The unsolved murder of movie director William Desmond Taylor has attracted amateur sleuths for years, including director King Vidor, whose findings were revealed in Sidney D. Kirkpatrick's best-selling A Cast of Killers ( LJ 7/86). Strangely enough, Farrar, Straus & Giroux publisher Giroux doesn't mention A Cast of Killers in this book on the case, although he obviously disagrees with its conclusion (that a starlet's mother killed Taylor) and its negative portrait of Taylor. While Giroux fails to provide readers with a solution to the crime, movie buffs will nevertheless appreciate his additional background history on the case and his admirable downplay of the scandals of the silent film era. --Susan Caputo, "Library Journal"

Robert Giroux's "A Deed of Death" carefully lays out who was who involved with William Desmond Taylor and were possible suspects in his murder. The deed happened the evening of February 1, 1922 in the living room of Desmond's Alvarado Court Bungalow, and discovered next morning by his manservant-cook Henry Peavey. At that time Taylor was one of Paramount Pictures' top directors and, according to Giroux, loved movie star Mabel Normand. Besides the murderer, Normand was the last person to see Taylor alive. The detective's timeline proved he was shot shortly after seeing Normand off in her chauffeur-driven car. Also involved was Paramount's ingénue star Mary Miles Minter. She was certain Taylor was in love with her. She was 20 and he was nearing. The newspapers of that era never let the facts interfere with a good story and they twisted the tale every way but loose. However. Giroux's text untangles untruths in giving the backgrounds of all names involved in one way or another with Taylor. In the 1960's movie director King Vidor sat in his car on Alvarado Street watching a deconstruction crew bulldoze those bungalows. That began his investigation into Taylor's murder. He concludes crooked city authorities made sure the murder was unsolved by blackmailing Minter and her mother. Charlotte Shelby. He suggests she killed Taylor. Giroux's book places blame on the drug lords of the 20's because Taylor's work to get Normand clean of drugs, and others who may be hooked. He affected their illegal income while shining a light on the criminals. The author covers a suspect - a hired hit man - seen by a Taylor neighbor and one of the Alvarado Street Car conductors, but ignored by the police. Vidor's notes, discovered after his death and written as a book titled "A Cast of Killers" by Sidney Fitzpatrick, is enlightening and entertaining. Vidor said, "The movie bosses...were anxious to suppress the whole thing. They'd rather sacrifice Taylor than sacrifice the whole industry." Giroux's book gives us deeper more satisfying bios on Taylor, Norman, Peavey and Minter. I recommend reading both. Side note: The Alvarado - Maryland Streets corner where those bungalows sat is now the upper paved parking area for a Big Lots store.

The Media, Drugs, and that Naughty Nightgown

There were many scandals in the 1920s, and one of the foremost is the unsolved murder of William Desmond Taylor. Even to film buffs, Taylor is not the most well known director; his body of work has been shrunk by the ravages of time and nitrate decomposition. However, his name lives on as the victim of a murder shrowded with mystery and lies.
Robert Giroux grew up watching the films of Taylor's era and took an interest in the murder case just in time. He was able to interview various celebrities of the 20s to gather information for this book. Stars like King Vidor and Mary Pickford give their imput through interviews as well as other sources like Mack Sennett, Mary Miles Minter, and Mabel Normand who contribute through their autobiographies and early interviews.
This book is vastly different from A Cast of Killers, a more well-known account of the murder. Giroux's book is well documented and therefore more intellectual. Both books are easy to read, although A Cast of Killers is written in conversations and A Deed of Death is written as a presentation of facts with many quotes throughout. The two books come to different conclusions, so it is interesting to compare them. Both are highly recommended for fans of the 20s and mystery readers.

The most accurate account yet

Although I prefer the excitement and narrative of Sidney D. Kirkpatrick's book "A Cast of Killers," Giroux's account of the William Desmond Taylor murder is most likely the definitive version. Very well researched and methodical in its conclusions, it eliminates much of the sensationalism that has been attached to this case over the years (particurlarly Adela Rogers St. John's fanciful accounts). Although a murderer is never named, the murder itself is "solved." Want to know the ending? Buy the book! Although well written, it does lack some of the zing of Kirkpatrick's story.
