Excellent writing , thoughtful analysis

Have been reading contemporary European History and have found this book to describe in real time the situation of the central european intellectuals towards the end of the cold war. The author is brilliant in his style and the comparison to touquville is not too far fetched. I especially liked the article comparing two movies shoah about the holocaust and heimat about the german experience in WW2, which leads to a discussion of the relationship of memory and the historical discipline.

I read this book in the fall of 1989 and was amazed at Garton-Ash's ability to evoke the political spirit of the time. His prose meanders between the scholarly and the spectacular - no small feat when dealing with Europe on the edge of seismic transformation. If you have an interest in the history and politics of Europe, do not miss this sadly overlooked book...
