Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future, by Friedrich Nietzsche

Nietzsche is the most inspiring of all modern philosophers excepting Ayn Rand, who used a very different approach for exposing her philosophy (The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged). Beyond Good and Evil is often touted as Nietzsche's greatest work, but I like Geneology of Morals ( On the Genealogy of Morals and Ecce Homo) at least as much, since I think it asks some questions that are at least as interesting as these, especially "Meaning of the Aesthetic Ideal". Some people imagine that philosophers are boring, and of course this book, like all important books, does take some work, but I often find myself laughing out loud when reading Nietzsche, since he has a really funny and often unexpected turn of phrase. The important concepts in this book include the difference between slave morality and master morality. Nietzsche tries to help the reader understand that there are no absolutes and that everything can be understood differently from a different point of view. He sees the greatest danger as the mindless, instinctive herd, and warns strongly against it, including especially the flawed and oxymoronic concept of the "common good". Since the rise of the Jacobins, more people have been murdered, starved to death or enslaved for the "common good" than for any other excuse.

The Kaufmann translation is better
By A Customer
While Beyond Good and Evil is probably the quintessial Nitzschean piece, I would have to say Zimmern's translation lags behind Kaufmann's. Although her use of quaint Elizabethan English is charming, and her edition has a beautifully personal touch to it (Zimmern was Nietzsche's dinner companion and erstwhile friend), the mistakes in her translation, while subtle, detract from it, especially when precision of language is so important for reading this book. Go with Kaufmann.

A Profound Book
By Samuel T. Goldberg
By Samuel T Goldberg, MD, psychiatrist/psychoanalyst Columbia Maryland sglmn61@aol.com

In the early chapters of Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche in effect wipes the slate clean, showing how previous philosophers and moralities were in their grasp inadequate. There is a "definite fundamental sch...eme of possible philosophies"(Aphorism 20), as there is of possible moralities (260), and particular philosphers and moralists merely fill in their respective places on these spectrums. Nietzsche offers a comprehensive critique of all such systems. The philosophers are unable to perceive even what in themselves wishes for truth, and they do not see that truth and virtue may in fact derive from deceptiveness and wickedness, which may be necessary functions for life itself. (Aph. 2-4) The will to truth may be merely a refinement of the will to ignorance. (24) Certain falsehoods may be nourishing and necessary physiologically. Deceptive appearance is necessary for life itself. (34) In a voice of irony, he acknowledges that we might need mathematical science, despite its falsehood. Philosophers and scientists wish to impose their morality, their ideal, their concepts on nature out of their pride, wishing to appropriate nature. Less the truthfulness of their concepts than this underlying will to power motivates the self-deceptively put "will to truth".

It is but an old moral prejudice that truth is worth more than appearance, or even that there is in reality any opposition between "truth" and "falsehood" at all. They may be merely shades of the same thing, "degrees of appearance".(34) The very existence of "stuff" or matter that underlies the "real world" is highly doubtful. Likewise, even the basic assumptions of a unitary "self" that thinks, of an "I", is also but an old falsifying superstition to which we cling for comfort and vanity. Again, " free will" being an illusion shows the importance of intentionality to be illusory. "The decisive value of an intention lies precisely in what is unintentional in it." (32) In this, he anticipates psychoanalysis.

Thinking about and questioning morality is itself immoral. (228) We have, after all, pluripotential access within to every barbarism(223). Morals, we've discovered, are a mere phenomenon of nature, not absolute nor above nature; there are no universal goods or values (194).Our modern "scientific", historic, scholarly observations and evaluations of all moralities and cultures, then, puts us in the position at best of being parodists of all moralities, undermining every one.(223) Our "transcendent" position is empty. Thus, our intrinsic, physiological aggression (will to power), manifested as "scientific skepticism", has relentlessly critiqued all that we loved or worshipped, utterly destroying each in turn. Having diagnosed our new condition, that we have assassinated not only the "old soul concept", ie, the "subject", showing that it is a questionable mere appearance as much as the "object", Nietzsche then sketches out the grim consequences . We have sacrificed ourselves, reality, finally even God himself, leaving us with only the Nothing to worship, "the final cruelty."(55) Recognizing that there is no objective foundation for morality in the world, that there is no universal moral law (186) , that the inner essence of nature and man is no more than raw will to power, instills profound pessimism. The truth that there is no truth may be deadly, as Leo Strauss put it. It is better that only few people realize that there is no truth; the general propogation of this insight could be calamitous; Thus, it is good that the study of morality is boring. (228) Can there nevertheless somehow be life-affirmation from this insight? Finding or asserting this seems a principle goal of Nietche's.

The strength of drives per se, of the will to power, which includes the capacity to sublimate, train and cultivate that raw will to higher forms of "spirituality", may be a way out. But, without any absolute nor objective standard from any source other than the one who wills, the ultimate value of what is willed can derive only from the source of will itself; it is self-posited. The one who wills most strongly creates values, creates the orientation of better and worse, and need not refer nor resort to any standard independently of his own nobility. Nietszche seems to celebrate this, but he recognizes the dangers, describing even proto-Nazism (208). The "philosopher of the future" , with these insights in hand, creates truth and value, rules and legislates, becoming himself the telos of mankind .(211) Man is both creature and Creator(225), in the image of God most literally; man created God in his own image. The"philosopher of the future" extends the sphere of his responsibility to include the all; he might undertake "audacious and painful experiments" that "the softhearted and the effeminate tastes of democracy could not approve... They will be harder (and perhaps not always only against themselves) than humane people might wish." (210) He raises the question: Is cruelty itself a good, merely a necessity, or merely to be recognized as a primary reality of nature, or of life?

Men and values are not equal, and according to the self-posited valuation of the great men, since they are themselves the Whither and Wherefore of mankind, what is right for one is hardly fair for all. Exploitation of others might be necessary; As opposed to Kant's moral imperative, by which each human consciousness must be only regarded always as an end in itself, never a means, this new morality, truer to the nature of things, unhinged from any absolute, has all lower men as only means to the ends of the men with the strongest wills. We can see how this is a "dangerous" book, which, if misinterpreted or misrepresented, as in fact it was for political ends by some Germans in the 1930's, might be used to pervert Nietcszche, making him seem to promote the worst outrages, when in fact he was merely the sad herald.

A better look at this...
By A Customer
Nietzsche never advocated any sort of morality as "good morality", nor did he encourage the creation of a "best possible society" by use of a certain morality. Nor is that what this book is about. (Nor did he propose the creation of a new moral standard: his good/evil versus good/bad antithesis is an analysis; Nietzsche was a philosopher, not an ideologue, moralist, or politician). Moreover, he did not find moral complacency to be the greatest fault of his time: rather, the mental complacency and lack of intellectual integrity displayed by many academics and "philosophers." Nietzsche here tries to analyze a range of issues and exposes in the most surprising ways numerous relationships, psychological insights, and types of morality, personality, and so forth. The aphoristic style is not a reflection of discontinuity: it is an embodiment of Nietzsche's ideal of constant questioning. These are thought experiments which develop ideas in unexpected ways, ideas which are retraced through the entire work. It has structure and continuity for those who know how to find it. The book has some faults and a few remarks which strike the reader as unnecessary drivel: but what great work doesn't? Whether we agree with it or not, like it or dislike it, until we are great critics or philosophers, we have no excuse for giving less than 5 stars to one of the greatest books of all time.

From Publishers Weekly
Fulghum's second book seems destined to follow All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten as a bestseller. Quoting a man rescued from a burning bed, the title is a clue to the merriment in some of the essays collected here, inviting readers to laugh as they empathize with those who put themselves in absurd situations. These stories remind us that there is a clownish facet in everyone's character, one of the traits that makes us human. In other entries, the author describes the joys of climbing trees and of overcoming the hassles that threaten a great Christmas pageant. The selections beguile and educate, whatever the subject, but most moving is Fulghum's short biography of John Pierpont, who died at age 81, and failed at everything despite promising beginnings. Though overlooked, notes the author, the record shows he accomplished much, not the least of which was writing "Jingle Bells." BOMC featured Selection; QPBC alternate; author tour.

I've stretched out on a few burning beds in my time too...
By Michelle (Michy) Devon
If you've read my other reviews, you know I am a HUGE Robert Fulghum fan. He is my mentor - the reason I began writing my first book that got its first contract. This book is almost funnier and better than the one before, if that's even possible, but only almost. This book inspired me and made me think, made me cry, and made me laugh. You can't ask for a better read than that!

The title piece of the book talks about a man who was interviewed by the news for a house fire. The question posed to the man was how the fire, which was in the bedroom, from the mattress, had started. The man had answered that he didn't know how the fire had started, since the bed was in fire when he lay down on it. Mr. Fulghum talks about how we do that, sometimes: lay down on burning beds. This is, of course, a metaphor for us making poor decisions, decisions not in our best interests, when we know this is the case when we're making them.

And that is the best example of what Mr. Fulghum's writing in all his essays and books I've read have been, including this book. It Was on Fire When I lay Down on It is a series of poignant memoir-style essays, each with their own metaphorical 'lesson' or moral to them... some are touching and moving while others are giggle and snort funny, but all of them speak to a bigger picture or a deeper meaning if you're willing to look beyond the implied. Well worth the read.

I agree with some about his attitude about dogs. I am a dog lover. My Jake is my son, my furry fur-legged brat dog and I love him dearly, but I can't see discrediting an entire man and his entire library or work and contributions to literature, reading, faith and humor just because his opinions differ from mine on one point. The stories he tells are not graphic in nature about his dislike of dogs, so I take those with a grain of salt and move on to the other more poignant things with which I can relate. I will never agree 100% with anyone on everything, and this is simply a point of division in mind between me and Mr. Fulghum. To stop reading him for his personal opinions when he is doing no physical damage (it's just opinion), is something I'm not wont to do.

Laughing Out Loud
By Dkitty
I started reading this book on an airplane...and in some ways I wish I hadn't. I was laughing and laughing at the sheer unexpectedness of this book, shaking the entire row with my convulsions. I think some were trying to figure out if I were laughing or crying, as I had tears running down my cheeks. The stories were a total surprise to me, for I didn't buy this book for the humor. I actually bought it because a friend had told me one extremely meaningful story out of the book, regarding the meaning of life. In essence, this story-ette is about a priest and his meaning of life, and a small mirror...he believes the meaning of life is to bring light to dark places, a game he used to play when he was a kid with sunlight and a mirror. That game has become a metaphor for his life. So I bought the book for that reason, for a few little pages. But now 1/2 way through the book, it has entertained me way more than expected.

The book is written in article form, with each story-ette lasting 3 to 7 pages, so it makes for excellent bedtime reading. FYI, this book and the writing remind me of Bill Bryson, and his writing style.

More collected essays
By David Graham
This book is simliar to ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED IN KINDERGARTEN in consisting of several dozen short, easily readable, reflective essays. I liked his first book a little better - I thought the overall quality a little higher. There are, however, many fine pieces in this collection (including one commenting on the theme of his first book that is brutally honest). The mood is a bit darker in this second volume, but that is not meant as a perjorative description, it merely means that Fulghum shows a different side to his ponderings. If you liked his first book, you will like this one. If you didn't, then you won't like this one either.

Dark, nihilistic, and foreboding
By Robert Wynkoop
Whereas I probably read Sholokhovs And Quiet Flows the Don three or four times, I have read The Don flows Home to The Sea only once. It is a dark, nihilistic and foreboding novel. Picking up where volume one leads off, it follows the Russian Civil War to its conclusion in orgy of violence, death and destruction. I can see why other reviewers see this novel has having no redeemable qualities- it is a story of death, betrayal and heartache.
Yet, I give it a Five-Star rating. It is still a great novel. Once again we follow the Prokoffievich family as it tries to survive in the chaos of war. I was particularly intrigued how our protagonist, Gregor, changes sides from the Whites to the Reds and back. Clearly, Gegor was not driven by ideological considerations, but by survival, and yes, perhaps even his own self interest.
I could not believe it when Aksinia is shot while trying to escape a roadblock on horseback. Just as the book is coming to its conclusion, just when you think that our Gregor and Aksina may finally escape the carnage of civil war, death comes.
By the way, from a historical perspective, this is probably the last war in which horses and cavalry were extensively used. Think about it as late as 1920's, men were fighting on horseback. Wow! Yes, it is worth the read, but you may only read it once. It is a terrifying novel.

Russian fiction
By Don Adams
This was the novel that first introduced me to Russian fiction. I first borrowed and read it from friends of my family in the late 1950s. The author later won the 1965 Nobel Prize for Literature for this novel and the first part of it, "And Quiet Flows the Don". It is a very involved story of a Cossack family in the Don river area of Russia, prior to the 1917 revolution. Members of the family are involoved not only in WWI, but the sons are on different sides after the revolution (Red Army vs. White Army). I found myself getting very involved with the different family members. All of them with strong/weak points. The novel gives the reader a very good insight into the Cossack culture of the early 20th Century.

Good, sometimes ranty
By Zach
Good book coming from the second wave of feminism, although sometimes it feels like a rant. Still, the history of Mary is very well researched.
Published in 1976 by Marina Warner, Alone of All Her Sex: The Myth and the Cult of the Virgin Mary is both a lasting work of scholarship and an artifact of its own time—second wave feminism. As such, it focuses less on the legal restrictions that have been put on women through the centuries than it does on the influence that culture has upon our view of women. The subject of Warner’s book holds deeply personal relevance to her own experience, so at times the book might seem almost like a personal rant. However, it is an experience shared by many women—especially those who grow up Catholic—and the scholarship that Warner puts into the writing of her book should not be understated. It is a rare feat for an author to write about such a personal subject with research of such depth, and Warner does just that. Alone of All Her Sex stays admirably focused on its topic throughout, not veering too much into other feminist agendas.
Warner’s book is structured in five major parts. Each part is about a certain identity that Mary represents: Mary as the Virgin, Queen, Bride, Mother, and Intercessor. Warner tells us, “I have not undertaken a history of the cult of the Virgin as such, but in chronological order I have taken aspects of her composite personality at their zenith and then worked backwards and forwards in time showing the ideas that contributed to their genesis and growth and lingered on in the tiredness of old age” (xxiii). This structure helps to emphasize Warner’s thesis that the Virgin Mary is the impossible achievement of a woman, a Christian myth whose standards place unnatural and unhealthy pressures upon the women who seek to emulate her and love her so. With this central guiding thesis, Warner’s book is less a chronological walkthrough narrative of the Virgin than it is a series of essays focusing on the various identities of Mary and pointing back to her main argument.
While certainly a work of feminist scholarship, the book does not make a strong case that the female gender is the only gender that experiences the pressures of unachievable ideals—and, to Warner’s credit, she does not try too hard to argue this. Instead, she focuses on her topic without excessive judgment of “the Patriarchy.” Writing with a clear agenda, the book stays on its own track with laudable honesty, allowing its reader to judge for herself. Like C. L. R. James in The Black Jacobins, Warner is upfront about her agenda, but nonetheless backs her writing with a wide variety of sources. Alone of All Her Sex may be called a history book only loosely. It certainly does not follow the Marxist methodology of history writing, but its adherence to old school history writing is, at best, loose. It is a study of the cult of the Virgin Mary throughout the ages, and, as such, is a study on cultural and religious history—it mentions on events only insofar as these events support her thesis on the cultural history of the Virgin Mary.
Warner backs her statements with a wide array of sources, proving the painstaking work and scholarship that went into the writing of her book. Because she is writing about the history and evolution of the cult of the Virgin Mary, she relies less on primary sources in the traditional sense and ancient history writing, instead preferring to quoting from traditional poetry, liturgy, songs, and other artwork, including paintings and mosaics. Warner also cites modern scholarship, thus cementing her role in the dialogue between the scholars of her generation. All this is not to say that Warner does not have a strong base in the historical progression of events surrounding the cult of the Virgin Mary. Warner often references events from the rich history of the Catholic Church; she simply does not make these events the centerpiece of her book.
Written in the second half of the twentieth century, Marina Warner’s Alone of All Her Sex cannot be considered a classic, but it is certainly a book anyone who wants to learn about the Virgin Mary or feminism in the context of religion must read. A uniquely written work, Warner’s book contains the personal elements, the objective historical sources, and the cultural analysis that modern non-Marxist interpretations of history are beginning to adapt and reconcile. A telling sample of second wave feminist literature, Alone of All Her Sex is a gift to the world written from its author’s heart.

Brilliant research and interpretation
By Elizabeth G. Melillo
Marina Warner's writing style is so magnificent that each paragraph seems a tribute to the beauty of the English language. I should like to use this book as an instruction manual for advanced courses in literary composition.

In itself, this book is a landmark work of European history. Marina's treatment of nearly a millennium of devotions, historical implications, poetry, art, and culture is exceedingly extensive and cohesive.

I withheld the fifth star because the underlying thesis, that the devotions to Mary have condemned women to inferior status, distorts the essence of the devotions chronicled. Even in the 'age of faith,' the connections between devotion, which admits to God's ways being unknowable, and the physical manifestations (icons, relics and the like) which make them come alive for the believer, hardly would have been veritable manuals of 'how to use Mary's holiness to underline female inferiority.' In fact, were this book a historical work without the feminist angle, it would have been far better.

Remarkable events told by a remarkable author
By Jay Paul
I'm not a historian. I just like to read history and historical fiction. I first discovered William Prescott's Conquest of Peru in the back of a used bookstore. My kids are from Peru so I decided I should check it out. The first section was about the Inca civilization; their society, customs, politics, and more. It was certainly interesting and readable, but a bit dry. Once the narrative turned to Pizzaro and his band of adventurers, however, I was hooked. They don't call Prescott a romantic historian for nothing. He blends detailed accounts of absolutely outrageous courage, hardship, audacity, greed, ignorance, politics, faith, slaughter, naiveté, and more with vivid insights into the lives, characters and motives of the people involved. The story reads like excellent historical fiction, and yet it's meticulously researched fact.
Prescott's Conquest of Mexico is every bit as good as Conquest of Peru. The book starts with a section on the Aztec civilization, then turns to Cortez and his men. These adventurers behaved as though they were invincible, they believed their faith in God made them so, and one almost comes to believe that they were as they beat unimaginable odds over and over and over again. I was on the edge of my seat through all three volumes.
No offense to Lewis & Clark (or Stephen Ambrose), but Prescott's Conquest of Mexico and Conquest of Peru make Undaunted Courage sound like a family picnic. Remarkable events told by a remarkable author. It's no wonder these books are still popular more than one and a half centuries after they were written.

After all these years, as good as its modern rival
By Peter Gulutzan
I concern myself only with the first part only (the Conquest of Mexico), and compare it to its twentieth-century equivalent, Hugh Thomas's THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO. The obvious difference is in language, since Prescott's long clausulae and cadences are, to us moderns, harder to read. (There is an "updated for modern readers" version of Prescott available elsewhere on amazon, which I have not seen.) One might have expected Thomas would have the advantage of modern research, but the sad fact is that we know litle more now than we did 150 years ago -- both Prescott and Thomas had to use the same source material.
Specifically looking at the famous event of July 1 1520, the "Noche Triste", I see that Prescott and Thomas differ (in the following I will put Thomas inside parentheses). Prescott says the Spaniards chose to retreat on the Tlacopan causeway which was different from the one they came on (Thomas calls it the Tacuba causeway and says that it's the one they came in on); Prescott says Cacama the Lord of Texcoco came along (Thomas says Cacama was killed a month earlier); Prescott says Tlaxcalans were distributed throughout the column (Thomas says they were in the centre); Prescott says "several Indian sentinels" saw the Spaniards leaving (Thomas says it was one woman fetching water); and finally Prescott says that Pedro de Alvarado pole-vaulted over a break on the causeway (Thomas says that can't be true). Also Prescott's passage on the Noche Triste is longer than Thomas's, not just because he's more verbose (which he is), but because he includes details that Thomas omits. Now, for the question "which account is true?" I am unqualified to judge two such thorough scholars, but I know that Prescott is right about Cacama, more believable about the sentinels, and less believable about Alvarado's Leap, so I'd call it a tie in that respect. And so, which account was simply more interesting? Prescott.

A solidly researched history of the Spanish conquest
By JLind555
William Prescott's "History of the Conquest of Mexico" and "History of the Conquest of Peru" are brought together in one volume that provides a solidly researched and detailed account of the Spanish conquest of the Americas. The first volume, describing the Mexican conquest, is the better of the two. In the first chapters, Prescott describes the life and culture of the native Mexican tribes, concentrating on the dominant Aztecs, their religion, customs, achievements in literature, astronomy, agriculture and mechanical arts, and discusses the infighting among the various native princes that set them up for a fall when the Spanish conquistadores landed in the New World. Prescott writes about the efforts of Bartolomé de las Casas to protect the natives from slavery and how this was rejected on the specious grounds that the Indians had to be brought into contact with the Spaniards in order to be converted to Christianity and slavery was the only way to achieve this end. Prescott describes the conquest of the Caribbean islands of Cuba, Santo Domingo and San Juan de Puerto Rico (as it was then known) as a precursor of the conquest of the Mexican mainland, and how some Indians like Montezuma thought the Spaniards were there for their benefit, whereas others, like Xicotencatl, the Tlascalan chief, were suspicious of the Spaniards' motives from the beginning and tried to unite the native tribes against them. The Noche Triste, brought on by the arrogance and cruelty of the Spanish captain Pedro de Alvarado, is described in such detail that the reader is totally caught up in the narrative. One finishes this volume filled with admiration at Prescott as an historian and a writer, and regretting what a great civilization was destroyed out of pure greed and lust for gold.
"The History of the Conquest of Peru" is as well-written and detailed as the first volume, but it seemed a little drier to this reader, possibly because I was already familiar with the history and culture of the Incas from reading the "Comentarios Reales" of the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, the son of a Spanish father and an Incan princess. Prescott gives several pages to Garcilaso's talents as a historian, which he doesn't think much of; he notes that Garcilaso, writing as a spokesman for his defeated countrymen, painted a picture of Incan civilization that bordered on the panegyric. But Prescott quotes from Garcilaso here and there throughout his own book. Prescott presents the history of the Pizarro brothers' march through Peru, the defeat of the Incas and the death of Atahualpa, all in scrupulously researched detail. The Pizarros comes across as much less sympathetic figures than Cortes; while Cortes was able to appreciate the humanity of the native Mexicans, and tried to rein in some of his more rapacious captains, Alvarado among them, the Pizarro brothers and their captains, notably Carbajal and Almagro, seemed to be trying to outdo each other in cruelty. We end up feeling nothing but disgust for the avarice and ambition of these people, and the devastating effect it had on the native civilizations that were unfortunate enough to be in their way.
Prescott wrote his history over two hundred years ago and it's still the gold standard of early Latin American historiography. Taken as a whole, the volumes present a panoramic view of the clash of cultures that continues to reverberate to this day throughout Central and South America. Prescott is a vivid narrator and an excellent storyteller; his account grabs the reader early and sweeps you along from the first page to the last. It's a terrific read and a grand tour through two lost civilizations.

Interaction Ritual - Essays on Face-to-Face Behavior, by Erving Goffman

In a brilliant series of books about social behavior, including The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, Asylums, and Stigma, Erving Goffman has exposed all that is at stake when people meet face to face. Goffman’s work, once of the great intellectual achievements of our time, is an endlessly fascinating commentary on how we enact ourselves by our responses to and our readings of other people.

From the exemplary opening essay of Interaction Ritual, “On Face-Work,” —a full account of the extraordinary repertoire of maneuvers we employ in social encounters in order to “save face”—to the final, and classic, essay “Where the Action Is,”—an examination of people in risky occupations and situations: gamblers, criminals, coal miners, stock speculators—Goffman astounds us with the unexpected richness and complexity of brief encounters between people. For Goffman, as for Freud, the extreme cases are of interest because of the light they shed on the normal: The study of the trapeze artist is worthwhile because each of us is on the wire from time to time.

Classic Text
By S. Pactor
People call Goffman a sociologist, but the more I read of him, the more I see him as a philosopher. I mean, George Herbert Mead is considered a philosopher and not a sociologist, right? In my day-to-day life, I find Goffman's observations about ritual human behavior and face-to-face interaction to be endlessly useful. Almost every day I think about something he's written in one of his books. His style is not overly pedantic, and you can read through any of his books without specialized education.

Sure, the 50s/60s examples he gives are sort of dated, but so what- we all watch Mad Men, don't we?

Essential reading.

Supremely helpful not only in its insight into social reality, but in its terms and models for studying literature, drama, film, even video games.

Goffman's Classic Theory
By J. Smallridge
This is not as profound as some of his other works, but it is important nonetheless. Goffman's understanding about interactions and how society shapes them, and learns from them, is as applicable in 2011 as it was 50 years ago.

The House of Barrymore, by Margot Peters

This epic family biography begins in the 1860s with Louisa Drew, the greatest comedienne of her time, mother of the brilliant Georgiana Drew Barrymore and mother-in-law of the vaudeville star and matinee idol Maurice Barrymore. But it is the children of Georgie and Maurice who are the heart of the book: Ethel, Lionel, and John, the most extraordinary members of an extraordinary family. We see Ethel's sensational social and stage debuts in London and on Broadway; her struggle with alcohol, debt, and damaged reputation; and her spectacular comeback in The Corn is Green. We see John's vault to fame in Shakespearean stage roles and his triumphant move to the screen before succumbing to the ''Barrymore curse'' of addiction to alcohol. And we see the steadier Lionel pursuing his talents in painting and composing before finally capitulating to the family tradition. We see both the price and the privileges of their extraordinary fame; and finally, with the death of Ethel, the decline of America's first family of acting.

From Publishers Weekly
In this lengthy biography of the Barrymore dynasty, the spotlight, as in life, shines brightest on Lionel (1878-1954), Ethel (1879-1959) and John (1882-1942). Greatly gifted, the three stars of stage and film were also alcoholics, an addiction Ethel conquered when it threatened her performances. Although Lionel's weaknesses included morphine, he was able to maintain a distinguished career. It was the "baby," John, whose private and public pursuits were ruined by boozing and womanizing. He was hailed as the world's most memorable Hamlet, yet John's star fell steadily after his youthful triumphs, until he was driven to connive with his exploiters in his downfall. Loosely organized and sometimes hard to track, this frustrating volume by the author of Bernard Shaw and the Actresses nevertheless captures some of the Barrymore magic. Photos.

From Library Journal
Working from an impressive array of sources--Peters combed theatrical libraries and collections across the country and communicated with dozens of her subjects' associates and acquaintances--the author has created a definitive account of the lives and careers of John, Ethel, and Lionel Barrymore, "Broadway's Royal Family of Actors." Much more comprehensive than Ethel's Memoirs and Gene Fowler's Good Night Sweet Prince: The Life and Times of John Barrymore , both currently available only in reprint editions, this biography includes extensive notes for each of its 31 chapters as well as a selected bibliography. The author of excellent biographies of Charlotte Bronte ( Unquiet Soul , LJ 4/15/75) and Mrs. Patrick Campbell ( Mrs. Pat , LJ 2/1/84), Peters has made an outstanding contribution to the history of the American theater in her thoroughly readable account of three of its most illustrious artists.

The Perils of Joining the Family Business Laid Bare
By John H. Turner
Geniuses are often difficult to live with and often not particularly admirable. We have seen this so many times, we oughtn't to be surprised. In the performing arts, we are part of the problem in our role as the audience. Most of what the Barrymores did was well below their abilities, and much is lost thanks to the ephemeral nature of live theatre and the nature of the film used in the early days which turned to jelly and are lost. Hence, we don't have all the evidence we need. This fine book redresses some of this, but cannot touch the essence of their art. Louisa Lane Drew was one of the greatest talents our country ever produced, her accomplishments are legendary. Thus it is fitting that the author examines her too. I might have titled the book, Louisa Lane Drew and the Three Barrymores. As a chronicle of a great era in our culture, this is a magnificent work. If Lionel and John were actors in spite of themselves, their achievements are all the more remarkable. I fell under Ethel's spell thanks to a photo of her in Captain Jinks in a photo book of plays and players. It showed the most beautiful young woman I'd ever seen and she just jumped off the page at me. I can see that in my mind's eye over fifty years later. Though the merits of the script might be highly dubious, it's one of an artist's duties to take something lesser and transform it into something greater. We've an inside look here at how plays and movies got made and learn more about many of the most significant workers in them. The author deserves our highest praise.

Rich Portrait of the Great Barrymore Dynasty
By Susan K. O'brien
The story of the Barrymores is so fascinating, and this book so well-written, that I have read and re-read it and consider myself fortunate to own a copy. The family's rich history encompasses four generations; the most talented of them, John and Lionel and Ethel, sweep from stage to stage and cross-pollinate in many fabulous Hollywood films. Anyone who has been lucky enough to watch John's magnificent performance in "Dinner at Eight" knows the depth of his nuanced ability in that almost super-human portrayal, so agonizingly close to the bone. One only wishes one could have seen just one of these three on the stage.

Emphasized is Ethel Barrymore's physical beauty, even as she ages. Not for her the bloated lips, face lifts and hair jobs of today. She remained an American classic of physical loveliness to the day she died. What lessons there are for "starlets." Ethel could take any part and humanize it. Her personal life also was the stuff of great scripts. What an incredible experience it was to actually know her, Katharine Hepburn is quoted as saying in the book. This book is as close as most of us can get.

Yes, we must get through the black saga of John Barrymore's epic, abusive drinking episodes. He was a terrible parent and outside of his acting ability, not much to recommend him as a man. It raises the question, what should we expect from the ultra-talented among us? Should they also be public role models? It would have been far better if John Barrymore had not tried to father children, particularly his daughter.

Lionel towered in any film he was in. The "Dr. Kildare" series (in which he played Dr. Gillespie) is often criticized as little more than high-level soap opera. I do not agree, because any opportunity to see any Barrymore is transcendent. Watching Lionel build his character, piece by piece, is like watching a talented sculptor craft a lifelike work. This actor's range is incredible; he can play a mild-mannered little misfit ("Grand Hotel") to the meanest man in town ("It's a Wonderful Life") to the ethical grouch with the heart of gold in Kildare. The book allows the reader to journey through those films with all of the issues that surrounded Lionel, and the personal tragedies that took him down.

This is a rich resource on a number of levels, including the history of the theater in this country. The writing is excellent. It's all in the details of these larger-than-life careers of a premier American theatrical dynasty. And thank the heavens we had it.

House of Barrymore-Great Theatrical Biography
By Patrick J. Shea
Margot Peters--an English prof at the U of Wisconsin has written

several biogs--the Brontes, the Lunts & Mrs Pat Campbell, but her

1990 HOUSE OF BARRYMORE about the celebrated Ethel, Lionel & John

is by far her best.

HOUSE of BARRYMORE is one of the all-time great theatrical
