbia University. He is the author of Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression, which won the 1983 National Book Award; The End of Reform: New Deal Liberalism in Recession and War; and Liberalism and its Discontents. His most recent books are "John F. Kennedy: The American Presidents Series: The 35th President, 1961-1963" and "The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century" both published recently. He was educated at Princeton and Harvard and taught previously at MIT, Harvard, and the City University Graduate School before joining the Columbia faculty In 1991. In 1998-1999, he was the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University. He won the Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Award at Harvard in 1987 and the Great Teacher Award at Columbia in 2003. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the board of trustees of the National Humanities Center and Oxford University Press, and chairman of the board of trustees of the Century Foundation. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris), and the University of Torino (Italy). He was the 1998-1999 Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University.

Dissident Movements in America - fascinating topic

Praise has been heaped on Alan Brinkley's book in the past, and after reading it, I fully concur with the accolades that past reviewers have granted to this book.

Brinkley sets the tone for his book from the title - "Voices of Protest". He focuses the book on the two main characters (and I do mean characters) present in the subtitle - Huey P. Long and Father Charles E. Couglin.

Brinkley treats us to a brief biographical sketch of each of these flamboyant and ebulent personalities. Long in his silk pajamas receiving a German envoy, and Coughlin stripping down from his clerical garb to a sweat soaked politician are just a couple of the many images that grab the reader during the progression of this discourse.

After explaining who these men were, he goes into their social & political movements - a fascinating tale of Long's "Share Our Wealth" plan, and an equally rich telling of Coughlin's "Golden Hour of the Little Flower". Brinkley has chosen the title Voices of Protest because both of these movements became major political dissident movements in Depression-era America.

Brinkley does a fantastic job of explaining, in historiographic terms, why these movements gathered such steam and were able to become massive social movements rather than just political fodder. In addition to detailing these two major oppositional voices to FDR's new deal, Brinkley also gives us a chapter on other movements that were equally critical of the New Deal, but not nearly as widespread.

I found it especially interesting how Brinkley explained that Long was the primary reason why both of these movements flourished - after his assassination in 1935, both movements really seemed to fall apart.

I enjoyed this book tremendously - it gives new insight into the way that political dissonance took hold in the 1930's and what a big part of American society these two political movements became.

This book offers a fascinating look at the political dissident movements that sprang forth in this country during the worst economic crisis in American history. Two of its most influential leaders discussed in this book are Huey Long and Father Coughlin. Both individuals are chronicled from their rise to power to their ultimate decline, which in Long's case came quickly.
Long and Coughlin could not have been more different in terms of who they were and where they came from. Both, however, were reaching a similar audience of millions who shared the same concerns. These weren't necessarily the people at the bottom of the economic scale, but rather those who had achieved some semblance of middle-class lifestyle and who desperately wanted to hold on to their success. They as a result had perhaps the most to lose during this turbulent time period.
Brinkley discusses each individual and how they got to their positions of power, such as their ability to exploit a new communicative medium, i.e. radio. Brinkley also adds the very critical element of giving the history of political dissident movements and how they come about.
One of the great what ifs of this era, at least to me, is what threat Long might have posed to Franklin Roosevelt's chances of winning reelection if Long had run for president in 1936. Long's career was cut short by an assassins bullet. Coughlin continued with his radio sermons and his attempt to create a kind of third party. But his influence was declining sharply as his message became much more radical and filled with bigotry. He never really posed the type of threat to the political order that Long might have.
To understand the appeal of their messages, one has to understand the times. Brinkley is fairly successful in dealing with this. There were many contradictions and insurmountable problems in each individual's own message. Personally, I think this country was fortunate to have a man like Franklin Roosevelt as its top executive as opposed to the possibility of a Huey Long presidency. Roosevelt may never have really been in that much trouble considering his own popularity even with many of the supporters of both Long and Coughlin.

A New View of Depression-era Demagogues

Alan Brinkley's book is a valuable addition to the history of the Great Depression. He has broadened and altered my perceptions of Huey Long and Father Coughlin dramatically. In addition to being populist demagogues, they both proposed radical economic reforms that put the New Deal to shame.
Long was not just a Louisiana or southern phenomenon. In 1936, when he was shot, he had created a national organization with the apparent intention of running for President. Brinkley has unearthed a poll commissioned by the Democratic National Committee that year that showed Long drawing as large a percentage of the vote as George Wallace or Ross Perot did in more recent elections. And the support was not limited to southern states. In Massachusetts, the DNC poll showed Long getting more than 13% of the vote.
Coughlin turned to fascism and overt anti-semetism only after his popularity began to wane when he split openly with Roosevelt. In his heyday he sounded like a socialist, proposing to replace the federal reserve with a true central bank and the nationalizing of the energy industry.
Brinkley thinks that Long, Coughlin and the California radical, Dr Townsend, pushed Roosevelt and the Congress into enacting a more comprehensive Social Security law than they would have otherwise.
Brinkley doesn't try to gloss over the dark side of Long's totalitarian rule in Louisiana or Father Coughlin's bloated ego and slide into ugly racism. But he does present a economic reformist aspect to their movements that is no longer known -- even among historians. It is more fashionable now to talk about the reform movements headed LaFollette and Norman Thomas as the sources of New Deal economic reform. While those may have been more highminded reformers, they never approached Long and Coughlin in mass appeal or in their power to frighten a President.

The author of Zionism and the Palestinians, 19171947 offers a cogent, controversial analysis of Israel's propaganda structures and the policies of the crucial formative years between 1948 and 1952. Utilizing Ben-Gurion's war diaries and other government archives, Flapan, former director of Arab affairs of Israel's left-wing Mapam party, posits that the 1948 War of Independence was not an inevitability forced upon a helpless Israel. He maintains that the socialist Zionist leadershipwho accepted Ben-Gurion's view that the Jewish state should be demographically homogeneous and geographically as extensive as possiblenot only encouraged and executed the expulsion of Palestinian Arabs but thwarted the creation of a Palestinian Arab state through a secret agreement with Abdallah of Transjordan. The annexation of the territory allocated for a Palestinian state was to be a first step in achieving Abdallah's dream of a British-supported Greater Syria; and, according to Flapan, the Arab states aimed not at liquidating the Jewish state but at preventing the implementation of this agreement. This disturbing work bears witness to the futility, and unconscionability, of addressing political problems by military means. (August

With the assistance of the recently published War Diaries of former Israeli Prime Minister David Ben Gurion and Israeli and Palestinian unpublished materials, Flapan attempts to debunk a number of Israeli-held beliefs regarding the historical development of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Joining other Israeli revisionist historians (e.g., Tom Segev, l949: the first Israelis, LJ 2/1/86), he casts Ben Gurion as the villain, who sought not compromise with the Palestinians but unmitigated geographical aggrandizement. Flapan attacks as "myth" the belief that Israel was threatened by the massive Arab neighboring armies and that Palestinians voluntarily left their homes. Though bound to create controversy, this is essential for those interested in Middle Eastern history or the politics of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Sanford R. Simha Flapan who is an Israeli of the MAPAM party debunks some of the most common spewed out myths of how the state of Israel was founded. Using the documentary record and declassified diaries of David Ben Gurion, the truth behind what really happened becomes clear. A must for anyone who wants to know the roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A Valuable Primer on the Middle East

Flapan's book divulges a lot of material that either wasn't known before or was known only to a few. I'm not certain, but he may have been the first author to write about the Arab diplomatic initiatives in 1948-49. However, I don't think he proved his claim that Zionists didn't intend to abide by the 1947 partition. Apart from Ben-Gurion, he didn't quote any Zionists from the Mapai-Mapam camp who made expansionist statements before the Arab states invaded--the Zionists reasonably concluded that they weren't bound by partition once the Arabs went to war to destroy partition.

Historical Genius

This is going to be short and sweet. The book is excellent for research. It gives you a history of the events that occurred throughout the time period of 1584 - 1775 and then includes primary documents. There are many different perspectives from one document to another. The Fault is My Own

This book is important, but dry - and I did my best, ( I find my "best" keeps changing so who knows for later) but I couldn't wade through it right now with any degree of mental stimulation from the authors - which was too bad, too as it dealt with the original documents and words of the participants at the time (which may have been part of problem). It reminds me of why I didn't like history when I was in school, and is the reason I'm going back now - at this point in time - to round out what I missed out of boredom then (and immaturity) to try to ferret out some better historians with a more flavorful flair for turning their writing talents loose. Nonetheless, I clearly see it's value; I know it is worthy of any serious historian, and the fault is my own. I encourage anyone who has thought about going back and refreshing American History to jump off and go for it. It's amazing. But if you go *here* to do it, be forewarned that it is very dated in it's writing format, and the same history can be found elsewhere in livelier form. It certainly wasn't dull while it was happening, and it shouldn't be tedious to read of it now.

There was one chapter (pg 186) that caught my attention - "Adam Smith, conclusion of the mercantile system". This man offered a no-nonsense approach to addressing the existing disparities in the "import/export" and therefore the "supply/demand" while establishing a vigorous American economy free from British interference. I hadn't read too much about him before. He was free with his thoughts about Britain "pretending" to make economic sense with their agendas, while in practice the opposite effect occurred, that of stifling the Colonists, and negating their own internal efforts to establish strong trade that benefited them not only as individual craftsmen, but as a nation aggregate. He could see an "imbalance" of trade and he could see the reason why: the colonists themselves were being used as cheap labor to produce for exportation, while "tools of the trade" that would allow expansion of talents were all but impossible to import, to effectively suppress competition from the colonists - as they would gain greater strength and skills from such purchases by manufacturers that had already fine-tuned some of the processes, thereby becoming a strong, independent nation and thereby also an inherent threat to the Motherland.

It's a very good book for scholars, but I didn't have the strength or patience at this point to digest all of it - although I probably will go back later and "take it on."

This well-documented and detailed account of German reunification spans the period from Yalta right up to 1990 when the Berlin Wall crumbled and East Germans poured through the crack to the West. Ash, author of numerous books on Central Europe, uses mostly German source documents, many of which became available only recently with the collapse of East Germany. The centerpiece of his book is the history of "ostpolitik" and how it fit into West German foreign policy goals, especially toward the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Ostpolitik is also analyzed as a strictly German response to the so-called German question. West Germany's relations with the United States take a back seat to Bonn's relations with the Soviet Union, East Germany, and Europe as a whole. A scholarly book that will also be of interest to the informed lay person, this is a superb choice for all academic libraries and larger public libraries.

Readable yet still scholarly account of Ostpolitik

Timothy Garton Ash has mastered the art of telling a story in an involving and interesting way, yet without sacrificing scholarly exactitude or resorting to simplification. In this, his most scholarly work, Garton Ash takes a hard look at Germany's political history in the centre of Europe, focusing on the theme of 'Ostpolitik' -- West Germany's policy of how to deal with the East: East Germany, Eastern Europe, and the Soviet Union. He presents two sides for every position, yet his own thinking permeates the book.
Because of its scholarly nature, this book is less accessible to the general audience than Garton Ash's other books, but for those interested in Germany's role in Europe's past, present and future, this book is an absolute must.

Will keep this book for years.

Excellent collection from a master writer of the creepy and funny. I liked his "Champion of the World" when I was young, and it's in this collection. "Pig" convinced me to be a vegetarian at the age of sixteen. He wasn't just good at kids' stories, he was great at adult writing also.

My mom loves this book and told me that I had to read it. I bought this book thinking it was going to be something that is was not.
Besides a few choice stories, this is not capturing my attention.
I did enjoy the small story, Lamb to slaughter though.

Why We Never Got President Hart

Make no mistake, Paul Taylor is a gifted author and a talented journalist.
This is the story of Paul Taylor the Washington Post reporter that broke the story of Gary Hart and Donna Rice and ended Hart's chances at being President in 1988. More importantly, Taylor asked "the question" that changed the way media cover politicians.
"Did you commit adultery?" There it is. Simple by today's standards of DNA dresses and DWI Presidents.
By understand what happened to Hart, you can see the Clinton circus coming a mile away. Taylor gives honest account of one of the first political/media "feeding frenzies."
If you believe that Taylor didn't understand the watershed moment in politics he was creating when he asked Hart "the question" (and I'm not sure I buy it) than you can really get into Taylor's first hand account of the campaign, the challenge, the chase and the media explosion that followed.
The reason I gave it four stars and not five, is that Taylor gets too preachy in the end by using his experience with the demise of Hart to tell us what is wrong with Presidential politics and how we need to fix it.
The fact that he is right has nothing to do with it. He is right, but that's not why I bought the book.
In short: good writing, good story, good reference point to understand the media/presidential politics relationship. Worth the time to read but not going to change history as Taylor clearly hoped it would.

Excellent Snapshots From An Accidental Player

Paul Taylor is the reporter who used the `A word' to derail Gary Hart's floundering campaign in 1988. It's rare that a reporter has as much influence over the nomination process, and the book provides a unique insight into the campaign from someone who, however briefly, had a very real effect on the election. At first it might seem that Taylor's emphasis on his own actions smack of delusions of grandeur, but he is really out to examine the roll of the press in a campaign, and only emphasizes his role early on because of his importance in bringing down Hart. The book is not a nuts and bolts exploration of the trench warfare of the election in the tradition of Witcover and Germond, but rather a serious of snapshots of important moments in the campaign, well detailed and critically examined. As such it is not the best source for a detailed examination of the whole campaign but more a superb companion piece for such books. It also is an excellent summery for those who want a more general overview of the campaign. Highly recommended.

Thoroughly Researched and Well-Reasoned

Herbert Gutman's "The Black Family in Slavery and Freedom" is a thoroughly researched and well-written examination of how black families resiliently responded to enslavement. He forcefully and carefully supports his thesis that slaves were not only victims, but also victors.

Researchers typically only asked, "What did slavery do to the slave?" They also first needed to know, "Who was the slave?" How owners treated their slaves affected how individual slaves behaved. But how slaves behaved depended upon far more than their "treatment." Slave naming practices and marital rules are "unmistakable evidence of the importance of interior slave beliefs and experiences in shaping their behavior" (p. 259).

Historian Edmund S. Morgan summarized it well: "Human nature has an unpredictable resiliency, and slaves did manage to live a life of their own within the limits prescribed for them. Those limits were close but not so close as to preclude entirely the possibility of a private life."

Gutman thus exposes the lie that Black family life did not and could not exist due to slavery and its aftermaths. As a result, he encourages African Americans to take rightful pride in their heritage of family resiliency.

Responding to white liberal discourse on black families

Herbert Gutman's book, "The Black Family in Slavery and Freedom," is an important work that must be studied within its historical and ideological context.
Today it is commonly accepted that the relative absence of black males from involvement with family structures is historically attributable to shifts in post Civil War and post WWII migration of males for employment purposes, as well as the historically relative and racist lack of employment for black males in this country--but this was not always the prevailing wisdom.
About 9 years before Gutman's publication, D.P. Moynihan (later a U.S. Sentator from New York) had caused a stir by advocating public policy based on the common idea that American slavery and subsequent neo-slavery policies had destroyed the American "Negro" family. By "destroyed" these historians and policymakers meant that black fathers were historically absent, creating a matrifocal lineage system that was incapable of properly raising children and transmitting cultural values.
Apart from the obvious sexism inherent in that stance, several researchers, including Gutman, attempted to find out if there were viable family structures during the antebellum period in selected black communities---first in Buffalo, and then in plantation communities in Louisiana, Virginia, and South Carolina (among others).
Gutman found that long slave marriages (including between two persons and otherwise when necessary) did exist over a wide period of time and across different geographic locations. Despite the obvious pressures of slaveowners and white cultures, slaves were able to adapt and maintain families kin networks. While disruptions often occurred through sale, death, or forced displacement, these disruptions caused slaves and their communities to adapt and form larger shared kin networks of fellowship and communication based on patterns devised wholly by blacks themselves.
For example, in the face of endogamous practices by plantation owners, slaves practiced wide forms of exogamy that maintained and reinforced stable kinship networks. Children were often the result of prenuptial intercourse, but these parents consistently married each other afterwards. Far from being licentious or indiscriminate mating, these couplings were part of a consistent pattern of social practices. Children were named for blood relatives, further preserving cultural memories---even inscribing the lives of other family members on the narrative of slave children's bodies. through naming.
Rather than destroying families---forced migrations and relocations of slaves spread kinship networks wider and spread a "common slave culture" over the entire South.
Much of Gutman's evidence is convincing-especially early on in his volume-the birth records he relies on and kinship diagrams provide a wealth of information that supports his basic thesis very well. His study, although wide ranging, is easy to read because it is very structured, almost dry, in its presentation.
Gutman runs into difficulty when he attempts to extend his study beyond the antebellum period (ch. 9 and 10) because his documentation is severely lacking in this regard. Moreover, Gutman has a tendency to reproduce a certain amount of patriarchy inherent in the archival sources he consults. It is easy to get the impression that even though Gutman defends black women from charges of indiscriminate mating, he does not thoroughly interrogate his sources for the obvious biases they contain against black women. Some of his thought experiments with the data even seem unnecessary and overdetermined. But his basic thesis is sound, and he has the data to support it.

Great book

Purchased the book to supplement my genealogy research, which can be challenging since my ancestors were once considered property. This book contained large swaths of my maternal ancestry perfectly presented directly from Lewis Stirling's slave registry. It also provides an analysis of the familial society that existed under such a horrific existence. This book provided information and a perspective that I could not have found anywhere else.
