Tropical Splendor: An Architectural History of Florida

A readable, informative and effectively illustrated account of the wild, weird and wonderful buildings that have graced and disgraced the state over the years.

You'd never mistake Florida architecture for, say, Iowa architecture. For one thing, Florida actually has a distinctive architecture -- one that encompasses the varied styles (Spanish, Cracker, Art Deco and others) its settlers brought with them. Then there's the matter of the hues the buildings come in -- pink, aqua, white. No doubt about it: Florida's architecture befits a colorful state. And not only befits it, but also records its history.
Florida's distinctive architecture dates back more than 400 years, to the settlement of the peninsula by the Spanish. They brought not only their ambitions for wealth, but also their penchant for buildings with balconies and arches. The English, who in the late 18th century gained Florida territory, made their own modifications, which included adding second stories and replacing thatched roofs (a fire hazard) with safer wooden shakes.
In the next century, the plantation system engendered the Southern planter style. Florida's antebellum mansions varied a bit from that style: For example, doorways were plain, because expert wood carvers were rare.
Meanwhile, Key West also was adding ingredients to the architectural stew. Builders there borrowed from Federal style, Greek Revival and Gothic Revival, and adapted the fancy architecture to the hurricane-prone area. The result was Conch houses.
In the following years, wealthy men such as Henry Flagler and Henry Plant built hotels and mansions that mirrored their opulent lives, while Floridians of modest means built so-called Cracker houses that were sturdy but well- ventilated for hot summers.
The 20th century brought even more variety to Florida architecture. The boom of the 1920s encouraged people to construct their fantasies in such lavish styles as Mediterranean Revival. Even into the Depression, bright and glamorous Art Deco buildings appeared. With the second half of the century has come innovation, such as the witty and sculptural Arquitectonica-designed structures.
In his book, Tropical Splendor: An Architectural History of Florida, Hap Hatton, a native of Bartow, traces the development of Florida and its architecture. Tropical Splendor takes up the many styles that make up the Florida look. Hatton tells how the state's real-estate booms and busts made their mark on the Florida look, and how two very different communities -- Seaside and Walt Disney World -- came about because of intensive urban planning.
