Kennan's second book of memoirs 1950-1963

Few individuals have ever had such an influence on world politics , as did George Kennan , At age 45, 1950, he was the architect of the Cold War strategy of the West . So if you have not read Memoirs 1925-1950, don't read the second , for it serves as memoir, onwards from his stepping down from his critical role in his office adjacent to several secretaries of state ,
But iI you are into George, then I would would strongly reccommend 1950-1963 for it's filled with gems about US history of that time , the debacle in Korea, McCarthyism in the eyes of the #1 Soviet expert,, how China was lost , to name but a few. .. I have lived in Russia for 19 years now , and have been enlightened by the man who best understood the Soviets.. I now often think "What would Kennan say? " when dealing with a problem in Russia ; for sadly , the fundamentals have not changed much here .

George F. Kennan's later memoirs, a bit more briefly.

Having just finished this book, I came to Amazon to both look for his 1925-1950 memoirs, and to see if I could glean anything from reviews of the later volume.
Just as brevity is said to be the soul of wit, a succinct review may often serve to advise the curious as to a volume of possible interest more efficiently than an interminable panegyric, so a few points, seriatim:
Kennan wrote well; it is a pleasure to read his text, as he was capable of shading his expression to convey situations and concepts with great precision.
Kennan had a comprehensive grasp of the political interplay between the U.S. and the countries he was concerned with. This is especially apparent in his discussion of Soviet policy metamorphosis between 1945 and the start of the Korean war. (the book is worth buying for this knowledge alone).
Mr. Kennan is prone to slight bit of narcissism, whining and somewhat repellent intellectual snobbery, but it is limited and does not seriously detract from a pleasurable book that you will not regret either purchasing or reading.

Wonderful writings of a great man.

Kennan, in my opinion, was one of the greatest men America has produced. His profound wisdom is evident to anyone who has read his writings. As is his mastery of the English prose. These memoirs, along with the first volume, present wonderful insights into his mind and thinking at various stages of his life. They make a fascinating reading indeed.
