From Publishers Weekly
In his latest oral history, an appraisal of how the last 10 years have changed us, Pulitzer Prize-winner Terkel ( Working , etc.) uses the phrase "great divide" to symbolize the breaches which he claims are widening between young and old, rich and poor, among racial groups and within religious communities. He notes, too, a gap in our historical memory of even the immediate past, especially among the young, who tend to confuse celebrity with leadership. Eloquent, firsthand recitations from farmers who are losing their land, their solidarity, and their children to the city or by suicide, contrast starkly with that of an international Wall Street futures dealer, listed in the Forbes 400 register of richest Americans. Observations from a truck driver, a sports columnist, a laid-off steel worker, a striking flight attendant, a Ku Klux Klan member, a Gray Panthers activist and a couple serving time for anti-nuclear demonstrations comprise, along wth a host of others, this portrait of a nation's people riven by conflicting values. Major ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal
In the latest of Terkel's fine oral histories, ordinary people reflect on the issues of the 1980sReaganism, greed, farming, race relations, education, and religion. The law-and-order fundamentalist who participated in the sanctuary movement and the police chief's wife who was arrested during an anti-war demonstration help form this collage. The "divide" exists when inner beliefs conflict with public policy; when family members harbor differing views on heartfelt issues; when the ideas of the 1960s are compared with those of the 1980s. How did we get from there to here? Where are we heading? There are no answers here, just very timely and provocative commentary in Terkel's inimitable style. Sondra Brunhumer, Western Michigan Univ. Thoughts on the American Dream and the Struggle to Keep the Dream Alive
By Chicago Pete
Income inequality is all over the news outlets and political speeches. The thing is that the problem pre dates our current time. Great stories and anecdotes from the 1980's that bring home the timelessness of our sometimes unfair economic system.

The problems are obvious, can we find solutions?

From Publishers Weekly
The ideal New England home, as perceived in the late 19th century, was warm, welcoming and comfortable, a hive of hard work and frugality, a stable haven from the rapidly changing world outside. This conventional image had a solid basis in reality, maintains Nylander, who mines diaries, letters, wills, inventories, newspapers, advice books and travel accounts for this delightfully intimate portrayal of New England home life. Director of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, Nylander delineates a complex barter economy in which farm produce was a common medium of exchange and people swapped specialized work skills. Contrary to the popular image, however, she shows that change was a household constant, with the coming and going of friends, family, help and travelers. Enlivened by 162 period illustrations, her survey affords a rare glimpse of middle- and upper-class housework, clothing, kitchens, diet, socializing and much else. BOMC alternate.

From Library Journal
Soon after the American Revolution, New Englanders began to idealize their rural farms and homesteads as bastions of security in a rapidly changing world. Some reminiscences stretched back to the 17th century, drawing on memories, artifacts, and a sense of history. In particular, four remarkable women cited here kept extensive journals of daily life for more than a half-century. By the Civil War the preservation of the "snug fireside" had become literally a cottage industry. Museum curator Nylander uses this evidence to construct a series of excellent essays describing the customs, traditions, friends, families, and workloads of the "typical" New England household. Chapters on housework, seasons, clothing, food, and holidays document women's work at home. This fine social history of forgotten routines is recommended for most libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
A fact-filled, copiously illustrated, revealing survey of Yankee life and households in an earlier time, complied by Boston- based curator Nylander (Director/Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities). Drawing on an array of original documents and records-- especially on a handful of diaries written by New England women of the period--Nylander offers a substantive view of household life during a time that saw the nation established and its northern regions industrialized. The images the author presents are often those in which female activities or concerns predominate, although the male presence in the home is by no means given short shrift. The family ``unit'' in pre-Civil War America, Nylander explains, included nonnuclear members as well as boarders, hired help, and, frequently, young married couples preparing to create a household of their own--with daily routines consisting not only of meal preparation and house cleaning but also of spinning, sewing, and preparing for a variety of future events, from marriage to parties and other social gatherings. Changes in technology prompted immense shifts in these routines, with, for instance, iron stoves replacing the massive kitchen fireplaces and commercial weaving offering greater variety than the homemade product. But while the agricultural or village aspects of New England living generally dominate this account, the emphasis clearly is on more well-to-do families rather than their more numerous, poorer--and less literate--neighbors. Not comprehensive, then, and at times overly reliant on diary excerpts--but informative, and valuable for its many glimpses of American interiors. Images of the New England Home 1760 - 1860
By Vsandiford
This book is easy to read, the material is presented in a logical and straight-forward manner, chapter by chapter, covering all aspects of life from 1760 to 1860, including clothing, cooking, food, heating, family life -- everything you always wanted to know but didn't think to ask. I totally disagree with the previous reviewer [(A history student (MA)]. Author Nylander has certainly done her homework. The references cover a 100 year span and are from all types of sources -- the majority from first person accounts including diaries and letters, as well as books, newspapers, etc. There are various pictures (drawings) illustrating furnishings, equipment, placement of objects both within and outside the home. I have a MUCH better understanding of life during the mid-18th to the mid-19th centuries. The Author is an expert in colonial New England history and I thank her for sharing her expertise in this thoroughly enjoyable, readable, unstandable book.

A wonderful book portraying everyday life in New England.
By A Customer
This wonderfully written book uses diaries, letters, and a wealth of material culture evidence to portray everyday life in nineteenth-century New England. Nylander manages to bring the past alive for both the lay reader and the material culture student. A must for scholars of New England's past.

Important Contribution to the Field
By KS
This book is remarkable for its thorough coverage of all aspects of life between 1760-1860. I purchased this book for my own historical research, having read numerous books (both modern and antiquarian) related to the time period covered in Nylander's "Own Snug Fireside." I highly recommend her book for its accuracy, depth of subject matter, daily life details, and excellent photos/ drawings of the subjects being discussed. After reading her book, I not only became much more informed on the historical period, but I felt as if I'd gone on a journey back in time. The book is full of useful period engravings, photos, reproduced paintings in each chapter. The balance and thoroughness of each topic gives the book a seemless, authoritative feel. This book deserves the same attention and recognition of any of Larkin's books; it is an excellent achievement about a time period worthy of more modern scholarship. One of the other reviewers makes a very unfair charge, claiming that this book is based on only a couple of historical diaries; rather, this book's bibliography is eye-poppingly lengthy (literally hundreds of bibliographic entries) and the information Nylander writes about is spot-on accurate. As I have a particular interest in historical accuracy, and have read extensively on this time period, I can vouch that Nylander's information corroborates not only with other modern scholarly works but with antiquarian works printed between 1760-1860.

Jefferson Davis, American, by William J. Cooper

West Point graduate, secretary of war under President Pierce, U.S. senator from Mississippi-- how was it that this statesman and patriot came to be president of the Confederacy, leading the struggle to destroy the United States?

This is the question at the center of William Cooper's engrossing and authoritative biography of Jefferson Davis. Basing his account on the massive archival record left by Davis and his family and associates, Cooper delves not only into the events of Davis's public and personal life but also into the ideas that shaped and compelled him.

We see Davis as a devoted American, yet also as a wealthy plantation owner who believed slavery to be a moral and social good that could coexist with free labor in an undivided Union. We see how his initially reluctant support of secession ended in his absolute commitment to the Confederacy and his identification of it with the legacy of liberty handed down by the Founding Fathers. We see the chaos that attended the formation of the Confederate government while the Civil War was being fought, and the ever-present tension between the commitment to states' rights and the need for centralized authority. We see Davis's increasingly autocratic behavior, his involvement in military decision-making, and his desperation to save the Confederacy even at the expense of slavery. And we see Davis in defeat: imprisoned for two years, then, for the rest of his life, unrepentant about the South's attempt to break away, yet ultimately professing his faith in the restored Union.

This is the definitive life of one of the most complex and fascinating figures in our nation's history.

The title might seem odd, given that Jefferson Davis (1808-89) served as president of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and never once, in the 34 years between the end of the war and his death, expressed any remorse for his part in the conflict that tore America apart. Yet, as historian William J. Cooper Jr. reminds us in his sober, comprehensive biography, Davis "saw himself as a faithful American ... a true son of the American Revolution and the Founding Fathers." Indeed, Davis's own father had fought in the Revolution, and Davis himself was a West Point graduate and Mexican War veteran. He declared January 21, 1861, "the saddest day of my life," as he resigned his U.S. Senate seat to follow his native state of Mississippi out of the Union; yet he also unflinchingly defended secession as a constitutionally guaranteed right. Cooper's measured portrait neither glosses over Davis's lifelong belief that blacks were inferior nor vilifies him for it: "My goal," he writes, "is to understand Jefferson Davis as a man of his time, not condemn him for not being a man of my time." The chapters on the Civil War show Davis intimately involved in military decisions, as well as in diplomatic attempts to gain foreign support for the Confederacy. Cooper acknowledges the irony of his subject--who interpreted the Constitution as strictly limiting federal authority--being forced by the war's exigencies to create a powerful, centralized Confederate government. Yet, this depiction of a forceful, self-confident Davis makes it clear that he never could have been anything but "a vigorous and potent chief executive." The author also paints an attractive picture of a warm family man who was devoted to his strong-minded wife and their children. Neither hagiography nor hatchet job, this evenhanded work sees Jefferson Davis whole. --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly
Much has been written about Jefferson Davis, claims Cooper (The American South, etc.), professor of history at Louisiana State University, and most of it is negative. Instead of viewing Davis strictly through a modern lens, Cooper has set out to understand Davis as "a man of his time who had a significant impact on his time, and thus on history" and to "not condemn him for not being a man of my time." Davis was born in Kentucky in 1808 and attended Transylvania University in Lexington. In 1824, he left the South for West Point, graduated in 1828 with a commission as Brevet Second Lieutenant and went on to a noteworthy career as a hero of the Mexican War and an able statesman. Davis served as secretary of war under President Pierce and then as a U.S. senator from Mississippi. Indeed, Cooper notes, many thought Davis would be president one day. Always believing himself a firm supporter of the Constitution and a true patriot, Davis trusted in the sovereign rights of states ("he looked to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and John C. Calhoun as the great explicators of states' rights and strict construction, of the proper understanding of the nation and the Constitution"), which included the right to own slaves if a state so chose. Although Davis did not initially favor secession, he believed the Confederacy's goals to be consistent with the America he honored, and was proud to serve as the president of the Confederacy. Previous accounts of Davis's life have argued that he was basically an incompetent leader; some even have suggested that the failure of the Confederacy was, at the core, Davis's fault. But here Davis appears much like any other leader, possessing both strengths and weaknesses. In the already cluttered field of Civil War history, Cooper's is the definitive biography; readers will be particularly pleased to discover the compelling power of his narrative. (Nov.)

From Library Journal
Cooper, whose earlier books showed how Southerners reconciled liberty and slavery, casts Jefferson Davis as the "true patriot," who left the Union with sadness but also the conviction that the South stood as heir to the Founding Fathers because the antislavery North had violated the sacred promise of letting slaveholders take their "property" where they would without interference. Cooper's Davis entrusted considerable authority to individual slaves but never doubted the racial superiority of whites, and he worked for national expansion but insisted on Southern "rights." Throughout, says Cooper, Davis never doubted his own ability or purpose, whether at West Point, in the Mexican War, as Secretary of War, or as president of the Confederacy. Cooper (The American South: A History) finds Davis a more flexible and intelligent war leader than have most historians, but he also stresses his unbending belief in the constitutional rightness of secession. Cooper's great achievement is that he never loses the man to the age. Along with William Davis's more critical biography, Jefferson Davis: The Man and His Hour (LJ 11/15/91), Cooper's sympathetic reading of Jefferson Davis's life and work gives the man his due. If every Southern historian needs to "get right" with Davis to find out what made the Confederacy, readers can hardly do better than getting hold of Cooper's book to understand why so many men were willing to die for Dixie.DRandall M. Attention to detail is amazing. There are very few characters in history that are on the losing side who come out as heroes but he was. The sacrifices he made for his convictions were amazing. I think history treated Lee much kinder than Davis. Both were admirable men!

Interesting Look at Davis
By Rheumor
The book is well researched and well written, and the style is highly readable. Having said that, it's not an engrossing book that's hard to put down either. Nonetheless, I plodded through it over a month and I am glad I did. Jefferson Davis remains an enigma to most Americans; how could someone who had studied at West Point, served in our military, been a Senator and a Cabinet officer lead a rebellion against the very nation he professed to love for so long? The book reveals the answer and makes a convincing argument that Davis neither hated The United States of America nor loved the vile institution of slavery. In his view, and perhaps in the view of many if not most of his Southern contemporaries, the largest viable sovereign political entity was the State, not the Union. Put simply, Davis was a Mississippian, and as long as Mississippi chose to associate itself with the other states of the Union, so too would Davis. But he believed very deeply in the Jeffersonian principle of decentralized government, and Federal mandates were an affront to his interpretation of the Constitution. The book makes his case admirably and tells the story of that period from an interesting perspective. It will not disappoint the reader whose views may be different than those of Mr. Davis.

Fascinating
By A Customer
This wonderful book is a voluminous history of the occult, using the principle figures in the western occult tradition such as Crowley, Paracelsus and Pythagoras, among others. Wilson includes excellent background material and puts forth a compelling theory of why the occult is the science of the future, when people will one day realise their true power and importance in the world. Mr. Wilson is annoyed at the current world-view pushed by existentialists and scientists that humans are no more than insigninficant accidents in an indiffernt cosmos. He postulates an emerging human ability which he refers to as "Faculty X", a faculty of clarity, direction and purpose which goes beyond the ordinary senses and proposes how this may be the key to future human evolution. Much emphasis is placed on the will's role in human development throughout humanity's existence and its continued importance in the future, as well as the importance of contemporary humanity's researc! h into the subconscious mind. Wilson disregards the hyper-skepticism of modern science, and even delineates how the philosophy behind such a view is now outdated, and how the resulting world view has become narrow and cynical. Nevertheless, Wilson is very objective and gives a very critical analysis of all occult phenomena -- powers which are the key for humanity's future growth.

Engrossing
By Aaron P. Beck
The only book on historical magic that I have found more in-depth than this is the Golden Bough. And that is a actually a huge compliment to Colin Wilson. Wilson does a great job of descibing detailed historical accounts of almost all facets of the occult in a simple way that is both inviting and enlightening. He strips common cliches like vampirism and lycanthropy of their mythology and horror movie camp and puts the beasts were they belong: in actual human history, scientifically and psychologically defining them as monsters only in their relationship to society and the human condition. The most amazing thing about this book however is that, with all its history, it is more than a history of the occult. Wilson has a premise--a premise so well woven into the history he provides, so unassuming, that you barely notice it. But when you do notice it, you won't ever see the world the same again. I've read countless books on mythology, monsters, magic and the occult in order to (silly, I know) give myself an edge in life, open my mind to certain possibilities and see beyond the ordinary. Colin Wilson has undoubtedly shown me the most.

Interesting things you probably just took for granted
By A Customer
Aside from the fact that Daniel Boorstin writes with real grace, which makes this final volume in his trilogy about American life a pleasure to read, it is filled with a consideration of subjects that you most likely never thought about as being part of "American history"--at least as it's taught in school--yet these are the events and the people who made the world we actually LIVE in: the businessmen and idea people who created the mail-order catalogue, the department store, the oil industry, and even the divorce industry, which played a surprising commercial role in the American west. Boorstin tells about people whose names have become household words (like Sears & Roebuck, or Dunn & Bradstreet)and how their ideas helped build the country and the life we know today; he tells about the cattle drives and the range wars; about inventions, and business, and how the democratization of shopping in the big department stores was a quintessentially American development. Every chapter has its fascination for the reader--at least for THIS reader. Ideas or practices that I simply accepted as "the way things are" prove often to be unique American inventions, and knowing this helps us know more about who we are, and why we are seen as different from the rest of the world (even as they start to copy us in so many ways).

Acerbic Critic
By Mr. Eric W. Carlson
Many have described Boorstin's "The Americans" series as being right-wing. I do not concur. He writes about a period, in reality our age, as if it is still happening because it is. The third and final book in the series shows that he is unsure if the changes from the Civil War to the present day have not all been for the betterment of mankind. Although written three decades ago, I would say that this book is more relevant than ever. I think that everyone should read "The Americans" series. There is a bit more of Boorstin's curmugeony personality in this last book, but don't let that disuade you from enjoying a very complex perspective of America in the Twentieth Century and, very possibly, the Twenty-First Century.

My Daddy Was a Pistol and I'm a Son of a Gun, by Lewis Grizzard

With affection, longing and hilarity, bestselling author Lewis Grizzard looks back on life with his hard-drinking, wandering father. This is a compelling, often hilarious portrait of a loving man who faced failure but always remained an inspiration to his son. "A sad book, a funny book, a very human book."--The Courier-Times. From Library Journal
Grizzard's father died 16 years ago, and every day since then his son has thought about him. This affecting memoir by the noted Southern journalist is "about his life and his hard times, about how much I loved him," and how, even at 40, "I'm still crying for him." Every man is special to his son, but Grizzard Senior certainly qualifies as a "character." He was a decorated war hero who was later forced out of the Army, a teacher and coach who was an impressive influence on his students and players, a con man who could smooth-talk money from strangers, and a drunk. As a portrait of a complicated man this book is recommended, and also for the sometimes astute things it has to say about father-son relationships and male rites of passage in contemporary America. Charles Michaud, Turner Free Lib., Randolph, Mass.

From the Inside Flap
This is a very special memoir, an unabashed confession of first a boy's, then a man's love for his father. As Lewis says. "To love someone unconditionally-as I loved Daddy-is to remember nuances that made such an object of love unique and impossible to replace." He was a man of contradictions, of lusty appetites, of rare warmth. He was a charmer of men and women and a consummate con artist. A certified war hero and a shameless passer of bad checks.

Fans will love this funny and poignant memoir told as only Lewis Grizzard can.

How to handle the grief of losing your father.
By A Customer
With this work Grizzard departs from his usual mileu of homespun humor and examines the special relationship between fathers and sons. In doing so, the author takes the reader on a bittersweet trip through his father's life to include his military experiences during the Korean War, return to the United States as a combat hero, declining success in the business world, divorce, and finally his early death brought about by alcoholism. The story operates on two levels first by examining Grizzard's relationship with his father and, of greater importance to the reader, in unraveling the intricate interaction between all fathers and sons. On this second level, the work reveals that sons see their fathers as heros regardless of their circumstances. The author makes his best point in the early pages of the work in a discussion of, of all things, the various degrees of intoxication. First there are belligerent drunks, followed by rowdy drunks, followed by the "crank up the Enola Gay" drunks. In describing the most inebrieated level, Grizzard coins the phrase "crying about your daddy drunk", a point at which pent up emotions surge from that special place in the male psyche where men hide their most painful wounds. Any man who has lost a father can relate to this final level. I would recommend this work to two groups of readers--men who have suffered through the death of a father as well as those who wish to understand the depression and post traumatic shock of combat. Grizzard provides more insight to these readers than the best researched psychology book on the shelf. A powerful work with an eternal message, it is a shame that this work is no longer in print.

The Elizabethan World Picture: A Study of the Idea of Order in the Age of Shakespeare, Donne and Milton, by Eustace M. Tillyard

This brief and illuminating account of the ideas of world order prevalent in the Elizabethan age and later is an indispensable companion for readers of the great writers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries—Shakespeare and the Elizabethan dramatists, Donne and Milton, among many others. The basic medieval idea of an ordered Chain of Being is studied by Professor Tillyard in the process of its various transformations by the dynamic spirit of the Renaissance. Among his topics are: Angels; the Stars and Fortunes; the Analogy between Macrocosm and Microcosm; the Four Elements; the Four Humours; Sympathies; Correspondences; and the Cosmic Dance—ideas and symbols which inspirited the minds and imaginations not only of the Elizabethans but of all men of the Renaissance.

About the Author

E. M. W. Tillyard (1889-1962) was a fellow, and later became master at Jesus College, Cambridge University. He has best known for his argument that Elizabethan literature did not represent humanism, but instead a theological bond that allowed the medieval view of the world order to continue. Some of his works include Shakespeare’s Early Comedies, The Epic Strain in the English Novel, and The Miltonic Setting: Past and Present.

Ian Myles Slater on: A Standard Introduction
By Ian M. Slater
Shakespeare and his contemporaries not only wrote in a form of English which is no longer familiar (and may not mean the same thing when it looks familiar), and needs notes on words and grammar to be completely understandable. Like Dante, they lived in a mental world which is now remote and foreign. No matter how universal Shakespeare, or Ben Jonson, or Christopher Marlowe, may seem, it is easy to miss the points of their statements, take the commonplace for the original, the new for the ordinary, and generally impose our own thoughts on their words.

This was in fact the common practice in the eighteenth and nineteenth century (with some honorable exceptions), but some of the great scholars of the Victorian Age began to try to restore the intellectual context of an epoch that was no longer entirely medieval, but not really modern. Their approach gradually filtered down to students through articles and commentaries. Or, as in this case, an independent introduction to the subject.

For over half of the twentieth century, E.M.W. Tillyard's handy summary of "The Elizabethan World Picture" gave countless undergraduates, and many curious readers, a short introduction to an often unfamiliar world. A world in which your health rested on a proper balance of humours, which were not your reaction to jokes, but substances flowing through your body. A world in which the Four Elements (Earth, Air, Fire, and Water) were part of a hierarchy beginning with God, and including all the ranks of human beings. A world which was beginning to crumble, as the Eternal Truths of Christianity became contingent on political events, and which needed reassurance, even in popular entertainment.

Tillyard was an interesting critic (he had a famous debate on critical theory with C.S. Lewis, published as "The Personal Heresy"). His major works include a full study of Shakespeare's History Plays, in which he worked out in detail their relation to Elizabethan political theory. It is a little ironic that he may be best known for this short textbook, in which he did not set out to say anything particularly new or original. There are longer, more comprehensive, and far better documented books on the subjects he covers in "The Elizabethan World Picture," but it would be hard to find so convenient and focussed an entrance into this particular lost world of the imagination.

Fascinating in the extreme.
By Princess Artemis
I don't know enough about the Elizabethan time to know what this book may have left out, but I found it utterly fascinating.
People today seem so proud of their own scientific views and look down on older ones as so obviously out of date, but they fail to recognize that given what the people of the time had access to, their worldview was just as consistent with the then known facts as 'ours' is today.
Some day the prevalent worldview may become blatantly wrong according to new facts, and maybe some day people will read about it and be as fascinated by 'our'worldview as I am by the Elizabethan.
This book does a wonderful job of describing the fantastically interconnected parts that make up the Elizabethan worldview, and I find it something worth using to understand and read things written at the time and to remember as metaphor for today.

The first full-scale guide to the world of parallel plants - a vast, extremely peculiar and completely imaginary plant kingdom. Leoni presents all the fabulous lore and scholarship surrounding parallel plants, tells tales of the great parallel plant hunters, furnishes transcriptions of legends and folk tales relating to parallel plants, and provides elegant and scientifically-accurate drawings of each nonexistent plant species (remarkable because some of the species are invisible!) A unique, definitive and hilarious book.

A disquieting look at what creative science could achieve
By loce_the_wizard
Leo Lionni created a baffling, even maddening, encyclopedic compendium that describes, illustrates, arrays, and summarizes a host of imaginary plants---his parallel botany. Besides the detailed descriptions of these odd plants, Mr. Lionni, who is best known for his various children's books, rendered numerous illustrations of the various parallel plants. But he doesn't stop here: 23 figures and photographs of various scientists, researchers, explorers and parallel plants together paired with another 32 plates or charcoal or pencil drawings fortify the seeming reality of the world of parallel botany. (Keep in mind that a number of these plants are not visible.) The end notes to the chapters add more authenticity, and I assume, that many of the publications cited are real. The only component lacking is an index.
There are layers and layers of complexity to this spoof, for Mr. Lionni draws the reader into more than the facts and lore of his creations by also intertwining issues about philosophy, language, and the scientific method. He presents multiple points of view bantered by experts in this subject matter, and this debate enlivens the discussion. He firmly roots the research by drawing upon imaginary but real-sounding folk tales and legends, made more real by invoking actual historical figures. Hence, imaginary notes from Magellan's historian or the Greek philosopher Heraclitus are dissected and scrutinized for clues and encounters with various specimens from the realm of parallel plants. Such luminaries as the Swiss biologist Max Spinder or the Greek botanist Professor Spyros Rodokanankis, and many more, espouse their various theories and findings, often disagreeing about their findings and the implications of their research.
His methods remind one of both Borges and Lovecraft, two masters at creating real-sounding imaginary worlds supported by tier upon tier of crafted scholarship and science.
This book is unique and arguably the last, and the only, word on the subject of parallel botany. Some consider it hilarious, others a mere spoof, but certainly it is more than that, for Mr. Lionni expended considerable effort and time to document this imaginary segment of the plant kingdom. The fact that a major publisher issued the book in hardback suggests someone thought highly of this idea.
I take away a sense of astonishment at the amount of detail invoked to underscore the verisimilitude of the premise, and see this book as a wry jab at the reductionistic tendencies of a scientific method that seems at times to value cataloging over understanding our world.
(I also once had a vision many years ago that may have come from whatever source Mr. Lionni tapped for Parallel Botany, a vision of an asylum that housed crazed and dangerous plants that I rendered in an oil painting a friend of mine smuggled into the art gallery in the Saturn Bar down in New Orleans.)

The author of The Island of the White Cow recounts her discovery of and her growing attachment to the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, describing the area's history and culture.

From Publishers Weekly
"I have never really belonged to an American landscape," declares poet and essayist Tall ( The Island of the White Cow: Memories of an Irish Island ) at the outset of this well-observed meditation on the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, to which she moved in 1982. Shifting between personal observations and literary/historical reflections, she describes her attachment to a place both beguiling and benighted. "Geneva has many of the griefs of a city . . . but none of the advantages," she laments, but as she ruminates on the importance of a home, she finds comfort in the natural beauty around her. Though Tall is a fluent guide, her memoir suffers from a certain bloodlessness: her search for home seems mainly a mental construct, with a paucity of human characters. In the end, when she reports how her family, seeking a "more lively, responsive human community," has moved to the nearby college town of Ithaca, we sense what she has left out.

From Library Journal
Tall, a self-described rootless individual, settles along Seneca Lake, one of the Finger Lakes in New York State. From this locale, she writes of the geography and history of the region. She uses the setting to launch into a discussion of the importance of place to humankind and reflects on sacred ground and boundaries, among other topics. She artfully interweaves the unique geography and geology of the area, the history and mythology of the Native Americans who claimed the land as their place, with the history of white settlements and the growth and decline of the economy--evident especially in architecture--to assemble a literate account of the importance of place. Tall uses her well-honed skills as an observer and poet to bring the reader a thought-provoking, pleasurable memoir. A good choice for public libraries and those with regional interest.

From Kirkus Reviews
In The Island of the White Cow (1985), Tall recorded her five-year stay on an island off the coast of Ireland. Here, less successfully, she tells of her ten years in the Finger Lakes area of New York State. Tall came to the region as an academic, with no roots there and no reason for the move beyond the vagaries of employment. Her experience in Ireland gave her a sense of a community linked to the soil, to centuries-old traditions from before recorded history. But in Geneva, New York, she found herself a stranger in a land that had been stolen from its earliest inhabitants and then systematically mistreated by later residents. The author's attempt to re-create a sense of the territory takes her into its history as a breeding ground for religion (Joseph Smith laid the foundations of Mormonism here); the complicated jockeying among colonial governments for rights to its land; its placement along the most-traveled routes for settlers heading west; its deep resonance in the traditions of its Native American inhabitants, especially the tribes of the Iroquois League; and even the recent history of its well-known Taylor wineries. But, unfortunately, Tall seems more interested in making historical allusions and cultural comparisons to societies from all over the globe than in focusing on the specific place and its inhabitants: There are few contemporary character portraits in these pages. When the author discusses modern times, she's usually content with superficial (if well-deserved) criticism of the rootlessness and spiritual poverty of our society. Compellingly written and deeply felt, but overly abstract and offering little real sense of the region or its people today. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Know Where We Stand, Then We Know Where We Are
By Gussie Fink-Nottle
My understanding and practice of landscaping is limited to the home and garden variety. Even at this level of home maintenance my skills and interests are limited. And I should be vacationing at a national park, say, the Grand Canyon or Yosemite, I would be as Moses standing on Pisgah taking in the general effect of the scenery from a distance. It comes as an entirely new revelation then, for one to be connected to or be part of a landscape takes more than Scott's fertilizers for the lawn, bordered fences, or sightseeing the Yosemite Valley.

After accepting a teaching position at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the author and her poet husband make their home in the Finger Lakes Region at upstate New York. There, the author begins her interrogative journey on this vast landscape of terra incognita and eventually finding herself (and does her family) to belong to the land(scape) and not merely as a transient trampling through it with indifference.

The book is repleted with historical anecdotes, myths, and local interests. It's is not a technical tome about geography, history, and anthropology of the Finger Lakes. Rather, this is the author's journal of how she strives to be with the land upon she dwells. As the author discovers, the landscape is the embodied lessons of the past for the present, and instructions for the future. The scenery of a place is only a prop. Without a landscape there can be no scenery. And that what makes this book rare and instructive.

Deborah Hall's work has filled a void in my understanding of our culture. I now think more about the history, the town, and the neigbhorood (including neighbors) where I live. Perhaps too, I will come to know the land where I stand, and not just my own lawn.
